‘Health is wealth’, and the best way to keep good health is to go for proper food, do exercise, and keep away from diseases. The Indian ascetics go a step further and say that Manas and Prana are also to be properly kept for good health. Lot of research was done on the subject and authentic texts were written. According to Astanga yoga of Patanjali, Pranayama is the fourth step in the eight limbed yoga. The three former steps are external yoga namely, Yama, Niyama and Asana and four later steps are internal yoga namely, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. Pranayama serve as a bridge between the external and internal exercises.
Pranayama is primarily a breath control exercise. But we have to keep in mind that Prana is not breath alone and pranayama goes beyond breath control.
