- In today's episode of Sound Like, Rob & Doug use a very special kit to try & recreate the iconic drum sounds of rock legend Neil Peart from Rush. Known for spinning cradles enormous-sized drum kits & legendary drum solos, the guys use Natal's NAMM 2020 Originals maple shell pack along with a collection of Sabian cymbals & Roto power toms!

Neil's style is just so unique that no one could ever replace it
Is it just me or did the drummer not do his homework as far as the drum parts of the songs go?
They didn't even do their homework on the sound of the drums mate. Absolutely half arsed

I think they got the name of the song wrong, it wasnt the 16th groove from Tom Sawyer, although there was a bit of the solo towards the end

Using the standard super heavy paragon ride would’ve been much more authentic to his sound as it’s what he always used. He was also a Remo artist, not an evans artist and I don’t recall him ever using the subs in front of his kicks. I don’t comment critical things normally but I also feel like sarcastically mocking the large set up for being “essential” was in poor taste, especially since he died at the start of the year and was such a high calibre musician for so long. I was so excited when I saw this video pop up but yet again, people don’t give Neil’s sound and playing the effort it deserves.
Not to mention them not even learning or putting any effort into the demo's
Neil actually had some red Evan Hydraulics on his Tama kits at one point.
Also, up until the late 90s, his signature ride cymbal sound was an Avedis Zildjian 22" "ping" ride. 13" "new beat" hi hats were also a mainstay through the 70s, 80s, and most of the 90s. :)
Interestingly, before that, he used blue hydraulics as bottom heads, and looking glass batter heads. For Grace Under Pressure, Neil specifies that the red heads he used were Evans "All Weather Heavy Duty Rock" (top) and "Tom-Tom" (bottom).

Every video in this series feels more like a gear demo more than it does a demonstration of getting a particular artists sound. Everything he used for his entire career is public knowledge, and if you’re going for someone like Peart’s sound, at least learn the parts to the song you’re playing. It just feels like, “hey look at all this stuff we have for sale,” and less like “we spent time learning Peart’s parts and sound and here’s our best effort at approximating his work.” If I had the option to break the bank, I’d be combing the internet for days getting specific cymbal sounds, how he tensioned the heads, listening to Rush even more than I already do, everything possible to get that sound. I don’t know, this series thus far just feels phoned in.

I will always think of sabian and, DW when I think of Neil's gear. I know most see him with tama and Zildjian, but he switched for a reason. When I saw them live on the Clockwork Angels tour, I was blown away by the look, and more importantly the sound, of his gear. I've never heard/played a bad drum/cymbal from dw or sabian. I just wish I could afford them more easily lol. To me, they are the cream of the crop when it comes to drum gear. I will always stand by that statement.

i never seen such an awesome natal setup. i want a kit same. but im poor. i prefer 8 inch melodic toms they say 8 inch . even if they are usually 6 inchers.

I think this series was good when they show us how to tune too, that's the point to "sounding like"..not just showing a kit. You guys do a good job, but these one is full of mistakes, starting with the kind of kit, "Tom Sawyer: 2112??" And the drum parts playing in different ways as the tuning of the drumheads. For more videos like the older ones, when you show us really how to sound like! Tks and keep sharing this job! Amazing channel!

Agreed. I appreciate the effort here but this drum kit sounds nothing like Neil Peart's. Tuning is waaaay too low on most of the higher toms and the timbre is waaay off.
