The only problem with not disclosing gender exists in languages that use gendered nouns and have usage of "they" as plural only (like many Slavic languages).
Oh well, I just entered Vtubers' world recently and discovered Ryushen. My first impression was that they've got a really nice voice, I love it and instinctively I was wondering if it was a boy or a girl. Not like I would care either way but tbh I'm pretty curious. So yeah I get it that most of the people down there in the comments find that annoying, but I still want to know their gender just by curiosity and wouldn't unfollow Ryushen because of something so trivial.

saw some of the comments here so i'll try to explain. for those of you who don't know, the word for gender '性別'/'seibetsu' is used interchangeably in definition with 'sex', ie what genitals they have, as are the words for male and female. so obviously what ryushen might have been trying to get across is harder to understand. ((i've seen this issue with the manga/anime community, especially with amab characters that are pretty much confirmed to be trans, whether it be nb (astolfo, okino if anybody knowds them) or trans girls. people usually treat them as crossdressers, because that's often what the other characters refer to them as - reflecting how japanese society views them. there is a _definite_ language disconnect here.)) i'm not saying ryushen is non-binary necessarily. i'm saying that when they said "of course i'm either a man or a woman" it was likely referring to the japanese idea of what makes you a man or a woman - your genitals. but we don't know if they are nb or not, and, frankly, the fact people are so opposed to the idea strikes me as pretty weird.
Thank you for explaining about '性別/seibetsu'. You are right, we Japanese use the word '性別/seibetsu' for both 'sex' and 'gender identity' (and maybe 'expression' as well). When distinguishing them, we say 'sex' is '身体的性/shintaitekisei' or 'からだの性/karada no sei' and 'gender identity' is '性自認/seijinin' or 'こころの性/kokoro no sei'. Also, the word 'ノンバイナリー/non-binary' is not often used in Japan, and the word 'Xジェンダー/X-gender' is more widely used. However while I was translating this video, I read various explanations of 'non-binary' in English, but I felt it was a little different from 'Xジェンダー/X-gender,' which is used synonymously in Japan. And I think it's very interesting that the "Is Ryushen non-binary or not?" debate is happening here, but not in the Japanese subtitled video.
@@yamatanomomochi thank you for the response. yes, from what i understand, x-gender and non-binary are both umbrella terms with slightly different definitions, but overrall they represent the same thing. it is interesting that the debate is only happening here. i do think the fact ryushen leaves their gender unknown attracted a number of non-binary fans, and that's one reason. also, i think in english people find it difficult when they don't know someone's gender because of third person pronouns, so there's more of a focus on it.
@@slifer875 so did i, but i realise now that the implication was that astolfo is trans, whether it's intentional or not. i wanna start by saying i do understand where the confusion comes from. i do think fandoms tend to infer a character's gender based on how others refer to them (in this example, characters saying astolfo is male, because astolfo is male biologically) and take it as the absolute truth. they also think boku = automatically male, when it's more accurate to say _masculine_ - boku and ore are masculine, watashi and jibun are neutral and atashi is feminine. but what helps the least is the fact that the word crossdressing is used for anyone born male who wears "girls" clothes, and ultimately has no correlation to the characters identified gender. but anyway, what we _do_ know is that one: astolfo is amab, and two: astolfo doesn't like to be referred to as a man, and expresses pretty clear adamance towards that. honestly, that pretty clearly reads as: astolfo doesn't perceive themself as a man. if it was the other way around (astolfo being uncomfortable referred to being called a girl) there wouldn't be any argument. so, maybe they're not a trans girl, maybe they're just unhappy with being labelled or unsure. either way, the people who are saying that astolfo is canonically a guy are incorrect. regardless, a character's gender shouldn't matter so much as people act like it does. it's fine to not know whether a character is a guy, girl, or whatever. it doesn't change their character.
