Hi Paul, just one small omission from you video, you mentioned bird shot is for shooting birds, and buck shot is for shooting bucks, but you failed to mention shotgun slugs are for shooting slugs. I find 410 shotgun slugs particularly effective for shooting slugs off my capsicums in the spring and I use the 12g slugs on the large zucchini eating slugs.
I use 12ga 3" magnum Foster type slugs to fight off the giant, 10 to 12 foot mutant snails that rampage in my garden. The toxic waste from the long closed DuPont plant has created these mighty beasts. Only a .50BMG can penetrate the shell, but a solid hit to the head will take them down-- eventually. WARNING! Do NOT hit them in the antenna/eye stalk-- drives them into a berserker frenzy nothing can stop!
I still never get tired of seeing Paul in his Anchorman: Legend of Ron Burgundy outfit with the .38 Snubnose. Never change that part of the intro, please. lol
This is one of the best dissertations on buckshot I have seen. You covered all of the points for buckshot usage very well. My Granddad never used anything but buckshot for deer. He killed many deer and never lost a deer with buckshot. He did limit his shots in range. I never knew him to shoot a deer beyond 40 yards. He shot a Remington 1100 12 ga with a 28in modified choke barrel most of my lifetime. He did pattern his guns to see what size buckshot had the best patterns at 35 yds. In his old Winchester Model 12 with a 28 in modifed chome barrel , 00 buck patterned well. However, the 1100 shot better patterns with #1 buckshot. Those #1 buckshot loads were very effective out to 40 yds on deer. He accepted the limitations of his weapon and hunted wooded areas exclusively. So buckshot worked well for him.

Excellent demonstration! I'd like to point out to younger viewers that, up until the 70s, you could buy shotguns with adjustable choke devices-- Mossberg made the "C-Lekt-choke" up until 1977. Most other brands used the "Polychoke", which actually only went out of business a few years ago. If you see an older shotgun with a "lump" on the muzzel end of the barrel, check it out! It will allow you to turn the collet ring and adjust from cylinder to full choke, quickly and easily. No buying extra barrels, choke tubes, wrenches, etc. You could just dial in whatever you wanted. A fantastic system! So, of course, they stopped making them...
I've always been a strong advocate of #1 buckshot, but Federal Vital Shok with their "flight control wad" really tightens the pattern and extends the range of 00 buckshot. You can definitely tell the difference. Test it yourself if you don't believe me. Thank you Paul for the great video!!!
Same here. His has a great instructional way of speaking and a person listens to every word, so when he interjects witticism into the instruction, it surprises you.
You are absolutely right, except that in the field at short range, the deer wouldn't necessarily be posing for you while you took your time aiming, so the smaller target is probably more realistic in terms of effective accuracy.
The smaller target is for practice with center fire rifles. Somewhere on it, it should have a simulated range, meaning it might say something like “target simulates 75 yard shot when placed at 25 yards”. This allows you to practice farther shots if you have space constraints on the range. These targets cannot exactly be used this way for buckshot though, given that shot spread would not allow for accurate readings.
I just wanted to know a little more about buckshot and ended up watching the whole thing. This is incredibly informative and very well put together! Thank you!
Very good video! I've patterned SEVERAL combinations of loads, with SEVERAL different size chokes, at a VARIETY of distances. It's just something that I enjoy doing. My results were almost identical to yours, Paul. I even found that it's possible to use TOO MUCH CHOKE, or restriction with buckshot. I think it deforms the pellets, as they travel thru the choke, which causes some of them to fly off target. Thanks for this, Paul...I probably enjoyed this one, better than anyone.
Great video. He covered all the issues well. I loved the multiple colored pasters. His results replicate the ones I've gotten. Using a slightly more stringent standard of keeping 1/2 of the pellet count on an 8-1/2"x11" target my cylinder bore barreled shotguns are good to 20 yds. I got my first deer with a "golden pellet" at 35 yds. Using Remington 12 ga. 2-3/4" unplated, unbuffered 12 pellet and a full choke I fired two shots. Of the 24 pellets one entered between two ribs, went through the valves of the heart, and exited between two ribs. Never found the other 23.

Paul, thank you for your great shotgun video. I think one of the easiest ways to extend the effective range of buckshot in a shotgun is to use a load like Federal flitecontrol which uses a special wad that produces pretty tight patterns. I've had good results out to 30-35 yards on human silhouette targets with 18-20 inch cylinder bore barrels. And at least with this Federal load, it can be reduced recoil or high powered and the pellets are plated, so penetration is probably enhanced.
Good idea! I've heard, but cannot confirm, using rice will make the poor birds sick or dead after expanding in their tummies. You can even reuse the shot afterwards
Thanks Paul for going to all the trouble in making all your videos, I can tell it takes some time and money. I will never probably hunt deer with buckshot as long as I live, but this video kept me glued to the screen regardless even at 2 am. Paul makes incredibly good gun and ammo videos.
For deer in my brother's backyard in Michigan rifle zone (very short range). I use a stupid 12 GA short barrel Mossberg 500 with plain 2 3/4" Remington Sluggers. It has a very old 3-9x40 scope, and is a very accurate deer killing machine out to 100 yards. When it is relaxing at home, it is loaded with 24 pellet #4 buck. (I worry about hearing loss from firing a shotgun indoors, but oh well). I have a lot of other firearms, but just grab my old 12 GA most of the time. It never lets me down. - Ed
Once again-your presentation is over the top pleasing to the eye for the visual consistency. Your words, movements are so choreographed and tight, and consistent, to relax the viewer. I found myself chuckling when you pulled the box of ammo out of your jacket, and with the same tone, cadence and delivery, said the same damn thing! Love it!
I have 5 points to add that could change the results 1. Brand of ammo : different brands have different group sizes and different impacts find the right one for your gun. 2. Most of the time you will be able to get 2 or more shots on a deer if you have a pump or semi double barrels two shots 3. Aiming where the neck and back meet you can get shots in the head neck spine and hart-lung 4. shotguns usually hit high because a bead is zeroed at 100 yards so at 40 yards aim a little lower 5. In my gun the 15 pellet buck gets more hits on target than 8 pellet buck I have shot many deer boar and vermin and do so comfortably out to 65 yards with a choked gun and pump. Pump I just squees of as many shots as i can and always got the animal
I have been a shooter, competitor and ammo-maker for over 60 years. At one time I worked for a major ammo maker in the ammo R&D department. I find myself agreeing with almost everything you say and marveling at how well you explain things. I have a shotgun here in the office, and took note of your comment that each gun patters differently and one has to test their own gun and ammo. My ammo is cheap 00Buck I buy by the case (Score brand) and use in 3-gun competitions. When I went to the range, the only open slot was on the 25 yard range. I have subscribed to the theory that a cylinder bore will open an inch per yard, so was concerned that I would lose some of the (expected) 25 inch pattern off the target. The gun is a Winchester 1987, cut off at 20” (cylinder bore non-choke). I only had 2 rounds with me. The first one printed an 8” wide pattern, 3 ½” high. The second was 8 ½ wide and 4” high. Nothing in my experience accounts for such a tight group at 25 yards. I will take several guns back to the range and try this ammo in other barrels. Maybe the wad in this ammo promotes a tight pattern in a cylinder bore. Glad I have a case of it. As you have said, many times. Each gun is different. Test your gun with your ammo. Thank you for reminding me.
I went back to the 25 yard range and fired one round of this 00Buck in 10 other barrels. I thought they were all cylinder bore, but one had a modified choke. The test is a good example of the danger of jumping to a conclusion based on a very small test sample. The modified choke gun ( a double barrel) shot patterns in the 7" X 7" size. All the cylinder choke guns (all about 20") shot much larger patterns, in the 12" x 12" range. This is still smaller than I expected, but not the tight 8 X 3 that I first saw. I will take that gun back to the range and try a few shots from it, to see if the first results were just a fluke. One thing that was clear in this test was that each group had at least 1 flyer. Some had 2. This is the cheap 9 pellet ammo.
Tested 4 more shotguns with cyl chokes. 3 with 20" and one 14" barrel. All shot patterns in the 8"x12" range at 25 yards. At household ranges, all would be on the perp if the shot was aimed. Outside, at longer ranges, there would be pellets flying into the neighborhood.

This is perfect because I just bought a Remington 870 home defense model and I'm picking it up on the 29th :D Thanks for the video Paul, it was really informative
Hopefully you get a good one, mine had a problem with shells sticking in the chamber after firing (a fairly common problem with the 870, or was for a time anyway). Some easy dremel work fixed it, but was annoying. Love my 870, still!
It is VERY apparent that people do not care about the length of your videos Paul. Keep up the great work and info and if the video goes an hour I'm sure we all will enjoy every minute of it. I know I learn a lot from this channel. Thanks and Merry Christmas !
Great informative video Paul, you covered almost all instances. I'd like to say that I found a less restrictive choke of improved cylinder (.010) or light modified (,015)kept tighter patterns. I saw that the tighter choke blew the patterns, probably from squeezing the shot down and deforming the shot causing it to spread more. I'd love to hear your theory on this?
There is a lot of very good info in this video and I will most definitely be passing it on to all the people I know that use shot guns for deer hunting. THANK you for a such comprehensive and informative video!!!
@@Rev8 Me too. I was absolutely SURE that was the direction he would go when he said he would be showing us another way (vs. the choke) to increase effective range.
I do not recall ever seeing Remington "flitecontrol" shotshells:) (I know it is Federal) If you notice Paul has an aversion to anything not Remington:)
Whenever Paul say in the interest of brevity all I can think of is the dude. I’m the Dude. "So that’s what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.”
A bit of a nitpick here, but a solid one. At 15:30 or so, he talks about barrel length as a consideration for chokes. You can get any choke in any length of barrel. Old fixed choke guns tend to be longer, but it is far from a rule, or even the norm to assume that full choke= long barrel. Particularly now that almost any model of shotgun comes with the choice of replaceable chokes in most configurations.
While chokes and barrel length can be mutually exclusive, a shorter barrel will almost always have a bigger pattern than a longer barrel of equivalent design. In general shorter barrels usually have little or no choke and longer barrels often will.
I have a Mav 88 and it came with a 28" barrel and an 18.5" barrel. As soon as Mossberg had the 22" ribbed barrel with screw in chokes, back in stock, I bought one. I usually keep a Carlson's rifled choke in it but I have a Modified and a Full choke in a pouch on the buttstock. I also added Williams ghost ring sights to the rib, and zeroed them for 65 yards with Foster slugs. Out to 175 my hold over is about a foot and a half, and I can put all 6 slugs into a 15" circle. So you can always find ways to improve your maximum effective range, IF you don't mind making changes to your shotgun.
I have a 20” Mossberg 590A1 and it will shoot the Federal Flitecontrol 00bk load so tight that I can reliably make headshots on silhouette targets at 15 yards. Easily all pellets on the same target at 20-25 yards. Another way to extend your shotgun. For home defense, if I were to run a shotgun, I’d probably go with a #1 or #4 buck, with a standard wad and pattern. If it were general purpose for hunting animals or critter control on a ranch, I’d load it with something like the Flitecontrol loading as it gives a substantial increase in range. Or just shoot the standard ammo and keep a few slugs on a side saddle to shoot when you need them.

You'll never find more thorough and nuanced firearms testing videos anywhere else.

Love it!
I have 5 points to add that could change the results
1. Brand of ammo : different brands have different group sizes and different impacts find the right one for your gun.
2. Most of the time you will be able to get 2 or more shots on a deer if you have a pump or semi double barrels two shots
3. Aiming where the neck and back meet you can get shots in the head neck spine and hart-lung
4. shotguns usually hit high because a bead is zeroed at 100 yards so at 40 yards aim a little lower
5. In my gun the 15 pellet buck gets more hits on target than 8 pellet buck
I have shot many deer boar and vermin and do so comfortably out to 65 yards with a choked gun and pump.
Although James is shirtless over at TFB TV and Paul is fully clothed I chose to watch Paul's video first. High praise
Sounds like Paul better watch his 6..

In one of his older videos he is shirtless.
How short were his shorts?
Paul I really enjoy listening to your knowledge. I never feel that your talking is dry. This was a great video. I learned quite a lot.Thank you
Merry Christmas good man. Appreciate you! Blessings on you and all your Family. All the best to you in the New Year. Keep having fun and helping us to too.
Maybe just should have just thumbed up but need Paul to know even tightwads like me who don't financially contribute do desperately appreciate your videos.
I have to say, I really became a fan of your Videos, Paul. They are very informative and you often times bring up points that aren't too obvious to everyone.
Merry Christmas Paul!!!!!!! Thanks for uploading this week!!!!!!
Your best video yet in terms of educational value! You knocked this one out of the park Paul. Gun video of the year if I were voting today.
Awesome presentation. Paul, I thought you might mention "Flitecontrol" loads. I"ve never used them, however from other sources I've seen that load might be another solution? Thanks.
Paul your methodology and presentation style are GETTING BETTER!! Hard to believe! I’ve introduced many people to firearms, and have increasingly been using your videos and to help do so. Keep it up!!
Only thing missing was Flitekontrol buckshot variants and some kind of Vang Comp Systems(extended forcing cone and back bored) modified shotgun.
I've said this on a few of your videos, been watching your channel for about 2 years now, you are the best channel on UA-cam. Of any subject matter. Thank you for what you do.
I wish nice holidays from Switzerland
Thank you and Merry Christmas to you from North Carolina.

I will miss Paul's presentations. Losing him was a true tragedy.
"Skittles Pox" 🤣🤣🤣
Either the weather in Oregon changes that quick or this video was filmed over a number of days. I would guess the latter. Thanks for putting in so much work on this video.
Best line on YT this year.
That gave me the gigs, lol.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video, it was extremely informative
Great videos. I appreciate your style. You maybe aware of "Federal Flight Control 00 Buckshot" designed for longer range hunting. This product maybe a great video idea.
Great way to end a week is with a video from Paul. This was very informative. Thank you for what you do.
This is perfect because I just bought a Remington 870 home defense model and I'm picking it up on the 29th :D
Thanks for the video Paul, it was really informative
Great choice! I love mine.
Solid choice.
Cool. I got an 870 Tactical at Walmart for $200. I don't buy guns there, but couldn't pass that one up.
@@jwash3rd I wish Wal-Mart sold guns in California. The two Wal-Mart's in my city don't even sell ammo anymore
Paul put the work in on this one.
This is exactly the kind of thing YT is best for. A clean, clear explanation from a pro. Subbed.
Another great presentation! I'm always interested in shotgun videos. I hope to see one about 3.5" shells someday.
This channel is a gold mine of information. Love it.
But what about buckshot with flight control wads? 1600fps 8 pellet, and amazing groups. Paul, please do a video on these.
Agreed
I watched the whole thing waiting for him to show these. Too bad.
@@Rev8 Me too. I was absolutely SURE that was the direction he would go when he said he would be showing us another way (vs. the choke) to increase effective range.
Versatite and FliteControl shells work like a charm in my cylinder bore 500 12 gauge, and I'm curious what Paul's thoughts are.
I do not recall ever seeing Remington "flitecontrol" shotshells:) (I know it is Federal) If you notice Paul has an aversion to anything not Remington:)
Excellent information with no fluff. Thank you so much for your service and the videos!
Whenever Paul say in the interest of brevity all I can think of is the dude. I’m the Dude. "So that’s what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.”
Paul is never out of his element.
Paul Harrell truly is The Dude.
Holy cow. Tedious? Not hardly! A ton of great information clearly presented. Thank you!
Woohoo! Caveats! I didn’t know what to do with myself since the last upload of my favorite UA-cam content.

22s r for wusses Thanks! Merry Christmas to you as well! 🎄 🎁
Honestly he makes the best videos. It's very informative
@@mustangkrillin that's the popular myth to a tee. It doesn't told up to rigorous testing though.
Actually, no. The 870 tactical 18.5 model DOES NOT have threads for a choke... so no you can not choke every modern barrel.
@@TheRoadhammer379 note that I said almost any.. Also, you can get compatible barrels with chokes.
Your longer videos are perfect to watch while on Staff Duty, and I learned something new today so thanks.
I have a 20” Mossberg 590A1 and it will
shoot the Federal Flitecontrol 00bk load so tight that I can reliably make headshots on silhouette targets at 15 yards.
Great video Mr. Harrell. It's the best demonstration on this particular topic I've seen.
Paul what about using 00buck federal Flite control wads ammo... thos things hold pretty good at a distance!!!
