I cannot say it any other way, but you have soooo just changed my life. I was having a heck of a time figuring out how to change colors. Especially since I had no clue the pattern I made was called a graphgan. I quit so many times before finding this. Thanks for the confidence booster. You are amazing and detailed.
So thrilled I found your video!!! Your transitions are exactly what I've been looking for. So not happy with my current transitions and am now going to pull apart what I've started to start over. Thanks again, I truly appreciate you being picky like I am!!
I definitely agree! You literally saved my life, or at least my mind from going crazy. My son's Christmas blanket will be so much better now. Thanks a ton 😊
I've been struggling with changing color in the middle of my work and find many videos are hard to follow, and ur video just change my life 😭 thank you so much!

Omg finally! You explained it just right and It all makes sense! this was perfect! your a life saver! Thank you xx! ( it was also extremely satisfying to watch)
Thankyou for the detailed video. I started with lettering for my son and the color changing was difficult and it wasn't looking neat, with your lesson it is coming out well.... Appreciate your work on making this and sharing it.
I am a beginner at doing graphghans, I started a pattern but took it apart because it didnt look right and your tutorial just made so much sense😊Im going to try again.. thankyou thankyou thankyou❤
You don't know how long ive searched and searched to find a way you have shown for chart changing colours on pictures. Im so happy to have found you, took two years but got there in the end :) Its going to take me a while to change my ways but Im very patient lol
Hi I have been reviewing your video and I think I am comfortable starting over. I see that I just have to have many bobbins of yarn to change the colors without having long strands of yarn being carried over and across my work. Thank you so much for such a great video. I will be checking out more of your videos.👍🤗
20:30 this is the part I have so much trouble with, and I appreciate how clearly you demonstrate this. I had initially left my slack completely loose in the back without stitching it in. Color change is difficult for me and I really want to get better at it. Thank you for your video.
I just made my own graphgan and I've never worked one up before. You answered every single question I had. Thank you so much for such a clear and informative tutorial. It was perfect. 🥰
@@YarnjoyPodcast thank you! It is actually the first thing I've ever made for myself, believe it or not. It's a blanket with Prince's symbol on it. I love his music so much. It's a secret project though, so just between us 😉 Thanks again!
Thank you so much for this very informative video! I had just started a mini wall hanging graphgan - only 3 simple shapes but was having issues deciding what/where to carry/join new yarn bobbins in - and this was a great help. Cheers from New Zealand :)
Thanks for this tutorial. I always wondered why people used so many different strands of yarn and I didn’t know how it worked. Now I’m ready for my first graphgan
That's great! Yes, when you are making a two sided design like a blanket, there can be lots of strands to work with. A one sided project, like a bag, where there is a backing or lining is a good first time graph project because you don't have to worry so much about the design except for one side. You can carry the yarn over colors on the backside. Let me know how your first project goes. :)
This was super helpful!! I just started a watermelon sweater from Gravity Falls, and this is my first time working on a pattern with color change that isn’t just stripes. I couldn’t find the words to describe the problems I was having with the color changes for the seeds, but this video answered all of my questions. Thank you!!
I love your video.can you do another when you have 2 stitches passed.i saw what to do with 3 stitches passed but I need help on what do if there are 2 stitches passed.
Great explanation! I would like to a video of how you planned your work. How you determined how much yarn to place on your bobbins and how many bobbins. I’m a beginner and never thought I would/could anything like this. But, your video has given me encouragement to try. Thanks.
Thank you so much for making this easy to understand. I've never changed colours mid row before, but now feel confident enough to crochet a blanket for my mum for Mother's Day. Thank you!
This is so helpful, thank you! 💕 I’ve been mostly just making amigurumi since crocheting clothes and blankets and such seemed really intimidating, but I’ve found a sweater pattern I really want to make and I’m very excited to try now that I think I understand all the color changes a little better. The detail in this video really helped me understand, and I love how clean the color changes look with this technique. Thank you so much!!
I wished I found you a few weeks ago because I made a dairy cow blanket but its a mess I have to tie in so many strings now I just didnt understand how to do it properly but thank you for this video !
Thank you so much this is exactly the information I needed to do a project, after watching several other tutorials that didn't explain how you carry the yarn so neatly in transition I was ready to give up 👍🧶♥️
Thank you for the video. I do mine a bit differently but now i see what I would have to do if I left the strands in the back instead of pulling them forward.
You are a lifesaver!! I just started my very first graphgan and I’ve taken it apart like 4 times once the color changes start. It just looked all jagged and nothing like the graph. So your knowledge and techniques have been sooo helpful!! I’ve watched this several times now! Thank you so very much!! 🌸
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! THANK YOU!! I was doing my transitions with scraps - knowing darn well I'd probably never weave them all in but I digress - the way other videos show it. After a few rows I thought I had miscounted because the edges of my colors weren't lining up so I frogged 3 out of 5 rows and did it again and was STILL unhappy with the look. I noticed this time that the color changes were slanted depending on whether I started them on a RS or WS row and I really hoped someone more knowledgeable than I but just as detail-oriented had figured out a way to make cleaner transitions. I took notes and timestamps directly onto my pattern so I can hopefully get this blanket going now that I won't be bugged by the sloppy color change edges! I think I will also try to use bobbins this time around as it looks like it will cut down on the weaving-in part later. The
I would probably try to carry the yarn across. But if I am not able to hide it, then I would do a standard color change. You can use a yarn tail to straighten up edges if there is one nearby.
I'm about to do a really detailed graphgan blanket and there's a lot of single stitches that go up diagonal one on each row. I've had simpler charts with a bit of that in the past and they just look messy, but I've just tested a small part out using your tips and it looks so much better. It actually resembles the graph now. Thank you so much for sharing these tips 😊
Great video! I am, however, curious as to why you use a slip knot when you introduce a different color. 🤔 Why not just add the color without it? What is the benefit of the slip knot, if any? Thanks!
The last graphgan square that I did was Tunisian. I think I prefer this way over Tunisian. But that's just me. Lol. I'm hoping that these tutorials will inspire people to try different ways of doing them so they can find the technique that they like the best.

I love this video and am very thankful for your instructions but I would like to know if you don’t mind sharing, what program are you using on your tablet? I have been on the hunt for a good app to help me keep track of my graphghans as I have been doing more and more. Since I started that seems to be the closest to what I have been looking for! Thank you!
I've never done a grahgan before but i think I'm finally going to try one! does it matter how many rows i have before i start my graph or could i start it directly on a chain? :)
It doesn't matter. I like to have a row or two as a border. And then after I finish my graph I add the same number of rows on the top to match the bottom.
Hi, I am working on a Buffalo Bills pillow my question is how many bobbins did you have for this crab project? Reason I'm asking is my pillow has a main blue color and white and red to outline the bull, so the colors come in like 8 blue, 1 white 49 blue, the next row will be 44 blue, 1 white 4 blue 2 white and 7 blue . I am having trouble carrying theses colors . And I still haven't gotten to the red. I should say this is my first attempt at an graghghan. Should I have bobbins at each section of color changes? I am completely lost at this project. Thank you for any help you can offer.
Yes. Have a bobbin for each color section. Then you just pick up that color when you get to it on the row. I don't carry my yarn unless it is just a stitch or 2. And if it is not going to show through. I made another tutorial showing more about handling the bobbins and color changing. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/byt-gKfWheU/v-deo.html

Hello from Mauritius...I'm new to crochet but you explain everything so clearly that I find it easy...Thank you very much...I wish someday you would do a tutorial how to do a cat graphgan...I love cats😍🐈
You can carry the yarn along with you, working over the strands that you are not using. I personally don’t like the way that you can sometime see the yarn strands that you are carrying across especially if you are using a light color as a main color. But if you are ok with the way it is looking, then feel free to do it with however way you are comfortable with.
I am sorry if you mentioned in the video and i missed it, what is the name of the program you are using? i want to design my own pixel art using a digital grid just like this, thank you!!
What do you use to put your pattern in? It looks like your using a tablet. Do you need a special app? Could you explain so I am able to see the pattern I have and to keep myself on the correct row. Please help!
Thank you x 100 for the transition explanation! My graphgans look so messy and I can’t wait to try your technique!one question... will that transition technique work with hdc’s and dc’s? Thank you!
I don't know a whole lot about it myself. My husband downloaded the image on there for me. I have also manually created the chart on there also. You can probably find some tutorials here on UA-cam showing you how to do it.
I pretty much do it like the other color changes. You just have to change back to the next color in the last pull through of that stitch. If the piece is going to only be seen from the front side, I may just carry the yarn across that stitch in the back and change right back to it with cutting the yarn.
I have restarted my project three times because my color changes look terrible. I am so excited to get started again. Thank you so much!!!!!

Thank you so much for showing this tutoriall. I just wish I had seen it before I did my very first graph Afghan (Batgirl).
What app did you use to view your graph on screen and to follow it row by row?
I just found the answer to my question - sorry!! I just created my stitch fiddle account. What an awesome app!!
I’m new to stitch fiddle how do you get the graph on there that you get or buy ?
I don't know a whole lot about it myself. My husband downloaded the image on there for me. I have also manually created the chart on there also. You can probably find some tutorials here on UA-cam showing you how to do it.
@@YarnjoyPodcast thank you I can’t find anything on you tube that helps my chart is big and in pieces will take a lot of ink difficult to read in bits
How do you handle when you only have 1 stitch of a color and then crochet over the top of it on the next row?
I pretty much do it like the other color changes. You just have to change back to the next color in the last pull through of that stitch. If the piece is going to only be seen from the front side, I may just carry the yarn across that stitch in the back and change right back to it with cutting the yarn.
