Thank you. Last winter, Florida, we had an unexpected freeze. It wiped out my plant. But when I trimmed it last autumn I stuck a couple of clippings in a box of dirt. I forgot all about it and it was a nice surprise when I found it leafing out. Now I will take extra care with it. 👍
Thank you for all the tips! I shall definitely follow them. I have planted Bougainvillea on my terrace just a month ago, and it has added wonderful colours to my garden.
I cut my Bougainvillea stems about 1/2 way in the Spring when the nights stay above 70° here in West Tx..then I put outside.....In S.Florida (that's my home) people have them growing like crazy and often use them on properties located by golf courses and Ive seen them used as extensive barrier hedges around their property lines as 6-8 ft high and 5-6 ft wide continuous landscape elements to stop broken windows by golf balls!...I have been in love with plants since I can remember and a horticulturist and in the landscape nursery field in my adult working life , growing up in a family of professional landscapers and lawn maintenance business owners...To fertilize gently at first in the Springtime ( ease into it!)Use HALF the recommended measure of soluble plant food ( I love "Super Bloom) per gallon to water the first month outside or so.All flowering plants ( That produce ornamental and vegetable inflourescences require a minimum of 6 to 8 hours of sun each day.In hot places (like TX!) towards mid June to maybe?(mid to late Oct) I always try to give my plants the benefit of a filtered shady light tree in the afternoon..like from 3 pm on..If you KNOW you have watered your pots recently or it has rained within 2-4 days.and your plants arecdrooping and seem to be wilting and stress around that time of day go ahead and give some shade then .But don't mistakenly think you must automatically throw on the water ..give them an hour or two to perk up and check the soul .a moisture meter is a Godsend. It is better to underwater your plantscthan over water- Always! Just watch them closely and feel the soil.Somee very important things regarding feeding bougainvillea..Choose a bloom waters soluble fertilizer and for your annuals and blooming perennials make sure to get one with a hi gh MIDDLE number...I.E.: - 24- 8...This number explains how many pounds of each element ( Nitrogen-Phosphorud-Potashin that order) there is in 100 lbs of the fertilizer.Nitrogen promotes foliage growth, phosphous promotes healthy stem/ reproduction \seeds growth- and potassium aids stem and all systems , roots and water movementsystems and chlorophyll production. What is most vital to me however is the need for Iron they're very hungry for..this deficiency shows as dark green veins on dull lackluster pale green or yellowing looking leaves...and a general non thriving in the plant...You can buy Chelated iron at garden centers but I don't bother- it stains surfaces like rusty iron does so use a reliable saucer under the pots.I buy a pound or two as needed of the cheapest most obviously iron made up common nails at the hardware store and put about a handful in a gallon of water in a milk jug. When they break down and rust they turn the water orange..be sure to shake it often.I water my roses and any other iron deficient ornamental with this rusty iron water in place of a watering once a month.Amazinly lush dark lovely foliageand the leave will quickly green up..DO Not trim isn't branches after the end of June..they flower on the tips and it will put energy into replacing those instead of flowering..I love this channel and I'm not trying to get in your shade either ..just love it when people can enjoy the love of wonderful and responsive living plants..they are amazing living things! I leave my pots of Bougainvilleas outside into THAT special day the weatherman say we will have our first night below 32°.....thats when I put them all inside the sunny den type room with the big windows. They will drop leaves and react to the change BUT remember to only water(no plant food) just enough to get them through the Winter in that unnatural situation. They do need a rest from the heavy flowering and stress to the plant that comes with the need to produce seed and procreate and the feeding we do to enjoy its beauty.
Very clear information. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. I just bought a white Bougainvillea today in Amsterdam and have it in my south facing window box. Have a nice day.
Very precise and accurate information about plants. .....good presentation too ! All your plants are so beautiful and well maintained ......so pretty !
I have this plant on my terrace garden and after few days of getting it from nursery we shifted it to lager container like ( 100lts blue drum with drainage holes ) we though usually this kind of plats grows larger when we see around the roads but thing is it started blooming recently but leafs of this plant are not looking healthy we stopped watering the plant as we thought may be its because of excess watering so what might be the reason and one more doubt is few bougainvillea I saw in places like Pondicherry they spread like creepers around the gates or on walls how is that and how can we do that ?? looking forward and thanks for sharing few tips
My bourgainvillea is in a pot on my very sunny terrace in Athens. It grows really well & is green all year round, but does not bloom. Because it's a climber, I put it in a very big pot to begin with. This was obviously a mistake, but I can't repot now. This was very helpful. Thank you.
I love bougainvilleas they are so easy to care. I live in hot and dry Arizona bougainvilleas loves it here. They can take 120 degrees. I have 3 Barbara Karst bougainvilleas they are my favorite of all.
Thank you Urban Gardener. Ive just started to follow your videos....theyre easy to follow... clear and straight to the point and great tips. Hey there! I'm new to gardening and i just got some Bougainvillea plants from a neighbor, it would be really helpful if you could tell me exactly do you mean by organic fertilizers. Thank you
I bought a bougainvillea plant a month ago and I've done miserably with it. I live in the middle east so keeping it outside dried up the leaves with all flowers fallen. I kept them inside my apartment with partial shade but I keep on loosing the flowers. What do you advice me?
i brought mine in during winter and now its spring and i do not see any life. The branch's are hard and dry, no sign of green stems...is it dead? does it have to be put out in the sun for to awake it?
Add diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer ...15 granules after every 15 days away from the main stem ...n water less ..water only when soil is completely dry
I was given a bougainvillea which has never been pruned. It has been kept inside in winter and put outside in summer. It is flowering right now- but the stems are about 20 feet long, after the owner just kept gathering the stems back and forth with clips. Even with all the doubling over, it is still about 8 feet long, and leaning over. How can I prune it properly now to get a round bush with shorter stems, without ruining its bloom and growth?

Hi I’m struggling with my bougainvilleas. It was blooming till last week and now it’s suddendly all dry. How can I retrieve it? I believe it’s not dead as a gardener came and checked the stem.
I think my husband was watering too much and from the top instead at the roots. Most of the flowers fell off. I told him only to water when the soil dry. Do you have any information that I need to know--I would appreciate it.
Keep the plants in full sun and water only when soil is completely dry..keep some gap between watering...after every 20 days add NPK 19:19:19 ( half table spoon per medium size plant)
Thanks for the good tips,my Bougainville plant has bloomed with leaves but no flowers, some of the leaves r also curled, what should I do now, plz reply.....

I got my plant from Home Depot and the water drains pretty well and the soil dries up pretty quickly. I know your not supposed to over water, how often should I be watering since the soil gets dried out pretty fast and I mean in a couple days?
Check drainage holes and cover them with small stones ...u can also add some perlite in the soil mix ..add water after 2 days or add daily in small quantity
ma'am leaves hai lakin bhaut small size ki hai iss variety mae jab bhi buds aatae hai toh saarae leaves drop ho jatae hai aur sirf buds n flowers hi reh jaatae hai ...kafi achcha lagta hai dekh ke ..:)
I am completely uneducated when it comes to gardening...my mother gave me a couple of her bougainvillea plants-no flowers but some leaves. I'm not sure if it's dying out or if I can revive it somehow? Maybe its just not it time to bloom?? What should I do to get it to bloom? I live in FL and it's planted outside on a trellis. Any tips will be much appreciated.
hello..:) thanks for writing..:) bougainvillea are very hardy plants n they need very little care ..:) for blooms keep the plant in full sun ..they need at least 4-6 hrs of sunlight daily n after every 20 days fertilize the plant with organic compost or NPK fertilizer rich in phosphorous n potassium content.....remove the dead flower sticks from the plant after plant has finished flowering....and one important tip ..do not over water your plant as it will lead to foliage growth ..add water after every 2 days or when ever soil feels dry to touch . good luck happy gardening..:)
thanks a lot for your informative video. My bougainvillea have reduced flowering. Am I over-watering them? if I don't water them frequently the leaves wilt - once they are watered though, they look fresh and perky again. Appreciate your advice please.
Overwatering will cause the plants to develop leaves instead of flowers......keep some gap between watering ....but during hots day u can water daily in small proportions ...after every 6-8 days dig the upper layer of the soil(gudai) to help the plant in it's growth .....for blooms u can add DAP diammonium phosphate after every 18-20 (15-16 granules per plant ...just place the granules under the soil 6-8 inches away from the main stem
@@urbangardeningofficial thanks so much for the advice. Yes its very hot now in Sri Lanka so all plants need watering daily. No idea where to buy DAP here though. Will ask around. Thanks again and best wishes.

Thank you for the info! You make it sound so easy.... I'm hoping my bougainvillea will make it through the winter, I live in Zone 9 (California) and will most likely need to bring it in the garage during the colder winter months.
Liz S thank u ma'am for such a beautiful comment 😊🤗🤗 in winters keep the pot in a location where it can get some indirect light .....you can place it near the window 😊🤗🤗 tc happy gardening
If you water you Bougainville more frequently than it will produce more leaves instead of flowers...so water less ..water only when soil drys out ..take care
Dont give much water put it the plnt in direct good sunlight cutting is very must and use fertilizers.same was hapening with my bouganvillia but now its floweting so well. U can use npk fertilizer.
can you tell me where is your location? Is it warm all year around? I have to bring my pot indoors here in NY. It just started to bloom for the first time after months of sunny hot summer. The sun exposure will soon lessen as we approach Dec. that is when it starts to drop its blooms and stop growing. This is my problem..how do i treat it to keep alive till Spring?
hi..:) i am from north India ..at this time we are having winters and it will last till February end... during winters you can keep the pot inside if the outside temperature is below 0 degree Celsius ...in my area/city minimum temp is 6-8 degree Celsius...so we keep the pot in the same location outside throughout the year...you can use grow lights or you can place them near a sunny window where they can get some light to keep them alive for the next season...:) good luck
I have 3 bougainvillea shrubs on my terrace in 7 to 9 inches of soil....i have cut it into a square manicured shape ...i do pruning every 15 days ..but no flowers yet...please help....i can send u photographs also...
after every 15 days why??? let them grow first...prune ur plants after they have finished flowering ....let them grow n soon flowers will come...keep ur plants in full sun ..tc
Thank you so much.. I prune it to maintain the square shape of the shrub... Its in the terrace soil and not in a movable pot. But whole day sunlight is an issue...it receives maybe 2 hrs of sunlight but lots of heat...also i do not water it often. can u inbox me ur whatsapp no so that i can send u some pictures...my email id is drdurba@gmail.com

pooja sital thanks for your comment. 😊😊 keep the plants in full sun they need atleast 5-6 hrs of sunlight daily to produce beautiful bloom and water them only when top layer of soil feels dry to touch....more water will force leafy growth instead of blooms so water less and keep them in full...n add phosphorus rich fertilizer after every 20-25 days for better growth n more blooms...tc happy gardening
Make sure they are in direct sunlight... They need 5-7 hours of sunlight daily...and after every 30 days add phosphorus n potassium rich fertilizer for flowering

Scratch the stem A little... If it is green from the inside than ur plant 🌱is alive... They need direct sunlight for thr proper growth n flowering
My Bougainville is giving very small flowers. What to do? It has many drainage holes.
Add diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer ...15 granules after every 15 days away from the main stem ...n water less ..water only when soil is completely dry

My plant is in sunlight in balcony but i have ac machine in balcony too. Is it affecting the flowering? My plant is not flowering but growing leaves
Can you grow BV from cuttings/ and how?
can you tell me where is your location?
But whole day sunlight is an issue...it receives maybe 2 hrs of sunlight but lots of heat...also i do not water it often.
can u inbox me ur whatsapp no so that i can send u some pictures...my email id is drdurba@gmail.com

hi, how can i Let nu bouganvillea let bloom fast in a pot?
pooja sital thanks for your comment.
Very helpful
Madam, I made a mistake. I bought the bougainvilleas from nursery and repotted in big pots. Now I watched your video. What to do? It is not flowering.
madam????

Great video! I’m live in Puerto Rico and there are so many varieties of bougainvillea but for some reason I can’t get mine to grow flowers.
Make sure they are in direct sunlight... They need 5-7 hours of sunlight daily...and after every 30 days add phosphorus n potassium rich fertilizer for flowering
Urban Gardening They are in sunlight all day for sure. However I have not added fertilizer. Thanks so much for replying.
