  • When Guido Basso played the flugelhorn, he spoke in a way that was as warm and beautiful as he was a person. I doubt there is anyone who ever met him, even in passing, who was not touched by his grace, and when you hear him play a ballad, you know.
In the wake of his recent passing, I say goodby to a friend and my most significant musical influence, and the world bids adieu to a musical artist of the highest calibre. In this video I share a few personal recollections and a musical clip that few people have heard. I think you'll agree that Guido's voice is one you won't forget.

I had to fight back tears to make this video immediately in the wake of the news of Guido Basso's passing in 2023. The proper title of the song is Ballad of the Sad Young Men. Tunes from this session have been posthumously released on a recording appropriately titled 'One More For The Road' on Cornerstone Records.

Thanks for this tribute Chase. I met Guido for the first time on my 23rd birthday, at George’s Spaghetti House in Toronto where the Guido Basso and Rob McConnell Quintet were playing. I wanted to talk to him so badly, but was really nervous. Between sets I passed his table on the way to the washroom. I saw his flugel on the table, a Benge I believe, and asked him if he liked it. He looked up and said “You play?”. The conversation flowed from then on like we were old pals. Forty years have passed; I still play, and Guido remains a hero and an inspiration. I feel this loss profoundly. There will never be another like him.

Wonderful tribute here -- we know this wasn't easy for you to post. Some amazing memories, thanks for sharing them with us. I used to go to George's Spaghetti House and hear Guido play regularly (I also got to see Dizzy Reece there for the full week as well at one point) -- I think people in Toronto sometimes over look just how great of a "trumpet town" Toronto is (and was). Yourself, Guido, Sam Noto, the list went on -- all players with big beautiful tones all over the horn that one could go hear on any given night of the week. Your picture with Johnny Cowell brought back a great memory too -- Arnie used to sit at the end of the bar at George's almost every night and just enjoy the music with a glass of red wine. One night i got up the courage to introduce myself only to find him incredibly warm and welcoming. I was even able to get a trumpet lesson from him. Great times back then. Thx again for posting this.

In passing on what I have learned, I hope to continue their legacy.
