How to Easily Correct Colors and Match Tones in Photoshop

  • In this video we'll be performing color matching and tonal correction using an intuitive technique I created involving solid fill layers and tonal averaging. While this sort of thing can be done using hue/saturation and curves adjustments, this approach is both simple and effective and serves as another tool for your toolkit. This method requires Photoshop CS5 and higher.

    Wow - I just did a wedding, and the groom had just recently finished radiation therapy for skin cancer on a large part of the right side of his face, which made it quite red. Most of the shots were his good side (he was very concious of it) but there is a money shot with the red side that I wanted to fix - this is just what I needed to see! Thanks so much!

    Love this method Michael, thanks for posting. I've never used an action before, but I'll have to try this out. This usually takes me close to 10 minutes of trial and error to correct. I've been getting larger batch jobs and this may just save me some serious time. Thanks!

    This method is exactly what I was looking for! Shooting in a studio, when the subject has make up applied, the neck and chest area is always a problem for me. This method is wonderful! Thank you for sharing!

      I have to agree. While his work and retouching is insane, and I'm sure he understands what that action does and why, I don't know what it does and it bothers me. I wouldn't use that action because it's such a cheap way of getting the result without having any idea what it's doing. I wish he did explain that.

    • @Andrew-tl9gk
      @Andrew-tl9gk 5 років тому +5

      Totally agree with both of you! I want to know exactly what this action does and why, what is the math behind, etc etc...

    • @kality656
      @kality656 4 роки тому +5

      That's right but who's gonna buy his course if he explains everything he knows for free? You could easily download the action, see exactly what it does and recreate it yourself if you wish. He basically takes a sample of two colors, creates solid fill layers out of each one, merges them, creates a new channel, inverts it and changes the blending mode of the merged layer to color dodge. Creates two curves adjustment layers after, pulls the highlight of one up and the shadows of the other one down and sets them to luminosity blending mode and 0 opacity then groups everything together creates a mask and inverts it. You are then ready to apply the color and tonal corrections.

    Action didn't work. I followed exactly what was done in video and the color layer that the action produces was some weird green, even though the 2 colors I chose with the eyedropper were skin tones. I decided to just try changing the color of that layer by filling it in with a skin tone and that produced a weird result that didn't work, either. Thanks for trying, works nicely for you but didn't work at all. (I have PS CC).

    Here is a technical question no one seems to have answer for! including Adobe support! I am unable to use 16 bit files when do FS in PS 2015 cc, and support decided maybe changing the blending mode to linear burn would work, it appeared it might, but it does not, Support maintains 16 bit does not work in CC 2015, I say most of the tutorials out there are using 16 bit files and should be using CC 2015. I am putting this question out there for some sort of answer so I could start editing 16 bit files in CC 2015

    I'd really like to know the algorithm behind what is going on. It's clearly not just copying colors. Does it like go twice as far in terms of color and then what you unmask is essentially the average of the two?

    WOW! I know you're brilliant, but I found this process really, really difficult (particularly at the end). So confused......

    What if I wanted to match skin to be darker? Eg. one side of the face is brighter than the other, and I want to match it with the darker side. I tried doing the same thing in the tutorial but it only brightens the skin. When I tried switching the colors so darker color was first, but nothing changed when I painted over the mask.
