A relative of mine used to own a bar/hamburger joint in Chester where Elzie Segar, the author or Popeye visited. All of the characters were based on real people who frequented this joint. The actual place is long gone but if you visit the museum they will tell you the history and show you the photo of it. There is also a mural that was painted on the side of the building that shows the joint. Not one building is left as they moved the whole town. I know my relatives who ran the place are in a couple cemeteries there but I have no idea who the actual people were that the characters were based off of.
I am from Chester and my friend and I wrote the mayor when we were in high school to ask to have the mural added on the wall when what building used to be there was torn down and made into a park. We also asked for a water fountain but got a gazebo instead. I still have the letter.
This was fun. I love seeing all the things dedicated to Popeye. There were so many Popeye things in that store. Thank you for bringing us along so we could see all this. Take care.
Jordan, another fabulous trip. Who doesn't know and love Popeye? And my favorite of them all THE SEA HAG! Remember her? I can't believe a real phone booth! Wow!!!!! I will be visiting Chester for sure!
Jordan, I don't know what your plans are but you should check out Metropolis, IL, which in in Southern IL as well. They claim to be the home of Superman and have a giant Superman statue downtown.
Another great episode Jordon. I appreciate learning about your country's history, such as Lewis n Clarke. Please drive carefully & give Sir Jah a scratch from Eleanor-Rigby in Adelaide, South Australia.
In Flint Michigan when I was a kid, we had a little bar/restaurant near my house called Whimpys. They had the most delicious hamburgers. Interesting town and information.
WOW! I'm from Southern IL (Carterville- it's between Carbondale and Marion) and I never knew Chester was the home of Popeye and his creator. I always heard about Superman being from Metropolis but this is the first I've heard of Popeye being from here. Thanks Jordan, great vlog!! 🙌💜👍
I'm 51. As a kid in the 70's. I started out watching the 50's Era Popeye 'toons .Then later the network started playing the 30's and 40's Black and white episodes. Even my dad as a kid watched those old ones! Popeye was my favorite! I thought if I eat spinach I"d get super strength!😂
Hi Jordan, oh, Alice the Goon used to crease me up every time she was on. My favorite was the Sea Hag and the Vulture. I used to love playing the Popeye arcade game in the early 80's. I can see it now collecting all of Olive's love heart kisses on the ship with Bluto chasing Popeye, and then punching the can of spinach so you could punch Bluto. Happy days. Great vlog Jordan.
This community have really put a lot of effort into making their town an interesting, attractive and fun place to explore. Really glad you made the stop here it certainly cheered up our morning. Many thanks Jordan.
Always enjoy your trips! I remember as a teen having to find a payphone because my chevette broke down. And then my hubby using a pay phone when we were dating before cell phones! 😆 I always learn so much from you!
Great job Jordan. Really enjoyed the video. Love your channel Jordan. Great to see Jah. Grew up watching Popeye with the comic strip, movie & cartoon. So great to see all the statues. Keep up the great work.
Man I miss my hometown Illinois! That’s awesome! I loved Popeye as a kid growing up in the 70s! I used to read also the comic strip all the time! From the newspaper! I didn’t realize that Popeye’s hometown was Illinois! Small world! That’s awesome! Gonna have to take a trip back to Illinois to pay a visit to Popeye town! How cool. Enjoy the trip!👌😎👍
Jordan, have become a big fan, your Chester blog in particular. You drive thru my hometown of Red Bud and your first stop in Chester the white building was my grandfather’s Mobil gas station. The painter on the lift at the mural I believe is my cousin Ted. What fun it was to watch. Spent a good part of my formative years in Chester. Norm
As a kid Chester was a half mark from Collinsville to Grand Tower to visit grandparents. Born I n the 50's grew up with older and newer comics and cartoons but never knew all the history you provided. Thank you! Moving close to Sparta IL where a factory of comics and Sunday comics was so always had plenty of comics as a kid. Thanks for the memories.
Billy Costello was the original Popeye voice. He was the drummer for Waring's Pennsylvanians. I f you look up In My Gondola-Waring's Pennsylvanian's he speaks like Popeye at the end-he sings If my gondola was a motorboat, putt, putt, putt...I have the original 78 since my teens, 1st time I heard it, I knew he was Popeye's voice.....
Hey Jordan! I caught the Popeye video. That was great to see! I just thought that I would also suggest if you come through Illinois again that you might want to check out Metropolis, Illinois that is close to the Kentucky border. Plus, I watched about your experience at Wrigley Field. Beautiful ballpark to go to. I grew up a CUBS fan. I can remember my great grandfather would have the CUBS games on TV. Where I grew up either you are a CUBS fan or Cardinals fan. St. Louis is 2 hours away from where I grew up.
This is great Jordan I need to check this place out. I live in North Missouri. Always loved Popeye and The Robin Williams Popeye movie. Such a classic peice of history.
You should have gone into the courthouse, the 5th floor is an observation deck! You're on a bluff and you have a sick view of the Mississippi. You can't bring phones or cameras in though. Someone I worked with said you can have your wedding up there.
As Ed McMahon was the perfect sidekick to Johnny Carson and actor, Fish & Chips baron Arthur Treacher was to Merv Griffin; Jah is the perfect sidekick to Jordan the Lion.
You should have visited the graves in Chester of Segar's inspiration for Popeye, Frank "Rocky" Fiegel and Olive Oyl, Dora Paskel to round out the whole story. They even have the characters on their headstones. Still you did great as always.
@@DazewithJordantheLionI wasn't complaining. I never find your videos too long, every one of them is great and if you add more I would still love them! Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the video...Jordan & Jah...love Popeye cartoons..loved this town..how they put up all those statues of all the cartoon characters...but they need to put one up of Jesus also...that's just the way I feel about it 😊
Oh Jordan 😆 "Jeep" "Jeep" that's what he said..... he disappeared....there is a high school in southern Indiana with the Jeeps as thier mascot....I asked someone from the school when they took that mascot name.....because if they were a school before Popeye they had a different mascot, but he said it's always been the Jeeps....I doubt it lol
Hey Jordan, your less than 2 hours away from benton Illinois. Do a show about when when George Harrison visited his sister in benton Illinois. Its very interesting, and I think you and everyone would like it.
He played the VFW! I met the author of a book about that at Chicago Beatlesfest. The house was declared historic designation. George Harrison's sister married an American. He junked up on what American kids were listening too. Scouted the country. All before Ed Sullivan.
Thank you Jordan so much for this video - I would NEVER be able to see this otherwise! Loved Popeye cartoons - "All I can stands cause I can't stands no more" I still used that line when I get upset on watching current events.
When I was a kidd I was on the Popeye show with the captain and cookie my mom gave me a permanent which didn't take and only one side of my didn't curl but I got to go . I'm 70 so it was a long time ago

I've been all over chester as a kid an adult and didn't know half of what I just learned in this video.... Again great job and be safe on your journeys
You wouldn’t get a dial tone on a pay phone until you feed it change. However the signage says “911 calls only.” Great video and great content on your channel!

Wimpy was the only college graduate of the Thimble Theater gang. He eventually lent his name to a popular hamburger restaurant in London.
Just great and interesting stuff to see and always especially interesting to learn some backstories and history 👍.

The Jeep vehicle was allegedly named after the Jeep character in Popeye because of its ability to do anything and go anywhere.
That was awsome
