Thanks to everyone who's been part of reaching 100K This was a fun video to film. New one out on Thurs. As I write this I see we have 909 likes and it's great to see the stalking crew is on the job with their obligatory dislikes.
My nephew (15) hunted deer for the first time in 2017. He had a 20 gauge slug with smooth bore barrel. He ran the deer down (200 meters), ambushed it, shot it in the heart at 25 meters, tracked it and dragged it out. So proud of him! Recovering Leukemia survivor and an all around awesome kid. Blew the heart right out. I asked him, "why did you shoot it so far forward?" Then I realized 3 years hunting ducks with his dad... .he lead it just like a duck.. ha ha.
I've used a 20 gauge more than any other single gauge I own. They're great for any small game., by which I mean rabbit, squirrel, quail, even dove if you're good with a shotgun. Turkeys need to be closer, deer need to be closer, and steel shot on waterfowl is silly. But they are capable on any of it with the right ammo and closer range. I didn't say they were first choice; I said capable. As for self-defense, especially in the confines of a home, I have no doubt of their efficacy even though I've never shot anyone. Otherwise, please wear a hat when you're in the rain! At the very least they keep water from obscuring your shooting vision! Great job, Paul.
Paul is CLEARLY WATERPROOF 😂... we should all take a moment to appreciate how many times he was in SUN RAIN HAIL AND SNOW 🌧 all that inconvenience and GUN CLEANING 🔫 😉 takes alot of time and effort for OUR EDUCATION... thanks again Paul 🫡🙏👍
Even after you're gone you are teaching my daughter and i valuable information that will raise our next generation of hunters and responsible shooters. Thank you Paul 🫡
I was just looking at a Rossi 20 gauge single shot shotgun in a pawn shop barely used "not a scratch on it "with original wood stock for $200.00. Thinking about buying it after watching this. Great Video Paul Harrell.
What we've got here is a chicken placed on a high tech chicken stand. I dont know if you intend to be funny, but you do slip in some good humor. Loved the video. Thanks. I learn a lot from you.
Paul, you're a true man of the North. Working and playing right through the rain. Of course a twenty gauge is "adequate", you just have to remember it's limits. Wonderful light guns for dove, rabbits, quail, etc.
Love the way he asks us to be the judge after he simulates the conditions, he doesnt assume to tell us anything other than what is demonstrated. I like his non macho approach to newbies like myself.
Paul casually drops axiomatic into the first two minutes of his video. I have actually changed my cadence when lecturing since binging on these videos. Such an incredible presenter!
With slugs for Bear, and Deer, and shot for Birds, the 20ga. works for me. Thanks for sharing the video and information with us all. Aww man, you could have had a give away for that leather jacket.
I feel the 20 gauge is perfectly adequate for hunting... as you said, when going for rabbits it's what you prefer, and frankly while I dont really rabbit hunt often it is one of my top choices as well as for hunting fowl and other birds. Recoil is light, allows for faster follow up shots, got plenty of load variety for whatever the game. I've taken SEVERAL deer and hogs with a .410 shotgun, and I hear all the time how inadequate it is for everything from hunting to home defense and etc. When you shot the "Deer" with the slug, that was almost a typical result for me on large deer with a .410, good sized entry hole, shreds the lungs apart, but often doesnt make it through and through. But again that's on the larger deer in the area, however it still stops them cold quite often. My second deer I ever took was with a 20 gauge with a 3 inch slug at about 40 yards. And while I've seen some guys take deer at 100 yards and even longer with 12 gauge slug guns, around here your typical hunting distances is about 50 yards or closer with all the brush and frankly that's the typical effective ranges of a LOT of shotguns out there anyways. When you were testing the buckshot, I feel a 00 buck load would prove to be plenty adequate provided you can get a good pattern at those ranges. I've seen some guns with modified chokes get some great patterns, but I also feel the ammunition can play a role in that. Like if it has a flight control wad or something designed to keep the pattern tighter and etc. So I am a firm believer a 20 gauge is perfectly suitable for small game as well as medium to large game, but like any weapon out there you just need to use the right ammo at an effective range for it.
I feel its all about the distance, depending how close you effects your gauge or calibre. For example if take a mile shot with a 22lr even if i am a good shot its not going to go well but if i am at 50 yards with a 308 it will be much more profitable.
@@kekeke4467 I've never had a deer or hog at close range get away from me when using a 20 gauge. Won't deny 12 gauge has more power and for fowl hunting it can certainly put more lead down range. I would agree, it is about the distance. But given the nature of shotguns in general, distances are usually kept within 50 yards or less at which the 20 gauge is still plenty.
@@Predalien195 most definitely. I would add that people try and use shotguns in situations where a rifle is more suitable.and then look for excuses for their lack of results which leads to claims about the unsuitability of 20 gauge when the real issue is that you are using the wrong tool. For example I saw a guy use 6 shells of 00 buck at 90 yards to try and hit some pigs no hits.
@@Predalien195 advanced modern slug guns like the savage 220 and more expensive slug guns that are capable of killing deer at 200 yards are 20 gauge the reasonings it can be more accurate and you aren’t trying to fling a 437g projectile
@@joshbennett2762 I never questioned whether or not modern rifled slugs in slug gun barrels or specifically made slug guns could reach out there. It still doesn't change the fact that most shotguns are not used beyond 50 yards.
Great demonstration/presentation, Paul ... This video answered a lot of questions in under 10 minutes, the guys that I run into would debate this for hours and never touch a firearm, ammunition or a target, thanks for cutting out all of the BS and laying down TRUTH.
Paul I appreciate your dedication. I see you put in the rain all the time, no shelter, no umbrella, just in the rain. You muddle through for us and we thank you sir.
Paul, another great video. I have significant health problems that prevent me from shooting a 12 ga. I have a 410 for home defense and I will be buying a 20 ga. for all around use. Thanks again for all you do.
Love your channel Paul! I walked many a mile in my youth chasing birds with my old 20 gauge Stevens Pump. My dad gave it to me for my 13th birthday. I'm 50 now and I still shoot it better then anything I've ever owned. Muscle memory I guess.
Paul I appreciate ur knowledge, and ur ability to entertain without being rude, and ur ability to articulate and get ur point home without being crude. So as always I thought I knew more than I did, now I do know more than I did, thanks.
As a boy growing up in the deep south, a 20 ga hand me down was all I had. I can't tell you how many squirrels, rabbits, quail, dove and even a few ducks graced our tables :-) Yes, it certainly IS an adequate hunting round, at least for small game animals!!!
My first shotgun was a 20 gauge, single shot, with the hammer, in full choke. Iver-Johnson. I (my dad) bought it used for $20. I usually shot number 6 and believe that gun made me a good hunter and a good shot. It taught me my and my gun's limitations. When to take a shot and when not to take a shot. If you learn to shoot with a full choke and have only one shot, it better be on target. (As my dad used to say: "shells are expensive." The only safety on that great little 20 gauge was the hammer. I was never allowed to walk or even sit with it cocked. That gives you a little extra time to identify your target and make sure you were on target. Even after I graduated to a 12 modified choke, I still would take it with me for rabbit or squirrel. Yes, a 20 is plenty for small game and in full choke it gives you more than enough distance. Deer? I shoot either my 30/30 Winchester or my model 1917 Winchester 30/06. Both with open sites. Guess I am still old school!
I have been hunting small game wiyh a Remington 870 20 gauge for over 40 years it has a Mod.choke and is a standard 2/3 quarter inch barrel,it has always served me very well.
Paul, I would definitely consider you a "Keeper of the Knowledge." It's nice to know there are people out there that know all of this stuff about firearms. Most regular folks just shoot and really don't know the details. Thank you sir, I learn something new every video! Keep up the great work.
Paul. Once again you put together a great Video. Many people don't realize what you just demonstrated in the way of different size Buckshot in the 20 gage. Your videos are well thought out and constructed. Just about as close to what to expect from ammo available and the choices we have. Sincerely, Dave
Great vid. I've got a buddy that almost exclusively hunts with an old 20g single shot. It's his turkey/squirrel/rabbit/varmint/deer gun. The right load for the right game at the right distance. People have made fun of him for not getting a "real" gun, but it's never failed and he shoots it well. Keep up the great work :)
I’m glad and thankful for this video. Having said that, the test did not show what my experience shooting deer has taught me. I’ve shot a few deer with #3 buck out of a twenty gauge 2 and 3/4 in chamber and modified choke, which gives the best pattern in my gun for buckshot. I’ve killed a lot of deer with 12 Gauge 3” #4 buck and a modified choke. Every deer I’ve ever shot at with these loads has died and most don’t take another step. Most of the time I’m shooting at deer less than 25 yards away from a canoe. Most of the time there are some pellets that pass completely through and a lot of pellets stuck on the inside of the hide on the opposite side of the deer. Just my experience that I thought I’d share if anyone is interested in hunting with a 20.
ua-cam.com/video/lY1J1t-SoXk/v-deo.html This is typical deer reaction after the shot for hunting at ethical ranges with buckshot if you have made an effort to pattern your gun and select the right choke and load. I am pretty sure the hundreds of squirrels I have shot with an old Revelation pump 20 gauge, full choke, would say "yes, the 20 gauge shotgun is adequate for hunting". Great video as always.
My 82 year old father has used a beautiful Bernardelli side-by-side 20 gauge for more than 40 years pheasant and grouse hunting and I can attest that with the right load he is not handicapped in the least.
I believe he was an instructor in the military and in the Oregon National Guard. He is a dental assistant. He seems to have had training in how to instruct. It explains why he depreciates his speaking abilities. That or he is a member of Toastmasters International. There's a lot of people who just like to speak in Umatilla County. I doubt you can make a living there teaching for a CHL. There are a number of places people shoot. If you are not stupid with a gun and clean up your mess, they say nothing.
He was an instructor in the military. And I’ve heard him say “in one of our training facilities” and in his older videos, something like contingency training, so in guessing he’s already doing so (or was doing so) aside from his part time job as a dental care assistant.
Great video and info on the 20 gauge. My first shotgun was a single shot Winchester 20 gauge like yours. Mowed lawns all summer to buy it used when I was 15 yrs old. Used it for everything. Birds, squirrels, rabbits, and several deer with slugs. Great gun and great round if you keep it 40 yds or less with bird shot. About 30 years later my daughter took her first buck with the same gun. Still put meat in the freezer.
I use an H&R single shot with a 25.5 inch barrel and a modified choke for most of my small game needs. I load it with Remington 2.75" XLR #5 bird shot. That's a great combo for me. Most of the time I either get complete pass through or some shot will end up just under the hide on the opposite side of the animal and fall out during skinning. Sure beats biting into bird shot unexpectedly.
Paul, thanks to you and your chicken and your "high tech chicken stand"[plus said chickens leather jacket],my keyboard is now covered in Sierra Nevada pale ale lol.

WOOHOO!! 100K!! CONGRATULATIONS! PS. Yes, a 20 gauge is awesome for hunting. Just choose the proper loading for the game intended at the range required.
No it's not anti 2nd Amendment people. I'd venture to say it's fanboys of other UA-cam firearm "experts". UA-cam can be very cutthroat. I daily see one UA-cam host attack and ridicule another.
20 gauge is what I use for all small animals. Carry slugs on me just in case I stumble on a deer but wouldn't try it unless I was awfully close. Thanks for the post! Love seeing the 20 G get some love.
As a boy back in the early 60's, I was 9yrs old. My first shotgun was a single shot youth model 20g. My father preferred his 16g and we would hunt togeather. Pheasant, squarrel, groundhogs, and deer (slugs) was taken by my little 20g. Dad taught me young at 4yrs old my first Daisy BB GUN, by 10yrs old my 1st 30-30. But my favorite at that time was my 20g youth for pheasant and grouse.
Remington Wingmaster 20 ga, pump action, lengthened barrel for birds and skeet was my first gun in the 80's. All I ever hunted with it was quail and dove. Great bird gun.
My dumbass tried to wipe my screen. I’m new here and well I have to say thank you for such info and all the time you take to make these videos it’s helpful entertaining and realistic. I will keep looking at your other videos for more info .👌🏻
I am glad to see ANYTHING from you. I was armed professionally with a 12 gauge loaded 00 Buck for stopping humans at 25 yards. If I hunted deer with a firearm, it would be a 20 gauge at 25 yards, but I'd have to load my own shells.
I'll jump on the "congrats" bandwagon, Paul. Great job on the milestone! It seems like just last year you were at 40k or so, so that growth is awesome and we'll deserved.
Tried two things for the first time ever one day a couple of months ago. One, shooting sporting clays and at the same time using a 20 gage. Fired over 100 rounds and killed 4 clays. It was a blast to say the least. Most fun I have had in a long time. I hope to improve my ratio of clays hit to rounds fired in the near future. Since shooting clays the first time I have watch a few videos on the subject and hope to have better luck next time. I have a great deal of experience with various rifles and long range shooting. Stepping in to the world of sporting clays and the 20 gage was refreshing.
Stuckgrenadepin Same. It makes me more aware and more like a hunter. I have one chance and I better not blow it. Always makes for an exciting hunt and is more rewarding when successful!

Always been great information from the videos. Love all those that I have seen.
The best channel by far.
WooHoo !!!! ..... +100K subs. Well Done! I see you're out working on your Pacific NW rain tan. THX, we appreciate the commitment to your viewers. You shoot (almost)naked chickens, so we don't have to.
Congrats on 100,000 subscribers! Well deserved.
Your videos are great. So much information. Very helpful
I was always warned about chickens in leather jackets as a child.....who knew they were friends of Paul?! Great presentation, as always! It’s nice to see the 20gauge given some recognition for once : )
Thanks Paul your subscribers are well served.
Thanks pal
Congratulations on the 100k subs, Paul
Another quality video. I was thinking of getting a Mossberg Shockwave in 20 gauge just for fun.
I'm a 20 gauge guy as well, I still like 12 just fine but 20 is my go to.
Ill join the party congratulations on 100k!..I dont think of you as the type that has a need for a fan base but i think there is a fan base with a need for Paul Harrell.
Congratulations on your 100K subscriber milestone! You have a great channel and deserve every single one of them!!
WOOHOO!! 100K!! CONGRATULATIONS!
PS. Yes, a 20 gauge is awesome for hunting. Just choose the proper loading for the game intended at the range required.
Great stuff man! And, in the wet soggy mountains of the PNW too! That's dedication!
My day has been made! Another Paul Harrel video!!!
excellent and most clear material and explanations. best from Greenland.
Damn got u twice in part 1 it was cold as hell, and this one raining ..thank you again.
Who the hell dislikes this man's videos!??🇺🇸🇺🇸
Fresh Fowler maybe tacticool wannabes and anti gunners ?
Leather jacket wearing chickens.....probably vindictive gang members of the chicken Paul shot up!
I have a couple of stalkers that subscribe just to dislike. Yes, it's sad.
Well you have 100,000 people who stand with you! How smart are those stalkers, you be the......Nah can’t do it, that’s your line : )
No it's not anti 2nd Amendment people. I'd venture to say it's fanboys of other UA-cam firearm "experts". UA-cam can be very cutthroat. I daily see one UA-cam host attack and ridicule another.
Love how he isn't pushing tactical home defence or just hunting. He covers all facets of firearms. 👍
I don’t usually leave comments but congrats on 100 k subscribers, and another great video like always.
Paul is back ! ... glad to see a new video
Thanks for not posting this at 2AM.
Sadly, whenever any video is posted it's 02AM somewhere in the world.
Happily, it's also 5PM (cocktail time) somewhere in the world.
Remington Wingmaster 20 ga, pump action, lengthened barrel for birds and skeet was my first gun in the 80's. All I ever hunted with it was quail and dove. Great bird gun.
Is the 20ga good enough? Maybe we should ask all the rabbit and qual I ate as a kid.
Lol for real 😂
*quail
@@blakedavis2447 ok you got me, i didn't proof it before i posted
🤓
Great job as always, thanks for all you do for the gun community.
Takes me back to my days of hunting the elusive "Fonzie Chickens" of Millwaukee.
My dumbass tried to wipe my screen. I’m new here and well I have to say thank you for such info and all the time you take to make these videos it’s helpful entertaining and realistic. I will keep looking at your other videos for more info .👌🏻
Mr Harrell love your vids keep up the good work from Australia
Another great video Paul. Thank you
I am glad to see ANYTHING from you. I was armed professionally with a 12 gauge loaded 00 Buck for stopping humans at 25 yards. If I hunted deer with a firearm, it would be a 20 gauge at 25 yards, but I'd have to load my own shells.
Congrats on 100k paul
Always a clear concise demonstration with proper firearms safety. 👍
I like the single-shot 20 gauge.
My vey first firearm was a single shot Stevens 20 gauge, some 18yrs ago. Not the most fantastic shotgun, but effective anyways!
Yes the Winchester looked quite nice :)
Kratos SonOfZeus me too! Lots of rabbits and quite a few pheasants in the pot with that gun.
Thankfully hunting small game you only need 1 shot : )
Stuckgrenadepin Same. It makes me more aware and more like a hunter. I have one chance and I better not blow it. Always makes for an exciting hunt and is more rewarding when successful!
Another great presentation Paul. I cant see how anyone could dislike this video.
New word - axiomatic. Thanks Paul.
Paul, you have a very good way of explaining and demonstrating. In my experience 20 gauge is very effective for hunting small game.
I use the Mossberg 500 20 gauge and I've taken down black bears slugs of course!
