3:28 you just painted over rust ?
No that was in the paint....not under it. The metallics on these old paints rusted. and under it was completely no rust. I chose to leave it on there since it was protecting the metal underneath and encapsulate it with epoxy primer. white was epoxy primer and rust encapsulate. Will never rust under there again.

Very very nice! I had a 55 oval with semaphores i bought in the late 80’s. I dreamed of doing that level of restoration, but didnt have the resources. I sold it for 500.00. I hope somebody else restored it. Great video, thanks for posting!

Almost done with my '64. My latest parts order, I asked them to throw in a bottle of hair tonic. The vinyl headliner install is making our hair fall out! Haha. Came out perfect though. Cbeers.

this title scared me. I really dig the channel and I hope you don't quit doing the shows. I know people can be pretty crappy. Hope you don't get discouraged. filler dust is the worst, you gotta do it sometimes and it causes a nuclear freaking dust cloud in the whole work area

DIY at home all the flaws are fixed after the spray work. Your right. even custom painters get flaws. only guy who nails it about every time is a production spot work painter. They are the best.

Love that color. Looks great. I wish we would have tackled painting Abbey ourselves. I think it would have come out better than the cheapo place but we were under the gun to get her back on the road. Problem with a daily. Long term plan is to do a full body off at some point. For now we live through you an others on UA-cam :).

Never thought of using transfer tape for masking off. I used it when I did vinyl lettering on vehicles.
yea i learned this several years ago now we use it for flames and everything. Old school flames we did with tape. Like 5 or 6 rolls Now transfer tape and an exact-o knife.

My Beetle still has the factory paint in the wheel wells, and yes it has the factory-original paint runs! Standard stuff on a 50s-60s car.

With that paint booth, if there is rain, the rain will leak through the roof. Which is obviously very bad when you’re trying to paint a car. Just good to know to not paint when it’s going to be raining or storming anytime soon. FYI

I think it's like you said ------ Most of us will try to do as much of the work ourselves ------ It's --- OUR car --- with a great amount of satisfaction in that we did it ---- it may not be perfect ----- Your paint job looks pretty good ----- A run or sag here or there is expected ---- How many cars do we paint in a year ----- yeah --- there you go -------- Have you ever tried a woman's nylon to dab the run or sag --- then as you did --- the second coat will flow out that spot ------ Curious ---- did you keep some kind of track of how many hours in doing the paint prep and paint ----- not including the metal and bondo work? ------ Just wondering -------------- Looks Really Good -------- Thank You for the paint tips ----- Rodney

I painted my bug in 1990 with deltron off white and no clear coat and it still looks good today. glad I didnt use clear because it probably would have yellowed or checked
deltron clear would have lasted just as long. Kept inside they both last about the same.
back then they were good paint. or glassomax. Or even RM mirrocryl. I used them all and they were all good.

Looks a lot better then my 72 sunroof painted mat blue whoever painted did a horrible job they didn’t cover anything so blue paint is just everywhere it shouldn’t be
You had the camera set up at the corner of the booth while you were spraying; and it appeared that you didn't have the booth end closed/zipped. True or no? If not, interesting that the booth exhausted the overspray without getting into the your garage-Comment? Also you did have the elephant trunk installed and working-correct?
I can but i wanted to leave the door open the overspray just left from the wind. was just about perfect. nothing went into the garage just out to the air. I have had the elephant trunk on it and it does work. I just didnt want to enter in the other side and it would have been a little hot in there with the door shut. I was running out of time and needed to make sure to film the process which would have been harder with the door shut

Watching that booth swaying in the wind a bit worrying
yea after I was done it was really swaying got started way too late. then it started to kink about mid way up that is when I pushed the car into the garage. But it still didnt collapse.

I want to use spies and hecker but it's pretty expensive good paint

just need the pressure high enough it iwill be a little dry but there is really nothing you can do. I angle the gun slightly each direction to make sure I get both sides. whatever else fall out inside there is enough coverage to stop rust and look the right color. It will be a bit dry spray.

no base clear because of the metallics. It lasts longer with metallics.

best to have a 5hp 60 gallon minimum for most body work and air tools. to actually spray with that gun I used probably only 3hp. 20 gal.

Hello Mike. Well done that looks lovely. Question - what do you do about the bits where the car is resting on the framework? Obviously they need a bit of protection too - do you just go over them later with something?
yea just a little touch up. I dint sand blast this either the paint that was there actually corroded. The paint did...... and underneath that was completely clean metal I figured this out when I stripped the back engine compartment. Thought is was rusting throught the paint but it was actually the paint itself. So there is protection on those areas That is why for the most part I dont sand blast unless I need to. because sometimes you take off stuff you cannot recoat like they dipped in the factory.
