I m a ux designer in Europe, just want to break it to you: it is difficult to get in the industry and nobody wants a junior. People lieee a lot about it. You need not only skills, but a lot of luck! So prepare to struggle :) and if you need a job fast, I advice you to just get anything you can that s related to ux (graphic design included) and continue the hunt, or even volunteer for an NGO in the meantime to get some experience
If you have everything checked ✅good portfolio, ✅good CV, ✅good linkedin, ✅good presentation skills ✅a lot of job applications ongoing, and still can t find a job within 3-5 months, I d advice to try to take freelance jobs even if they are short term/project based, even jobs related to graphic design if you have skills in that direction. my best advice is never wait for a company's answer and let that delay your process, just keep going as if nothing s pending. i see a lot of people being so hopeful after a job interview and laying on their back as if s a closed deal, only to find out a month later that there s nothing going on for them. And learn to sell yourself :) idk how you can do that, I had a lot of 'life experience' out of my years volunteering for an NGO so if you have time and money to live, I always suggest going to volunteer at NGOs cause it s a good environment for you to grow.
In the US, companies put premiums on education background when it comes to selecting junior candidates. I work at a blue chip tech company and all of the juniors I work with all have degrees in BFA, HCI, and Computer Science (even though I have bootcamp background). It seems like market is getting tougher and more competitive (as Anita mentioned above) , but there are ways you can stand out and make the job search a little easier: *develop strong visual design chops (visual design matters when it comes to product design) *try to work at start ups that can't afford a designer & get real world projects under your belt (Y combinator comes to mind) *If you work at a start up on volunteer for a non-profit, make sure you're working on an embedded product team (engineers, product manager, etc) - this will signal to employers that you can well with cross functional peers. *When you create case studies, talk about insights over process, make your work appealing to look at, and use your own voice - don't worry about what every junior designer is doing...use your own voice! *don't use buzzwords in interviews or sound like you're reading from a script *be yourself Hopefully this helps someone that wants to put in the time and effort. The job market is brutal, but it's not impossible to break in.

It’s all BS… it is impossible in the sense that it’s basically out of your control. What angers me is that the industry always has the narrative of “it’s you and you need to be better.. a better portfolio, a better resume, more experience, better at interviews blah blah”. From what I’ve seen, it’s got virtually nothing to do with your ability. I’ve been to quite a few networking events for ux and almost everyone who got their first job basically “got lucky”. I’ve seen some incredible people who can’t get a job and some useless people who landed one immediately. It’s the job market that’s broken.. not you.

And honestly I wanted it so bad, I actually took more than 1 bootcamp(1 UX bootcamp+ multiple project courses) and spent a ton of money. People should only have done what I have done if they are in a hurry to get a job( I needed a job visa)

Honestly, we are not really competing with those being laid off by big companies..first job is the hardest but once you get your foot in the door things will be much better, I swear! The fact is that most people I know started off doing unpaid internship/work for a while after bootcamp, which they used to leverage a paid contract position, and then they will be able to land a full time job after the contract ends. It might take a while but if you keep level up you will get there

I disagree on the financial incentive. As someone who got out of a tough financial situation, I totally understand why creative/ visually skilled people would choose ux/product design over video editing or painting: the former pays better. I learned how to care for the user after studying ux design by tapping into my empathy and using the skills that I accumulated, while being incentivized by my fear of poverty. You most probably won't get rich in this field, but you will reach a point where you will be able to live comfortably and you can use that to motivate you. Now I'm in a different headspace but I'll never forget where I started. For some people it might not work out or it might work differently. Don't believe the hype and embrace your unique journey.
@kolacao8134 most entry level ux jobs in my area pay around 60 to 75k I've looked at remote work around the world too and it seems like a pretty similar salary maybe a bit higher in some places in the US I live in Canada BTW any entry level ux job that pays more then 100k needs experience cause it's not truly entry level it's just entry level at that company

lol… just a heads up. As someone who’s worked in this business for over a decade, seen the title change from “web design” to “UI” then to “UX” … i would without hesitation say you getting a interview that leads to a job is 75% luck. Thats it. Is a hiring manager going to click on your email, your profile or post… it literally comes down to that. There is no magic code or best practice to getting noticed when everyone is using the same best practice. You could be beyond qualified and if the person hiring doesn’t click through youre toast. The process relies FAR TOO HEAVILY these days on algorithms and getting hired through recruitment bots and not real people. This is the death rattle of this industry, it used to truly be based on your skill, now its just based on getting a millisecond more than the profile above and below you in a list of hundreds.
The glory days of UX design are over. Blame all the UX bootcamps for saturating the market. Bootcamps are cake. You know why? Because you're guaranteed to pass, because you paid for it. So a "certificate" means nothing. Just focus on a good focused portfolio with real projects (catch 22).
I've been working on becoming a UX Designer and realizing that these bootcamps don't show a lot of the coolest parts of programs like Figma and Adobe XD. Me too! I’m studying interactive design in college to become a ux designer and web developer. The tech layoffs are scary to hear about rn, but hopefully by the time I graduate, the market will open up again. Also hoping that my degree will give me an edge over a boot camp certificate, as I was considering majoring in a different program and going to a ux boot camp on the side, but that sounded too stressful.
This may sound strange but I developed a passion for working with end users through around 5 years of customer service in retail in addition to 2 years as a quality supervisor working directly with customers in a manufacturing setting. I JUST heard about UX design a few months back from a professor in my PHD program and decided to make it my Dissertation topic. Needless to say I am in love with the UX design process - specifically UX research. Currently taking Advance statistics for research, quantitative research design and qualitative research design in my PHD program in addition to some UX courses. But my overall goal is to becoming a UX researcher this year and maybe down the road become a UX research freelancer in the next upcoming years

What if I’m having recruiters reach out to me and then ghost? Sometimes there’s nothing you can do to target your work to an individual company
I'm currently in my bootcamp's tuition reimbursement audit (yup, I did all their requirements and 6 months of job hunting and no offers). I didn't do it for the money since even the low end of the salary range is near the top of my current field (minus manager, director, + roles) but it is a nice bonus. I did it because I genuinely enjoy the design process...but it's been rough. I've done all the extra stuff people suggest like volunteer projects, self-projects, mock interviews and whiteboard challenges for practice. I even did an unpaid internship with a startup (my least favorite thing I've done and don't recommend it if it's in the early stages). With all the layoffs and possible recession, I think FANNG/MANGA companies are doing a course correction. Those crazy perks and salary ranges tiktokers and boot camps use to lure people in are going away. Even Microsoft, who just laid off +10K people, has already relisted sr. UX roles for -100K/yr. I remember seeing those same roles a few months about listed at $130+. And fewer 100% remote roles which limits people.

Real entry levels jobs don't ask for experience there is a difference between entry level in a company and true entry level some companies say entry level but it's actually not cause they want at least a year or 2 of experience and certain skills you should have of course you would assume it says entry level so it should be for a beginner but not all companies operate the same especially bigger companies there entry level is usually high because it's not truly an entry level it's just an entry level at that company wich they set the bar for you can find ux jobs that are truly entry level and they don't ask for experience just a portfolio and what not there is also internships you can apply for online they pay alot less but they give you the experience Most people problem is they want 100k right now they don't wanna wait a year they got no patience those are the people who never make it doing anything

I’m so glad that you brought up the audit aspect because that’s exactly what I’m doing with my portfolio website, where the “meat” of my design process is displayed. I’m starting my program through Careerist. I have some previous logo designs and websites that I’ve done for my previous business. I’m a little nervous because in the end we all want it to be worth it and I’m pretty realistic so the Tik Tok videos are nice but I’m not naive lol thank God. Do you offer any mentoring ? I got a bachelor in computer science with a concentration in design, good grades, help on my portfolio from my cousin who is a famous painter and multiple years of experience as a nurse. I still find it difficult to land a job in UX

Thanks for not simply making a video trying to discourage people from going into UX design. I completed the foundations part of my UX bootcamp in December and haven’t applied for the career jumpstart portion for a lot of the reasons that you mentioned. Thanks for the resources, Mimi! I had a few of them added before, but I love the look of UX Challenge at glance, especially when one needs some inspiration for, well, challenges! ^^' Not sure if you mentioned it before somewhere, but it's vaguely similar to UX Rescue, where you can sign up and, if accepted, join strangers from around the world in all manner of design sprints that'll certainly help with confidence, building skills, and have real case studies to showcase.
Don't forget the diversity/broadness of UX Design as well. I've been a UX/UI Designer for 7 years now and have been on a 6-month contract with a government UX researcher job HOLY SHNIKIES, huge learning curves, and totally different ways of thinking(that I'm not used to). Definitely worth the experience though, I have recruiters messaging me for other jobs regularly now so although it's an uphill battle don't be afraid of learning new things! Not everything is e-commerce. Good luck!
If you open your eyes and literally hop on any job app you’ll find thousands of jobs. Don’t let people like this discourage you it’s BS the industry is growing

It's hard. I applied to 800+ jobs, 7 interviews, and 1 job offer. All that within 3 months. Yes it's hard, but possible.

Yes!!! I got my first job after 6 months of applying and 500 + applications. So seriously don’t give up before you hit 200

I’m starting my program through Careerist. I have some previous logo designs and websites that I’ve done for my previous business. I’m a little nervous because in the end we all want it to be worth it and I’m pretty realistic so the Tik Tok videos are nice but I’m not naive lol thank God. Do you offer any mentoring ? I got a bachelor in computer science with a concentration in design, good grades, help on my portfolio from my cousin who is a famous painter and multiple years of experience as a nurse. I still find it difficult to land a job in UX
Mimi you are right it is not easy I saw a job post from a company that needs an entry level ux designer but asking 4 years of experience some wants you to know some coding even getting internship needs an experience of another internship ux job hunting is not easy, so I am hunting unpaid internship to get thee experience so wish me luck🤞
Thanks for not simply making a video trying to discourage people from going into UX design. I completed the foundations part of my UX bootcamp in December and haven’t applied for the career jumpstart portion for a lot of the reasons that you mentioned. Maybe I’ll go ahead and do the design challenge and apply this weekend. Thanks Mimi

Thanks for the resources, Mimi! I had a few of them added before, but I love the look of UX Challenge at glance, especially when one needs some inspiration for, well, challenges! ^^' Not sure if you mentioned it before somewhere, but it's vaguely similar to UX Rescue, where you can sign up and, if accepted, join strangers from around the world in all manner of design sprints that'll certainly help with confidence, building skills, and have real case studies to showcase.
Why live then?
Love the advice to design think your way though the job hunt process. Diverge(explore) and converge(narrow) your way through.
Don't forget the diversity/broadness of UX Design as well. I've been a UX/UI Designer for 7 years now and have been on a 6-month contract with a government UX researcher job HOLY SHNIKIES, huge learning curves, and totally different ways of thinking(that I'm not used to). Definitely worth the experience though, I have recruiters messaging me for other jobs regularly now so although it's an uphill battle don't be afraid of learning new things! Not everything is e-commerce. Good luck!
If you open your eyes and literally hop on any job app you’ll find thousands of jobs. Don’t let people like this discourage you it’s BS the industry is growing

Oh, and Skillshare has a UI/UX design class that helps you streamline components in Figma. Because Figma is a popular tool in UX design roles, I've found this class to be extremely helpful when creating components to use over and over again in designs--highly recommend it!

As a UX Designer I wonder if you would recommend to have a 14inch or 16inch laptop to work on when doing a daily tasks, such as conducting or analysing the research? 🌻
