A substance abuse counselor, certainly someone who should know better. Sobriety is a choice, getting behind the wheel while intoxicated is another choice.

I could imagine someone under the influence getting behind the wheel thinking if they were careful they would get home undetected. I can't imagine that person speeding on city streets and a substance abuse counselor at that. It is just unimaginable.

Drunks are going to drive if they have the means. Suspending licenses is not enough. We need to take away cars and never give them back. In many states, a second DUI is now a felony, and things used in the commission of a felony can be seized. The legal mechanism is there, they just refuse to use it.

The Agency where the Suspect was working should get a Big Bulletin Board. On this Bulletin Board it should include the Suspects Position at the Agency, and the fact that he wrote a book, the Suspects mugshot, the names of each Victim Killed and each Victim Injured. It should also include all of the Charges against the Suspect, what the Suspect gets convicted for and how much time he gets in Prison!
The Substance Abuse Agencies should use this Tragedy as an example of what happens when you drink and drive. Also this Tragedy should be used as an Example for those struggling with Alcohol Addiction to keep fighting for their own Sobriety.

I have a crazy idea. No driving while under the influence of any recreational drug/alcohol. NO DRIVING. Police can breath test ANY driver at ANY time for ANY reason. Refusing a test is automatic arrest and forced blood test. Set limits to half of what they are now. DUI is automatic one year jail sentence, five year ban on driving, $10,000 fine MINIMUM. Any accident or crime committed during DUI is considered intentional, first degree. Any harm caused during DUI results in forfeiture of vehicle. (if vehicle belongs to someone other than the driver, they are free to sue that driver for compensation) No alcohol or recreational drug use in the same 12 hour time period as driving, PERIOD. Any resistance to arrest, testing, court appearances, etc.. adds MIN 1 year additional jail sentence. Any interference from family, friends or other assorted knuckleheads results in charges of accessory after the fact. Anyone who helps or encourages driving under the influence is considered an accessory. Anyone driving during a five year DUI ban receives a lifetime driving ban, and forfeiture of vehicle. Obviously, vehicles that are stolen will be confiscated and returned to their owners.
One year of this protocol, strictly and aggressively enforced, will result in the most dramatic decrease in road slaughter in the history of the automobile.
Now, why he have a job as a substance abuse counselor when he obviously abuses substances himself. What a crock.....

A few years ago on the 4th of July I was standing outside my garage enjoying an adult beverage and a cigar when I noticed a car go by at a rate of speed way too fast for the road. Couple seconds later I heard, screech, pow! Dude lost it in a curve and hit a tree. It was gruesome. One of his hands was ripped off and his ribs were sticking out of his body. Turns out he was at a party all day and had been drinking heavily. He was only a couple miles from home. Don't drink and drive.
