I think it was Hakita (the creator of Ultrakill) who explained why small indie studios make so much better games than multimillion companies: "We don't do drug screening."
Does it depend on PC hardware? Like, I have RoR2 and I have played it quite a bit but, I haven't played since a little before the new expo came out but, I have an RTX3080 and I want to see if it will still crash with that GPU lmao
I'm very excited to see what Hopoo does next as their game design philosophies are (clearly) excellent. it'll be awesome to see how they translate them into a larger project than RoR2
I think one of the most underrated things about this game that makes it so satisfying is that the items you get visually stack on your character. By the end you are just COVERED in cool ass baubles like when you have 100 different passive buff charms cast in an mmo.
As a game dev student, I'll tell you this: Most AAA companies make a product, something to market and be sold. A "game" in the most surface level way possible, with all the aspects a "game" should have. Indie games are not made by the sales or the marketing people. They're made by the artists, looking to not just create a game, but an experience worth playing. Artists want to make, well, art. And indie games are what you get when artists have the final say.
I'd also go to say that, with AAA, if the game fails its really not a huge loss to the company. They can take the hit. Now with Indie devs, a lot of them cannot afford for their game to fail from stupid bugs or scuffed launches. The game either runs and plays well with minimal bugs, or the company can just die off. Its not easy making a game, especially if that company has 1-10 people. That coupled with their pure passion to make not only a game, but a work of art makes the perfect storm of a game that is not only fun, but a memorable experience.
indie successes tend to have a good amount of money behind them already (nothing big, so called “petty bourg” level typically, just not wage slave paycheck to paycheck) and are playing on that scale, so they can afford to put a long time of really trihard work into it. AAA typically ends up majority shareholdered by some wrinkly boomer billionaire who sees the profit numbers and says, for all intents and purposes, “number must get bigger!!!!” hence the gap in marketing and product quality.
not totally accurate but yes, AAA and to some extent AA games put a lot of money to make their game (up to 500M and 50M respectively) so the sales strategy is to minimise the risk and do a clean game, even if it means making a game too similar to its predecessor. Indie and Triple I have way less a maximum budget (5M and 10M) respectively, and that's why they can take risks, because for publishers, it is less of a loss if the game sells badly. The problem is the correlation between the risk you are allowing yourself to take, the team you put behind it, and the budget you allow the development of the game to have.
@@raiskader3560 You probably know more than I do on the subject. I'm just making a conclusion from what I know and see. It does make sense when phrased that way though.
@@Walsh-ts1so So, let me understand this: Gearbox tried to change the game, but messed it up. So people were angry (hence your comment) but in the month or so that has passed since the issues have been fixed again and the game is more or less fine again, is that right?
Reaching stage 5 blew me away in this game. Sure every stage slaps in its own right but holy shit that stage goes way too hard. Soundtrack and visuals fit so perfectly. Just the perfect stage
I just gave this game a try after playing the new God of War Ragnarök Valhalla DLC. I made it to "I see you" my first run. 42 mins of pure fun. I'm in love with this game
The game is great. If you have played the first, or like 2D platformers with a style similar to the second, try risk of rain returns. It’s an entire overhaul of the first game with new art, music, items, characters, enemies, stages, everything. It’s amazing, and I got it on release day. It had no game breaking bugs that I found, and I love it.
Risk of Rain 2 was one of those games that I kept looking at and passing it up for a while, until some friends pushed me really hard to try it. It’s absolutely a blast and a half, especially with mods and friends. Gotta be one of my absolute favorite games of all time right alongside V Rising and Gunfire Reborn currently.
I don't play many games, but we seem to have similar taste. I have 1000+ hours into ROR2. I just got Gunfire Reborn. I have 100 hours or so into it. Both are very run! I'm going to check out V Rising based on your comment. :)
I'd love to have friends that play the same things as I do, my friends they all just play fifa and Fortnite while there's a world of amazing video games! Hoping to meet some at high-school, I don't even know if I'll have time to play but at this point I'll do anything
The way to fix that is to play a wide range of games. I've gotten pretty good at recognizing how much I'd like a game by watching some of the game play, as I've gotten a lot of things to compare it against. They're never 1 to 1 comparisons... but as learn how elements work together, you can get idea of how a game flows by watching what it does. Even differences in UI design for the exact same game can have a world of difference in how it feels to play.
I am surprised you never mentioned another thing that makes this game incredible to replay, and that is the multiplayer. It's not some separate mode or anything but just the exact same gameplay loop you enjoy in single player but with up to 3 friends, and the difficulty automatically scales with the amount of players. Playing this on it's own already addictive game loop really gets only better with friends.
Its not even just 4 player! Theres a couple commands you can run to get any number of players though the max ive tried is 8 player. Things do start acting weird though, like 2 chests spawning in 1 spot.
i was still on the first few minutes of the vid when i read this comment, and briefly thought this was a top-tier shitpost of a comment trying to convince me that Gollum was actually an addicting game that's even better with friends
Friends make every game better for instance i honestly hate modern shooters they are just overly competitive, i don't wanna spend my free time getting yelled at by a 16 year old who doesn't work and can justify spending 12 hours plus playing all day even casual is just a sweatfeast but with friends it's manageable and can fuck about which is what games are about actually having fun
2:11 I'd strongly recommend Ender Lilies when it comes to Metroidvania releases; the music, the art style, and the premise itself all work so well together!
Yeah ender Lillies is beautiful in it's design and Mili's music never disappoints regardless of the game. It's also not overly long and i could 100% it in 16 hours. It's not overly cheap for the play time but especially on a sale (Like right now) it is worth it 100%.
I think the reason that I keep coming back to Risk of Rain 2 is because I don't have a reason to stop. You've beat the game once? Ok, do it with a different survivor or artifacts or difficulty or gamemode or strategy or maybe go for a completely different ending entirely, not to mention getting every achievement and logbook entry. You get so much polished content that feels actually rewarding to get through because instead of being some arbitrary quest list where the only reward is getting it done, the reward is trying and failing and eventually succeeding to complete the task in the first place. Most of the really strange parts of game are also tucked away and don't affect your run if you ignore them, like the Lunar items or the other endings. You don't need to get every ending as every character with the hardest modifiers, there's no reward for doing it, but the action of doing is and the options given by the game feel like a reward itself for going out of you way to get skilled enough to even try. Good game, I will continue to be addicted for the rest of my life.
It makes me happy to see Risk of Rain explode in popularity. I bought 10 copies of the original because I enjoyed it and I wanted all my friends to enjoy it too. It was a great hidden gem on Steam. Then, they announced ROR2. By that time, my friends and I had played over 300 hours of the first, gotten all the achievements and discovered every secret. We talked about 2 non-stop for the next couple years until we finally got to buy it. Now, we are back to where we were with Risk of Rain 1, save a couple of the hardest achievements and unlocks. It's a great game, and it sadly had a delayed payout for Hopoo Studios. Despite that, they poured their passion into this game, and people are starting to take notice. Now, this isn't my favorite game of all time, but it's one that you can bring up with your friends on a day where you are bored of everything else, and almost always get a group together to play. It's not a crazy unique game, or that unique of a story even. But what it is, is stupid fun. "just a couple rounds" turns into a 5 hour session that nearly crashes your computer with the number of enemies and bodies on the screen, and before you know it, it's 4 AM and you have work in 4 hours. It's games like these that keep me interested in gaming at all.
AYO. I want to branch out and do this type of content for the future even though it took me forever to concoct this abomination i thoroughly enjoyed making it. i'll keep yall updated. thank you everyone for the support :)
I'm just trying to comprehend why exactly you have 2.6 k subs when the right number would be more like 300 k ? I mean the quality of this vid is better then most ytubers at 1 mil.
risk of rain is a life changer, the musics are awesome, probably one of the hardest and coolest games i've ever played this game is just awesome and i love how it gets more attention now because its a game that definitely deserves it

Chris Christodoulou - The Rain Formerly Known as Purple My #1 favorite song, of all time, up to this point. Risk of Rain, the series, is pure passion, not only within every aspect of the game, but they frequently do dev logs where they talk about the game and updates and fun stuff :3 Great community
I like Chris Christodoulou - Chanson d'Automne from the first game a lot I looked up yours.. some of the background of that song sounds like it has the one I like in it. Interesting.
@@Gandhi_Physique Yeah the Rain Formerly Known as Purple is basically a sequel/successor to Chanson d'Automne since they both play on their game's version of the 'Sky Meadow' stage
I know you said you weren’t interested in Inscryption, but I would HIGHLY recommend it. Kaycee’s Mod, the mode you unlock after beating the game, turns the game into a fully-fledged deck builder roguelike. It’s super fun. I still go back to it from time to time.
Honestly good stuff. Been playing RoR2 since its early access days and it never occurred to me how polished it was, even back then. No Bethesda-level bugs or crashes, if the game did fail at some point it was because I was intentionally breaking it somehow. Then again, I guess that's what true polish is - something so seamless you don't notice the effort that makes it so, unless you're really looking for it or have experienced so much worse in the same areas. Great video dude, keep it up!
I'd also recommend Brutal Orchestra. It's a roguelike but luck doesn't matter nearly as much as strategy so it doesn't feel as frustrating to lose. Highly recommend
very true, i really enjoyed that game although i wish it had some more content. the gameplay is clearly so polished and well studied its great and never too easy or too difficult. you always have to use your brain, and even if you have bad luck, as long as you stay focused you can just keep going. for enemies and bosses i like to look at the timeline and use my fingers to cover whatever slots they might/will attack. in case the timeline says the enemy will move, i move my finger as well, and sometimes i accompany with fitting uh, sounds. trigger fingers feels like moving left or right and then oneshotting you? i move my finger left or right and then make a "pew" sound on my fool that will most likely get killed at the end of the turn. i admit that it sounds kind of cringe to do, but honestly i wouldnt do this if the game itself didnt encourage it in one way or the other. its just a way for me to have even more fun. i dont do that with other turn based games.
@@zeaxanthinepoxidase As for the lack of content, the creator said that she plans to release s future Lore Update, which would include things such as character interactions, more useless NPCs and maybe a couple more quests. And about the fingers thing, it's not cringe at all really. It seems a lot of people who play the game also use that method. I use it specially for bosses like the Charcarrion, I move my fingers and then say "Pow" where he is going to attack
I will say, rogue-likes similar to ETG and Hades are really good games and personally I like them a lot, but I will say RoR2 is so special and so is Hopoo Games. But DAMN Chris really knocked it out of the park with the soundtrack. The fact that the studio actually agreed on making the game 3D and they even made great DLC for it too! Awesome community and studio, and I hope to see more greatness amasses of it.
Someone should also tell him RoR2 is a ROGUELITE, not a roguelike like dude said 1 million times in the video. There's a difference, quite a big one...
You convinced me. I got it and a friend of mine did as well. We’ve been looking and trying to find a new game for literal YEARS and I think this is the one. We easily put a couple hours in the first day we got it. It seems to have a good amount of progression and a ton of variety in each game. Thank you!
For everyone playing for the first time, just enjoy the last stage song "con lentitud poderosa...", it's a masterpiece, I've been playing this game since launch and I've lost count of how many times I've heard this song and in very different situations, in the shower, eating, playing, at the gym, meditating and many other situations.
The comment about the more you play, the more relaxing and easy it gets is true for Hades too. Once mastered and in a flow state i could finish it every time with any weapon to get all the ending dialogue
Risk of Rain 1 and 2 have been part of my life since the first game dropped when I was still an adolescent. Now in my adulthood I make art/character designs for a lot of the mods for this game! As a busy student having a game where I can pump out 30 minute runs in brief windows of free time is great. Super excited for RoRR.
I remember playing RoR2 for the first time when it first released on console and legit was part of the reason I got a gaming PC, the game is one of the best pieces of entertainment I've had in years and just watching this makes me want to plunge more hours into it, a true masterpiece
All I will say about this game, is that it's genuinely the only game I would come back to and have a good time in. If I could I'd sink big money into this game. No matter what whether I'm alone or with friends, it never ceases to amaze me how fun the game continues to be. With the added bonus of its "progression" being a logbook of every single piece of progress you've gotten as a whole.
I don’t normally subscribe to UA-cam channels after one video but I’m making an exception. The polish and quality of this video is amazing. I especially appreciated the humor, how it was present but not in your face. Very excited to see more

The first time I heard the opening riff to the mithrix fight, I knew I was screwed. Also this game, by definition, is insanity and I love every second of it
Dude, I love this video. I may be a bit biased as I have bought the game almost 8 times and have over 300 hours on it, but I really like all the points you made about the game. Everything from the art direction, sound design, and even the feeling of the game itself is somthing I havn't been able to find in any other games, and this game addicts me. Other games need to look at Risk of Rain and take notes. Also this video is really cozy, keep it up.
Can we talk for a bit about the 13:28 segment? The music (who's the reason I bought the game in the first place) just makes that segment so good, like a timelapse about determination and hope. I love it
A genuine treasure. So weird that this game is definitely well known, but seems easily forgettable. I still play every now & then thanks to the endless mods that are constantly being put out & updated. I’m looking forward to Risk of Rain returns, & anything else hopoo makes going forward.
I know many people are saying this but this video was great and I'm happy giving you one of the many many many more subscribers you deserve. Also RISK OF RAIN 2 BABY LETS GO!
Welcome to the club! Roguelites are always about the adventure, not the loot and trinkets you keep at the end. Play to *play*. Not to just fill out progress bars, reach a credits roll, fill out a map, scratch off side mission checklists, nor stuff your inventory with items just because. Release mere progression. Embrace play.
thats why i love risk of rain both 1 and 2, coz while theres the standard roguelike fun where you just play, theres also so much to unlock and unique ways to do it, so even if i dont beat the run it gives me something in each run to do which makes it significantly more enjoyable for me
10:38 I'm going to be honest. This point was proven SO HARD after the Seekers of the Storm dlc update. It showed exactly what you're saying here in beautiful clarity.

Not quite. The attack actually hit twice in just a handful of frames so it looks like a one-shot. You can see the two hit markers in purple numbers that indicate player damage as well as if you go frame by frame.
Shields do not directly affect osp. The issue with shields is they need 9 seconds to regen fully, and if you have 2+ then you can't get osp until your shields recharge, which may take longer than your health naturally regenerating.
@@DrLemon1 Weird, I swear I saw some popular youtuber saying shield affects osp. Thanks for the comment. Now I checked it, and it turns out shield is not affecting osp. :/
You told the musics and the stages go very well together. That’s because on some stages developer team kept the OST in mind. For example in the last stage (the moon) the soundtrack for that map was already made so they built the map around that music. They really got the ambiance right
They also completely redesigned the whole moon stage because the original version was probably the worst level design in a roguelite I have ever seen. If you didn't build movement speed there was a shoehorned in several minutes of walking with nothing to do. I dropped the game entirely until they fixed that abomination.
Risk of Rain 2 might be my favorite game of all time. It strikes a perfect balance between making you feel like a god who could be one-shot at any time.
Dam it gearbox, I didn’t think too much about you but now I’m having to read steam discussions about how you broke something that worked PERFECTLY fine
This is the first of your videos that I have seen, watching it I just assumed you were super big on yt- so when I finished it and saw the vid only had like 140 views, I was very surprised! This is so well made! I’d love to watch more like this. I agree ror2 is amazing, your clips made me laugh. Good job (pls continue content creation). Also you should DEFINITELY play outer-wilds, it’s my favorite game of all time, no comment can describe just how good it is. Please don’t look up too much about it though (besides reading the description on steam) because your progression is heavily affected by spoilers. Ask anyone who has played it- it is amazing.
Surprised how you didn't mention how crash resistant this game is. I have played in for a little over 600 hours on the *Nintendo Switch* and I got the game to crash 3 times on me in that entire time. It is insanely optimized against crashing
Honestly it's surprising how much you have to do to crash the game. I've also found that some people who lag or crash more often can remove most of that by simply turning off the money and exp effects. The difference in lag is astounding.
@@raven75257Seriously I don't think they have even ever made a good game or even a single good line of dialogue The only hope for this game is them leaving it alone before they add some shit like a claptrap companion that doesn't shut up
The fact you referenced Grant Cardone with the pushy studios got a huge laugh out of me! Keep making great stuff this all has value and has helped me expand my thoughts about these games.
You made me buy risk of rain 2 along with the dlc, it’s now my favorite game and i want to thank you so much for convincing me to buy this. you did such a good job that i saw this video and bought it straight away, no other videos, yours did the trick :)

I remember playing the original risk of rain back in 2013 and wondering why it wasnt so much more popular than it was. Its such a simple game concept with such a masterful execution. Im so happy that this originally small team at Hopoo have found so much success off this series, they deserve all of it and more.
This game may not be allowed to be put on a pedestal because "Oh shitty small indie game no!", but I genuinely think it's one of my most favorite games ever. I would personally go as far as to give it a 10/10; it may not be for everyone, but it's one of my comfort games that I hold near and dear to my heart. And I want more people to play it.
I highly recommend Dead Cells. It's another indie roguelite, having meta-progression where you're always getting closer to a goal, even if your runs don't turn out well. The gameplay is very skill based as opposed to luck. Just about any weapon and item will get the job done, and designing a build through your run is very satisfying. Finally, the runs aren't too long or grueling. Maybe 30 mins to an hour on a successful run, beating the final boss. I never feel like I'm lingering in the same place too long and there are many unique, interesting locations and routes to spice up your runs, offering different challenges and rewards. Plus, there is plenty of variety and "end-game" content to justify spending a hefty amount of time with the game.
This is why we need a remaster of gauntlet dark legacy. It gives you the lore and replayability you love in risk of rain while still being a roguelike game. It was my favorite PS2 game and would be a huge success if it was brought into steam.
its so funny since the last 4 years, there is atleast 1 vid per months of a dude who discover risk of rain 2 and say that it's a masterpiece, and yes, it is, you should play this game guys :)
As someone who doesn’t like roguelikes but somehow ends up playing so many of them, I’m very skeptical but I think I’m gonna cave and try Risk of Rain 2 too lol The Binding of Isaac is the exception to me not liking roguelikes mainly because it wants you to break it and after hearing you say this game does that too I have to finally check it out
Sorry to break it too you but this game doesn't really want you to break it at all. It has some of the most boring and restrictive passive items I've seen in a roguelike and he overhypes this game greatly.
@@DeciDeci_ +1 to that, I gave it a chance and after 11 hours of gameplay (with dlc) I had 2 runs where I could get multiple of the same item that actually did anything when stacked, both were common items and one made me regenerate health when not moving and second one was increasing my movement speed, nothing "gamebreaking", useful or at least fun. Also to get the items you have to farm enemies to get gold to open chests. And for the items with higher rarity - in most runs I don't even see them. Oh yeah and level design is as bland as it could be, you move around copy-pasted terrain, finding the teleporter to next level can easily take up to 15 minutes of running in circles because everything looks the same.
@@Beshar_this is just false information for the sake of bashing the game every item stacks its buffs in some way. They all might not be noticeable, but none of them do _nothing_ when stacked And if you don’t know what an item exactly does, thats what the item logs are for in the menu
@@DeciDeci_ risk of rain 2 is the only game that where consistently I was able to play the mini game of "how long can I go before this crashes". The item stacking get patently absurd. I've had games where for minutes on end I couldnt see what was happening on my screen because of how much clutter there was, and if I touched the keyboard I'd go flying off the map because of how much movement I've stacked. Saying the passives of items are bland is kinda revealing cause it misses the point of how the items work.
I come back to this video every couple months to remind me how amazing people are, the fact that some group of people like me made this is super inspiring. I genuinely can’t wait for the dlc I haven’t been this excited to game in a long time.

This aged like fine wine

Yeah ender Lillies is beautiful in it's design and Mili's music never disappoints regardless of the game. It's also not overly long and i could 100% it in 16 hours.

Gosh you're right now risk of rain truly is a triple A game

Honestly good stuff. Been playing RoR2 since its early access days and it never occurred to me how polished it was, even back then. No Bethesda-level bugs or crashes, if the game did fail at some point it was because I was intentionally breaking it somehow. very true, i really enjoyed that game although i wish it had some more content. the gameplay is clearly so polished and well studied its great and never too easy or too difficult. you always have to use your brain, and even if you have bad luck, as long as you stay focused you can just keep going.
for enemies and bosses i like to look at the timeline and use my fingers to cover whatever slots they might/will attack. in case the timeline says the enemy will move, i move my finger as well, and sometimes i accompany with fitting uh, sounds. trigger fingers feels like moving left or right and then oneshotting you? i move my finger left or right and then make a "pew" sound on my fool that will most likely get killed at the end of the turn.
i admit that it sounds kind of cringe to do, but honestly i wouldnt do this if the game itself didnt encourage it in one way or the other. its just a way for me to have even more fun. i dont do that with other turn based games.

You told the musics and the stages go very well together. That’s because on some stages developer team kept the OST in mind. For example in the last stage (the moon) the soundtrack for that map was already made so they built the map around that music. They really got the ambiance right
They also completely redesigned the whole moon stage because the original version was probably the worst level design in a roguelite I have ever seen. most fun i’ve had playing a game

@@Beshar_this is just false information for the sake of bashing the game
every item stacks its buffs in some way. They all might not be noticeable, but none of them do _nothing_ when stacked
