  • Single-length irons have become a hot topic since Bryson DeChambeau added them to the bag and then started winning while using the irons. But can just anyone benefit from one-length irons? VP of Instruction, Nick Clearwater, and Director of Teaching Quality, Brad Skupaka, discuss the topic and see how well these particular irons gap out in a standard bag.

    Seriously guys, when you’re already that biased, why bother? Did you really think this was an objective analysis for a one length set? This should have been a teaching video in a course on confirmation bias. The concept works for me and my improving 6 handicap and I love my one length set. I’m a current Golfec student and the instruction has been great, though I have to admit (nothing personal), it’s probably a good thing I didn’t end up as one of yours.

      I concur, the arrogance is almost palpable. Not everyone is a 3,6,9,18 handicap. Some need another alternative else they'll give up the sport. The game has a bad enough image already, it doesn't need further despondency.

    I've been playing the Cobra King F8 one length irons for a couple of years and cannot imagine ever going back to conventional irons. I presently have 6i - GW down - struggled with the 5i so have a SIM Max 4h and 5h. The SW and LW are conventional lengths and that's mostly for feel....i just couldn't get used to the longer length for the shorter shots that i would use those clubs for. Changing to the one-lengths has helped me bring my index down significantly; lessons have helped (incl. GOLFTEC) but the positive impact of these clubs on my game cannot be denied. I have not tried any of the other one-length clubs that are available to know if the loft and lie angle methodology they use would improve or hurt the experience I've had with the Cobra F8 one-length irons.

    It seems to me you guys completely missed the mark on these clubs. Was this video Intended for GOLFTEC students or tour players? You start with the assumption that everybody hits it straight and never top, fat, or thin. Most players will never know how far they hit their 4 iron because most can’t hit it consistently let alone hit it 230 yards. I’m actually a GOLFTEC student and my first lesson dealt with where my 7 iron bottomed out. This helped me tremendously hit the ball straight with a slight draw. Do I care if it only flies 150? I’d be quite pleased with a 4 iron that I could consistently hit 180 instead of the occasional 200 plus at the cost of the usual slice, top or chunk. This is where a set of irons like these would have the greatest benefit to average player trying to break 100. Honestly how many golfers who break 80 are students at GOLFTEC? Oddly the more I think about it the more I think these irons would benefit my game-despite your “review”.

    "It made it hard to figure out when one I was grabbing." Yeah, that's why they have numbers on them.
    About 85% of the gapping in irons comes from loft differences, with length making up the rest. In single-length clubs, adjustments need to be made to the clubheads. Wishon uses two different types of faces to accomplish this, with high-COR faces with low-lofted irons and a softer face for high-loft irons and wedges.
    Every spec should be the same with your irons. Length, lie angle, weight, MOI, swing weight, offset, everything.
    Yes, slower swingers can cap out at the 5- or 6-iron with single-length. But those slower swingers should be hitting hybrids instead of 3- and 4-irons anyway.
    My swing speed doesn't change throughout the set. But I've been playing single-length clubs for 6 years now. I don't want different lie angles or amounts of offset. The whole idea of going to single-length clubs is to swing them all the same way. If your swing speed is changing, you're doing it wrong.
    You're missing a sand wedge, which should fit that gap between the LW and the GW.
    If your 4-iron is carrying less than your 5, you've topped out and should be hitting a hybrid instead. Wishon actually makes hybrids that can be assembled to fit the single-length iron set. I use the 4-hybrid for that purpose and it plays very much like a 4-iron would. Of course, it's the same length, weight, etc of the rest of my irons set. (I have mine built at 36.5", an 8-iron length.) The Cobras are typically built at 37"--7-iron.
    Yes, you need to do fitting to get the carry distances you need by tweaking the loft of each club, as needed.
    My 8-iron swing speed is 86mph, so I didn't have any gapping problems in the set. (I'm 62 and slowing down.)
    The LW isn't very useful around the greens, but awesome with full shots from the fairway. Why? Because of it's length, it is just too flat to be flexible with chips, pitches, and lofted shots. You can choke down on the grip, you can open the club face, but you cannot do both. It brings the toe into play if you do both. Thus, I use a conventional LW, which I use in most greenside bunkers anyway.
    This video didn't even BEGIN to address the main benefit of these clubs: grooving a consistent swing. It has made my short irons more accurate, even though the clubs are longer than traditional, and it makes my long irons more accurate (because I'm swinging a shorter club). Consistence (accuracy and distance) is the desired aim of iron play.

    Great Video guys, I think people who try one length irons, like me, struggle with the long irons. The solution I found sounds stupid, but I use a single length 20 degree hybrid to replace the long irons in my bag. As I've found with a bit of practice, full and 3/4 swings get you 3i & 4i distances. If you then choke down on the grip and do the same you can get 5i and 6i distances. What do you think of this?

    • @GOLFTECLessonsFittings
      @GOLFTECLessonsFittings  2 роки тому

      Hey MrSitemaster2, that does make sense. We see many players struggle with proper gapping in the single length iron sets. They do tend to create better contact but can't get the carry distance needed out of the longer irons, so switching to hybrids is a good solution there. Glad you were able to find something that worked for you. 👍🏽

But when you have a wedge with 5 degrees loft gap, swing driver 120 mph, adding 2-3 inches in club length to a wedge gives you a massive jump in clubhead speed and yes I had 20 yard gaps between all 4 of my wedges. Now I play conventional wedges with 4 degree gap and I'm down closer to 12-13 yard gaps. My game between 150-90 yards is substantially more lethal now. Find myself Way less in between yardages

      @@kourt2469 well you are definitely a more experienced golfer than me. I played varsity basketball and football in high school and then just worked out through my undergrad. I jumped to a 15 handicap from a complete hacker in a year of ever playing golf and I taught myself using physics logics and intuition and developed a single plane swing on my own as well as finding variable length clubs extremely frustrating and when I switched to a single length I started being able to play consistent bogie golf on any course, any length and occasionally get some pars and birds speckled in with one length. Right now I’m working on extremely straight low side spin shots and controlling spin but gapping has been about finesse for me not swing all out on wedges. But it seems like you like to swing a full on each wedge and want a cap on your distance? Larger gaps can be dangerous but right now, I’m ok with finesse and ok with launching 25 yards over a “standard shot” to get extra height and stopping power. Do you think there are other drawbacks to larger loft gaps or is it mainly just capping a full standard shot?

    • @GOLFTECLessonsFittings

      Well at GOLFTEC we coach our students to setup with the same ball position for every club except Driver. Then with your traditional length clubs, they are built with different lie angles to accommodate the change in length so you setup in the same posture for every club. Allowing you to swing the club the same.
      To keep it simple the longer the club get's the harder it is to find the middle of the face. So with the single length irons you are effectively making it harder to hit the middle of the face with your PW-8 iron but easier with your 6-5 iron. So it would come down to which clubs do you use more.
      But like we said earlier, best way would be to test it out with a wide net of beginner golfers and see what the data says. Very hard to say.

      it does, with one length clubs you always want the same ball position.

    • @laogx4026
      @laogx4026 Рік тому

      You can move the ball front for longer draw shapes and back for shorter fades as well as adjust ball flight front vs back in stance. You just need to know where you bottom out in the swing naturally and adjust to get steeper or shallower as well as holding the face or shutting and keeping open. Your standard full shots and preferred shape will dictate your "single" or typical ball position and swing. These are not one-dimensional playing clubs; they just reduce variable length to loft variable only, swing weight, technology for what you want the clubs to accomplish, they also maintain swing speeds through the clubs for the most part. It's like using a single lithium-ion battery vs the type of batteries you have to alternate in a specific pattern +/- just right to work.

    Summary of the purpose and motives of this video..I will add, getting fit for gapping and lie angle, shaft is still great.. and well.. I’m “that guy”.. 1 year experience, 3 months with one lengths (37.75”) 170mph max ball speed, 90yard 62W to 220+yrd 5iron carry numbers all one length. Thinking of 3H one length as well. Lob wedge takes a lot of finesse but can flop shots 2-3 yards over 8-10ft. I have 5 wedges, around 240H,2603W,280Driver carry (~110 swing speed avg) but I’m also a single plane swinger and I have a very upright posture where I don’t bend over the ball.. I’ve hit 220, zero sidespin 7iron before on trackman so clubs can all be cranked up and extra gear if you have it physically and get used to them. I can actually almost add 25 yards to all my clubs like a 150 gap wedge by de-lofting and low on the face I played a full 18 with when I was getting new irons (p-5) and only had d,3w,H…
    These clubs are different and for new unbiased golfers they could make you really good in a short amount of time due to “one swing” (with 5 shapes,3 apexes) the head weights may be different and tempos may be a little different as well and there is still ball position changes for pitching, chipping and different shots it is just very much always left nut off center for the most part.

      Hey highlanderthegreat, Brad Thorberg here with GOLFTEC. That is a great question and one that is always debated back and forth amongst us professionals. One of the biggest struggles for 80's and up shooters is distance control with their clubs. So one of the big things with single length irons is the lofts and gapping issues. When you look at tour players, they are on a different level all together in controlling their distances. Does lengthening the shorter clubs hurt the armatures contact while making the longer irons easier to hit? Do you hit 8 though wedge more then 6-4? All great questions dependent on the individual golfer. These would be cool stats to track so we had better hard facts to see. A fun question I always like to throw out there is, Do you think Tiger or Jack would of won more majors with single length clubs? Always fun to debate.

    Way to start out a review. Bashing it before you ever hit them. Players didn't see the need to be in peak physical condition before Tiger. Quit being so stubborn and trying to be a tradionalist. Like you're too bougie for one length. We get it you're a good golf player. But 90% of us aren't, and don't have the time to get better at long irons. We just want to go have fun and strike the ball well, who cares about gapping when you can't hit a 5 iron to save your life

    Not sure two guys could come off more cavalier than these two clowns.

      Hey Iuan, this is Brad Thorberg with GOLFTEC. First off thanks for viewing our content. Are you referring to the total weight or the swing weight?
      In this video when they talk weight they are talking the swing weight is the same all the way throughout the set when the measured them which they found interesting because in a traditional length set the head change weight to keep the swing weight the same as clubs get longer and shorter. Hopefully that makes a little more sense

    Stopped watching after 2 minutes because the bias was clear in your opening comments. Thumbs down. 👎
