After years of being in the wrong hemisphere to see Epica, I got myself to Amsterdam last week to see them live for the first time. It was a special concert as they performed with the live orchestra and choir. This song was the closer. I wasn’t planning on the mosh pit, but the circle pit opened up next to me and I ran in on a whim haha. As you mentioned, they always look to enjoy playing live which is infectious. Simone is awesome, but she does take a step back in this song, so don’t worry about forgetting to mention her here. The whole band is incredible, not all their songs have solos, but when they do decide to throw one in, it’s so tasty.
I think it was 2006 when I heard it live the first time. Epica was touring N. America opening for Kamelot. It was their tour for the album Consign to Oblivion.
@@trokoshea1 the album "consign to oblivion" was released in 2005. i was wrong by one year, although technically the song itself could have been written back in 2004 😁
The name of this band is NOT false advertising. This song is just perfection, it's so smooth, polished, heavy and interesting! It's like a baroque symphony with kickdrums and 7 string guitars! Really digging the dive into theory and improv session you did after the song, that is exactly what I want from reactors, thank you.
The best $60 I ever spent was Epica's Omega Alive to watch during lockdown. Has to be seen to be believed. That wasn't a streaming concert, Omega Alive is an experience.
This is the title track from their second album from 2005 so it has stood the test of time. They still use it as a closing number or encore even to this day. Just an awesome song.
What a great analysis man! Epica is for me the best symphonic band ever. New suscriber =) You should check “Kingdom of Heaven part 3” from Omega Alive (live stream concert during COVID - awesome show-). Also you should check “The Holographic Principle” (studio version- unfortunately they don’t play it live). Keep them coming!! Cheers
Just saw them in their recent amsterdam show. They performed this song, and the wall if death opened about 5 feet from me. A bit too much at my age, but the criwd and the band are definitely having fun the whole performance. It was amazing to see.
Epica live is ridiculously good haha technicians at the right point, heavy and melodic at the same time and very executed transitions… from classic to melodic death in minutes
Great analysis man. Epica has many masterpieces in this caliber, although this one is up there at the top 5. Check out this top notch masterpiece that is not being reviewed very often in YT - Epica - The Holographic Principle - A Profound Understanding of Reality
It do make sense that a symphonic metal band like Epica create a wall of death(wall of epica) as even they do have ballads, and the symphonic orchestra, they also got a lot of songs with death metal riffs and growls.. btw, that Simone hold the mic to Coen(the keyboard player) is kind of a trick, he pretend to do the scream, but it is infact Mark who do all the other growls, that is screaming.. It is a perfect end to the show, and Epica used it like that many times..
I had the chance to see Epica wth Orchestra and choir just a week ago on ther "Symphonic Synergy" show. It was awesome. They recorded it, and so I hope in a couple of maoths, we get some neat live videos from it. In terms of symphonic metal, I consider Epica masters in giving orchestra and choir a very distictive voice, and not just make it background sound. There song whch demonstrates this best is "The Holographic Principle - A Profound Understanding of Reality". there is unfortunately not good live video of it, but there s a beautifull lyrics video here: ua-cam.com/video/CYlQJ_t2iks/v-deo.html I suggest you put it into your beanie of justice.

@@PittDaddy I agree with the last part. But in your first comment you called them "another level of prog", as in mind-bending prog or smth.
