Back in the early 1990s I took a solo kayak trip out there and camped on the beach with a campfire. I didn't see another person the whole time I was there and it was really quite a little tropical adventure! It wasn't a state park at that time and the lighthouse was in ruins but you could go inside and climb it to the top. It was sort of scary as the condition of the stairs/railings was in quite a state of disrepair.
@@123gmor thanks for watching! We definitely want to go back since our first trip was cut short. This is a better video I made from all the footage from that trip once I got better at video editing if you’re interested: ua-cam.com/video/rWPpN_D3YK0/v-deo.htmlsi=OxNVCGz2jLe3N-l3
Are you father and son? Or just friends? I really liked the video about St. Joseph peninsula. It would be a fun spot to check out. My roommate and I recently started boating with a dinghy and 12 hp engine. Stayed one night on one of the spoil islands, on the Intracoastal waterway.
We’ve been friends for almost 15 years, glad to hear you’re getting out there and enjoying it!
Nice Video Thank u
@@viethoc2000 thanks for watching!

@@panamacitybeachbum yes sir!
Hey, how do you like this boat? Looking for a fishing boat that is fairly light but can hold myself and my son. Just want to fish Allatoona and Canton reservoir in GA.
@@Beyondthebite2024 I do like it but it’s not light for a kayak. But an adult and a kid would be fine in it. It’s bulky but can hold a lot of stuff. There a full review of it on our channel if you want more information or you can ask more questions.
@ awesome, thank you very much. I will check your channel. Take care.
Thank you so much for sharing this is so helpful to prepare for my first trip here! Is the waking path compact enough to mountain bike or is it pretty much all sugar sand? We wanna make the trek to 14 but contemplating if we should walk or kayak
@@gr00vyguru4 thanks for watching! We haven’t hiked the entire trail but most of what we’ve seen is soft sand. Kayaking isn’t bad if the wind is anything else but a north wind.
Thanks for commenting on my video, it led me here and I see we hit a lot of the same area's. Your videos are edited Really well, much better than mine and I hope your channel takes off and you get tons of subscribers soon. I know you're putting in the work
@@sailingslowmotion thanks for watching! This our most recent video from 4 nights on St Joe Peninsula: ua-cam.com/video/HNdoRNN9oaY/v-deo.htmlsi=_d2yxMjGSpOoACC3 That’s what got me on your channel, we’re always looking for new places to go and Shell Key Preserve as always interested us. Egmont Key looks to have the history we like to explore but I guess you can’t camp there.
@@greenridgeoutdooradventure3433 you're correct, no camping on Egmont, but if you could find a way to get dropped off there and stealth camp... I bet that would make an awesome video... Maybe on a full moon night... hmmm, I might try that, lol :)
Fantastic. I camp, surf fish and kayak fish there a lot. Only 2 hours from where I live. I know how the winds can be there. 20-30 is brutal.
@@happy_hartshornes thanks for watching! It’s a beautiful place, one of our favorites.
We’re so stupid 😂😂😂
Very cool! It looks like fresh water might be an issue on this trip. I found your channel a while ago when trying to venture out of Florida for our annual paddle+camp trip. I really want to do Fontana at some point. If you guys keep coming down here, check out the Suwannee, Santa Fe, and Ichetucknee rivers. We’ve done a lot of trips on those. Cheers!
@@kylewenzel3584 thanks for watching! We packed all of our water, so it’s definitely not as convenient as the fresh water paddling trips. Fontana is amazing, so much history and it’s gorgeous. We’ll have to check out those rivers, thanks for the suggestions. We’re hoping to do the Buffalo River (Ark) in the spring…
I brought way too much water. I’ve come to the conclusion that I need about 2L total per day based on my consumption and cooking needs.

I just unsubscribed from about 40 channels because they quit YT or stopped posting. I'm looking for a few channel to actually watch, but also grow with and bounce ideas off of each, help each other out with equipment & lighting tips etc.
@@adventureswithken1983 same here! We just subscribed to your channel. We’re the same, it’s always good to bounce ideas off others. We take about 2-3 kayak camping trips a year and post a couple videos each trip.
Is it safe to park your car overnight at the boat ramp?
@@happy_hartshornes thanks for watching! We’ve never had issues at Flat Branch and Cable Cove ramps or at the Fontana Village Marina parking lot.
@@greenridgeoutdooradventure3433 ok thanks!
@@greenridgeoutdooradventure3433 sorry, one more question. I see the number on the calendar in the reservation system. If I happen to book a site and there are other people there, is there enough room to spread out so you aren’t camping on top of each other?
@@happy_hartshornes no problem at all. Watch this video, it shows how there are two areas on the island to camp. ua-cam.com/video/b7olSg93_H0/v-deo.htmlsi=6IQ9fXhgl5glJ0it We got there first when we camped there and chose the north end of the island. And left the “actual” site for the other 2 people that booked the site because we didn’t know them and didn’t want to camp with people we didn’t know. That’s been the case with every site we’ve camped at on Fontana. Most sites would have enough room for the max number of campers but we’ve gotten around it every time.
@@greenridgeoutdooradventure3433 thank you! I watched the entire video.
How was cell coverage in the area (enough bars for an emergency if needed?)?
The west end of the lake (site 90/dam end) had zero coverage for us. Campsite 81 had enough to text/call. Campsites 78 and 73 had full coverage.

Great video. Do you recall the campsite name/number for that Nantahala site (island)? I can’t locate it on their website.
Thanks for watching! It’s not on their website. I added it to Google maps, just search for National Forest Island Campsite near Fontana and it should pop up. I don’t think you can reserve it anywhere. It’s probably first come first serve.
@@greenridgeoutdooradventure3433 Yea I saw it and your Google Map photos. I was looking for it to see about reservations. Thanks.
When we were checking it out, the main thing I thought of was the lack of firewood. It’s been picked clean. But it’s a large island, so I’m sure there’s some somewhere just long trek back to the site…
Great video! Look forward to getting out there soon.
Thanks for watching, it’s a beautiful place. 🏕️
just a heads up, try to keep it out of the sun and try to keep some kind of uv protectant on it The plastic bits that are attached to the boat do not hold up well to the sun. I can also confirm that the gear tracks provided do not work well. The scotty ones seem to work pretty good.
Can we get them in Australia
Doesn’t look like it but ascendkayaks.com might have more information. Thanks for watching!

This was a good review of your Ascend H12 man. I am thinking about getting one myself for a 2nd kayak for kayak camping. I do have a question buddy you mention about you have big feet 🦶. Just curious how big are your feet 🦶 because I have really big feet 🦶 too I am worried about my feet 🦶 not fitting in the kayak. But that was a good deal you got on the kayak. Do you know how comfortable the foot rest are cuz I have to kayak barefooted 👣? This was a good video buddy thanks you for sharing this video.
I wear size 12 shoes and in my Pungo 140, I go barefoot and my toes still are cramped. But in the H12, I put the seat on the 2nd rung from the front. And position the foot pedals so they are right under the “front Hatch”. That way my feet are in the open part of the kayak and aren’t cramped at all. And if you’re taller than 6’2”, then you could just push the seat back more so your legs are comfortably bent. I love all the room it provides for me and storing gear. Thanks for watching!
@@greenridgeoutdooradventure3433 O OK you are a sz 12 . I am a sz15 6 E wide ( which is very very extremely wide feet 🦶 ) with very very chubby fat wide toes that are Evenly straight across making my foot very very Extremely wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. My foot outgrow shoes , socks , & boots when I was young & the only footwear that will barely and I mean barely fit on my feet 🦶 are flip-flops 🩴 which barely fit me because my toes are wider than the flip flops 🩴 straps & I don't want to break the only footwear that will barely fit me. O man you have a Pungo 140 ? That's a nice kayak man. I was looking at a Pungo kayak 120 but I got my foot Stuck inside the kayak and they almost had to call 911 2 cut my foot out of a brand new kayak . It was so embarrassing cuz my foot is so extremely wide. An employee asked me is this your pair of flip flops 🩴? I said yes. Both of my lil toes hang off the footbed of my flip flops 🩴 & the owner of the kayak company & employee was looking at my flip-flops 🩴 & saw only a 4 toes worn-out smooth toes footprint on the footbed on my flip flops 🩴 & they asked me about my lil toe? That's when I told them that my foot was 6 1/2 inches wide. They had an employee with very wide feet 🦶 & he came over to me & saw my flip-flops 🩴& said I have a very wide foot & your foot is way way wider than my foot is. Which was true about he was wearing his flip flops 🩴at the time & he did have very wide feet 🦶 but his toes wasn't fat but they were spread out straight & wide across. When I got my foot out of the kayak everyone couldn't believe how extremely wide my feet 🦶 was & how fat & chubby my toes was & how evenly straight across my toes was. I have what they call box toes. My toes are not at a 45° Degrees angle like your toes are or the way shoe are made. My toes are Evenly straight across which makes footwear not fit my foot at all. I can only wear open toes footwear. But I wanted a Pungo kayak at first for kayak camping & had to go with a sit on top kayak because of how big & how extremely wide my feet 🦶 are & how evenly straight across my toes are . This is why I am looking at the H12. I apologize for this being so long. I Thought that I would share my story about me looking at a pango kayak at one point. Thanks you so much for replying back to me buddy. Looking forward to checking out your channel man.

I live near the Park and use back-country sites once in a while. -- Seems reasonable that some of the Park it Forward money could be used to create a dozen more new sites. -- As seen in this vlog they are not fancy -- and this one featured is the only one I have visited that is not a more flat usable surface. -- - jus sayin' -- The Park should have received over 5 million $ during 2023 but I have yet to see much done for improvements except for blocking off parking along Hwy 441 - It is ironic to spend money to create less parking for folks required to pay for it.
Thanks for watching! We spent a lot of time around Fontana and don't really see a lot of places level enough for campsites near the water. But I can't speak for what its like on or near the hiking trails.
Stunning ❤
Thanks for watching! ❇️⛰️
Just wondering if you have any cell phone signal at all in this campsite? thanks!
Thanks for watching! Yes, a little. We found we had more signal at the actual campsite 73 and not where we camped at the back of the island
Do you have to pay to camp
Is it a busy place? Trying to go somewhere quiet this summer to camp that’s not to busy
Thanks for watching! Not when we were there. We saw a couple of boats but it was nothing compared to most lakes. It helps that the only boats on that lake are from the boat ramp because there are no houses on it. If you go up to campsites 4 and 5, it will be even more secluded.
Man that's a beautiful area down there. We spent about half a day at Fontana in December and man it was just incredible. Kayak is also a great way to get around places like that..

@@greenridgeoutdooradventure3433 I'll be checking those out for sure.
Im planning kayak trip in the everglades soon. Any tips on navigation?
Thanks for watching! I have a deck compass that I used to roughly navigate out to the open water. Then I would turn on my phone and open Google maps (it works even without cell service) to see our exact location. I also printed a map using NOAAs free PDFs. Once we got out there and found an island we knew was a campsite like Jewel key, it made it easier and we could find our way around using the other methods. Google maps was key though. The other key thing is to use the tides to your advantage. Paddle out to the islands when the tide is going out. And paddle back when the tide is coming in. Good luck!
