    I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

      you can strop on a lot of different things. leather from a belt, leather with polishing comound on it, news paper card board. As for stones 400, 1000, 6000 will work for most people. For a low grit I would suggest going with a diamond stone as it wont wear and doubles as a flattening stone for the other ones when they get worn.
      If your sharpening a really hard steel avoid the super cheap waterstones and arkansas stones as they might not be able to abrade the steel.
      The ceramics made by spyderco are great to because they are relatively in expensive compared to higher end waterstones and last forever.

    • @TheMustafar3
      @TheMustafar3 7 років тому

      wont get any benefits above 3000 and even then you might see no improvement. keep in mind that those steels don't keep angles below 25° and the material structure is rougher so you wont get that last bit of sharpness you might get from a steel like 1.2008

      One more suggestion is to include (if you get time) a budget item. I've noticed a lot of these items are $100-200 USD + which is pretty expensive for beginners. We can maybe upgrade to those after we get some crappy versions of items and then learn. I'm new to Bushcraft and want to learn and start practicing with what I can afford.

    • @DutchBushcraftKnives

      I can suggest the DC4 stone. The cheap sharpening stones are just not for these outdoor knives. You could sharpen something like 12c27 on king stones or the cheap double sided stones but anything that has a better wear resistance will be hard. In the end you'll throw the cheap stones away. the DC-4 however will be able to get all your knives razor sharp for $20-$25,-

    I got a smiths sharpening stone from my local store not so long ago, and just today I figured out that I could use it to sharpen my knives to the point where they can cut through spacetime. It’s a fine stone, it’s yellow in color and it has a little case on it. It works awesome in the field paired with my leather belt, I can strop without compound and make an even sharper knife. I got my mora back to factory sharpness with it (the chips in the blade just give it the character that makes it mine). But yeah, check it out. You’ll get good sharpness off of it. Now I just have to find a way to sharpen my axe.

    First time to comment on a video. I think the “air humping” at the LONG TIME it may take to sharpen a knife, yes a diamond stone can help cut the time (if it is coarse Eniough!) but your mileage may vary.

    • @DutchBushcraftKnives
      @DutchBushcraftKnives  5 років тому +1

      at the first stone you sharpen for both a uniform scratch pattern and also watch the edge every several minutes too see if all reflections (dull spots) have gone. waiting for feeling a burr is a good method but if you raise the angle of the knife too high you can also get a burr without actually ending up with a sharp knife

  • @joshnc2076
    @joshnc2076 8 років тому

    Excellent video! For convex edge, the movement is quite straightforward, a rocking back and forth motion with increased angle when doing the belly / tip. How much height do you raise the spine from the stone?
    Fallkniven suggests the height of the blade thickness. So for a A1, would you raise the spine up to 6mm from the stone? more? less?
    cheers!

    • @DutchBushcraftKnives
      @DutchBushcraftKnives  8 років тому

      +josh nc it actually depends on the type of steel the knife is made out of. I will raise the spine higher if it's a weaker steel to higher the edge angle and increase the edge retention. With a scandi-vex you can often. Use the angle of the factory bevel but without the secondary bevel

    So, as a tip I've found seems to be effective from sharpening my own knives: after stropping a knife I'll lightly drag the edge through a soft piece of wood, like the strop handle, to remove the rest of the bur that may be left and its always seemed to make the edges sharper than when I don't
