Are They All The Same Motor Oil? Let's Settle This! Four Levels of Pennzoil Motor Oil Compared

  • Let's find out if Pennzoil's motor oil (Pennzoil Synthetic Blend, Pennzoil Full Synthetic, Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum) are basically the oil. All four oils tested sent to an independent oil lab for oil analysis. I tested oils for evaporative loss, lubricity or film strength, cold oil flow both new oil and after exposure to heat. Additionally, in a final test, Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is exposed to 10% gasoline and another sample is exposed to antifreeze to see the impact it has on lubricity or oil performance. I always buy all of the products tested to ensure unbiased test results. So, thank you for supporting the channel.

      FYI A little Marvel Mystery Oil (Substitute a quart a couple of times.) will condition and swell "rubber" gaskets and seals due to it's aliphatic hydrocarbons. They will never dry out, crack or split. 40 years and no leaks! Take note that they will need replaced if components are disassembled because they will be too large to use again. It is also excellent for cleaning, freeing and quietening sticky lifters. After MANY years of real-world testing, I now do NOT recommend using MMO every oil change because I think it does not have good lubricating properties.

Always shake the bottle right before pouring the oil into your engine!

I try to stay away from high ZDDP oils as much as possible. The Pennzoil Platinum has very low levels and that is what I like to use. I also use NAPA branded oils (Valvoline with a weaker add pack- read lower ZDDP). My oil change intervals on this car are very short to avoid acid build up and to counter a weaker antiwear oil situation. Turbo Subarus WRX/XT are known to have rod bearing related engine failures. A lot of people in the Subaru community react by using slightly thicker oils that have higher ZDDP concentrations but that actually contributes to failures. Subaru does not say explicitly about ZDDP having a deleterious effect on silver bearings just requires synthetic oils of no higher than 5w-30 viscosity, ...these thinner oils have low ZDDP levels mandated. The thicker oils nearly all have higher ZDDP levels. I am saying all this since you mentioned the ZDDP topic. Thanks for replying btw. I hope you're not a WRX owner using high ZDDP. I admit this is a bit of a late post for this, but there's some interesting context I can provide. My father was a chemist for Quaker State's Research Center; he did a lot of the testing on their original 4x4 blend. Almost all motor oil sold in the US is a synthetic blend or full synthetic. If I remember correctly, it's largely because getting non-synthetic oil to meet modern standards is extremely difficult and expensive. Synthetic is still largely based on crude oil (it doesn't have to be, but often is) - it just means that the hydrocarbons, instead of being simply separated into types, are physically and chemically modified into a more 'ideal' form. Typically, this means cleaving off impurities and chains with less-than-ideal properties, then reassembling the chains based on the formulation you're aiming for. API doesn't even really track conventional vs synthetic anymore - it's only really a marketing term these days.

      I'd love to see that! There are some filter tests out there, but almost all of them are just visual inspections of the filter construction/media. The few I found that measure the ability to filter out particulates are unfortunately pretty old and don't cover a lot of the newer filters designed for extended drain intervals like the Wix xp. I'm really interested since a lot of newer vehicles have a recommended oil change interval of 10k miles.

    • @colinreed62
      @colinreed62 2 роки тому

      To do this properly, it could be extremely expensive, but would be awesome. Particle counters up stream and down stream ($16k each) and measure differential pressure (could be anywhere from $100 to $100k depending on the DAQ used) would likely be necessary to test properly. The main things manufacturers are concerned with when making filters are particle filtration efficiency and particle capacity. I've been using Amsoil 5w40 in my turbocharged GDI 2.0T engine. It currently has 217k miles on it and makes about 100 hp more than it did stock. BSL told me to go 9k miles between oil changes but I stick with 7k miles. Factory oil cap says to use 5w30 but in the owners manual it says I can go up to a 15w50 (ambient temp below freezing). For my other 2 cars (2014 Corvette z51, 2009 Gmc Acadia) I use Pennzoil Platinum from Walmart since I can get it in 5 quart jugs. The Vette takes 9.6 quarts to fill and the Acadia takes 6 quarts.
    I'd like to see the difference in wear scars between 5w20, 5w30, 5w40 and 15w50. I think it would make an interesting video. You could also go over the owners manual recommendations and teach most of your viewers how to read and decide which oil is best for your engine.
    My turbocharged engine is one with a recall that a lot owners have rod bearing failure between 60k and 120k miles, I'm convinced my choice of oil and filter is what has kept it going.

    • @notsureyou
      @notsureyou 2 роки тому

      Generally speaking oil protects against wear 2 ways.
      The first is film thickness (oil viscosity), the other is film strength.
      If you are in a warm climate (no snow) using a thicker oil will protect the engine better than a thinner oil (provided the manufacturer specifies that the thicker oil is allowed)
      The 2 down sides are that thicker oil increases fuel consumption compared to thinner oils, as well as reducing performance a bit.
      If the viscosity on the oil cap and what is in the owners manual differs, my guess is that what's on the oil cap will give you the best performance (output and fuel economy)
      From what I've heard racing engines generally use thicker oil (for the better protection), so you using a thicker oil may be the reason that you haven't had any issues with rod bearings.
      Though without knowing the root cause of the issue I can't say for certain.

With that said, it's so awesome to have someone willing to spend so much time on something as important as oil. Not just that, but you found a way to make this study quantitative. But don't get me wrong, German Liqui Moly oils are some of the purest and true synthetic oils in the world, their standards demand it and their customers love it.... But Ultra is in a class of it's own.... quality and price wise...

    As someone who uses Pennzoil products myself, this was very helpful! I especially found the difference in "cooked" vs "uncooked" platinum cold-flow performance fascinating. Here's an idea for future oil reviews: we've seen how all the big names like Pennzoil, Amsoil, and others stack up, but what about *dealership* oils? While some automakers partner with brands that have already been tested, some have suppliers that are not brands you can buy from local stores (Subaru for example uses a brand called Idemitsu). In summary, which dealership brand has the best oil, and if you still take your car or truck to the dealership for service, should you be bringing your own oil? I know I always prefer to bring my own oil and filter, but I know plenty of people who don't think it's worth it. Interested in your thoughts, and I look forward to more great videos! Keep it up!

There was an internal memo about it that was sent down to us selling the oil while I worked at a parts house and thought that was a bit more than misleading.
