- Recycling the unrecyclable? Our #ecofluencer Jenni visited Terracycle, a company that recycles cigarette butts.
The cigarette trash which is collected through Terracycle's "Cigarette Waste Recycling Program" is recycled into a variety of industrial products, such as plastic pallets, and any remaining tobacco is recycled as compost. Cigarette butts are one of the most common forms of litter and are polluting our environment! Cigarette waste contains toxic chemicals, the filters are made of tiny plastic particles and they harm plant growth.

Good that they can be recycled but is this not too inefficient and will have a detrimental effect?
Hello James, thanks a lot for your feedback! Looking at the huge amount of cigarette waste everywhere, we think it is still very good that it can be recycled. So far, Terracycle is the only company who recycles them as far as we know. We don't think that this will have a detrimental effect. Best regards Team Bracenet
BRACENET Save the seas. Wear a net. Yeah it’s great they can, my concern is as they’re the only people to recycle them that the logistics of getting them to them would outweigh the carbon footprint of not recycling them, if that makes sense.
Also embalming fluid pollutes ground water when someone is embalmed for a funeral and buried and can never be undone.

What is the liquid used to wash and clean the cigarette butts with and where does that liquid end up
Can you tell me the full process in detail pls ??
They collect them, separate them, wash them, and melt them into pellets that can then be used to create new consumer items.
Any metals like from the aluminum paper packaging inside are separated are sent to recycling facilities that will smelt them into metal sheets.
Any glass collected will be cleaned and crushed then melted to make recycled glass containers
Then once they turn all of that waste into raw material it is sold to manufacturing companies to make new consumer products and thus its full circle recycling

Do you use certain chemicals? or use standard? laundry detergent or all-natural ingredients? personally, I'd like to know... So my mother doesn't react to the nicotine smell of the cigarette butts.

Instead of extruding them into pellets (otherwise known as nurdles) which can easily pollute other areas (Michigan has a huge nurdle problem and I'd rather not have any more nurdles on my local beaches)

Okay but everything is biodegradable. Literally everything. Fungus is the number one decomposer on this planet with bacteria as number two. Under the right conditions and with the right organisms literally everything is biodegradable

Making cigarette butts into ashtrays? RYFR That is some mega cringe right there, why not make them into pipes for meth addicts while you're at it!
That already exists: it’s called the needle exchange program where the government takes nasty ass needles and gives new clean ones to addicts, with our tax dollars!
I’d rather fund this program!!
And to my understanding they just started a safer smoking kit that contains everything to promote smoking drugs (except a pipe).
