Mr Phil is my favorite wood turner on UA-cam, without a doubt. I love his style. I love how he loves the nature of the wood he's working with. I love how he keeps you well informed of his intentions and how he goes about his creative process.
I also simply enjoy his demeanor and his attitude. He makes you feel like you're right there with him, kinda standing next to your grandpa in his workshop when you were a child, watching, listening and learning. That's what brings me back to his channel.

Hi Phil! Hmmm… Did you see the unmasked Ninja Turtle on the inside?😂😂😂 Do you ever look as something for the first time and it just hits you in the chest? Kind of like taking your breath away? Not that the object is necessarily breathtaking, there’s just something about it that grabs your attention and emotions without warning. That just happened to me when you first showed this finished bowl! It’s quite beautiful, but I wouldn’t call it breathtaking. Yet when I saw it, it was like a huge shock to me. I can only explain it as a strong memory. Memory of what, I couldn’t tell you. As usual, I’m not explaining well. It’s hard to describe a feeling or emotion. I have never had the pleasure of working with English walnut. Is it as nice to work with as black walnut? As usual, a wonderful piece! Thanks much!

Hey Phil, I find it coincidentally funny that the very day after I turn a live edge english walnut bowl, you put up one. Either defying some odds, or you secretly have a camera up in my shop. Benn snooping? Cheers!

Well done, Phil ! Always a joy to watch, how a piece of wood transforms into a nice bowl. Reminds me of the piece of cherry plum waiting on my lathe... got to go to my shop after breakfast. Chees Stefan

What a lovely bowl. You have inspired me and now I’m producing live edge bowls. I do wonder how you keep your finger nails looking so good, though, I catch mine ever single day and rarely leave my workshop without drawing blood 🌞

A superb bowl Phil, right up there with your best. Love the grain of this English Walnut, it certainly does have a subtle beauty about it. Always such a pleasure to watch & listen to you as you work your way through a piece. Stay warm & well my friend & thanks for sharing. Don from South Aust.

Nice job Phil I absolutely love the finish on this piece! The wood pecker holes are a plus to bad you couldn't save more of them!
I told you that my old lathe was starting to get loose in the headstock main shaft well here I sit waiting for new bushings for the poor old thing its 83 years old and I have replaced the once before 30 year's ago so I can't cry to much I guess its seen a lot of turning's in 30years
Happy wood turning to you Phil and all your viewers!👍

I do like this dish! I must have a go at thiis style of bowl: Half log, with live edge.
I have some interesting logs lurking in my garage. One of them could be a prime candidate! :D

It's life changing, Stephanie. Once you get a few of these natural turnings under your belt, it's hard to go back to plain round bowls. Those scare me! 😊

I hope all is well with you Phil. Another great piece. I tried mixing alittle sanding sealer and schelac together the other day. They didn't mix well. It's like it curded with separation. I don't know why. 😕. Anyway I hope I see you again next Thursday. Besafe I think you guys are getting alot of snow

I watched a guy turn a wing bowl just like yours. I was yelling at the guy please don’t turn the live edge away but he didn’t hear me. He turned it away ☹️. I love this bowl you have turned. I noticed the grain is very nice on the inside of the bowl. As always Phil another lovely turning.
    Thanks for the show.

Another nice piece Phil. It seems as though that wood is easier to work with than some of the other wood you sometimes work with. You removed most of the bark which resulted in a nice dark line highlight. Please keep ‘em coming’!

with your sanding drill going that fast and the lathe going that fast, what's it matter if you go in reverse? Is there a benefit? Does it get any smoother? My lathe doesn't go in reverse.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  5 місяців тому

When we turn wood, Dennis, we are laying down the fibers, away from us. By sanding in reverse, we can lift those fibers up and cut them off resulting in a smoother finish, faster. You can stand on the back side of your lathe to accomplish the same thing. 😊

Another really nice turning Phil, the shape and finish are great. Does English Walnut have the same distinct odor that American walnut has? If so, I bet the shop smelled wonderful while you were turning this.

Phil ,do you dry your wood after you cut your blanks? And do you use a moisture gage? We're going to move up north in the near future and one of the first things I'm going to do is cut some black walnut trees for a friend... and want to make some things with it...

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop

Nearly everything I turn is dry, Donscott. If I suspect it's wet, I'll use a moisture gauge. Looking for around 10% MC.
