How to Replace a Heater Core Bypass Valve and Thermostat in Your Vehicle

  • Today I worked on my '95 Ford Ranger with a 3.0L. I replaced the heater core bypass valve because it was leaking coolant. I also replaced the radiator cap because it appears to not be working. The thermostat was also replaced because the vehicle overheated and it was now stuck in the open position. One of the bolts holding down the thermostat housing broke during the replacement. I also explain how I went about resolving this issue. The same basic steps apply to other makes and models as well.

I have a 1990 ranger with the 4.0 v6, I bypassed the heater core and now my temp gauge doesn't read at all. Do I need a bypass valve? Or how do I fix this issue?

Bro the overflow does NOT suck coolant back in . It’s ONLY an overflow

The thermostat is the same like your old truck.

I can't believe I just saw this comment. YT doesn't do too well on keeping me updated. Anyways, yes.. it's basically the same as the '92 I used to have.

It was. Reminded me of that one meme "When you give that bolt one more righty-tighty and it becomes a lefty loosey"...

Isn't that a heater control valve? At least that's what I have on my 97 ranger

I purchased it as a "heater core bypass valve", but I'm sure it could go by many names. It's just a vacuum operated valve that bypasses the heater core when not in use.
You might want to install one to improve A/C cooling (by removing heat from coolant inside the cab). You may also want to install one (or completely block off coolant flow) if you have a leaking heater core.
Regardless, I replaced it in my truck because the valve itself was leaking.
      Thanks for watching :D
