    Thanks Sam,
    It does help. Maybe I was a little too sensitive, but after meeting Doug, his wife and having him personally explain and demo the rationale for the brochures, the grinding angles, etc, I was amazed at how it cut through the complexity out there. Thanks for the prompt reply. Still a fan and looking forward to more from you.

    I bought three Doug Thompson turning tools a while back. A 1/4 inch detail spindle gouge and 3/8 & 1/2 inch "V" flute bowl gouges. I made my own handles for them. Living in Ohio, I was able to buy them at his shop. Since then I have looked at the web site several times drooling over all the goodies listed. When I make my next purchase I WILL buy a few of his handles to go along with the tools.

      I have probably six or seven of Doug's tools. This is my first Thompson tool handle. It is really awesome.
      And the engraving was free.

    I know this video is old and you may not check comments. I like your videos, but raked exception with your trashing of the flyers that Doug and company packs with each shipment. For new turners, this is extremely great reference information and helps sort through the maze of information. In addition talking with Doug for 15 minutes, you gain the best understanding of the difference between a spindle gouge and a detail spindle gouge and why there is a place for both in your arsenal. The reference flyer is even of heavier paper to allow for posting near your grinder for ease of setup and repeatability.

      Kim, I do check my comments and try to respond to each. I went back and looked at the clip where I talked about the flyers. I do not believe I trashed these flyers in any way. I took the flyers from my friend.....went home and ordered one of Dougs tools. This is what I refereed to when I say "I made a mistake and kept them (the flyers). Keeping the flyers resulted in buying a tool. I do agree I was a little unclear on this. I love Doug's too, I probably have 10 of them. I hope this clears this up.Sam

    Doug makes the best tools for the money. I find that I use his detail gouges more than spindle gouges for spindle work. He also make a fine line of skews and of course bowl gouges. It looks like you are going to love your 5/8" spindle gouge.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning 8 років тому

      What size detail gouge are you using? One of the demonstrators at the symposium used the 1/2 and 5/8 Thompson detail gouges for everything and did not use a bowl gouge. I found that interesting.

    • @mgorrow
      @mgorrow 8 років тому

      Mike, I use a 3/8" detail gouge the most both for spindle work and often for the dimple in a round bottomed bowl. It can also be used most place that I would use a skew. Some find it more user friendly. I prefer a 1/4" or 3/8" round skew for small beads and other slow curves. I do use bowl gouges for bowl work.

      I do have a number of Thompson gouges. They are excellent. But this particular tool, for a spindle gouge, may be a bit large for most applications. Since I bought it I have found it works well in specific situations. But It IS a spindle gouge and does not really substitute for a 5/8" bowl gouge. So you may consider a smaller spindle gouge. Sam

    • @prsearls
      @prsearls 3 роки тому

      I should have said my desired 5/8 gouge is a bowl gouge. I don’t do as much spindle turning as I used to. This could change however. Thanks for your comment on Thompson tools. Do you use removable handles?

    Is the handle heavier then a wood handle with same length? I have a couple DWay handles and find them heavier then I prefer and end up using my Sorby tools over the DWay for this reason. I’m about to order some Thompson gouges (fluteless and V gouge) and was considering ordering his handles but worry they will be too heavy as well. Do you mind weighing your 16” handle so I can compare the weight with my DWay handle? Thanks Sam and I’ve learned a lot from your videos!

    I think Doug may cross you off his Christmas card list, as he was insistent that spindle gouges don't have swept back wings, sacrilege he would say. 😃😃😃
    It looks a good tool to me but a little too big for me as a spindle gouge.
    Thanks
    James

    • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER
      @WYOMINGWOODTURNER  4 роки тому +1

      Yes I do agree that this gouge is a little large for a spindle tool. I use it more for work on bowls. Sharpening this tool with the Oneway jig did sweep back the wings a bit-is that what you are referring to? Sam

    • @icespeckledhens
      @icespeckledhens 4 роки тому

      @@WYOMINGWOODTURNER hi Sam, I was joking. I watched a very interesting video by Doug Thomson and he explained his work as a repair engineer manager for Ford and how he started making gouges in his garage. He said he sharpens all the tools, with the one way wolverine system, before they leave the factory and made it very clear 60° bevel angle with swept back wings for all bowl gouges and 40° bevels for spindle gouges and they never have swept back wings.Thats where my remark, with humour, came from. Unfortunately, all my spindle gouges have swept back wings and your vortex gouge looks good with a lot going for it.
      Thanks for the videos and I hope you and your family stay safe jn these difficult times.

      I am not sure how long the handle is but probably 16". I think After using this tool for a long while, this tool is too large for a spindle gouge at least for my purposes. I think you could go with a bowl gouge instead. Now, I love Doug's tools. I have probably 6 or 7 of them. But I do use this tool, just not too often. Sam

    Sir, I got the impression that this new tool was not cutting at all well. I know absolutely nothing about turning wood as I am a metal machinist. I have watched a lots of your videos and the other tools you used in the past seemed to cut much better and do a better job. Could it be a case of you getting used to a new type of tool, or is it the wood you were using. I often see you and Captain Eddy using a 3/8 inch Deep Groove Finger Gouge, with excellent results, what will this larger and shallower gouge achieve ? Thanks.

      The tool was cutting fine. I am sure I was being a bit tentative with it. It was literally the first time I used it. In answer to your last question, I am still learning what this tool will do. I have found some places where I think it will work better than a bowl gouge......Sam

    That 5/8" gouge with a shallow flute should be able to reach a long way over the tool rest without chatter. I'd think it would be good for hollowing out a goblet or box, too. Now, that I've come up with reasons why this gouge is a necessity, I'm sure I'll be able to explain it to my wife....
