- The oil competition series intensifies as Amazon Basics competes against Liqui Moly. Is the low-priced AmazonBasics full synthetic 5W-30 motor as good or better than Liqui Moly's Top Tex 4200 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil? I am not sponsored by Liqui Moly or Amazon Basics. I purchased both of these products using my own money. I am not sponsored by Amazon, Liqui Moly, or by any product manufacturer. 100% of Project Farm videos are ideas that come from those leaving comments. So, thank you very much for requesting this video!

I have loved watching all your tests. Seems like a strange thing to say now that I have typed it haha. I recently had a new engine built for my race car with forged internals. The machine shop who built my engine requires me to use Motul engine oil. I have always used amsoil. I was really hoping you could do a test with all the oils generally used for racing. Amsoil Signature, Liqui Molly, Motul, Royal Purple and then maybe verus Amazon basics full synthetic.
Performance plus by safety clean? The feedlot I drive for only uses it in our truck and I’m not sure why and no reviews online I can find.
The 4200 is rated for Dexos2 (dexos blue) and other Low Sap standards which prioritize Catalytic Health over all other metrics.
It's a really strict standard that the AmznBasic Dexos1 doesn't meet.
@projectFarm
I applaud your work.. This is like comparing a honeycrisp apple to a royal gala apple.
Would love to see Liqui Moly's Molygen in this test and see what shakes the scorboard.
The flow test would be alot more accurate if he had a trail of bearings for the oil to flow its way around down the slide.
A good idea for another oil test would be to use the lubricity tester on the oil again after it has been cooked to see if it still provides enough protection after being exposed to high temperatures
Great recommendation! I'll do that in the next round of the playoffs.
I'm curious about running oil in an engine for 2 hours, then running it through the lubricity tester. I wonder what other factors the moving engine has on the oil than just "cooking" it?
This is an excellent idea, I am very curious to see how much less cooked oil film can handle. This is my main concern with oils, durability.
@@ProjectFarm If or when you do that, you can use the same bearing as that would eliminate any variance between two different bearings.
@@HankeyMountainGarage Good idea
Can't wait to tell my grandkids all about the great oil wars of 2019?

Typical of the germans to lose another...
When is the public going to realize we already got renewable motor oil, anyhow? Green Earth Technologies: Beef Tallow Based Motor Oil. Renewable Lubricants Incorportaed: Veggie Oil Based Motor Oil, ATF, Grease, Penetrating Oils.
These online oil wars have been raging for almost 20 years on BITOG (bob is the oil guy).
The oil war starts NNNNOOOWWWWW!!!!!

Lol thats me at 2:28AM 🤣
Is everyone watching this at 2:30?
What about at 4:30 am?
Muslim spotted he's gonna detonate himself
need to have a HOT FLOW CONTEST as well as a cold flow. the better oil would be the slowest in the hot oil test.
Great recommendation!
Better get a good high speed camera for that one.
I still want to see a lubricity test after the oil has been heated. I would like to see if the oil breaks down
That won't necessarily be true. Different oils have different breakdown and break in points. There is wide range of disparity between new viscosity and after 800 miles of use. Shoutout to blackstone labs.
There used to be a great forum that posted great analysis, unfortunately they were bought out by an oil company (go figure)
Essentially he could run both oils in the same engine for several durations of 1-2 hours, then test the difference.
Yes!
So if we mix bacon grease and Amazon Basics we'd have the perfect oil. Lol
Would smell GREAT... LOL
Now's your chance!
Was thinking the same thing. I know my cast iron pans act like Teflon.
@@TheLittlered1961 John, you and Jack ought to go in together and start a company and then get the Commander to run a test on it and yall would be world famous! That DID sound good.
Person driving behind you would be drooling like hell...
I discovered Liqui-Moly when being stationed in Germany, I tried it in my Volvo 850R out of curiosity and my god it runs smoother than the Castrol I used to use. Better fuel mileage too.
Thanks for sharing!
I am currently stationed in Germany. I use LQMoly in my 2018 BMW m4 and she runs like a champ.
I actually just serviced my car with liquimoly for the first time, wasn't this top tec one it was the same but a more expensive new version, either way the engine runs smooth as hell and I've gotten way more mpg than I was used to, so there must be more to it than these tests
@@ggcpf2874 Numbers anyone?
Never mind, numbers don't matter when such a figure is so variable based on driving habits. Smoother is too subject to human psychology.
Same! My 2011 vw Jetta tdi runs so smooth on Liqui-Moly.
Great job, Todd! I would like to see these videos labeled Oil Playoffs Round 1, Round 2, etc. That will make it easier to watch the tests in order from beginning to end. I don’t think many of your viewers would just skip to the end because your videos are much more entertaining and informative than anything on TV! Great suggestion! Thank you.
I love the way you announce your oil races. Sounds like a horse race!

I've really been waiting for him to spill some but he never does!
Some did drip down the test tube!
@@nate2529 ya I guess he did spill a little liquid moly around the 0:50 second mark and then again around the 7:50 mark. I totally didn't notice the first time, if it was me pouring that stuff the test tube would be a mess!
Every time I change oil, I get some on the manifold, even with a funnel. At least it won’t rust out...
I would love to see the bearing test with the cooked oil too. That would be a great addition to your testing.
This will be the real test as the oil is new just for a moment when it is inside of a running engine.
I really enjoy watching your videos. But the testing methods in this one left me with some questions. How can you compare Oils without testing their lubrication at an actual engine temperatures? Maintaining lubrication at hight temp for an extended period of time is the MOST critical property of any engine oil. It's what makes an engine oil an engine oil.
Cold start viscosity is all fine and dandy, but according to the tests in your video, you might as well use sunflower seed oil.
I agree with you. Some of the testing is irrelevant because the oil's not at temperature. The cold flow test is the only test that's relevant
Left in the middle of another channel's video to watch this.
It's Project Farm time y'all!

Amazon basics vs supertech, the budget oil showdown
Great test request! Thank you
I think I have asked for this as well. Would be willing to do it myself if I had a lubricity tester.
both oils are made by Warren, but only they could say if the additives are different. so yeah, good test!
@Richard Skipper should....
Royal Kings oil is also made by Warren lubrication and it'd be nice to see all three of them neck-and-neck
A lot of us are still waiting for The Super Tech vs Amazon Basics test! I know it’s coming eventually, I’m just very much looking forward to it. Thank you for doing these!
Thank you very much!
There are others that have already done that test and super tech full synthetic and amazonbasics full synthetic are about the same
The fact that the person that reached out to PF didn't come out and say they were different "which wouldn't give any secrets away" kinda tells us that they are the same just different package. Happens a lot with all the stuff we buy.

I agree. The only 0w-40 oils which meet FCA 'standards' which also works in my 6.4 Hemi is Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, Mopar (relabeled Ultra) Synthetic, and Amsoil. Stupid warranties and certifications.
I should add Ravenol SSL to this as well.

Thanks you!
i've been waiting for this one... i'm actually surprised at the Amazons oil quality.
Yes, Warren Distribution did a great job with their oil!
Put Amazon Oil in the car and expose to unburned gasoline, moisture and other byproducts, send it to the Lab and see how well it protects engine. Then claim it's quality Oil, based on real engine operation and real lab results.
I know I'm tempted to switch but I've used Castrol gtx for years and my engine seems to like it but the price for the Amazon is unbeatable then again I can usually get a 5qt jug of Castrol at my local Kmart for 14 bucks
Same here, if it weren't for the fact I can get cheap synthetic from a bulk buy I'd definitely buy it
Amazon doesn't produce oil. They either buy the blend or make the blend. There are only 3 oil supplement manufacturers in the world. All engine oil producers buy additives from these 3 companies :)

Except for Amsoil. That shit is the best
I would never buy Liqui Moly even if this test never existed. Overpriced junk. Look how much it changed after the heat cycle. Garbage.
Amazon is good quality oil. It’s low because it hopes to take a chunk of the oil market , long term strategy monopolization
@@JSPHTRS yeah Amazon is already there. The only downside is that u can't get stuff immediately, but 2day shipping is amazing

I can’t believe German engineered oil was beaten by some cheap oil made by some capitalists
@@EngiesParadise I know its a joke but Germany is capitalistic as well just saying
Yeah doesn't say anything about the effects of the oil on modern diesel engine exhaust systems. Liqui molly only one of the few oils to be rated 507, and allowed by VW for use on TDI motors. Doesn't ruin the DPF and exhaust system

Im interested in this as well as i have always thought pennzoil to be crap but honestly id like to see may make me not think so
@@finharms9439 What rock have you been living under? Times have changed. Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 is truly top 5 or top 10 oil of the world. Shell is the parent company - same as Quaker State. Both are superior to Mobil 1 in terms of real world burn off in the summer and have less change in viscosity. Plus both provide more power and less noise at first fill and after 3500 miles. Used all in my 1991 160,000mi CRX, 2003 187,000mi Xterra, and 2003 91,000mi G35 (Mobil 1 junk never touched that car). My 1999 162,000 Camry 4cyl has QS full synthetic - I used to drive 6 hours 3 days a week. 100% confident Pennzoil and QS best A LOT of oils on the world market. I am loving Amazon/SuperTech/WARREN right now. What a great US company!! Amsoil and Motul are excellent oil beasts too.
Violeta Arreola the reason i think as pennzoil as crap is because they are affiliated with quaker state, if you remember back in the day it used to sludge up fairly quickly, i have always been a firm believer in Castrol GTX and Lucas, however if you are correct which im not saying you are or aren’t but this is why id like to see the tests in an unbiased environment, like i said it may change my mind

F1 now uses Amazon basics
Great information. I didn't know this.
SiGHT SMaSH - either that’s a joke or it’s really because amazon sponsored their oil needs. Doesn’t mean it’s any better then any other brand with the same freakin API certification. Lol.
Never look at the sponsored logos as an indicator that they are using THE BEST. They are using what’s cheapest / FREE.
Those engines get rebuilt after every race anyway, so who gives a hoot what oil they use for ONE RACE duration. Lol
@@I_know_what_im_talking_about Well, the other thing is that it's just an entirely different application. Under high performance racing conditions, you need something that's going to hold up to the heat, and not shear, froth, or separate. So in those cases, you want to have a fairly basic additive package, and not have to worry about VII breakdown.
So even if it WAS what F1 used, that doesn't necessarily make it the best for YOU to use.
@@ProjectFarm it's a joke. Each F1 team uses propietary oils.

No, DO NOT use car oil in your motorcycle, it will cause your clutch to slip
@@Technie87 I understand that. But I also have my reservations that it actually will. I honestly think you wouldn't even notice. Obviously, it's not worth the risk but it is worth testing.
@@abarrick09 Well the difference is there because its a real thing. There is a motorcycle specific oil because there are cases of clutches slipping because of the use of conventional oil in a wet clutch style system. Do a quick search of "should I use car oil in a motorcycle" and you'll find out. Now , if you want to test the lubricity ability of that of a motorcycle oil compared to a car brand then thats a different question

No need. Engine flush is not mandatory on every oil change or ANY oil change if you are hitting proper change intervals.
@@peterwelsh6975 ya but it would still be cool to see how well it works just because it's what he do! In all seriousness I'm very interested. A real world application might be where an engine wasn't so well maintained or has unknown maintenance and you the consumer are trying motor flush to see if it helps out. I actually used motor flush religiously in my 97 nissan altima for years and it didn't hurt anything mechanical anyways. In the end my rear main oil seal started leaking badly and the car wasn't worth much so I junked it. I actually read years later that the motor flush might have caused the oil leak by removing the crud that kept the seal from leaking.
Sonuvishwanath 9945312235 It’s certainly not. Regular oil changes will ensure your engine stays clean. I rebuild motors and see it all the time. Just recently rebuilt my 600 hp Toyota motor after 5,000 miles and it looked as clean as the day I first built it, and that’s with low detergent oil

To be honest, I’m just pleasantly surprised that Amazon has such a great oil. Where it does on further tests doesn’t even matter to me at this point (and I do love the tests). It’s a great price, it works well, and ships fast. My oil search is over. Oh and yea, it was watching these tests on this channel that sealed the deal for me buying Amazon Basic Oil. So thank you.
Great to hear!
Ya know, deep down you know Amazon is a big greedy company that you shouldn't like. . .
... But damnit they never let me down.
I work for them, trust me I know the pain.
Thank you
Why should you not like big greedy companies? Especially if they provide good products at reasonable prices.
@@itself227 because you need to consider the people working for them.
@@MitchJohnson0110 so if it is not a great place to work, then do not work there. I would bet it pays better than I make. ($13 an hour)
I actually bought Amazon basics oil for my truck. It's arriving soon, and I hope I am as Happy as all these other buyers are out there .
I've had great results with the oil in my vehicles.
@@ProjectFarm My only complaint is the lack of any easy way to see how much oil remains in the container.
@@FWDoraDora13 Supposedly, the new batches have a visible meter on the side. Check out the new reviews.
Love your tests man!
Thank you
When doing the lubricity test maybe next time swap the bearings and test again so both bearings will have liqui moly and amazon marks on them just to rule out any variance in each bearing roller, great video by the way and awesome results
Thank you for the video idea!
Any plans to include Pennzoil Ultra Platinum full synthetic? Great video as usual! We appreciate your diligence!
Great recommendation!
Agreed its one of the best oils in the sub $25.00 that i have ever UOA blackstone tested. But the Amazon/Supertech oil is very good stuff.
@@joshuarobinson7522 , what your metal wear numbers?
Please test Castrol Edge 5w-30 oil as it is suggested oil for VAG cars (Audi, VW, Seat, Škoda and so on).
P.S. Your channel is the best on youtube. It really gives the best content for an engineer minded people :)
Great recommendation and thanks for the positive comment!
You should do the bearings wear test with the cooked oil as well.
Great videos, thanks for sharing!👍
Thanks and you are welcome! Thanks for the suggestion.
The only person on the planet that can get me excited about oil racing. What a cool dude 😎
Thank you!
