    I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

    I totally agree... the convexed scandi is my absolute favorite. Keeps the edge strong, and yet allows great feathering and slicing capabilities. I have an old kephart style knife that was made originally with a scandivex edge. It is absolutely my favorite belt knife! Thanks dutch dudes... still lovin' the channel!

    great instructional video. Though I always sharpen my knives using an ambidextrous technique - meaning I just use same position and switch hands for each side (rather than moving knife forwards and, then, keeping same hand position, turning knife over, then moving it backwards). Just seems logical to me!

    When working on the straight portion of the blade, how do you keep it straight and even? Sometimes when using the push-pull method or trying to convex them edge I feel like I’m removing a lot of steel very quickly. If I lay the edge of the knife on a flat surface I can see areas where light is coming through.
    I used to have issues with changing the belly line but saw how virtuovoice fixed that issue and have followed his advice.
    I find that doing the cutting strokes for a secondary v-edge is the easiest way to make sure I’m not altering the blade too much. I do prefer the results of the convex edge and have no issue getting my knives insanely sharp. I just don’t want to remove excessive amounts of steel or change the shape of the blade by mistake.

    There is 2 ways to sharpen a convex grind, thinning it, or thickening it.
    Most people raise the angle and loosen their wrist, making the angle thicker, convex, and more durable. You can also lower the angle, leaving the apex edge angle alone and making it just as durable and making it cut a lot better.

    • @nils-ph3zs
      @nils-ph3zs 4 роки тому

      ...and a scandivex is actually just a thin convex
      a interesting fact is, that convex is always thinner (weaker) and sharper than any other grind with the same apex angle

  • @tjwright
    @tjwright 5 років тому

    I truly believe that water stone sharpening is probably the best if you're good at it... but I suck so badly that I gave up the stones when I acquired a 1x30 belt grinder and started making knives. Now I just use my belt grinder and step grits to 2500 then power strop with a leather belt. I get them pretty sharp. Admittedly never as sharp as what I've seen in these videos (easily gliding and shaving huge swaths of hair at once).

    Agreed guys, a well sharpened SCANDIVEX hardly ever needs to be sharpened and only stropped after a good use. The only time I want a true scandi is when whittling and detailed carving usually with a small neck knife. I think the best knife for carving is the Mora Eldris and if you give that knife a scandivex and new wood handle its wicked good for skinning small animals.
