Well, I am UX manager of TripAdvisor, and I have kind of same story as you. I am the international student from China, After I graduated from master of Marketing Research, I could not find any job in the US. I sent 500+ resume online and try to talk with any HR, but they all highlighted that I did not have any experience, dude, how could I get experience if nobody want entry level researcher? So I back to China, walked in a Germany marketing research firm and ask HR to set an interview with me. Luckily, she gave me a chance to do it and I did! So after 4 years UX job, here I am, very happy to my job and title, love to do UX, and, nice one Kevin!

Echoing what everyone else posted--this is so relateable! I'm creative in my research methodology (I also majored in bio and do public health research at a major university), but I don't know how to draw/am not artistic at all. Given that UX Researchers work closely with the design team, would you discourage this career for the non-artsy types?

Hi Joana! Thanks for sharing, marketing is a great background! CX and UX are closely related. I gotta put my hat in the ring of course, zerotoux.com/masterclass! I’ve been away from UA-cam teaching a live cohort with a real client project (we worked with Mastercard, userinterviews, upwork, smartsheet, Surfshark, Warner bros games, and more!), and I’m also working on a self paced one too
Check it out! Happy to answer any questions. @Qianology also posted a video about the class if you want to see a review of it on her UA-cam channel
Other than that, most general UX bootcamps don’t teach UXR in depth, maybe user research academy by Nikki or curiosity tank by Michele are also good.
But I wouldn’t recommend any university UX bootcamps.

So, hardly Zero to UX. Where would you recommend starting for someone who has iffy job experience (random sales jobs for 5 years) and is graduating from undergrad with nothing UX adjacent and no research experience? How would that go from Zero to UX? Where would you recommend starting?

I loved the idea of research but could never consider finishing undergrad and doing another 4 years minimum of school. When you say degree, I’m assuming you mean PhD? If so, yes it’s still possible! Competition is tight yes, but it has always been fierce! I don’t wanna recommend grad school since it is quite a financial investment, but if UXR is your dream, I would try freelancing or getting whatever UXR gigs you can to build experience!

I've completed high school, but I'm really confused on what to do next. My interests are scattered all over the place linguistics , psychology, medicine, food science to name a few. I've currently made an excel sheet of what I'll end up with (as career options) if I pursue my interests. As in, linguists- interpreter/translator, psychology- IO psych, etc. It was quite the lengthy process (determining my interests, looking up the list of jobs on O-net, short-listing,etc)
If you can guess, I can't decide on a thing- each of the options feel lacking in one variable or the other; infact, I think I've instead developed a liking for "how to find the ideal career". One thing I have realized is that I love diving into something, and researching and knowing it thoroughly. This might be irrelevant- but as an example for my love of diving deep- I started learning Japanese out of curiosity- spent a whole week on determining the best way and in 6 months- can read a native- level novel easily (which in case of Japanese, at-least takes a couple of years). I was seriously considering the interpreter path- but think I'll get bored after some time .
I came across UX Researcher after watching this video- by complete chance , and it sounds like the dream job. Could you recommend how someone at my level (just completed HS) can become an UX Researcher? I'm puzzled in what to major in, gaining experience- and ofcourse, worried a bit on the fact that I'll be putting other of my options on halt
    Sorry for the long post/query!

Congratz on finishing high school! Ahh good times...For you, I would focus on getting an undergraduate degree, and during your undergraduate years, find some internships and volunteer positions in UX/HCI/Information Science/Psychology departments. They will be super helpful for you to gain some experience.
If you asked me what I would have done differently, I would definitely have tried to get some research internships with large companies because it seems most people are struggling to find UX jobs right out of college - and I don't blame them, the competition is high for good researchers and the job market for UXRs is booming.
But if you also asked me about general college advice, choosing one thing isn't always at a loss of another; You might be going down one fork in the road, but you can keep the turn signal on towards the other direction, if you know what I mean. For example, I majored in biology, but still ended up in UXR which is a job I completely love. Good luck and you are well ahead of the competition already if you're thinking about it this early!! Lemme know what else you'd like to see!

Here's the video I made a few years back: ua-cam.com/video/SVpobsZoNTY/v-deo.html&pp=ygUPdXhyIGJvb2tzIGtldmlu
Another book that's not on the list is Inspired - Marty Cagan. That book is by a product manager for product managers, so they aren't FULLY well-versed in UX Research, but it's helpful to know how to think like a PM and how they think about UXR.
Online courses: you're in luck!! I haven't made a youtube video in a few years....for that very reason! I've been teaching nowadays. Zerotoux.com/masterclass It is a long masterclass (20 weeks), soon I'll come up with a self-paced version.
If you're looking for something more affordable, you can try Coursera, University of Michigan's UX course which has a research module and I thought it was good!
I also have 25% off Interaction Design Foundation's courses if you use this code: www.interaction-design.org/learn-ux-design?ep=zerotoux

I am transitioning from a 20+ year career as a healthcare care provider, placing and managing critically ill patients on life support machines. Over time I wasn’t fulfilled, always stressed, when patients died, I took those feelings home with me.. over years. I decided that I wanted to transition into tech, and enrolled in graduate school studying Technology Management. I stumbled upon a UX elective and fell instantly in love with the process. I’m learning Figma, brushing up on some Adobe software, and enrolled in Google UX on Coursera + my university courses. I am currently experiencing the same with ingesting loads of information, but haven’t started designing yet and haven’t applied to any positions. But I like this route of conducting research, as my undergraduate and some parts of graduate studies are heavily research focused. (And I love research so it’s a win-win). The issue with Milan is that they want (in many cases) this hybrid position that is a mix between the UX researcher and UX/UI designer. Hey Kevin. Wow this is crazy. So up to this point I've still been on the pre med route and I'm still set to take my MCAT in the Fall. However, I've been on the fence somewhat. I did take some time off of school and went back to finish my degree. Because of this, I'm somewhat reluctant to dedicate what would seem to be at least 7 more years of my time for my career and financial security to take shape. Like you I've started mapping out other back up careers. I recently talked to my cousin's significant other at a family function who I learned was in the UX field. I started doing some digging, came across your video and to my surprise it seems like we share almost identical stories.
Naturally with my degree I've had to take some psyche and soc courses (obviously this is a requirement for medical school). I do have undergraduate research experience however my experience is mostly bench research, not human based. Do you think this would translate and serve as a good stepping stone for a ux internship?

Thanks for sharing this part of your journey. You really did just further inspire me to continue my career switch into UX research.
I have my masters in public health and up until Jan 2020 I worked in academic research settings. I understand what you mean about "change" being a slow process in that field. Personally, I also didn't like how academic researchers often used grants and publications to compare themselves to each other. I found the environment toxic to my mental health. I Jan 2020, I got a job with NYC's health department. When COVID made its way to the city, I got switched into a qualitative analyst role. I've worked on qualitative projects before facilitating interviews and focus groups; I even assisted in analyzing the qual data collected. My COVID response role has me working with a variety of qual data sources, but the most exciting data I've gotten to work with has been qualitative social media data. This sparked my interest in UX research because I began thinking about ways to use this experience to enhance my career development.
Because I don't have experience specifically in UX research, I've recently reached out to a fitness app startup and offered my assistance in gratuity. I'm being transparent with them by letting them know I'm offering free assistance because I want to show I can apply the research experience I do have to UX. I also do like the concept behind the fitness app they're developing, so I don't mind doing the work without being paid. At least for now lol. Anyway, I just wanted to share this and thank you again for further inspiring me.

@@zerotoux Very cool! You could have studied me! I work my 12 hour overnight and then attend undergrad classes during the day. I watched a few of your videos at work a hour or so ago. I think it would be a cool idea for me to check out the UX of the pap interfaces. So many patients have no clue the functions on the equipment because it’s not exactly intuitive.

Good thing you got rejected from that MSc (probably HCI?) 'cause that no guarantee for a job and you probably still have to sit with a sign in a coffee shop regardless to land that job. MSc are good to learn though, but you will spend another year in school (and more student loans) before you can work in UX.

I feel so relatable to me. I am thinking about UX research job however I have no experiences on products in business. I have been on academic field for years. I started googling and researching UX research myself. Thanks for sharing your story. It helps sooooo much

Great video! Thanks for sharing your story. I am finding more and more videos and blogs from UX UI professionals who joined the field from a non-tech related background. It's comforting to know that if I work to prove myself then I could break into it as well. Looking forward to more posts.

I've been a social worker for almost 15 years. All I do is interview people. I'm also a PhD candidate so now I'm heavily submerged in research. How do I transfer this experience into UX?

I watched this video wondering if you had to get a masters to be able to work for Google. Turns out you don’t! Thanks for sharing your journey in getting started in UX. I’d be interested to know if you’re able to give information on what it takes to apply and make it at Google.

Hi Kevin. I am a college student majoring in psych. Would it be a disadvantage for me if English is not my first language? I used to be confident with my speaking but now ugh🙉 is it too late for me to start cuz I am a incoming junior with no experience at all. Thx!!

I'm graduating this summer with anthropology, history, and sociology and I know I want to be in this field, but i'm so lost in how to start. I have great research skills and projects to show for it, but internship requirements with wireframing/prototyping programs discourage me and confuse me. This video really helped me get a clearer view of how it can start.

Thanks for watching, Beesly! Internships requiring prototyping and wireframing are probably UX or UI design, not research positions.
My company, Upwork, is hiring a UXR intern this summer, check it out!!,

I worked 7 years in marketing roles. took 3 years off to study meditation fulltime. Now just finished google UX program after 6 months. Been looking for jobs for a month now, no hits :/ not sure if it's the gap or my portfolio..

I am almost in the same situation right now, I have a master in Political Science and International relations. A recruiter called me for UX research job, I've never heard about this career before that call, but now I am very interested. I don't have much to invest in Bootcamps, so I don't know where I should start preparing.
