  • There only is a very small line between overproduced and underproduced, as you will easily be able to judge after you have experienced this one. But at the very end you will also realize there is only one guy to be blamed for everything. EVERYTHING! We bring you the hammer and the nails while we are enjoying our innocence.

In my opinion ANATO features Thomen's best performance and arrangement. He is a genius.

Love this album to death. How come nobody ever talks about Sadly Sings Destiny?

And Then There Was Silence is the most epic, majestic and astonishing song I've ever listened to.

I still think Punishment Divine is one of the most brutal songs I've ever heard. Though it's true that sometimes the album may sound difficult to listen to, I find it underrated anyway.

    So defensive!
    It's just an awesome album!
Yes - it's very rich and quite long and can be tiresome to listen to all of it at one go, but it's still a masterpiece, no less than Nightfall...
The fact that a normal listener is not able to handle it very well does not reduce from its quality.
I wish other topics were discussed here as well.
Would've liked a third part (for NiME too)...

Rich, but tiresome, I think I would have love it more with transition tracks like on NIME.
I understand that this way of producing song could have been a changement Thomen did not like too much, a lot of people want things more simple, yet not one track.
That's why he left then ?

I think in this album the drums have such a major role, relatively to everything else they've made... I think it just became too progressive and artistic for his taste...

I love this album, love the details and it doesn't feel like too much to me. Overproduced? for the complexity and detail it has, it feels just perfect.

And here I thought I was the only one to notice. I did some magic tricks once. I think he has the mug hidden behind his palm (this is called palming) and then it is gone :D
What kind of potion is Hansi drinking? Or is it just a regular tea?

Still they re-recorded ATTWS, and that version has a very different mix.

I agree that ANATO's complexity means you can listen to it again and again and follow the paths of previously hidden layers.

It's amazing to hear how fantastic And Then There Was Silence sounds, even when there are bands today like Avantasia and even in some cases Nightwish, who are trying to replicate the same "epicness" and complexity. There's just something about ATTWS that makes it stand out, and I think it's the fact that no matter what layer you're trying to listen to, it always sounds great. You, know with Avantasia, for example, I can try and listen to the drums and sometimes they won't be great, or certain sections of the orchestra that won't sound great, but ATTWS is just amazing all the way through

11:00 That's actually what got me hooked to Blind Guardian in the first place. I just stumbled across Bard's Song and when I heard the high-pitched part in the end, I was like "what is he doing there, that's some unusual singing technique". So I started listening into their music and first grew to love the opera album and all the other great stuff they made. Even made me read the Silmarillion because Nightfall got me so hooked^^ Nowadays it seems funny to me how I wondered about the bard's song, knowing there is stuff out there like Punishment Divine. But still, his high pitch technique is quite unusual, an important part of his voices character for the BG music, I think.

I know the density of this album isnt to everyone`s taste, but I like it. The songs are all incredible, especially And Then There Was Silence. (this is something I do, I dont know if anyone else does; I follow various `threads` of a song for a little bit. Picking out one element of a song and hearing it interact with everything else is a really interesting experience.)

I just have two problems with that album.
    1. Hansi, why layer your voice? I know you do it always, but damn, it's a huge waste of the beautiful sound you can make
    2. When you use so damn much tracks, at least record them with better quality lmao
Anyway, one of my fav albums

Punishment Divine just blows my mind every single time I hear it, the vocals on this song are insane, for a power metal song it's fucking brutal.

You can tell that Thomen would be difficult to work with musically. I have a friend like this who always flip flopped his opinions. They are still friends with him, but he wasn't down with going so epic.
