You guys are surely fit able to do all that paddling 31.7 miles. Never been to the everglades but still in our bucketlist. Thank you guys for sharing.

Thanks for watching! I have a deck compass that I used to roughly navigate out to the open water. Then I would turn on my phone and open Google maps (it works even without cell service) to see our exact location. I also printed a map using NOAAs free PDFs. Once we got out there and found an island we knew was a campsite like Jewel key, it made it easier and we could find our way around using the other methods. Google maps was key though. The other key thing is to use the tides to your advantage. Paddle out to the islands when the tide is going out. And paddle back when the tide is coming in. Good luck!

I have a trip coming up, we are staying on tiger key and leaving from the visitor center, you said it was the hardest thing youve done. How long did it take you and what are some tips to make it easier?

It was hard because we didn't take the tides into consideration. If you can be paddling towards Tiger key while the tide is going out, you'll have a much easier time. And if you paddle back to the visitor center when the tide is coming in.
We made the mistake of paddling when we wanted to and not when it made sense to because of the tides. We came from 11+ hours away so paddling back to the visitor center that morning made sense to us but the tide was going out so we paddled against it the entire time. We would stop paddling and drift backwards almost immediately.
So, if you're able to use the tides/wind to your advantage, that's half the battle. Have a great trip!
