Great tutorial. Being self taught in Maya, my weakness has always been lighting and UV mapping. It's awesome to finally find someone who can explain things in a way I get. Look forward to going through all of your tutorials. Thank you so much for doing this!
My brain explodes when you said Arnold doesn't render Maya lights but then you render directional light with Arnold. Actually, I am following the same steps you are doing and I can't even render an ambient light using Maya Software...
You make everything seem so easy, bless your heart, Monica, really appreciate your hard work and great presentation and all your explanations are so wonderful, to the point, no messing about and you manage to get the message accross very well. For ever grateful and hope you continue sharing your vast knowledge and experience :) stay beautiful :)
Thank you so much for this. I've been struggling with trying to piece together information from googling forums or rambling hour long videos but you explain everything in such a direct, clear and concise way. A million thanks to you for making this so straightforward and providing this wonderful resource.
i am really confused about the values in turbulence, swirl and velocity. Just an explanation about their scale will be enough. For example: Should i enter the turbulence value as 100 or 500? or 0 to 1 is enough? It never mentions the unit we're putting our values in... I hope you'll look into it! I'd really appreciate it!
There are several sites like cgtrader, turbosquid, so on. You can find 3d models there for free. You can also go to my page and download free models. www.academicphoenixplus.com/ I hope that helps! :)
Hey Detective Monica I have some Intel for you. I just arrived from a mike Hermes Video who has twice the subs (Share video with your friends, who has friends after hours of 3d work?) He, Mike, presents his videos as though he doesnt need to quickly wrap up and head out, I mean its just the vibe i got off this video. Also just like you can rip tabs off menus you can wedge them in between windows I am sure you know that. You seem to do a lot of Maya tutorials you should find a more permanent set up for them meaning something you wont have to move windows around and dig up lights and meshes from behind other windows. I learnt quite a bit though so thanks. I am trying to use a mesh light as the sun and have the moon cast a shadow on the earth but the shadows are tricky.
Hi Sherif, thank you for your comment. What type of results do you get when the directional light is active? no shadows but light? Or just darkness.... If shadows are missing, create a new light and see if that works. If not, then make sure you are rendering using Arnold. It could also be your shaders/textures. Apply all lambert to all of your objects and see if the shadows pop up. I hope that helps!
HI Monica, thank you for your reply :). I'm getting shadows with directional light, but not with some arnold light. I'm using Arnold Renderer. You mentioned applying lambert, you mean the shader?. I havent used it in a week, i'm getting back to it now, will keep you posted if i find something else.
Hi! I'm not getting shadows for the desk. I tried visiting the autodesk website and tried changing the options the forum suggested but no luck. Do you have any ideas? Edit: Never mind, I got it!
I think the biggest thing is to make sure you are in Arnold Renderer using Arnold lights. That way it will render its own light system. I hope that helps!
Went to your site, to download the model, sent you 2 dollars through paypal, the model page for downloading has no download button, but the message on the model page says get download here and links right back to your main models page. ???
Hi Stephen, I'm so sorry to hear you are having issues! It is through Gumroad, so once you type in $0 for the amount, the "I want this" button should be active. It will take you to another page to write your e-mail and then you can download it from there. Please send me an e-mail if you are having issues and I'll send you a direct link to the model!! I'm sorry for the inconvenience! And thank you for the support.
Why did you give link?? I can't download the model. It redirects me from one link to another and finally come to the first link again. I tried lot of times, but every time it does the same. I guess, models are not free to download. Please don't misguide when you are not allowing to download it for free. Kindly say that you can purchase the model from bla bla link.
HI Ameiya, I'm sorry you are having issues downloading the object. The link in the description will take you to my downloads page. If you scroll down, you'll see the desk that will direct you to gumroad. I checked and it seems to be working, but just in case, here is the direct link: gumroad.com/l/ModernDesk I hope that helps. Also, if you want to model/uvmap and texture the desk, you can follow my tutorials series here: ua-cam.com/video/JmCYfEwyku8/v-deo.html

Can we need to add environment light (HDR image) after adding light or not???????.
Hi rK, You can add an HDR image to a light dome or even an area light as a file. I hope that answers your question!
