DD15 major overhaul, how to setup the gear train timing and what tools you will need

- Make sure you have enough experience or have someone with enough experience to help you with this process. It can be very easy to make a mistake which can lead to catastrophic engine failure.
Quick overview on how to setup the gear train timing on your DD15 and what tools you need. It is very important that you have these tools, the first tool is the crankshaft TDC locating tool.
PART Number J-48630
This will help you secure the crankshaft in the TDC position, then you can start to setup the Number 3 idler gear but you MUST have the Cantilever Tool.
PART Number J-47487
The Cantilever tool allows you to set the correct lash or clearance between the Number 3 idler gear and the Number 2 idler gear.
I hope this helps illustrate what it looks like before you and after.
I rebuilt my first 3 this year no alignment tools at all on an inframe. One is a semi and the other two dd15s are dump trucks. Guy was pleased and it was really more simple then any other engine I've rebuilt other than cat

You only have to adjust/remove gear drive on total overhaul? I worked in Freightliner dealers and don’t remember seeing rear cover removed on overhaul
For an overhaul yes, I tear it completely down, have the block checked and line bored then we build it all back up.. For an inframe you dont have to.
Do you rebuild alot of dd15 or do crate engine swaps?
Rebuild all of my DD15 engines
Crate engines are not too common for me. The cost for one thing and the warranty only applies if you don’t have a delete to the emissions system. Detroit will automatically void the warranty if your truck is deleted. So if a truck comes in asking for a rebuild we have to consider that when we do the work.

Rear cover gasket for the timing gears. Don’t remember the name exactly. But if you tell them it’s for the timing gears or gear train they should know.

Yo siempre lo hecho andar. No lo acelero, revisó presión de aceite, que no tire diésel, agua o aceite.
Después deja el motor corriendo un rato, que sube la temperatura. Mantener la revolución arribar de 1000 por 1 una hora y después lleva lo a darle vuelta.

I dropped a 5mm allen wrench into the gear train while removing the injector wiring harness. I'm watching this video to see maybe where it ended up so I can fish it out on monday. From this vid, it looks like there's enough space behind the gears that it dropped straight down into the pan. What do you think?
That is hard to say. If you are lucky it is in the pan, if not the back cover will need to come off.

After i tight gear 1 the tool get stuck ? Its the play bad or i need to adjust the lash again i try to follow the instructions but they dont say anything at all
The tool should be able to slide on and off fairly easy. Little resistance.

Yes, definitely put the fuel pump to time. This way the engine is all times together. Crank, CAM and fuel pump.

How do u know if u got a DD13 engine or an DD15 engine thanks ?
The EGR cooler is probably the easiest way to tell the difference, the EGR cooler for the DD13 is much larger than the DD15.
Why would they move the gear train to the back?
It may have to do with vibration, torque, power distribution. I don’t know the benefits of front versus rear.

Series 60 (12.7L and 14L) do have a bull gear. DD15 DD13 and DD16 does not have a bull gear.
Not familiar with ISX, I think the Volvo D13 does have a bull gear.
Thanks. I did check online. But all that came up was the Cummins ISX, Mack mp8 and d13, the maxxforce international, the paccar mx13, kenworth t600, t800. All have them. Thank you

Hy , Saludos de Ucraine. may be you could help us, it concerns timing/adjusting of fuel pump to camshafts. We have such problem, "broken" engine DD13 with PTO driving, here are 5 idle gears. Our client had bought another used DD13 , without PTO drive, it means only 4 idle gears. We have put this additional idle gear for PTO, from "broken" engine to "new bought", also we have taken /changed a crankshaft gear ( from broken to new bought) , that it could drive PTO gear. We have also taken a fuel pump of high pressure and injectors from "broken" to " new bought", the reason was electric cables, we have not changed camshafts, other idle gears from "broken" to "new bought" engine, we have studied und we know info about timing of fuel pmp, about camshafts adjusting and timing, the proble is , that there are fuel pressure in rail, a fuel pump is creating enough pressure of fuel, but ist not going, is not cranking,what is the reason ? Thanks
What year engine is the new DD engine?

@@CarlosDieselElectric Many thanks for your response , the "broken engine " I suppose was year 2012/2013, the " new bought "engine is more younger, I suppose 2013/2014, these both engines are from MB Actros Euro 6, I can see difference between these engines in MB Programm EPC Flexible, there is difference in fuel pump,injectors and camshafts
@@vitalijdanajkanich308 I would start from the very beginning. Timing gears, set the crankshaft to TDC1 then install all your gears. Make sure the lash is correct on the top gear. The fuel pump must also be timed properly before being installed. Once you have done this, adjust valves and rotate the engine several times to make sure the engine does not get stuck.
Are you able to crank the engine but it won’t start?
@@CarlosDieselElectric We will do so, as you say, from beginning, we must disconnect gearbox, clutch and try it. I can so discribe you, we try to crank the engine,we feed with the hand pump, than fuel pump of high pressure full the rail, there is pressure, but it does not work, only maybe 1 second, as we help with start fluid , We have experince with these engines DD13 , but in this case we doubt ,because we had to install additional PTO gear , an we have changed fuel pump and injectors from old engine, may be it caused some troubles for "new bought engine"
Have now from this mechanic new information, too low fuel pressure in rail, only 300 bar
How much does this job cost?
A complete overhaul you are looking at $6500-7500 for labor.
Parts depend on the year of the engine and unfortunately prices are increasing
@CarlosDieselElectric 2015 cascadia i think i have a bent toner wheel or 1 of the lower gears in ur video but im not ruling out wiring harness i replaced cam pos sensor 4 times and new cylinder head i get a code for cam and craank sensors speed not matching and sometimes my dash says timing problem detected shutting down and it goes away in like 7 seconds and tyeres a grinding sound for 2 or 3 seconds.dd15
@@GenXFarmer77 you have two sensors for timing. Flywheel and CAM.
For a gear to be bad or go bad is difficult. Remove the valve cover and inspect the timing gear or plate
