This is pretty hard to watch. Its clear that congress has no bearing on what is going on inside the military. They should probably try listening to the people that are actually in charge of the military instead of trying to politically humiliate them. The general is simply being practical that they do not have the resources to accomplish this task on their own and the senator, in typical political fashion, over simplified the argument to gain political favor by pretending that this is an argument about a moral dilemma instead of an argument about being unable to sustain a policy of aggression due to restrictions that were, ironically, set in place by the government itself. So, why do we have people in congress that go out of their way to discredit the military, of which are completely subservient to congress, over congress's own mistakes?
That'd be great and I am about a third of the way in agreement - except for the obvious contradiction of a General who is very clearly stating that the U.S. DOES have the resources before stating that the U.S. should not commit those resources. And simply because the military is subservient to Congress is not an excuse for General Austin's inability to articulate a clear position. After all, there's nothing that prevents anyone from remaining respectful while also defending his statements with facts.

The ressources to a No Fly Zone aren´t the same ressources you need for a buffer zone, enough boots on the ground, heavy armed boots(translated into heavy weapons included armor, Atillery anti air defense)

Sen. McCain is utterly illogical. The General simply said no major changes have occurred militarily, the situation is stalemated between combatants...and Sen. McCain starts grandstanding about how tragic the situation is, which has NOTHING to do with assessing the current relationship between combatants.

I find a lot of what Mccain says to be questioned in his logic over the years, however two years after the Syrian war hearing with McCain and Austin in this video, it appears McCain was exactly right, and Bashar Assad still is in control with all the devastation having taken place in Syria. In hindsight since this hearing, Austin had no plan to stop Asaad and we are left with refugees having taken flight, if they didn't die, and Austin's 'plan' having no effect on Assad or his government.

As a military leader, the general should be ready to recommend operations that may approximate policy objectives. Just recommending status quo is at best unhelpful and at worst obstructive.

However, it seems that he has in mind a policy already made by the Executive against which he is unwilling to go, or at least fearful of being inconsistent with. Is he talking for himself or the Executive? It seems that his hesitance is due to possible political consequences that his free professional opinion may bring. In my humble view, that is unacceptable and explains why our presence in Syrian lacks military cojones and obeys civilian sensibilities to an excessive degree, making us look weak and confused.

Generals are very well paid, and rightly so, but they need to answer direct questions from representatives of the public ,just as they themselves expect.

Yes and the soldier in this case attended West Point, has a Masters degree and is appearing before a Senate hearing. He is expected to at least be able to answer the questions placed before him in a manner that is both consistent and reasonable. If nothing else, he would simply be following the chain of command as his duty requires.
Austin was a "fall guy" for this matter here just like they will attempt to make him the "fall guy" in the Afghanistan exit debacle.

He is inconsistent, lacking leadership skills, and most importantly we had American forces in that AO near Syrian borders, Soldiers and Marines in particular, and his insight regarding the circumstances back then should have been MUCH MORE INFORMED, his layout of operational status and safeguards should have dominated his responses. Refugee status indicates the level of intensity to include Syrian forces, ISIS, Turkey, and Iraq.
Instead, he stutters while looking dumbfounded and illiterate to his responsibilities.....
Optempo of our forces in that AO, are somewhat based on mission requirements requiring mission oriented responses to what McCain was talking about....

He said he doesn't recommend it, but the General never said why he didn't (he was never given the opportunity to, nor asked). Yes, you could donate all your money and assets to a random homeless person on the street, which would be great for them. However, I wouldn't recommend it because you're now a poor homeless person; nothing has changed. Also, at this point, they'd been in Mid-east for like 30 years, and the General may have seen it as nothing more than a waste of resources if he thought the entire operation would fail (remember, he wasn't asked or allowed to elaborate on why he said we could help, but we shouldn't)

The part of this I find most troubling is the Civilian leader asking the General about policy when it is fact the Civilian Leaders job to form policy and the military leaders job to carry it out. Generals don't get to formulate their own foreign policy initiatives. That is the purview of our civilian government.

@@nutsackmania Last I checked, the President has the title of Commander-in-chief of U.S. armed forces. Congress hasn't declared war since WWII so they've left most of the responsibility for major military decisions up to the President, especially after the passage of the Patriot Act. They may pass funding for the military but they don't want to be responsible for any decision that could backfire on them.

Well, there was no buffer zone, and, we could've actually created a buffer zone or a no-fly zone. The net effect was that a lot of people died.
The general did not offer enough alternatives.

@@zoecarlibur Useful second video reference, thanks. These two videos are at different times. Earlier than both, we announced a goal of regime change for Assad without a clear game plan. We were being stalled and dissimulated on the diplomatic front. The senators and DoD people were talking past each other, while Kurdish allies and innocent civilians were being punished on the ground.
If we stood up our capability fast enough, Russia may have been deterred, especially if our stated primary goal was protecting allies and civilians. Indeed, vigorously pursuing our goal of regime change would've required an escalation. Taking more subtle steps toward the protection goal should've been possible, and that's why McCain, who was an airman, was getting so frustrated. The quality of the thinking from DoD was mediocre.

Pres-Elect Biden made a great choice with Austin. A good step to end forever wars, as Austin clearly is advocating for a more measured approach. I respect McCain but his foreign policy was always way off in my view.
