Just the sound alone of this weapon of war strikes fear into all our enemies. You hear seventy thirty caliber rounds a second hitting the ground in close proximity before you even hear the plane fire. Not only accurate, lethal, and versatile, its payload is threatening. The 30cal was enough, 1000 rounds max due to the weight. But it can still carry almost anything as well. Anti-air, air to ground heavy payloads. As the senator said; simply ask soldiers on the ground how effective this is.
It has the highest friendly fire rate according to Air Force stats that cherry-picked data, for years that showed what the Fighter Mafia wants to show. If you include 2009 data, the B-1 is the top killer of friendlies and civilians. When a government watchdog group called out the Air Force on their bullshit report, the USAF said they did NOT claim the A-10 had the worst friendly fire rate, and it’s not their fault some reporter put that in a headline. The USAF spokesperson went on to say that the A-10 was the next most accurate plane after the F-15E and had the next lowest rate of friendly-fire per mission after the F-15E. Meanwhile the F-15 and F-35 each cost 3 times more, per flight hour.
You know what's actually embarassing? That Congress is telling the USAF to hurry up and field the F-35, develop new drones, and get rid of old aircraft, then whines and moans about the budget when the USAF attempts to fulfill any of those missions. For that man to tell the General that its somehow HIS FAULT that the AF is underfunded for what Congress wants it to accomplish is utterly disgraceful.
Sen. McCain knew something about the CAS mission. He spent half a decade tortured and chained to concrete and steel performing one in his A-4 Skyhawk. So effing funny that Secretary Air Force broad and Pentagon general tried to BS the Vietnam scooter driver...

So keeping in service the plane with one of the highest blue on blue record in history and has itself one of the lowest survivability record of any Fighter/attacker in US inventory, is the best way to win a war with minimum casualties ? Like, it doesn't even have the most amount of ground unit destroyed, the fricking F-111 aardvark which was retired in 1998 did that job better than the A-10

The Military-Industrial Complex, the one that keeps requesting expensive junk the military has not requested or needs in the future wars, the geniuses on the armed services committee recommended abolishing the A10 (which does not make enough month for some contractors) and swapping it out for more expensive platforms (F16, F15, B1-bomber) that would not serve as well. Sen. McCain pointed this out in a Senate Armed Services Committee.
The A-10 makes contractors a ton of money. Boeing alone made 2 billion off the re-winging program. The A-10 is an absolute money pit, but congressmen love to hide these costs.

Although I disagree with his stance on the issue, I have faith that the General is simply trying to do what he thinks is right. He may just be seeing a different path to a common end goal, but McCain appears content on refusing to see things from another point of view... A very experienced and decorated one at that.
The air force wants to retire the A10 because close air support is used to defend troops on the ground. Specifically, the army and marines.
