    I gotta give this channel props for teaching me the right way to do the neckline. I think Eric did a video on it last year. But to me the main reason to trim it the way Jeff shows is this: if you are aiming for any length longer than 1/2inch, you need the hair under your jaw and behind your chin to help your beard look full. If you trim the neckline too high your beard will start to look thin and wispy because there isn't hair behind it to fill it up. Great video and well demonstrated. Cheers!

      ColoradoCamper Great point! I have trouble growing my beard under my chin and on my neck. I don't shave it to the chin line, ala George Lucus style but I do shave it about an inch lower. I'd like to go down to my Adams Apple but it just doesn't grow that great under my chin. Any suggestion? Good Products? Thanks!

    Hey guys - thanks for the great video. However, I noticed that a number of us still seem to be struggling with the method of gauging the side of the neck cut. Jeff takes a finger from his jawline, goes parallel down, and then angles it. Then it shows him trimming above the line he just identified - can we get a little more clarification on this?

    So glad you brought up regarding the neckline that is way to high up to the jawline that makes the face looks smaller. That really bugs me so much by looking at it. You know that some guys like them thinks that area above the Adam's apple is part of the neck but really it's from there and below is your neck and above is a part of your head.

    This channel is awesome, I have not had someone "teach" me how to grow out my facial hair so I had no idea this was the proper way. I myself had been growing it out the way that is not very suggested in the video and am going to trip everything up and grow it out so it looks much cleaner.
    Thanks!

      He is saying to find your jaw line, and kick that back a little bit and that is the mark below your ear and then draw a straight line from there to the spot one finger above your adam's apple. He also specifies NOT TO draw a straight line to your jaw line because then it looks weird (reiterating to make sure to kick it back inferiorly and laterally).
      In other words:
      Spot 1: one finger above your adam's apple as shown in the video
      Spot 2: draw a line down from your ear and another line at a 45 degree angle downwards and laterally from your jaw, and where these 2 lines meet is your second spot.
      -Shave with your razor and connect these 2 spots. I used a pen to mark these 2 spots to make sure that I don't fuck it up because I'm an idiot :D

    Just started growing a beard after a few year of trying... time to get serious. Got about 3 months growth n went to a gents barber I had recommended.... what a mistake. Had to sort it (damage limitation) at home afterwards and as per usual it got higher n higher towards jawline... managed to get it sorted just below. Thought I was gonna end up completely shaving it off n starting from square one again... very upset. Not what I wanted as trying to get the Greg Berzinski style of square beard.... semi happy now so time to continue growing out the lost bits n get it blending in ASAP 👍

Sssoooo many times I've encountered dudes with great beard coverage potential, except they trim their beards at the jaw line, and the beards appear incomplete (like shaving one side of the head), though they think they look super, they would look fantastic IF they would push their beard growing into the ZONE, by extending it to a proper neck line! Come on guys, you're so close to a slam dunk! Rock that beard, and own it baybeez!

    Just watching this video for the first time. Thank you for putting these videos out as I embark on a journey to grow my beard out. I am guilty of shaving at the jawline starting just below the ear and about three fingers up from the Adam's apple. The question I have is, should I trim my current beard back down to a stubble or the proverbial 5 o'clock shadow or should I just start letting my neck hair grow and when it catches up, shape it up? I know either way I'm going to have to go through an awkward phase.

    Everything you said is true. I have been messing with my beard for years. on the jaw line did looks weird once it grows. When its only a bit of stubble it's ok. By the way I never looked as bad as any of those examples. The two beard thing also true so I end up trimming it all the same length which is kinda irratating because it's like I'm starting over. Right above the Adams apple is good. lately I've been doing something in between the jawline and Adams apple. Not too low, not too high and it looks fine I think.

Unfortunately, I have shaved just below my jawline, up a bit higher than where you mentioned to shave it. Agreed. My brother is in really good shape, but I think there's this weird stereotype on the Internet, about neck-beards, even when people don't actually have quote only "neck-beards". He shaves a bit under the neck, so that you can see his beard kind of hang like a goatee, and I'm just thinking that he's not growing his beard to its fullest potential.

  • @pajtim9079

    I struggle with my stache in general. It is not as dense as it should be. It gets like long strands of hair which keep dangling lose because they're soft. Anyway, my question is, is it better to shave the neckline with a classic blade or a machine? Which is safer?

    • @Beardbrand
      @Beardbrand  8 років тому +2

      +Pajtim Hasani You can do either. Personally I prefer using the beard trimmer, like Jeff does in this video, for the neck/Adam's apple area. Then I use a razor to clean up the strays around that area and just keep it looking well-groomed.

  • @thecowboy9698

    Can I ask you, does a beard absolutely have to have a neckline in order to look good?
    I am regrowing my beard from a goatee, and so far I'm almost at 2 weeks. In times past I have always given it a neckline.
    This time I am just letting it grow without a neckline, just because it's easier. I do make a slight cheek line so as give it a little definition, but the neck I'm just leaving natural.
    My only concern is, that due to being a young guy, in my mid-twenties, I'm afraid I'll look like a slob, that I'll look unkempt, and therefore unattractive.
    So that's why I ask, does a beard absolutely have to have a neckline in order to look good? Or can you make it look good without giving it a neckline, and if so, how can that be done?
    Sorry if this is a stupid question, but not giving my beard a neckline is new territory for me.

I have a question does just for men can demage your beard I'm only 18 and have a full beard I only like to use just for men to make it look fuller is it bad for your beard ? and stops it from growing it ?

    • @Beardbrand
      @Beardbrand  7 років тому +1

      It's not necessarily bad for your beard, but it's definitely not necessary for you at 18. Your beard is still young, and if it's already filling in and getting dense, it will only continue to mature as you reach your 20's. Dying your beard a lot can lead to dry, brittle hair, and at your age you really don't need to be concerned with breaking out beard dye. If you can go without it, skip it and let your beard breathe and develop naturally for a few more years!

    @Beardbrand, have been growing beard out for 2 months and 10 days...I need to go to a barber and shape it up, no length taken off, just need shaping up. Currently, I've been following your tips and have NOT shaved too high up on the neckline or too FAR DOWN on the cheeks...any tips on what I should tell the barber to do with my beard? Last time I went there, it was a nightmare and they messed the whole thing up and had to shave it all off. I think it was because I didn't really know what to ask for so any advise would be greatly appreciated? Thanks & beard on!

    Awesome video! Would love one of these for the cheek line!
    Got a question though. I have a bald spot in the middle where the soft bottom part under my mouth meets my neck above my Adam's apple. I have some decent thickness around it, but the bald spot still shines from every angle.
    I'm around 1 month in, and I'm looking for 2 months or so of length. Any tips on neck trimming to make the bald spot less obvious?
    Thanks in advance, love the videos. Wonderful resource for a younger, growing beardsman.

      +Josiah Robinson hard to imagine, however just wait till about two months when the hairs start to lay down instead of stick out and you'll see they start covering patches or thiner areas as a measure for how it may grow into.

    If I've gone a little high on my neck line but the rest is longer and I want to grow out the neck line would it be better to trim back the rest while the neck part grow in more?

    hi, what should I do about having a "curly" beard? I'll let it grow for a month then end up drimming it because it just looks unkept. Should I continue growing it and brush it down?

    Hey again Jeff, getting concerned about how to trim. Will end up with a billy goat beard and thick side cheeks like Bluto. I don't know if I use an electric trimmer do I aim to 'thin out' the beard or just make all of them shorter?
    I can't believe I've got this attached to my first beard. Started growing a few days into November and it's getting pretty well full on now. Always had thick strong stubble. i'm not 45+. Any tips appreciated. If I had the money I'd fly you over, your beard suits you well you have a very good eye
    Thanks Jeff

    To answer the question on why people trim their neck line too high, along the jawline, is to create the illusion of actually having a jawline. I did this for years. My main reason for a beard originally was to hide my double chin. I then cut along the jawline to make it appear that i had one. I realized my mistake when i saw another portly fellow doing the same thing and realized it looked ridiculous, like a chin strap.

    Went to get a haircut today and told the barber to just trim my cheek and neckline, not mess with my heard at all. Well, he went too far up my neck line and I'm pissed. Thoughts? It's about 1/2 inch higher than I want above my adams apple. Should I grow that part out awkward for a while?

    • @CaliCool91
      @CaliCool91 8 років тому +1

      +PlantbasedAthlete Yes, my barber made the same mistake about a year ago and I was in the exact same position. Grow it out awkward until you can trim the rest of your beard down even and it all falls back in line together. It's really only that bad for about a week.

      +CaliCool91 Moral of the story... Get a decent trimmer and do it yourself. You don't need to waste money on no barber who may fuck it up,

    warning shaving without a guard on clippers will damage your beard permenantly this is the reason men’s necklines look less dense than the rest of the beard . Look at the back of your head after not getting a haircut for a couple weeks you notice that some hair where the barber touched it up when they took the guard off the clippers is less dense . If you grow a longer beard it will be smaller and less dense- do not make this mistake!

  • @SlavicPrideOfficial

    I think it depends on the person. I have a reasonable strong jawline, and I just go straight down along the sideburns, and then put the jawline 1 cm below my actual jaw (with a slight tilt).
    You get a sorta ''L'' shape that way, and it works for those that have strong jawlines.

  • @geot4647
    @geot4647 7 років тому

    Unless a guy has a flat-enough underside to their jaw, cutting a beard line lower on the neck can make it look too much like a neck beard with v-shape, unless they grow it bushy enough to fill that whole underside area, which many don't want to do.

    Jeff-So apparently I've been trimming my beard along the jaw line all wrong! After watching your great vid I'm not sure how to fix my beard so it is correctly with my neckline. I have a 2 month beard growth. Do I just grow out my neck line till its ready to shape correctly or do I need to trim my entire beard to the length with my new neck line? Thanks man! Loved the vid! I can see now after watching the vid how going along the jaw line just looks like a glorified chinstrap and I can't stand it now. I want a nice full bearded look. Thanks.

      +Lance Test Hey Lance, I'm sure Jeff will jump in here but I figured I'd give you some tips too. You can trim your neckline now if you want - you may want to just use clippers to follow Jeff's instructions in this video and keep everything below the Adam's apple trimmed while the rest grows and fills in. It'll take a little bit of time, but hey, patience is a virtue, right? Beard on!

    One big thing that you missed is that the jawline is not the boundary between the neck and the head, so when a beard is edged there it just looks bad. The neckline must be located at the boundary between the neck and the head and every guy will have a division there. If the beard is edged before that boundary it looks weird. Why it is so popular to edge the neck at the jaw is a mystery to me since it looks terrible.
