Hey, I’m curious if you don’t mind.. what oil temps do you avg with you N55? I just got a 435 M sport and I’m usually at a tick before 250F or right at 250 with daily driving. I live in LA where it’s a bit warm, so I’m sure that factors in some. I’ve been told my multiple bmw specialist that this is normal and also the bmw manual states this as well. Just curious what you’re seeing and also did you notice any cooling advantages once you switched to the GTS hood? That’s something I’ll be doing soon. Thanks!
I own a 2011 e90 335i and my temps are just below 250, if I drive calmly for around 15-20 min (which is rare😂) It goes down to around 200. Just be careful it doesn't go above 250°, also check that you put good quality coolant, and check the coolant pipes here and there to make sure there aren't any leaks etc.
@@gomidasodabashian4904 Thanks for the tips! Yea, I noticed if I drive relatively calm on the highway, it stays right under 250. I drove it in much cooler weather (40-60 degrees F) and it either took longer to get up to temp or never really reached 250. But now that I have it back home in LA, where temps are pretty high.. it seems to run at 250. I just got an oil changed (bmw specialist) and they gave it a good bill of health. I think next time I need some service, I’ll think about switching it to a mossleman thermostat. My only concern is I don’t want it running too cool to where I’m not getting the benefits of the oil being used, since I’m not tracking the car or anything like that. Luckily we should start to see some cooler weather here, so it shouldn’t be that bad. Maybe by next summer I’ll make the upgrade. Thanks again!
@@mohammedalroz2955 Yea, I’ve noticed that after a year of ownership. Especially if it gets up to temp, then I turn it off for a few minutes, once I get back to it and get on it a little bit it runs much cooler. Hi Fritz, thanks for your great m235i content as always! After watching your video I plan to give this Liqui Moly a try but I’m debating on whether to use 5w-30 or 5w-40 for my next oil change. Ive been on the OEM BMW 5w-30 for my past oil changes, only yesterday that I got an “engine at minimum level” warning signal from the car and I’ve been trying to figure out if it is the lower top end viscosity that’s causing my engine to burn the oil quicker (I’m pretty sure the decrease in level is not due to a leak). My concern with 5w-40 is that I live in Vancouver and we have much cooler summer than California. Hoping you could give me some advice, thanks.
Hello there. It looks like your question did not get answered so let me add my 2 cents. The most protective oil which is called Liqui Moly Synthoil 0w40 has an incredibly great film strength and makes your engine quieter. It can probably make any engine last to 500k miles. But it is a little thicker so I recommend for summer weather. For winter I am using 0w20 AA LiquiMoly and it seems to be doing well because it is lighter and it's still not that hot where I am at. If you want to see some of the Liqui Moly oils being tested for the scar size when spun for 10 minutes you can search UA-cam for keywords: Piotr Liqui Moly + the weight oil.
I have an M54 not the same engine but I had it since 35k miles and its at 144k, 5w 30 was super smooth and a good oil weight up until 100k miles or so, once I started touching 100k that's when you get the spark plugs coils, and whatever replaced, the car ran good but when I switched to 0w-40 and the car was warm it way smoother running on 40 than 30, now the engine will only run on 40. So I say depending on how hard the engine worked in its life, how many miles, and oil change cycles switch to 40. I also noticed the car burns way less oil now, its been full now for like 3,000+ miles so far.
thanks so much for all your replies! so i’ve switched to 5w-40 and couldn’t be happier. The engine is smoother, happier, unnoticeable oil burn. I feel BMW should just recommend the 5w-40 for the n55. Cheers.
It would have been easier to compare for example, the oil pressure at different temperatures, the time it takes for the oil pump to build up pressure at the cold start, that would have been very explicit to see if it is worth it, or which one is the best. I also wonder, in such a high power small engine, why you wouldn`t use say 5w50 molygen or 0w50 if your engine does not use oil... But hey, that's me. I`m the guy that doesn`t use what "the manufacturer reccomends" i use what i know and tested to be best. :)
What would that actually prove I would think as long as the oil would coat all the parts and stay on them well that would be fine while waiting for the oil to flow.
my wifes mazda recommends moly in the oil, and the liqui moly is cheaper than the mazda brand, so i am now using liqui moly.....the recommend for moly is the sludge fighting and lubrication properties, and if they recommend, ill use, just not the over inflated mazda brand
Liquimoly is certainly an ok oil but it's not anything special or "best of best". Has no approvals keep in mind. I've run Molygen extensively including tracking. It has a tungsten-based friction modifier. I'd say Leichtlauf High Tech 5W40 over Molygen as it has the BMW LL01 approval guaranteeing performance.
Liqui-moly is NOT the best of the best lol as you say..it’s group III crude oil. Run group IV if you want top tier oil..group III is fine but it’s not the best just saying
If you think moly is one of the best oils out there your living in lala land , in all the tests I’ve seen moly doesn’t even come close to the best 5 best oils out there, AMS oil comes first in 90% of all motor oil tests, then red line followed by castrol and penzoil, even Amazon and shell oils finish higher the moly , moly is very average oil with one of the best marketing, that’s why so many people go for it. Nothing special about it. Go and watch the tests yourself

I personally use Amsoil in my N55 for quite a few years now but might give this a try if it’s on sale just out of curiosity.
Good info.
Don’t ! AMS oil is the best oil in the world and 100% synthetic unlike the other ones that are not , full synthetic, and 100% synthetic are not the same
Um you didn't perform any tests on the actual oil. like how it suspends and removes contaminants, the break down of the oil over time, viscosity, cold start adhesion, detergents, Stabilizers etc. I used Molygen in my Forester with a performance oil filter and got amazing results. Cost was a whopping $15 more than a full synthetic oil change, well worth it.
I have only used this oil since like 2015 in my old 335i which i sold at 155k miles and my m235i i bought in 2018 and never looked back. zero issues even with heavy track use.
Are you referring to the Moligen version??
@@mcdeelo7 Clearly.
Just got my m235i yesterday. I have the new battery from my f30 in it(one month old) and it still said low battery warning after using a battery charger on it overnight til it said full/maintaining. Think the alternator is screwed or should I get my laptop and reset with ista?
My G it’s a reason the molygen is more expensive one oil change isn’t going to show you anything , I’m positive your engine would like any liqui moly more with frequent use just because it’s the best on the market as far as additives and extendinf engine lide
driving conditions need to be the same for fuel efficiency, its the engine internals that matter the most!!
Very interesting video, thanks for this!
Thank you glad you found it useful
So on my 228i, i first used Mobile one. Which i didn't feel the difference from the time I drove off the dealer's garage. About a week ago i decided to go with Castrol amd Gosh i wish i have known. Now the car drives smoother, shift smoother, quite.
This is bar far the noticeable change i registered doing an oil change.
Thanks for sharing! Mobile 1 is another good brand, but if the additives aren't correct the engine won't perform as well. Glad you found the fix 👏
Mobil1 European Formula 0W-40 does not meet the BMW LL-01 specification that your engine calls for. The castrol does though.
@@DuckMcDuckinson yup.
I was thinking of using this oil for my 2011 n55 pwg 335i. You think there’s better options?
What did you end up using?
Also Try Motul. It is also make your engine quieter.
I'll keep that in mind. Thank you
Motul oil trash engine is loud asf liqui moly best oil to use
@@hansondardignac7049 my engine runs about 5C cooler with Motul X-cess 5w40 compared to molygen 5W40... for my next oil change, I am going back to Motul. I also have a 2015 M235i
@@okpoobi Try Motul 0w40 X-Max or LL Synthoil 0w40. These are superior oils.
@@okpoobi well done on finding an oil that suits your requirements. Where i am i only get the choice of Valvoline, total, castrol and shell products. Read so much good reports on liqui moly top tec 4600 oil. Walked into parts store and they started importing liqui moly products. I bought a quart of 4600 0w30 to try in my Mercedes c270 diesel car.
The best oil on the planet imo for any European engine is the AMSOIL European Formula. I’m running the 5W-40 FS in my 2015 428i rn and it’s literary the same color after 3,000 miles……I can comfortably run 10k to 15k intervals on this oil! Try it out once for yourself fritz!
10k to 15k mi to way to long.
@@osmansiddiqui96 based on what data?
Did you do oil analysis?
@@Tritium1775 There's a ton of data out there that oil thins out the longer it's driven with. Do your research. Shorter oil changes = longer/healthier engine. It's a fact.
@@HEABtheOrdinary I have, and invite molybdenum to the conversation. It's not to say I agree with 10-20k oil changes and myself prescribe to
Hey, I’m curious if you don’t mind.. what oil temps do you avg with you N55?
N55 likes to run hot for better fuel efficiency. When u drive hard it will actually run cooler. Mine runs just below 250
@@mohammedalroz2955 Yea, I’ve noticed that after a year of ownership. Especially if it gets up to temp, then I turn it off for a few minutes, once I get back to it and get on it a little bit it runs much cooler. After a while I just stopped paying attention to it and let it do its thing. Been great.
5w-40 is a great oil. If you are concerned at all with low temps just run 0w-40
thanks so much for all your replies! so i’ve switched to 5w-40 and couldn’t be happier.
What would that actually prove I would think as long as the oil would coat all the parts and stay on them well that would be fine while waiting for the oil to flow.
after how many km you change the oil?
7500, I think that's 12,000km
Does anyone know if it still looks green when used?
It does not. Turns black as any other oil, due to removing oil residue and other dirt from the engine.
The liquimoly jug is in liters, not quarts.
I use amsoil 5w 30
5w-30? How would you rate the smoothness and mpg?
my wifes mazda recommends moly in the oil, and the liqui moly is cheaper than the mazda brand, so i am now using liqui moly.....the recommend for moly is the sludge fighting and lubrication properties, and if they recommend, ill use, just not the over inflated mazda brand
The best oil to bmw is pennzoil ultra platinum 👌
I use BMW 0 - 30. Smooth, problem free.
That oil drain plug is aluminum. I dont trust an aluminum oil drain plug. Thats why i got a standard steel magnetic from fcp euro for $5!
It’s not a hard pill to swallow, u based it off gas mileage and sound?
Castrol is good stuff tho
Try amsoil. My engine was real quite after oil change
I've heard good things about Amsoil as well. I'll have to keep them in mind for future oil changes
👍👍👍
Liqui-moly is NOT the best of the best lol as you say..it’s group III crude oil. Run group IV if you want top tier oil..group III is fine but it’s not the best just saying
Crappy aftermarket aluminum sump plugs...
Walmart, Quaker State 5W-40, LL01 approved, 22 bucks for 5 qts. Best oil ever.
Synthoil is better . This one is not full synthetic
Liqui moly is mediocre at best. Go with redline, motul or high performance lubricants
🇮🇳👌❤👌❤👌❤👌
Castrol is much better
add MOS02
If you think moly is one of the best oils out there your living in lala land , in all the tests I’ve seen moly doesn’t even come close to the best 5 best oils out there, AMS oil comes first in 90% of all motor oil tests, then red line followed by castrol and penzoil, even Amazon and shell oils finish higher the moly , moly is very average oil with one of the best marketing, that’s why so many people go for it. Nothing special about it. Go and watch the tests yourself
Try Amsoil
Mi sembra un confronto senza senso..
