Amazing series, thanks for sharing Charlie! Last time I went for a ride with my best friend and after being away from riding for a while (years 😁), in 1 of our stops, I forgot to put down the side stand, you can imagine what happened 😁. At lest the muscle memory came back very quickly for the remaining of our tour. 😉👍👍

Morning Charlie, it was good to watch this series covering your trip. The Picos are really close to my heart as I climbed there during the '90s. I hope you now have the 'Picos Bug', as now that you know the lay of the land, you'll be able to expand your next trip - Covadonga Lakes (catching the sunrise from there is fantastic), and Tresviso (beyond Sotres)
My annual October trip can't come soon enough! Cheers anyway. 😎

Jay's guess is correct! Those huts on stilts are "hórreos", and they have been used since medieval times for storing grain away from the humidity of the ground, as it can quite damp in northern Spain.
Good on you for including the footage of you giving Jay a little "pat on the back" by the way. That type of accident is incredibly common at intersections and roundabouts. You turn your head to check for oncoming traffic just in time to miss the moment the vehicle in front of you stops and bam! It's a good reminder to everyone watching.
Something to consider is to bring with you some replacement levers when you go touring, as if you are unlucky and have a drop it's pretty common to snap off the lever and if you are in the middle of nowhere it can become quite a problem. You can just get some cheap ones that will do the job until you get back and then replace them with proper ones.
    Great video as always!

You are right. You're human, and it happens! Luckily, no one was hurt! ... well, except your ego... lol And the boys seemed to have fun reminding your ego of its little mishap! 😅
I'm scared of heights, too. Just seeing you in the cable car gave me this weird feeling you get. Lol But it was worth it, what view! Just before you showed your sticker, I thought to myself, "She should put her sticker!!!" 😆
    What a beautiful trip!

The raised small structures are called hórreos. Quite common here in Asturias, and yes, they are grain storage. The steps are measured so rats cannot climb them! I love the cat walk! O'h,and I also like the format of chatting on the intercom as you ride! Thanks for these videos! xxx

When I went up on the cable car at Funte De I walked back down to the bottom bottom station. I’d bought a book of walks in the Picos and it was fairly straightforward and took me via Espinama. It is of course uphill from there on. After I had got back to my bike I rode through the mountains from Espinama to Sotres.
The Picos area is lovely and I can see why it’s popular with the British being so handy for the ferry ports. I delayed my visit because the weather forecast for the time I had planned to go was awful. I looked at the weather a couple of hundred km further south and it was great so I went there first then onto northern Portugal. I called by and stayed in Potes for a few days on my way back as the forecasts were better. In my whole trip from the Pyrenees through central northern Spain and to the edge of the Picos national park I saw no British registered vehicles but in the national park they seemed to account for one in every two vehicles I saw, mainly bikes. I have another trip to northern Spain planned but I won’t be returning to the Picos, the lovely empty roads and historical sites I discovered further south are calling me back.

    • @restdayrider
      @restdayrider  6 місяців тому

I shall have to venture further south when I'm able.

There is a fabulous walk if you go from the cable car station at the bottom up into the woods past an idyllic campsite right around the hills and climb up onto an alpine plateau with spectacular views all around 360. The route then takes you down adjacent to the cliff face up which the cable car goes. You see a little of the zigzag path in this footage. The views are breath taking.
Yes the Picos have become a honey pot being too popular now especially with Brit bikers tearing up the roads. Other adjacent areas of Spain have even more empty roads and lots of great places to see.

Yup, happens, all in the fun. N. Spain is my favourite area to ride taking in the Picos and all around the Pyrenees there are so many great roads. Even the motorway from Bilbao to the French Border is an amazing road with its tunnels and viaducts (EU funded hence the tolls). It is avoidable but ride it at least once. Hopefully back next year with a few more roads and places to visit thanks to you 👍. I even recognise the ferry 🤣

Battle scars nothing to see here...............well done Jay took the hit like a champ. We have all been there in that 'oh shit' moment, it happened to me on my mod 2 test day my riding buddy just decided to stop and I only just managed to stop. Just glad you where both ok and the bikes where rideable afterwards. Thanks for posting warts and all, ride safe.
    Edit
I got chatting to a rider in Ypres who had just come back from that festival, he had ridden all the way back in one go on his Gen 1 V-Strom 650.

Down at Goodwood i was coming out on to the road after ' anything but 4 ' meeting , we were being seen out by stewards two at a time , guy in front big chopper decides to stop half way out , me on my T3 California try to avoid him but bounced of his huge big back tyre whilst leaning to the right to try and avoid it , Bad enough in a small group , but when you have loads of people taking photos out on the grass verges! adrenaline is a wonderful thing sometimes specially when it comes to picking a bike back up

I rear ended my mate at a roundabout. Very embarrassing, a broken lever each, that was it. We were both on Honda CB200's so switched levers about to go get spares. Mind you, that was 44 years ago.... now I feel old

Nearly did the same in Italy two weeks ago at a roundabout, …my friends just ahead had the clear and took off, then me being so mindful of the traffic on the roundabout coming from the left , I got the all clear too But not minding what was happening ahead, a bus had pulled across in front my friends causing them to brake hard in front of me …I nearly rear ended one of them …a lucky escape….can happen to anyone ..

Oh thank god i'm not the only one rear-ending the guy in front... that happened to me in my early days of riding (still saying sorry to Mike), I thought he was going, so I looked to see if all was clear for me, rolling forward but he deceided not to go... *"°PANG"*° !! And now you know why I travel with a spare Brake and Clutch lever at the bottom of my panniers..., you never know, and they take up no room. If the Break side snaps off, riding ifor help s still poss. but when the Clutch snaps off, end of story..., then the help has to come to you!
I've never placed myself directly behind another bike since. What were you doing in 2nd place anyway, I thought you were supposed to be leading the pack?

100% your fault Charlie, BUT if like you say there was a clear view that no traffic was coming then why did he stop, and why did he stop so far behind the painted lines?. by the way the cable car was £14 return did you enquire re the cost of a single lol ? the houses on stilts are built that way because the area is very green and rainy which attracts rats
