  • The Switch Axe is the last weapon I haven't tried in Monster Hunter World Iceborne. So I tried it to see what the hype was all about.

welcome to the swaxe team! theirs a few pointers
      1. in most game but sunbreak, all phials pale in comparison to the power phial
      2. there is another finisher than the ground slam and said finisher's 2md swing is used as the wakeup hit, i think you hit the right trigger for it? it's been years since i picked up swaxe in world. (you could also zero sum, you' have to recharge some sword meter though)
      3. evade extender lv2 will be your friend, the evade game with this weapon is punishing
      4. it is very easy to get greedy with your zero-sum discharges, it happens to the best of us.
      5. ax mode is for fishing for flinches and breaking parts, sword mode is where all the damage is at
      6. temporal, rocksteady, and health regen augments is one hell of a power trip, especially if you slotted in power prolonger and maybe focus.
      7. be mindful while in ax mode around others. like the long sword it's a tripping machine.
and yes, rise and sunbreak brought many quality-of-life changes to the swax, along with it's personal skill rapid morph.

Wooo, I love the swaxe! So excited to see what they do with it in Wilds, want to parry monsters by morphing into axe mode.

This has been the weapon I've been running through World with. I'll eventually use another weapon, but I wanna slay every monster with it. I recommend looking up tip videos for World's switch axe, since those have been really helpful for helping me figure out things I can do mid combo.
Here's a tip I can give. The axe mode is great for breaking monster parts and staggering them. When you use your wild swing and finish with Y, that buff you get makes it much easier to stagger and break parts.
Also you can clutch claw onto monsters and use your zero sum discharge when amped, by pressing Y + B. When doing the ZSD, you can pull back on the left stick and it's explode earlier with a little bit of a weaker explosion. This is very helpful, because it won't lock you in an animation that morphs your sword back to axe mode.
When your sword is amped, try using the combo Y Y Y B, then repeat when you feel comfortable enough with the weapon. It's one of your best dps moves when using the sword.

I think one of the biggest reasons you probably felt like you weren't playing Swaxe "right" here is because of the morph. You said you played Swaxe in Sunbreak, and in Sunbreak you can morph after a hop, a roll or an attack. In Iceborne you can't morph after a hop or else you'll do the much slower morph like you did a lot of the time. So I think because of that playing Swaxe here may have felt less fluid or slower because morphing is more intuitive (imo) in Sunbreak.
My advice would be to get more familiar with your combos because once you do, you get a better feel of when to be in sword mode vs axe mode. Sword mode is obviously where most of your damage is but because of the lack of mobility you don't want to spend most of your time in that mode. Keep your amped state up and you phial filled up by switching between modes during your attacks and when you have a good opening beat up on the monsters in sword mode.

You can switch between modes after just about every attack. Your main goal is to build up sword gauge(the glow going around the weapon icon) and spam zero sum as long as the meter is past that little line going through it. If you have a full sword gauge and whiff zero sum then press left trigger to clutch and do it manually

Weave switching back to axe when doing a combo in sword mode, this will keep the sword charged. Axe is more agile and uses more directional attacks, while sword is mainly stationary but has phial dmg when hitting consistently 👌💸
Also Y, Y, Y, B (Xbox) is infinite combo in sword

Don’t be afraid to sheath your weapon as you can un-sheath into both forms from it

Hey, Kat the SWAX main of TheHungryGamers here. Not too shabby, Uno! You've figured out and used pretty much all the SWAX things in one hunt lol! imo SWAX isn't very complicated, but like with any other weap, it takes time and practice (like HH has different directional moves that I can never remember wth man! =_=) And yes World SWAX feels a bit diff than Sunbreak SWAX.
But the REAL question is...will you use it again???

I also just had the thoughts of trying out Swax recently, my hunts looked like this as well, but in the end, the weapon is a lot of fun and can be very clutch at times enough for me to use it more if I feel brave enough one day. lol

iirc in Rise you don't even need to do any attack or movement option to switch between forms, just holding forward and pressing the morph button will make you do a morph attack.
If you hold backwards and do a heavy attack in axe mode, you will do a vertical backwards slash moving you backwards. In sword mode if you hold backwards and press the morph button you will also do the same vertical backwards move and it will switch you back to axe mode.
If the monster gets distance on you, it is completely fine to sheath your weapon if you're in sword mode instead of slowing walking or slowly rolling to the monster.
During Wild Swing if you press the morph button, you will do a somewhat long and dedicated super axe swing. This move deals tons of damage and will switch you into sword mode, this is super useful on downed monsters or if you don't have Zero Sum Discharge ready to go.
During Discharge meaning not latched on to the monster, In world you can press the clutch claw button to latch onto the monster after amping the sword up or if you whiffed the latch on attempt.
14:40 assuming you're trying to do zero sum discharge while latched on, it is only possible if your sword is fully amped just like when you're normally going for ZSD. A funny quirk of this move though is even if you don't have enough bar to go into sword without reloading, it will still let you shoot off ZSD.
1:46 doing this move amplifies part breaking on every axe move making it easier to stagger monsters, while in Rise this helps the sword mode amp up faster.
Outside of these, everything else is mostly knowing when to switch between the more mobile axe form and high dps sword mode, and just knowing basic bread and butter combos.

A great way to close gaps in sword mode is by rolling into morph attack. It covers a lot of ground. If you're in range at that point, you can immediately switch back to sword
