- Both Mobil 1 and Schaeffer's have been in business for over 100 years, but which brand makes the best SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil? Let's find out! I purchased Mobil 1 and Schaeffer's Synthetic oils using my own money. I am not sponsored by Schaeffer's or Mobil 1 or by any product manufacturer. 100% of Project Farm videos are ideas that come from those leaving comments. So, thank you very much for requesting this video! In the previous episodes, Amsoil won over Royal Purple, Amazon won over Liqui Moli, and Red Line won over Super Tech. The brands that won will advance to next round in the oil championship series.

Need to do Lubrication Engineers monolec tetra syn 5w30 . The ultimate synthetic oil
You didn’t put enough oil in cup on bearing test for Schaffer’s oil not fair!!
Excellent content as always Project Farm. May I suggest longer volatility tests for your oil comparisons? If you're going to "freeze" the oils for 24hrs for cold flow tests, why not "cook" the oils for 24hrs for volatility tests?
Keep up the great work PF. Thank you.

One thing is interesting: shaeffir in business 150 years and I never heard of it until 2019. Haha. They may need better advertising.
Thanks for watching!
Products and businesses that advertise by word of mouth tend to be of better quality.
@@AndyE30 Renewable Lubricants (RLI's) Oil and Green Earth Technologies' "G Oil" are both bio friendly. Veggie based and Beef Tallow based. I might as well mention them, few know about them otherwise though G Oil had advertising. EDIT: RLI's oil is about $37 or $40 for a gallon.
At $16/quart, it's gonna take a lot of sex to sell that stuff.
I happen to be an ad salesman in St Louis and I've never heard about them till last week. I'm a dedicated Amsoil user (for over 10 years) and am anxious to see the results against Amsoil 5W-30. I'm going call them up!
Never heard of schaeffers oil. Pretty impressive.
I hadnt either. It is impressive.
Great product! I've never used it prior to this test. Lots of requests to test it and I can see why.
Green Oil??????
I had never heard of it either. Weird, especially since it's been around so long. But it is pretty expensive stuff and I don't think a lot of places sell it, so that's probably why.
I believe they dye their full synthetic green. I think their conventional oils are the more traditional color.
Thank you for taking the time to do this. I've been using Schafer's for 20 years. I love it

@@mikecekic2393 not when you're changing your oil 1/4 as often and you're never tearing down an engine for engine wear failure. If you're running conventional oil you are spending four to six times more money on oil then I am in the same number of miles plus the cost of the oil change even if it's your own time and an oil filter.most of my engines run an entire year on 1 oil change 1 filter. The rest of them are changed per what the oil lab analysis tells us the change interval should be most are around the equivalent of 24000 miles on stationary other dirtier condition engines are around 12000 miles. Recommendations on the bottles are 7000 and 9000 miles but we send everything into a private analysis lab to be sure we are getting the best protection possible. I can almost guarantee you that if you sent me a sample of your conventional oil that had 3000 miles on it and I sent it into the lab the results would come back that you should have changed your oil a thousand miles ago.

Holy crap this channel is amazing. The fleet that we had years ago all transferred to Schaeffers oil after we ran a series of test between 100 vehicles. I think it was about ten vehicles each received a certain brand of full synthetic oil with oil samples sent off every single oil change. At the end of the year Schaeffers oil was decided on and we extended our 5000 mile oil changes in F150s to 13,000 miles per oil sample recommendations. The trucks were already out of warranty as standard oil changes were no longer relevant. A few of the trucks that we used for highway parts running were extended up to 17,000 miles. Amsoil was up there but they cannot beat the bulk prices on Schaefer.
Thanks! Thanks for the feedback.

lol. Great point! If you use Engine Restorer, you'll likely see that oil consumption decrease.
I've got same thing in my honda, and I'm not planning on ever adding new oil. In fact, I save changed engine oils from my other vehicles and let it burn off in my Honda.
I never would have thought of this, except my dad did same and told me. in 80's some time, he started up a home construction company, bought a heavily used truck. It turned out to burn oil pretty bad. He never even changed filter ... and got 100K+ miles without ever changing the oil. Not sure what ever happened to that truck, I'm assuming he sold it.
Sure miss my dad.
@@loves2shoot That's hilarious! great story.
Most cars do even if the dip stick level doesn't go down. What happens is water replaces the lost oil and people think their vehicle isn't using any oil when it is.

Schaeffer's 90w oil is amazing stuff. We used it at a shop I worked at. It's the stickiest, slickest stuff I have ever seen. Dip your finger in it and the breeze would make it string across the parking lot. We also put it through the friction test and it performed excellent. It even beat out pumpers lube. Lol.
I don't know much about their motor oils though but if its anywhere near as good as their 90w then I'd definitely use it.

I agree! The main reason we use oil is to lubricate, so whether it continues to lubricate after it has been heated is quite important.
@@averyalexander2303 that and oil has additives that are heat activated. oil in a bottle last for years but once you place it in your engine it has a life based on the additive package+ regular and synthetic oils. that's the reason why full synthetic oil last for 12 months.

I think the results would be more relavant and really interesting if you repeated the test with cooked oil, afterall that is what the oil is like for most of it life, it is only new for like the first 20 miles of a 3,000-6,000 mile oil change interval

@@sunshinekid6922 After bacon fat decisively beat conventional oil in the lubricity test, I've lost faith in it.
Many years ago I recall a sleazy oil additive company using the same test to promote their product. It was just a zinc additive. If you didn't know better, the test made the additive look very appealing. In actual use, the additive didn't help, and in many situations cause problems, but it tested well ;)
@@EDesigns_FL You are probably referring to zddp. In older cars with agressive cams it is actually very helpful. It is an additive specifically for high pressure lubrication. Newer oils have used lower amounts due to a change in catalytic converter materials. Manufacturers had to do so because of new regulations regarding catalytic converter warranties being extended. The new material did not like zddp. The additive for manual transmission oils have gotten varying results because of synchro materials also. I forget the additive, but when used on bronze vs steel (I think) it does an excellent job preventing wear on one but causes rapid wear on the other. That said, some additives are hogwash, others it really does depend on the application.
Very fair comparison. Great job

This is more exciting than the NBA.. my only complaint is it is too long between tests! I think it would be interesting at the very end of the bracket to test the overall winner against the last place and see what the differences are by percentage and price (cost/ benefits ratio). Additionally, a test against a very low cost "economy" brand as this would probably show the value of extra protection against wear. Thank you as always for your delivery and demeanor. I have used depth bypass filters for the last 50 some years. My oil always looks new. Looks like the Mobil 1 is lighter. Before I started using synthetics I used Chevron Delo 100 30 wt. I don't drain oil. In the 60s multi grade conventional oil didn't hold up for extended use. You for sure didn't use multi grade in a diesel. My uncle told me his 59 Ford always uses a quart of oil after he changes it. Then it's OK until his next oil change. Later I realized one quart evaporated. Conventional multi grade. They are a lot better now. When Mobil 1 first came out all they had was 5 20. You needed a pretty good engine to use it.
Im glad i found this! I only used Mobil and Schaeffers....thanks man!

@@MattTigers correct but Walmart sometimes changes their private label supplier. I know in the past both ConocoPhillips and Shell have made PLP oil for Wally's. Not bad for a rock bottom priced full synthetic in my opinion and probably suitable for most any daily driver car.

@@elonsus9747 Why wouldn't he?
Always like to see your comparison videos, thanks for the videos.

Well, it really is more interesting than watching paint dry, after all! Thanks Todd.

First video on UA-cam where you deserve sponsorship 🙂
sponsorship would change the whole dynamic of this channel.
@@spencerphilippinedream3706 You probably right, I got excited.😔
I'm waiting on pins and needles for the outcome of the Redline vs Schaeffer's oil test.
Thank you!
Love to watch these videos thanks, I drive tractor trailer for a living so the oil performance videos interest me the most
You are welcome! Thanks for sharing.
Really amazing channel my friend you deserve support
Thanks!
Schaeffer's is all we use in heavy equipment and personal vehicles. Best stuff money can buy and you get better deals in bulk.
Thank you!
I have been a gear head for most of my life, built many a car and motorcycle for over 50 years and I have never heard of Schaeffer oil
and nobody I know has ever heard of this brand either !
Thank you! Seems like Schaeffers needs to work on their marketing approach
Find a distributor, not hard , it’s also on eBay
Very interesting to watch always. Thumbs up. !!!
Thank you very much!
Love the channel and enjoy watching the different tests on oil. Thank you for doing this, it helps out the common Joe Like me. I always click the like button on all videos I watch!
Will you be doing a similar comparison for Diesel Truck Oils? Not semi truck, but oils for pickup truck/cab and chassis trucks with ratings from 350/3500 to 550/5500. It would be interesting to see comparison of popular manufactures like Rotella 15w40- vs Mobil 1 5w-50 vs Delo vs Valvoline... etc.
Looking forward to your next comparison videos, and Thanks again.
Thank you for the feedback
