I can't tell about safe to shoot w/o looking at it. Yes barrels can be re-finished or re-blued. Or sometimes they can be replaced. bottom line is if you're not sure it's safe then don't shoot it and take it to a gun smith.
An Auto 5 is probably safe to shoot, but I'd have a gunsmith (A competent gunsmith who has shotgun experience, NOT some glorified Glock armorer) take a look at it. My father shot magnum loads through an 1895 LeFever Damascus Barrel SxS Gade C Skeet gun, and the only damage was to the lock work. The barrels are still in great shape, and this gun was made to shoot 2 1/2 inch black powder shells, NOT 3" magnum shells.

I’ve been shooting shotguns regularly for 25 years and I’ve put tens of thousands of rounds through shotguns clay shooting and hunting over that period of time. I still learned quite a bit of good info from this video. Thank you, Mr. Harrell.
Wow, I've never seen this Shotgun vid of yours before and I learned so much (which has never been explained properly, before) in such a short time. Thank you for such clear explanations and demonstration. The anecdote about 'Brad' was so funny, but clearly made the point of not taking things for granted. Never relinquish your humility, you come across as such an intelligent person. Best so far, Thanks!
As someone who just recently popped into the shotgun world this was very helpful. I felt like I was drowning and had no clue what I was buying. I had to cut a shell open to figure out what the hell shot I had. Way different from precision rifles that’s for sure.
One other factor while choosing shot size for hunting that I didn't hear mentioned is the reality of cleaning game. I will shoot squirrels or rabbits with #6 shot, and high brass (if available) vs bird shot, like my friend. While cleaning game, it's impossible to remove all the shot from my friends quarry. You just learn to spit out the shot as you eat it and hope you don't crack a tooth. My shells have less shot per round so I have a lower probability of a successful kill or can mess up the game if I get a square hit. I try to aim just off the nose and have had a lot of success. And if I do get a shot or two in the meat, I cut an X over the hole and extract the shot. It's a bit more work up front, but my squirrels dont feel like they are loaded with ticks when I retrieve them either. Thanks for another awesome video. I will be showing this to my kids when they are ready to shoot shotguns one day. Thanks again.
I love guns period but, my all time favorite is the shotgun, I think it is because of its versatility. I enjoyed this video as I do all your videos. I would just like like to say, I made a ballistics video in which I used a shotgun to shoot water jugs to show the differences in birdshot, buckshot, and a slug. I realize you can have over penetration issues in a home defence situation but when shooting the jug with a slug it completely blew the jug off camera. So I think the use of a slug for home defence is a great use for a slug not just to hunt deer. A one ounce slug at close range moving that fast makes a great option for home defence in my opinion. I'm not knocking birdshot or buckshot but when people see the results of the slug at close ranges I think the 1 ounce rifled slug is an option that gets overlooked a lot.
I appreciate that you mentioned that there is such a thing as a bolt action shotgun, not very many people know they exist. I'm bummed that they're mostly a thing of the past and would love get one if I can find one for a good price.
This is the second video I've watched of yours about shotguns and I've learned more in the past 2 hours than I ever thought I knew about shotguns. Super informative and also entertaining. Really glad that I came across your channel. Also tell Brad he might need to watch your home defense video just in case the husband finds out...
Good video thank you Paul. I’m not a newbie newbie but I’m nowhere close to a know it all so this was still informative to me and even the info I already knew I thought you did a good job at presenting it. Thanks again
Thank you for your very well organized presentation, I have always heard these shotgun terms, never knew what they mean, you made it crystal clear. Thank you
Great info. I never realized that shot size deducted from .177 to give u the caliber of the pellet. I just always looked at a shotshell ballistics table. For what it's worth, i have found that imp cyl choke seems to be best for defensive use. My 20" 870 "deer" barrel (factory rifle sights) throws good, relatively tight buckshot patterns and has great slug accuracy with the IC choke. Many defensive type shotguns (almost all of which are fixed choke) seem to be going to IC barrels. So maybe the manufacturers' tests have borne this out as well. I also get very good slug groups with the simple, barrel mounted iron sights. Ghost rings tend to be a little better for rapid defensive use, however. Anyway, just a bit of info that might help some folks. STAY SAFE!
Imperator Phil. Of course not. I'll just propose to sit you down with a picture of a AH-64 gunship and a mirror and then we'll see if you have the brain power to figure it out.
Thanks for being very good at explaining all of this. I think your videos are great, and understandable to people like me who don't know much about a lot of this stuff. I was able to follow well.
Not a bad group??? Now I've never tried, but I am absolutely certain that I couldn't get a group like that at 50 yards. Another great video by a great teacher, instructor and shooter. Thank you Mr. Harrell. Your videos are as entertaining as they are informative. On the topic of shotguns, have you ever tried shooting with different adapter tubes that allow shooting various pistol calibers out of a shotgun? It's an interesting concept to me and I would like to hear your take on it. Keep up the great work!
I always check for your new vids. I pass u on to my newbie shooters. The shooting world today is not like yrs past. Progress, engineering, metal science, Innovation, ammo evolution etc has made things great for our new generation. My choices were very simple 50yrs ago but I keep learning. Life is good.
Brilliant and I needed this video in my life. Haven't really been big into shotguns since I was 13 or so and really needed a "refresher" like this. I was lousy with a shotgun back then and am not much better now, but this video is exceptionally welcome.
I'm a teenager and looking to buy my first gun but I don't know a lot about firearms. Your videos are very well done, you seem like a very knowledgeable man.
Thinking of purchasing a shotgun, so I am revisiting all of your shotgun videos..So full of info, I will have to play it a few times. As always, excellent video.
I know this is an old video and they are not common but the one thing I didn't hear you mention in the video is a Poly-choke. For anyone interested a Poly-choke is an external device that was placed on the end of the shotgun barrel at the factory, or could be added afterwards, that basically took the place of the removable choke tubes. It gives you the ability to change your choke pattern on the fly without having to remove and replace the choke tube. You just turn the device until the choke you wish to use is the one that is marked. They are ugly as sin in my opinion, but I would be lying if I said that they were not useful. I'm pretty sure they are still available today if it sounds like something you are interested in. The one my uncle had was on the end of a Ted Williams auto-loader.
Great teaching! I have been shooting for two and a half years and I am constantly learning. Thank you for making shotguns, chokes and shells sizes more understandable. None of your teaching is boring as I really want to learn. And yes, I always watch your vids all the way through. I appreciate your videos, keep up the great work!
I have a 20 ga with an adjustable choke. No not an insert that requires a tool to remove, but it's actually adjustable simply by turning the choke adjustment by hand. It can go from full choke to open boar simply and fairly quickly.
I find ammunition so confusing. Thank you, for giving me an understanding of the types of ammo, and how they function -given the number of pellets for different applications.
Thank you Paul. I've been shooting most of my life various types of rifles and shotguns, and I learned a lot from watching this video. Thank you again!
As far as the grooves on the side of the rifled slug go, its my understanding that they are spiraled to allow the ridges to swag down more easily when passing through a choke. When the ridges swag down, they get pushed in the grooves directly behind them, rather than piling up and smashing sideways into the grooves.
When I was learning to duck hunt I always preferred to use my dads full choke shotgun with two shots as opposed to a more open version with three shells. I found that I never winged a bird, either I hit it and it dropped right there or I missed it completely. It was also good for high flying geese. As you said eventually it worked against me when I ran up on a hog and took a shot with that gun he turned and charged and then I only had one shot left. We shot that hog probably nine times all together and then still had to jump on it with a knife. Steel bird shot doesn't work well on hogs.

Thank you for such clear explanations and demonstration. The anecdote about 'Brad' was so funny, but clearly made the point of not taking things for granted. Never relinquish your humility, you come across as such an intelligent person. Best so far, Thanks!
“Yes you did Brad”! 😂 Poor Jimmy……😅
As someone who just recently popped into the shotgun world this was very helpful. I felt like I was drowning and had no clue what I was buying. I had to cut a shell open to figure out what the hell shot I had. Way different from precision rifles that’s for sure.
You are a tremendous teacher Paul, I don't know how I would understand this stuff without ya!
Found my way back to this classic video. Thank you Paul for everything that you have done for us.
Great video. I learned quite a bit. One, we both have a Moss 590 A1 and I now want a full choke on my home defense shotguns. Thanks for sharing!
As a shooter who’s exposure has been only to rifles and handguns, I really appreciated this “Shotgun For Dummies” episode. Cheers.
I can't say enough good things about your videos Paul Harrell. You put a lot of effort and work into your videos.
I absolutely love Pauls presentation, excellent content every time
Just straight to the point real information about the actual subject and correct at that. thank you for real firearms education
Thank you for the memories paul...legends live forever
Paul is a trained professional at what he does and it shows 👍🏻
Rifled slugs are made to slide through tighter chokes creating less pressure from what i know... Great video!!!
“Yes, you did Brad!” I lost it.
We need some more of this older comedy in your newer videos. It's great.
This is the second video I've watched of yours about shotguns and I've learned more in the past 2 hours than I ever thought I knew about shotguns. Super informative and also entertaining. Really glad that I came across your channel. Also tell Brad he might need to watch your home defense video just in case the husband finds out...
Thanks. I'm glad the vids were useful. Yes, Brad, and Joe have a few stories on the subject of "covert dating."
@@PaulHarrell better property of Jim than frog level motorcycle club
I learned this subject in the early 1980"s but it is still enjoyable to listen to Paul and his presentation.
Good video thank you Paul. I’m not a newbie newbie but I’m nowhere close to a know it all so this was still informative to me and even the info I already knew I thought you did a good job at presenting it. Thanks again
Hi Paul, must say I really find your presentation and information great.Thank you ,much appreciated.
STAY SAFE!
i swear... its like bill nye but gun guy. awesome videos
Except Nye is a fraud; not really a scientist.
I agree with gb93669 Bill Nye "the Pseudo science" guy.

Imperator Phil. Of course not. I'll just propose to sit you down with a picture of a AH-64 gunship and a mirror and then we'll see if you have the brain power to figure it out.
sman7290 That made my fucking night! 😹
Thanks for being very good at explaining all of this. I think your videos are great, and understandable to people like me who don't know much about a lot of this stuff. I was able to follow well.
Watching some of Paul's older videos since he passed. "Yes you did Brad, yes you did". Just shows Paul's humor. Damn i miss him. Legends live on.
Thanks. I haven't tried adaptor tubes, but it sounds interesting. I'll see what I can do.
Fabulous presentation; great video! I laughed out load at the “property of Jimmy” bit!
Awesome bits of information.......most of which I knew nothing about. Excellent lesson.
Thank you Paul❤
I always check for your new vids. I pass u on to my newbie shooters. The shooting world today is not like yrs past. Progress, engineering, metal science, Innovation, ammo evolution etc has made things great for our new generation. My choices were very simple 50yrs ago but I keep learning. Life is good.
The day I fired 3.5" #4 magnum shells with 2.25oz shot, I learned what recoil was.
Ouch
You have lived!
I bet those are brutal - 3” #4 buck was my worst one I’ve shot
Learned more than I knew before so thanks, Paul.
The "property of Jimmy" joke was pretty good. This has to be the clearest explanation of what all the shotgun metrics mean.
Fucking Brad's got game (and balls) if he can bag a stamped skank. LOL.
Thank you Paul. I've been shooting most of my life various types of rifles and shotguns, and I learned a lot from watching this video. Thank you again!
All your videos are absolutely wonderful! Each one is something of a college course on a topic but is also a helluva lot more fun. Thanks!
Thanks for a comprehensive and easy to understand video!
YES YOU DID BRAD!
Jack Mehoff and Marcellus Wallace dont like to be fucked by anyone but Mrs. Wallace....
i really appreciate these long videos. lots of great info!
Thank you! Your videos are the most informative videos I've found to date.
Mr. Harrell you are a really master. Your videos are fantastic full of true information. The best
I love Paul's sense of humor, I cracked the fuck up at the "Chicken pox, get it? Birdshot?"
So funny!! What a smart dude, I bet he was a blast to hang out with.
ya you really do a great job explaining everything. you're a natural teacher/instructor. thank you
Best gun channel on youtube I like the extensive videos! Very informative
I've only recently found your channel. I love it. You have the heart of a teacher. Refreshing, relaxing and instructive.
