    I remember hearing about linseed oil, if you have rags with linseed oil on them,dont store linseed oil rags in a box or container like in a shed or garage, because they can ignite and catch on fire for no reason ,other than simply storing old linseed oil soaked rags

    I have a couple rusty brackets that mount under the car that were rusty. I removed them then I cleaned them with CLR and a wire wheel, rinsed with water then I brushed them with Ospho or Kleen Strip Prep (same thing but cheaper and found at big box stores) wire brushed that and let it sit for 24 hours, then I brushed them again w the Ospho, let it sit 5 minutes then rinsed it off and dried with a clean towel and heat gun. Then I brushed on Penetrol as a primer, let that set up for 24 hours or more and then I sprayed with Rustoleum spray paint and let that set up a few days as Rustoleum takes a while to dry. Looks good so far but of course I'm now waiting for the test of time. Might continue to do this... or maybe try a different faster drying finish paint. The metal brackets were rusty and a little thin but the Penetrol seemed to thicken them up after applying the finish paint.
    I've been spraying Ospho w cheap spray bottles but haven't tried spraying the penetrol yet. The penetrol may clog the sprayer esp if left in there but the Ospho won't allow the Ospho might eat the sprayer mechanism over time. Wear respirator and gloves w the Ospho/Kleen Strip and don't let it drip onto a concrete floor. The Ospho converts the remaining rust. Kleen Strip Prep is $18 a gallon and goes a long way as does Penetrol.
    I also applied some Ospho to my patina-d '88 F150 and it really cleans surface rust. Not sure how much I want to use it as I like the rust color but fun to play around with. I just cover it up with Penetrol. My paint is really shot but I like the way it looks w the Penetrol but I do want to protect the frame like I did the brackets, get some paint on the frame but the patina to me is Art. I find it needs Penetrol at least once a year but as you know, it's not difficult to apply, I use a cheap dollar brush. They say Penetrol can be used as a primer... hence my experiment

    penetrol also works on plastic rubber fiberglas and even makes a good primer on wood. after it dries completely i have found that any paint will adhere to the penetrol.
    will protect any metal not just iron or steel.. the primary advertised use of penetrol is to mix with oil based paints and lets the paint flow and level. i painted two tractors with penetrol and paint mixed and nobody believed i used a brush . one note penetrol will adhere to almost anything and then almost any kind of finish will adhere to the penetrol. i even used it on glass.

    If you are even thinking about painting your vehicle then don't touch it with the boiled Linseed oil. Also I have found the Penetrol can "yellow" a bit over time where as the bolied linseed won't. Penetrol also leaves a sort of skin where as the Penetrol won't either. The linseed oil doesn't change anything it just preserves, the Penetrol adds something that can never really be removed. My 2 pennies.

      @@primeredisbest that’s interesting as I thought you would want the surface as clean and contaminant free as possible before you applied the penetrol. @@primeredisbest Not knocking your knowledge and expertise. I just thought you would want the surface as clean as possible without wax or other contaminants. Much the same as if you painted it. Looking at your ute you are certainly able to get good results from the technique you employ. I just want to ensure that the penetrol gets into the rusted areas and is not prevented from doing so by another applied coating like the wax. In other words I don’t want the rust continuing under the wax. A bit like applying body filler over a rusted area and it still rusts away underneath. I wasn’t sure if I should try something like prepsol or I have read about people using CLR (calcium lime rust remover) to prepare the surface. Didn’t mean to offend if I did, you have all the experience in this area and I have zero.

    • @primeredisbest
      @primeredisbest  3 роки тому +1

      @@thefjirnyjourney8756 Oh no sir you have not offended me whatsoever! I am sorry if it appeared that way. As far as rust issues, I would address that issue first. Use whatever you would like to use. On my old trucks, I give them a very good wash job, wax what I wanted to shine as much as possible, and then I apply Penetrol. There are other ways to apply Penetrol or Boiled Linseed Oil on your vehicle besides the way I do it so you might want to check out other people's channel so you will have the best results. Also I keep my trucks in a garage so they don't stay outside. If I was you, I would try Boiled Linseed Oil first. But that's my opinion. My trucks are kinda notbin the best of shape body wise so I am not that picky. Remember that if you plan on painting your vehicle anytime, then don't apply any of these products to your vehicle. Hope this is helpful to you! Good luck my friend!
