  • This video is an introduction to pretty Galway City. We'll simply take a walk through some of the city's most vibrant areas to get a feel for the place. Galway is situated on the west coast of Ireland in the county of the same name and in the Province of Connacht. It's a city with a long history dating from its foundation in 1124. Part of the original walls of the city still remains. The city fell into decline after the Great Famine (1845 - 1852) and never really recovered. However, it saw an emergence as one of Ireland's cultural centres during the period of the Irish 'Celtic Tiger'.
    A lot of work goes into these videos. You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers.

    I really enjoy the auto free streets - easier to walkabout without risk of getting killed by motorcars. My first trip to western Europe in 1993 was Stockholm Sweden which also has large area in centre of city that has no automobile traffic.

    Been there a few times from Kerry. It really is just another overrated tourist attraction town - highly overrated.I did however have my best pint of Guinness there, and the best fish chowder. Tourism has taken over Ireland.

    • @nakedireland
      @nakedireland  Рік тому

      Alas Paul, I sympathise with your feelings about tourism taking over Ireland. Yes Galway suffers from that, no doubt, but it still has a lot to offer all the same. Let us know where you got the Chowder and Guinness if you remember. Also, the north of the island is now perhaps the most unspoilt in terms of tourism, due to its being overlooked during the troubles. Lots of good places to explore there and I’ve made videos about a few.

    Great video ! We’re almost to go to Dublin and Galway next month , do have any advice for us ?
    And some information about how to do with COVID things for the trip ?

    • @nakedireland
      @nakedireland  3 роки тому

      I think you are in luck, most Covid restrictions will be lifted from 22nd Oct in Rep of Ireland. So that means you should have no problems accessing pubs and restaurants. My advice when you get to Galway is just to head for Quay Street, that’s where a lot of the action happens. If you like traditional fish & chips there’s a great place called mcDonagh’s just at the end of that street. There’s plenty of good pubs - take your pick. In Dublin I strongly recommend visiting a pub called Grogan’s on South William Street. Otherwise visit the Templebar area in the evening. And if you like parks, try st Stephen’s green at the top of Graften street (see my film). Don’t forget to get yourself a big pint of Guinness while you’re here!

      Hi there, I didn’t notice that, but I think you’re right. There’s generally a lot of young people, from all over the world, in Galway as it’s a university city. But not sure why younger men don’t feature in this video. Good observation though.

      @nakedireland  Рік тому

      Yes it’s a lovely place Jack, but we don’t refer to the UK as the mainland? The European contenant is prob the closest thing Ireland regards as a ‘mainland’ of any kind. But Rep of Ireland is obv an independent country.

    I grew up in the upper Ohio Valley in the US and am primarily of Galloway Scots, Scots Irish, and Dublin Irish ancestry. one cool evening in Galway I was walking from my bed and breakfast into town to get something to eat when I got a sudden kind of rushing feeling of home. Houses along my route were lighting peat fires in their hearths to drive off the evening chill. Peat smoke and bituminous coal smoke are not unpleasant (at least to me) and smell about the same. I grew up in a house heated by a some what leaky bituminous coal furnace replaced by gas in my late teens. I know this might not be popular today but I will always remember Galway because of the peat fires of the late 90s.

    • @nakedireland
      @nakedireland  Рік тому

      Thanks Wowbagger, yes the smell of peat (or as we say, turf) fires have that nostalgic connection for many of us in Ireland. Even if we don’t come from the countryside where turf burning was more common (like myself), it often reminds us of going there on our holidays. I personally love the smell of turf. Actually, I have a video about turf in Ireland which you might want to seek out. Thanks for watching and for your comment.

      There’s an interesting museum down on the quays, near the Spanish Arch. This might be a good starting point to get a historical overview if that might interest you. Otherwise it’s all about discovering the town and its quaint little streets, charming old buildings and nice pubs, often with live music at weekends. Wander round the city’s waterways (I did a separate film on that) and don’t forget to visit the leafy university area - a nice walk.
