@@joshsmith2629 i remember when i discovered this channel 2-3 years ago. I couldn't make sense of of what was being said in some talks although i was familiar with other dhamma teachings. And still it is not easy for me to comprehend what is being said occasionally although it seems to have become clearer over the years. Yet some teachings, like the majority of ven. Nanavira's writings seem to be impossible for me to grasp at a consistent pace. It's not only that i haven't incorporated it in my everyday life, but i haven't even intellectually understood it. And there's a long way from intellectually understanding something like impermanence, the cause of suffering or hollowness of self and then forgetting about it soon after, as opposed to being able to maintain the remembrance of it in every single moment of your life.

By going through this video over and over I get more and more benefit from it. The the way Bhante taught in this video was so deep and concise. Which doesnt mean that the other times were not brilliant aswell but this was extraordinary going into deep subtle things that usually is hard to summarize in one video. Absolutely amazing! Thank you so much Dear Bhante!

Wow what a talk! By far the best dhamma talk I have ever heard. It feels like it was made and tailored just for me, like exactly what I needed to hear at this exact moment, just unbelievable! Like I finally understand and actually see what this practice is all about, I mean, it was here that whole time, but I didn't see it, wow! Thank you Bhante for all your amazing effort and teaching. This one really hit home for me. Thank you

  • @zorananda

It all falls into place. The inability to lean towards pleasant feelings and to lean away from unpleasant feelings, THAT inability is your Sammadhi.
As Ajahn says, the Arahant does not choose to remain unmoved by pleasant or unpleasant feelings. He does not try to stay unmoved. He simply stays untouched because he is unable to pick up the burning coal. He does not grasp at arisen feelings because he has understood that it was his grasping that was causing the problems in the first place. So his non-grasping is not something he chooses to do but it is the result of his gradual training and the subsequent understanding.
The same holds for Sammadhi. It can not be done actively but comes as a consequence of gradual training and understanding.
Just one thing i would like to clarify further.
If i understood correctly, Ajahn says that the sign of the mind, or citta nimmita as refered in the Suttas, is the mind recognized as a separate entity that is leaning towards pleasures and leaning away from displeasure.
Does that mean that for a Arahant there is no more signs of the mind,or citta Nimmitas ,since his mind does not grasp at feelings anymore ...?
If that is so, is there any reference in the Suttas about that ?

Some suttas that help elucidate arahantship:
DN 29, 9 things an arahant cannot do:
And any monk who is an Arahant, whose corruptions are destroyed...is incapable of doing nine things: (1) He is incapable of deliberately taking the life of a living being; (2) he is incapable of taking what is not given so as to constitute theft; (3) he is incapable of sexual intercourse; (4) he is incapable of telling a deliberate lie; (5) he is incapable of storing up goods for sensual indulgence as he did formerly in the household life; (6) he is incapable of acting wrongly through attachment; (7) he is incapable of acting wrongly through hatred; (8) he is incapable of acting wrongly through folly; (9) he is incapable of acting wrongly through fear. These are the nine things which an Arahant, whose corruptions are destroyed, cannot do...
MN 12, Buddha's mind does not decay with age (unsure if this applies to arahants as well, it probably does):
Sariputta, there are certain recluses and brahmins whose doctrine and view is this..."When this good man is old, aged, burdened with years, advanced in life, and come to the last stage, being eighty, ninety, or a hundred years old, then the lucidity of his wisdom is lost." But it should not be regarded so. I am now old...my years have turned eighty. [insert extensive similie here], Sariputta, even if you have to carry me about on a bed, still there will be no change in the lucidity of the Tathagata's wisdom.
SM 25.5, an arahant speaks plainly, in common parlance:
[Deva] If a bhikkhu is an arahant, consummate, with taints destroyed, one who bears his final body, would he still say, 'I speak'? And would he say, 'They speak to me'?
[Buddha] If a bhikkhu is an arahant...he might still say, 'I speak', and he might say, 'They speak to me.' Skilful, knowing the world's parlance, He uses such terms as mere expressions.
[Deva] When a bhikkhu is an arahant... is it because he has come upon conceit that he would say, 'I speak,' that he would say, 'They speak to me'?
[Buddha] No knots exist for one with conceit abandoned; for him all knots of conceit are consumed. Though the wise one has transcended the conceived, he still might say, 'I speak', he might say too, 'They speak to me.' Skilful, knowing the world's parlance, He uses such terms as mere expressions.

Just by holding the 5 precepts one will soon see what Bhante means by the mind getting stronger and ceasing to bite itself as it did before. Actually I have decided to keep the 5 precepts my entire life because of the benefit of a stronger and peaceful mind. I always knew how to restrain the body and speech but mind was more complicated but through trial and error I learned it. I wonder like when there is a bad thought am I practicing restraint of the mind in accordance with the gradual training if I am pressing against the mind and the pressure with huge faith, manly vigour and confidence and stop thinking until one got rid of the thought and it ceases? Is this the "how and what to do" or how to restrain the mind according to the gradual training or should it be done differently if yes could you Bhante please give your advice on how and what to do to restrain the mind ? Or maybe this what I am doing is the correct way atleast I have had amazing results from it.
    Thank you very much !

you don't have to make the pressuring thoughts go away, you only don't need to give in to them (bhante speaks of right enduance). By not acting out of them, they will go away. It is like someone ringing on your door that doesn't speak your language. You can't tell them to go away (because they will misunderstand you and come again). Instead, by never answering the door, they will at some point not even try to ring the bell (i.e. bother you with a pressuring thought).

@@FindingThePath99 Thank you for your answer. But as far as I know enduring and restraining the thoughts are actually 2 different things and considering that I dont have the right view and only someone that has he right view can do right endurance I want to focus on what I can do which is restraining the thought instead and that is why I wanted to know whether denying the bad thought the way I described by arming oneself wtih huge faith and manly vigour and press against the mind and pressure and stop thinking until one got rid of the thought is what is meant by restraining the thought according to the gradual training?

    Dear Bhante,
Thanks alot for another wonderful talk.
    I need a little clarification.
For a person who is at initial level, if he is able to see his mind and can see it going in certain direction like it is filled with Ill will or lust then would it be ok to remind oneself with some word like it is a bait or any other word which can help him recollect or remind of bigger perspective like this is an arisen phenomenon and I don't have to directly deal with it or other example will be like it is not good for me and will lead to suffering.
    Would really appreciate your advice.
    With Gratitude...

    • @ThaniyoThero

When you recognize a defilement, there's no need to constantly remind yourself of it. This repetition may stem from nervousness about acting out of it. Instead of dwelling on the label, strive to comprehend its nature and significance in your life, before it arises.
Safety from defilements arises when you abandon them, choosing not to engage with them any longer because you know the danger in them.
Labeling them as such may offer initial relief, but it won't be long before you act upon them once more.
The main point is to not act out of them. That is the right endurance.

Bhante says seeing the mind as an entity is an indicator of sotapanna. I had an experience a few years ago where the divide was clearly seen between mind, mind objects, and contact; that the thoughts could not be "me" if they were "being listened to", or another way to say is the "one who knows" was firmly established and it has been that way since, the mind cannot be possessed in the way it once was because taking these things up just leads to proliferation of more non-self and then the mind doesn't have to grasp at them any more.
Would you say this is the same thing?

    • @cliffmilbrun2803
      @cliffmilbrun2803 9 місяців тому

Personality is a phenomenon real as such. When you crave for something gratuitously through your senses you identify with it as this will be mine or it is for me, for this person because its personal and it's a doing. person-ality your thoughts real. Are you saying there are no thoughts because there not perceived through your senses? I just explained identity and personality. Restrain your self from acting out of gratuitous sense desire sleep sexual urges(the gradual training) and you will feel the pull against your will. Thats seeing it as phenomenon. No say in how it manifest or arises but fully responsible for it. If we had say in it ultimately then we would just decide to be arahants.

    • @TheApatheticGuy
      @TheApatheticGuy 9 місяців тому

@cliffmilbrun2803 A personality cannot be a sotapanna, or any other label is what I'm saying. It is as such, indeed. You're clearly not understanding what I'm asking, and the question was meant for the Venerables regardless. Thank you for your input.

At minute 14: "it has to do with you... The mind is the reason..."
He is implying that you = mind.... Or that the "mind " business is "your" business. If you are not the mind, its behaviour has nothing to do with you.
No relation with a pseudo "you".
That way of speaking can be misleading for new practitioners . . . Then fortunately he specifies that there is a gap between you and the mind.
    Anyway , good content 👍
