    Back then, I used to watch Patriots football religiously. Bledsoe being injured was such a huge concern for us fans. How are we going to win without him? And who is this Brady kid? We're screwed now! Oh boy! How wrong we were. It was the start of the greatest dynasty in football.
    This game is a true piece of history, and I am grateful to get to watch it again, over twenty years later, knowing how it all turned out. Thank you for this post, and for leaving in ALL the footage. Just terrific!!!

    Tom Brady got the win but no way is he EVER permanently replacing Drew Bledsoe someday…he just a game manager at best

    • @johncronin9540
      @johncronin9540 3 роки тому +15

      Yes, I live in New England, and remember that debate at the time. We now know how deeply unhappy Drew was about that situation, and every competitor would probably feel the same. I’m sure Wally Pipp was unhappy when an injury resulted in Lou Gehrig permanently replaced him.
      But publicly, Bledsoe handled it very well, and acted as the professional he was. But he did play an important role, one that many people who weren’t paying attention probably forgot, or weren’t aware of. In the AFC Championship game that postseason in Pittsburgh (where the Steelers were the heavy favorite), Brady got hurt, and Bledsoe came in, and played a key role in winning that game.
      Bledsoe wasn’t angry with Brady, who visited Bledsoe at Massachusetts General Hospital, as Bledsoe was fortunate to survive what really was a critical injury, a sheared artery. That injury could have been fatal. Bledsoe was really upset with Bill Belichick, the Head Coach, because he felt that Belichick had promised him an opportunity to win back his job as starting QB. But Bledsoe was silent about this for the remainder of the season, and never attempted to sabotage the team.
      I don’t know of many fans who have a negative opinion of Bledsoe, and anyone who follows the team knows that he (along with Bill Parcells, and Robert Kraft) played a vital role in keeping the Patriots in New England. They very nearly relocated. Fan interest was very low in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s when the franchise was a disaster both on and off the field, from ownership on down. Collectively, those three men saved the franchise, and in 1993, with the hiring of Parcells, and the drafting of Bledsoe, fan support surged, and the record of sellouts or near sellouts, began. Kraft purchased the team the following year, but he got that opportunity because he already owned the stadium and property, and the Patriots were in an ironclad lease which prevented previous owner,James Busch Orthwein, from relocating the team to St. Louis.
      If Bledsoe had a flaw as a QB, it’s that he had a tendency to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. At times, instead of taking what the opponent would give you (a shorter, but higher probability of a completed pass), he would tend to look for the long pass, and thus held onto the ball a little longer, which would result in a sack or an interception. The difference wasn’t huge between the release time between Bledsoe and Brady, but it was enough for even me to notice it. So you can be sure that Belichick was aware of it. He’s not omniscient, but he doesn’t miss very much.
      This tendency of Bledsoe was what ultimately cost him his job as starting QB when he was reunited with Parcells in Dallas just a few years later. Just before halftime in Dallas, with the Cowboys near or in the red area, Bledsoe improvised on a key play, threw to the opposite side of the field than the play called for, and the result was an interception, that I think the intercepting player ran all the way for a touchdown. Parcells benched Bledsoe at halftime, and I don’t think he ever had an opportunity to get his job back. I remember reading somewhere that when the two were in New England, early in Bledsoe’s career, Parcells would stand behind Bledsoe during practice, with a stopwatch, shouting out each second until Bledsoe released the football. And Bledsoe may have been irritated by this, but he was definitely at his best when Parcells was his Head Coach. That likely was why Bledsoe wanted to play for Dallas when Parcells was coaching there.
      Having said that, looking back after that incredible two decades, and realizing Brady’s greatness, Bledsoe was still a VERY good Quarterback, for whom we in New England were fortunate to have, and he did play a key role, both on the field (though that was brief), and off the field, in helping the Patriots win that first Super Bowl Championship. He’ll always be appreciated here.

    What is lost on so many is that this was the last season of Foxboro stadium. 2002, they opened CGMI stadium, Latter named Gillette in 2002. The old stadium was crap... but LOUD!

      The thing about Gus Johnson is, he's really polarizing. People either really like his commentary, or really hate his commentary. I don't know anyone that is indifferent. Me personally, I don't like his commentary, I prefer the ones that don't really get in the way, or stand out over the game too much. Gus just goes 150% at all times, it's not really my thing. The few Maddens that he was the main commentator were unplayable for me lol.
      I get why people like him though, he can hype up otherwise uninteresting contests.

      I don’t know about all that, Belicheck taught Tommy a lot , Tommy even states that. The man and the kid were both football fanatics, I believe if Tommy ended up anywhere else without Bills guidance he would not have reached his own goals, just my thoughts. And I believe Brady knows this after his Tampa experience ✌️✌️✊✊
