    I feel sorta bad for Phibian. He was obviously pretty proud of his story contributions, even keeping the ending a secret, only for it to now be a secret forever as it was all thrown out.

      Hearing noa acting so proud of his complete botch job while he tries to narrate and talk about it in lowered overly interested tone , like hes convinced hes created some sort of john carpenter esque horror masterpiece lmao. His tone really comes off as "and now for the moment youve all really come here for, for the thing that really elevates this into something more".
      Meanwhile, literally nobody likes the generic garbage hes clearly so in love with. Ruined what was shaping up to be something genuinely cool. Not only that, but gave himself a very self masturbatory long ass time to waffle on at us about his artistic process and how horrified we should all be at his "genius" centipede creation, lmao. Absolutely embarrassing.

      Feels like this should be a running gag, but it's ruining the game.
      Don't get me wrong. There is time and space for a centi-thing, but it ruins the fun if this comes up almost every time.

    The problem wasn't the centipede, the problem was coming in as the 6th developer and not bothering to take the time to understand the work done before you. Like if you're the 2nd developer, go on, go ahead, add in a dancing penguin, its still the brainstorming phase and there are no wrong answers; but you're the 6th, you are supposed to complete the work, not toss it out.

      I feel like this could be mitigated by doing this in pairs; like, instead of going Dev 1, then Dev 2, then Dev 3, you have Dev 1 and Dev 2 working together, then move on to Dev 2 and Dev 3 working together, then Dev 3 and Dev 4, et cetera... that way there's always someone from the previous version to keep things on track.

      ​@@captaincomic8678 I think that would ruin the whole 'not communicating' theme since figuring out what the previous devs are thinking and add your own twist is part of the charm too. I think they should just enforce a rule that if something is in the game, the dev can not outright scrap it. They can try to alter it to some extend but not outright removing or changing it completely.

      I like how a Dev who thinks they have a better idea has the freedom to follow through with it. As a Dev, you should not be pigeon holed into just working on what is already there, but doing what you believe the game needs. When the last dev got rid of all the enemies for one, it made it scarier.

      That really is the worst part, because he seems genuinely convinced that his vision is what ultimately matters, which...sure, his vision is technically what decides the ultimate state of the game, as he's the last developer, but it's weird that he didn't seem to consider that it didn't fit *his* vision because it was made in the combined visions of *others* , and that he might have to tinker with his to slide it into place
      I said it in another comment response already, but he was the only developer treating this like it wasn't a multi-developer project, and yet, he was the one tasked with deciding the end result-

    I gotta agree with the other comments here. While I appreciate the work Noa put in, he basically swept the entire game under the rug to fit his own vision. I'm a bit disappointed.

      Something that bothers me is that simplified centipede in the thumbnail which isn’t even in the video as far as I saw. I can imagine if it had showed the actual game before he touched it in the thumbnail it would’ve been a little too obvious how much of the game he changed lol

      Also the games always ends up with their own style, which is a bit saturated. I’m not a fan of it but it was a bit overused, would be nice to let other people “own” the art styles.

      I think it actually went downhill with Codeer, because instead of focusing on what was given he just plastered extra resources. Mixing that with the idea that, if Noa didn't add shooting mechanics - this could have been a nice escape centipede game, when running through maze type of game. Especially imagine if that original light mechanic was present - having a Game Over where you look everywhere and Centipede is circling you down, would be an actually fresh horror game experience. More like Little Nightmares instead of Monster Hunter.

      @@mjm3091 bro this video was too make a horror game with 6 devs, all of them having to share the glory of making the game in a few short hours, they could add whatever they wanted, but what Noa did was not sharing the credit, he basically changed the whole game, adding of what seems to be a boss, changing the art style, and changing the story of the game. And there’s a lot of games already with a boss like that, for example Choo Choo Charles, he may not be everywhere but he’s a big factor in the game. So Noa made the game into an generic horror game, not being fresh. Also Little Nightmares is nothing like this game. Oh dear I turned this into a paragraph-

    I genuinely felt a pit form in my stomach when I saw that Noa scrapped so much content from the previous devs and took the game in a completely different direction. Even the thumbnail is misleading to fit Noa's vision of the game. I was having a lot of fun binging this series up until this point. This went a step beyond the misunderstandings that the devs had in the previous videos. This was a video of one of your guys completely discounting the work of every single one of your guest developers and turning what they had pieced together into a completely different, utterly unrelated experience, and quite frankly much poorer experience. I am highly disappointed with how Noa handled this project, and I am glad to see most of the comments calling him out as well. Take the negative reception you've received from this video and expand on and refine this series idea in the future. Every guest developer you invite to work on these projects in the future deserves more respect and appreciation than what you have shown them here.

      Good comment, I agree. I have seen Noa do similar things in the past too. Def shouldn't be participating anymore. That was messed up. He even took the time to read and look at it all. And still scrapped it... made the game a mess too. So much going on and I couldn't tell what the hell he was doing... a crossbow? Wtf 😅

    Noa, if the rest of the devs work doesnt fit your idea, reshape your idea!!
    The game had an effective thematic layer, and a gameplay goal that meshed well with it. The idea of scavenging and surviving and being uncertain what's real and whats not. and then you take all that out and make them fight a big centipede.

    I totally get that there's zero communication and that the story notes were probably easy to miss, but Noa must have at least noticed the sanity and vision mechanics and the hospital theme and art style. Throwing all that out to turn it into an action game with the typical Blackthornprod art style was pretty lame.

      Technically the hospital theme and art was still there, so was the sanity mechanic. The vision mechanic was long gone.

      @@vitorluisdias908 true all the other developers kept changes to a minimum and mainly made additions. The first thing he does is make changes and he kept doing so until the game lost its originality.

    Ok, couple of rules to add.
    1. Each dev is permitted one asset deletion, like when that guy deleted the coins.
    2. If the game arrives to you with an art style or story that people have clearly put significant time into you are not permitted to completely redo it all.
    So in this video Noah would have been disqualified and either Phibian's would be considered final version or Phibian's would be passed on to a more respectful dev to finish.

    It was really interesting to see the game evolve right up until my man just scrapped the whole thing. Imagine going through all the work of writing story and recording and editing your own voice lines just for the guy after you to delete literally all of it.
    The last man changed the title, the objective, the enemies, the mechanics, everything...
    Like- centipede idea is cool and all, but the game the other devs made together just got deleted by the last guy :(
    I'm overreacting about it but still, it just seems silly 😔
    Last guy I still talented and did an impressive amount of work in his time slot, so don't think I'm just trashing on him, I just think his approach was off :P

      2) the game was about not seeing them, I dont really think that it's a good idea for that (I don't know)
      3) the whole concept was the atmosphere, the tension, adding details to the enemies doesn't really add to that
      And 4) if you were playing that game, im sure you would get scared or at least start getting jumpy playing the game, you never know till you do it ┐(゚~゚)┌ (whoops, writing error, fixed)

    Seeing AIA finding a vision for this project enlightened me, while Phibian's enhancements were great, I was disappointed by Noa literally scrapping the whole game and creating a worse, more generic experience.

      yeh, the spirit of the pass the game challenge for me is to build upon the game you get, not just throw it all out... ofcourse sometimes stuff gets removed that does not fit. but if a dev already made artwork and a story and stuff its just disrespectful to throw that all out... especially because i thought it was really cool ^^

    You should really allow Phibian to release his version of the game too. It's a shame a lot of his/the other devs work and the story he built is now gone because you just wanted to make your own thing. I'm glad you've seemed to have learnt from this experience, but allowing him to release that version too seems like the fair thing to do, especially with a channel that has become increasingly focused on collaboration and team building amongst devs.

      Although I do think your being a bit harsh here, I didnt really like the turn Noa did aswell. This game had as a "main thing" the light and sanity, avoiding monsters. But then it turned into a bossbattle.

    How about the following idea: 1 developer creates a game in 5-6 hours, then the game is given to 2 people, they work on it for 6-7 hours, and from each of them the game is given to 2 more people. In general, you get 4 games made from the 1st. It will be interesting how they will differ?

    I was pretty ok with the centipede until I heard they changed the story. I wanted to see a man whose grappling with their sanity, whose mind has conjured a long extremely long monster that you could see wherever you look, I wanted to see the story before it was altered at the end because it was cool and when I heard he scrapped it and turned it into a shooter I was so put off.       Noah, I can tell you worked hard on this. but, I'm gonna be honest with you here.
      you are like that guy in a group who sits there, listening to everyone's ideas. waits till the entire project is done only to say "nope, don't like it," and make something else on your own.
      you weren't suppose to change the entire game. just build off the others. Not remake the whole thing. Each Dev is suppose to build upward from each layer. helping to repair any damage to the layers below and then building their own layer. not tearing the entire building down and making your own building. being the final one, you were suppose to polish the game and finalize it.
      while your game is cool. it isn't what the others were pointing towards. while yes, there was no communication. you could simply look at the past work and figure out what the theme and ideas were.

      He should have played the game in full before that, and than built an enemy based off of the story line.
      The other devs removed things that overall decreased the games horror aspect, but this guy just removed a whole story line cause he couldnt slow his roll.
      I liked that he gave the enemy an identity. But why only one??!! The whole system was made for like multiple enemies. He should given the multiple blobs a look based off of the last devs story line, and then one boss fight. 😐😐😐

    I have started to notice a partern. Every game turns into a fight.
    The bug game? Kill the king instead of help the queen.
    The building game? Kill the giant instead of survive.
    This creepy exploration game? The mechanics got adjusted bit by bit and focused on sanity, then last developer scratched everything and made it a monster killing game.
    It's becoming a one trick pony. I was genuinly intrigued by this game until it became a shooter game. It went from "I'm going to try the game" to "just a lowly shooter, I've seen it before."
    Liam and Noah, can you try to avoid shooter? I want to see something else.

Sorry you didn't like it, my reasoning was that the vending machines and other stuff shown that AIA couldn't add in the allotted time were not actually in the game files and there wasn't an indication that it was the direction the game was taking. Had I known, I would've definitely tried to implement these systems. Thanks for the feedback though.

The entire point of this series is that there’s no communication, why are you getting mad when one person doesn’t understand the very specific direction another dev wants to take? The coins were a minor thing anyways, and there were way larger changes made in this video by other devs (not that that’s an inherently bad thing; again, no communication means these things happen.)

    It really doesn't feel like a horror game any more when the goal is to kill one, identifiable monster. This concept, for the most part, only works when there are many, nearly undefinable threats that, rather than fight, you must escape and out-maneuver.

      Yes! The game will feel bland and boring and the lore will also be boring. There will also be little to no story and most notes being said useless. Like the voices Phibian made. I feel like he could have changed it and kept their story while implementing some of his too. Like adding a bunker or something for the centipede. the boss. who lays the weird little creatures. but he scrapped it all and probably only played through the game once not paying attention. he scrapped the flash light (for no reason why) and gave them a crossbow for some reason. and this is all still in a hospital.

    Liam came up with an idea for the games main gimmick.
    Kyle, Codeer, AIA and Phibian all looked at this idea and thought about how they could enhance this core mechanic, adding new gameplay features, sound, graphics, etc.
    But it feels like Noa didn't look at what he was given with the thought of how he could enhance the given formula, but rather with the thought of how he could shift this formula to fit into what he wanted the game to be.
    It really doesn't help that the final product feels like a very generic monster slasher.
    And while he is well within his rights to do all of this, I feel like knowing what you want the game to be before even looking at what the others have come up with, then scrapping a majority of what they did to get closer to your original vision kind of defeats the whole purpose of this challenge.
    I'm not trying to attack anyone or call their work bad here, all of these people are significantly more talented at creating games than I am, but I feel some constructive critisism is needed here to avoid repeating this in the future.

    Game looks cool. I like how that one guy added art and a story, and the next expanded on that. The idea that this took place in a hospital was very solid, reminded me of Afraid of Monsters (the precursor to Cry of Fear). But then that guy in the end scrapped everything and it just became a pitch black location with pitch black enemies and you gotta shoot em. And I agree with the other comments, its very generic, and whilst the others tried to convey the original intent and expand on it, this guy was just straight up disrespectful. He didn't even play the game and see the notes, he just made his own version straight away.

    Ahh yes, there are too many enemies that prevent tension from building for the player, to work around this we removed all the enemies in exchange for a single boss and gave the player a gun so the only threat in the game could be killable. It's like saying "Wow, amnesia the dark descent sure was a scary atmospheric horror game with lore scattered around and a constantly draining sanity meter that you managed with light and tinctures and avoiding looking at monsters. For the sequel, let's give the main character a gun so they can kill the threats instead of having to carefully navigate around them." Great, now the only threat is time in the darkness since the gun can just remove the other threats.
    It's not like guns just remove the tension of a game though. In silent hill you get a gun quite early but the game is still amazingly tense. The big difference is the goal, In silent hill 1 your goal is to find your lost daughter and the gun is a means of limited self defense while working towards that goal. In the centipede, the goal is to kill the centipede and the crossbow is the means to that end, turning your weapon from "I need to conserve my uses of this incase I need it later" to "I have the win condition for the entire game now" you stop being the hunted and immediately become the hunter. Even worse is you start with the crossbow, you don't even have to search for the scattered lore and keys to find the room with it, you just have to find some extra ammo and pills to survive the fight, you don't even have to explore since there's a circle directly left of the starting room that summons the centipede to you and it's just far enough away from the starting room door that items will randomly spawn there for you to restock on every item before going back to the circle to keep fighting.
    I beat the game just by leaving the starting room, gathering the items immediately outside and making a run to the circle, using all my ammo and then going back to the spawn room door to restock. It took a little over a minute to do and completely negates the entire atmosphere, lore and strategy of the game where as the previous iteration would have made me explore the entire area looking for keys and actually engage with the lore and atmosphere of the area while avoiding the horrors.
    Is it a bad horror game? I'd say yes since, while the atmosphere is ok, you start the game with the tools you need to easily beat the only actual threat in the game and can immediately do so without having to engage with the atmosphere. When the player is given tools to fight the monsters then the monsters stop being scary and it's up to the atmosphere, level design and sound design to keep the player tense. The level design can be completely ignored since exploration is entirely optional with a giant "Stand on me to fight boss" circle 5 seconds from the starting room. The sound design consists of a constant low droning with squishy sounds meant to resemble the centipede rustling around you, the intention being that no matter where you go you're always in danger except you already have all the tools to defend yourself so the danger isn't actually that dangerous.
    Hindsight is always rough, but the concept is good. I think it could be refined to a fine polish if given time. For example you could keep the exploration from the previous iterations with periods of dead silence to help build tension in the darkness while you go room to room looking for keys and finding the lore. One thing I adored from the centipede when I did choose to explore the level is sometimes you would just see the centipedes body motionlessly blocking a hall, but since it's not an object you can just walk through it. Instead the body could be a physical thing that, because it's blocking your path, you're forced to find a way around it, the obvious fear being "Of the 2 directions I can go to get around it, which side is the head?" Forcing the player to potentially walk into the literal jaws of the beast based on an unlucky coin flip and then have to escape. All of this would eventually lead to the player unlocking the room with the crossbow and fighting the centipede. You still run into the problem of "I have a weapon now, time to win" but in this iteration the player has had to fully engage with the game to get their win condition as opposed to spawning with it.

    Few notes for preserving original devs additions/ideas
    I understand that less vision would actually be more tense, but instead of replacing it with a flashlight that stays static, it could have been cool to see the beam narrow with sanity decreasing. Could be explained as tunnel vision or some sort of fear paralysis.
    I think scrapping the story was really uncool, even if it was because of a mistake, probably could have been found with a little more effort.
    Also turning the game away from avoiding an increasing horde of enemies, turning it into a game where you hunt just 1 feels like a bit of a turn too drastic this far in development.
    That being said it was really impressive that this resulted in a cohesive game that actually looks pretty cool.

    This was a frustrating video, because it looked so good before noah revamped it. the blackthron prod artstyle is a cool artstyle, but not for every game. It makes the games look very samey. The low-fi previous iteration of the game looked amazing.

      I both agree and disagree .
      Things like the coins, I think thats fair it was removed even though we know what they was intended for the other developer didn't and couldn't think of a use for them which plays into the not communicating. Or things like editing some mechanics or how things work I think is fine.
      But, removing all the current lore and goal of the game annoyed me, even though I liked the idea of a singular enemy, thats alot of work and time gone to waste on something that was already finished. It's more forgiveable in the earlier stages as there's not always clear goals but, not at the end of the project.
      That's just my opinion though.

    I think being able to attack in horror games can really take away from the experience of being truly scared. Of course there are a few exceptions, I don't think this is one of them. There was a lot more tension before there was an enemy to defeat. Kinda just became a dark action game.

      Dev who was working on the story based on the notes here. For my portion, I made the game's story about a character who was told they had very little time left to live and started grappling with their own mortality. The entire location in the game was meant to represent their mind as they battled their inner demons and eventually found peace. I don't mind that it got scrapped, the final game looks fantastic.

    The game was already a game and it just needed polishing , Phibian did a really good job building on the last devs did but not changing them completely to suit there vission.     Normally i dont comment on videos but the two words that stuck with me from this entire video was "My vision" From Noa. _"My_ vision". The whole point of the project was to create something with other people, who, up to that point, did a wonderful job at creating something that i would have loved to play! But then Noa came along, took a look at everything that was made up to that point: The small details (like the character reading the notes), the story, the whole gameplay mechanic with the sanity and vision, and went "Mmmm...no." And tossed it into the bin. He took the entire game (That honestly should have stopped with Phibians development.) and scrapped it to make it into his own thing. Just because it didn't fit with what *he* wanted.
    From what i saw the only things he kept was a few of the game sprites (The pills and batteries) and the sanity mechanics.
    What bothers me the most is that he knew that he was supposed to make a game with _other_ people, he was probably informed that this was the whole point of the video and he probably even agreed to it, but in the end went "Nah, lol."
    In all honesty i wouldn't bring him back if he's just gonna do that. He wasted all of the other developers time the moment he moved all their work to the trash.

      Here's what will bother you even more. This is his channel. He's the one that suggested it to be horror. Most bothersome part is that it was his idea to do these "pass the game" challenges.
      Just to add more, he didn't learn from the giant titan video that Tarodev did basically the same thing.

    I liked the idea of the game and it kept building as the video went on, but then at the very end with Noa everything felt extremally overhauled and meant that all the work put in by previous devs meant nothing. I can understand overhauling a few features, but that was pretty much the entire story and game. The only thing that felt the same was the flashlight and items.

    Here i am again to ask for every dev to give their final thoughts on the final project and telling the others at the end what they added and what they did, also i am sad that we don’t get to hear or see the story and ending one of the devs made
    Fighting something though kinda takes away from horror for me

      Hey-
      Dev who was working on the story based on the notes here. For my portion, I made the game's story about a character who was told they had very little time left to live and started grappling with their own mortality. The entire location in the game was meant to represent their mind as they battled their inner demons and eventually found peace. I don't mind that it got scrapped, the final game looks fantastic.

      Even if it's just an extra hour or two, it would make implementing features way better. Right now, everything has to be done in half to properly work in time
      Also, with more time AIA could carry the team even more lol

      Though this time he did the mistake of removing the cute round mc, and adding [generic pixel human with no emotional connection] (and the walls were way better when they were white) :p
      Also a bit sad the expanding vision mechanic was removed, as it was directly tied to losing sanity quicker, inability to hide by staring at walls, and indirectly powering up the consume ability (though making pills needed to consume enemies that restore sanity each, was interesting).
      The flashlights battery mechanic seems like a miss too, as that means you can turn blind, and thus take no sanity damage from seeing no monsters (though it might be that he forgot to mention changing that mechanic to have a baseline sanity-damage even when nothing is visible, to avoid that).

      @@cloverlovania honestly in my opinion it gave shape to the story and made it more realistic, but even then so, it was the other devs' job to improve on it from a bystander's perspective as they got the game fresh with no knowledge, but at the end the entire lore, aesthetic and gameplay was almost redone instead of improved on, otherwise maybe it would appeal to you.

    That was kind of messed up, what Noa did. I get he didn't mean to necessarily scrap the entire project, he definitely should have gone along with the rest of the dev's ideas. Up until the last dev, which was Noa, I was really excited to play the game, because it felt different, then Noa came along and just scrapped all of Phibian's designs, nearly all of everyone else's, and implemented his generic, not at all scary centipede. Just saying, if you're the last dev, don't reshape the game. I lost a lot of my respect for you, watching that last part. It really showed that you don't care about the other dev's ideas, you didn't even play the game enough to read the story Phibian made, and rather than reshaping the game once you found it, you just deleted his work and made a new story.
    Edit: I like how the channel pokes for on the whole centipede thing later on, so, good job.

    Cool video, but maybe more collaboration and thought should be put into Noa's design choices. Everthing the previous devs worked on was practically gone, he just made an entirely different game. I also wish the visuals/graphics were made by other people sometimes. Don't get me wrong I love Noa's style, but more variety would be good.

    Honestly the product is less of a group of devs making a game and some guy just breaking in and making his own game over some else's work, I'm not the biggest fan of horror games that give you a way to damage the boss stright away because it causes the boss to be less scary due to you have a reliable way of getting rid of it witch relefest tension wich to me is important in good horror.
    Doesn't help that the last Dev took away a intresting setting and also lessed the insanity mechanic of the game for giant bug. (but thats just my op)

    I think the idea of doing two rounds for the same dev would be great!
    Like.. Dev 1 -> Dev 2 -> Dev 3 --> Dev 1 -> Dev 2 -> Dev 3
    This would give another occasion to see how the project evolved when passing through first and get another try for ideas they had or new one!

      Yeah, I don’t think the last Developer should change a huge aspect about the game, because they have no time for polishing and plus their just disregarding the previous developers visions. Maybe the shooting centipede concept would’ve worked if Noa was the 1st or 2nd developer.

    Kinda dislike how the flashlight was added. Gaining more vision as you lose sanity is kinda accurate, as you become more paranoid. It also flips the less vision trope on it's head. I feel like it should've been freshened to fit into some psychological horror more instead of reversing it. My suggestion would have been that the game delves into full horror once your sanity is gone, instead of players thinking it is a health bar they would instead do it out of fear of what happens when they go insane.

    Loved the first 5 devs game. Noa did something I didn’t expect at all. It was truly amazing to see 5 people work on a game for hours and put in an insane amount of work then to see Noa come in and completely destroy the entire game and make a basic boring shooter. Hats off to the first 5 devs. Hats off to Noa for managing to destroy the work of every other dev to fit his narrative.

    kind of would have preferred if the game ended with the second to last dev. Moving the light out of the flashlight and giving him a crossbow just felt wrong and a bit lazy. Didnt feel like a horror game anymore, just kind of creepy i guess?

    i was excited you were going to be at the end cause i really thought by then the art and story would be fleshed out and we’d see something new but once again we got your style that we’ve seen a million times before. it’s cool and all but seriously the other devs had something going and you scrapped the whole thing. it’s just frustrating as a viewer and felt like a waste of time.
