My dad bought plant and I had no idea what it was. I have no experience with plants, but he planted this right outside by my room and I was tired of seeing it hug the wall. Now that I saw this video, I’m so happy that the outside of my room is the wall that the bougainvillea can grow on!!!
1/4/2016 happy new year. This is the nicest Bog I've ever seen. a total WOW factor. I live in S. Florida and these are everywhere. pink, red, white, a VERY cool looking Yellow and shabby kind of orange and many people have them in their yard. this is the Tropics and they grow and flower all year long. 95% the homeowners keep them cut WAY back to only 5 or 6 feet tall because of the 3" thorns. a neighbor has one that's 12 - 15 feet tall. it grew straight up and looks like a huge pink fountain. everything grows out of center and hangs all the way down. it's very nice.
Hi +Nunya Biznis & Happy New Year to you! My Bougainvillea is colorful most of the year, that's for sure. I've gotten used to pruning it & can usually avoid being scratched. Yes, it's a total WOW when in full bloom. I love it when the bougies do that arching "thing" too - so pretty. Nell
This video is 7 years old and i presume you are so far ahead in your gardening journey I just started last year so wish me luck 👍 This monsoon i planted around 30 different varieties of Bougainvillea When it blooms I'll post it 👍 Happy days 😀
You're not alone. Was just shopping at Lowes and seen this tall beautiful bloom flower on a trellis and didn't know what it was, just knew it was nice looking, so I purchased it. When I gotten home and kept it outside trying to figure out where to place it the weather started to change to fall. The leaves fell off the tree pretty quick and became bear. I was ok with it, this will give me time to figure out where to plant it in the front year next year 2024. I've done so much research on this boganvillea and seen so many ideas and decorations where I can put it and look nice at the same time. Can't wait for the weather to break so I can explore this boganivillae.
Wow, absolutely beautiful! I am so glad I found this video. I’ve been growing Bougainvilleas for years, but in San Diego climate. I am determined to have success here in zone 9a, so far so good. Inspiring!!
Beyond beautiful! A tall order to aspire for my fledgling staked bougainvillea. Newly acquired in a pot and transplanted under a front window that gets lots of afternoon sun. About three weeks, no new growths, much less flower bracts but I'm encouraged that it's holding its own.
Well thank you! mjd I look at it many times a day & still love it. Bougainvilleas can be a little slow to take off so be patient. Plus, they don't like to have their roots disturbed (they actually prefer to be planted grow pot & all) so it's just settling in. Plus, they love sun & heat. I hope your bougainvillea brings you a lot of color too! Best, Nell
Wow.....I recently became a bougainvillea dad an looking for ways to encourage bloom and this is the first video that popped up . new subbie here .great job
I have several question....Did you plant this bougainvillea? What size gallon did it come in? How old is this bougainvillea? You said that you hardly water your bougainvillea. I live in texas and sometimes my bougainvillea looks super thirsty after 1 week of not watering it. How come yours can go so long without water?
Hi, I have such bougie envy for the way the plants in Phoenix and California look compared to mine here in Tampa. Seems with all the rain here they just never attain the same appeal as out west, and are always growing like mad.
Bougainvilleas love it on the dry side +Phil K (pk33617) Even with our severe drought here in CA, mine are still blooming away like crazy. You have many wonderful plants that we can't grow here. You can send some of that rain our way, we need it! Nell
I need help! Please show how to actually do one area of your beautiful plant instead of telling us about it. I tend to learn by watching. For instance, getting the plant pruned, pick one area and finish it on video as you describe pls. Pinching one or two the pruning one branch doesn’t show me how to do an entire area. Your plant is huge but you could pick one area and prune/pinch it all. Mine is in a pot. Zone 8a. It is same type as yours. My brachs are strange in that sometimes theyre white and turn pink, sometimes they remain variate colors of white/light pink/dark pink, and sometimes they come out all white, and sometime all dark pink. This is one plant that does this. I have been bringing the pot indoors for it to go dormant in winter for past three years. However this year fire ants have made a home in the soil and I don’t want to bring the pot indoors bc I’m allergic to the ant sting. I’m afraid I might loose my plant if I leave it out. Temps this weekend are low of 38-43 degrees. It warms in afternoon to 50-70. Our fall has crazy variants of temperature weekly. I could put it in the garage but I’m still afraid of the ants coming out. I heard if you put it inside to go dormate that it needs no sun?? I do have a UV light that I used on it in the garage last year bc I hadn’t heard no sun was ok. Any suggestions?? Thanks Jules
Your bouganvillea looks beautiful, but don't just show us the end result after you've pruned it. We're learners here, we want you to see you prune it as you're doing it. I know its hard to talk and prune at the same time, but I'd like you to explain it as you're doing it. Thank you for a lovely video!
I have one growing over an arbour and it is very dense. So should I cut a lot of it out? It doesn’t flower very often probably due to it being so dense?
The one that I bought from the home center was covered with blooms, but now it is completely green and I can see that it has a lot of branches. Since I’m growing it in a metal bucket it needs a prune to stay manageable.🌸
I am not an expert but am having the same problem and I read that that happens if they get too much water and too much nitrogen. So am gonna try a different fertilizer this year. Hope yours is blooming in the meantime!
I had a HUGE hedge in front of the house and it was quite overgrown. It was about 3m tall perhaps higher. Now i wanted it to be cut to about 1m height but the gardener said do it a bit lower. Now he cut it back to the base about 30cm. It had branches about 5-7cm thick.... it looked horrible!!! But now its starting to grow again, 1 of them did die sadly. BUt how far back should i prune all the branches? i was thinking about 50-70cm or so? I live in the Caribbean and i watered it once a week. Then i read its better to water it less so i stopped doing that. I noticed some branch just simply snapped off??? Not sure why that is. I know nothing about gardening by the way. I have no idea what to do?
*HELP!!!!* lol....@3:51...Do we need to trim away all those little "toothpicks" where the bracts were? We have a lot of them where the bracts have fallen off and hubby says those "toothpicks" are dead. Thus, we need to trim them away. I think he's crazy. We have quite a few of them. But I say, it'd be madness to trim away all those tiny-little individual toothpicks! We have a whole wall of them! (To be clear: I can see trimming branches...yes....but! not individual toothpicks?!?) Sorry, I keep calling them toothpicks...not sure what they're exactly called.) What say ye, Nell? (You're our Judge Judy on this subject! lol) Sylvia in San Diego. 😎 P.S. If I'm wrong...I soooo will NOT show him this comment and your response. If HE'S WRONG...I will DEFINITELY be showing him this! hahaha.. 🤣
It looks like your pinching new growth. BTW, it would not to be expected for some of us who do not have the weather your Bougie's enjoy. I prune and yet no flowers with lots of sun, but potted. Cannot grow in dirt cause of cold temps of fall and winter
Thanks you for sharing your beautiful Bougainvillea. What do you recommend for a Bougainvillea that is 3 yrs old, flowers nicely but isn't growing in height well? I have a Bougainvillea planted next to this particular plant that towers almost 10ft but the short one is only about 2ft high and both were planted at the same time.
We have 6 very large and old bougainvilleas on our new property, the HOA landscapers have trimmed then into very tight round balls. I want a more natural look. What are your suggestions?
Hi Jon - I recently moved into a new home where 1 of the 4 bougainvilleas had been hedged over the years. Here's what I did to open it up: www.joyusgarden.com/getting-bougainvillea-bloom/ Hope that helps, Nell
I live in Ventura and I bought 2 plants about 2 years ago had them on my deck then combined the 2 into a corner of our backyard...the plant is healthy and very GREEN I need help! Is there anyway I can send you a picture of it?
Where are you located? It seems your bougainvillea doesn't have any thorns. Here in Southern AZ, I have bougainvillea vines that are very thorny. How often you water yours?
I live in the San Diego area. My bougainvillea sometimes looks gorgeous, but then the bracts (I think you called them) all turn brown and dry up and eventually fall off and/or get stuck in the bush. And I have to clean them out - which is a pain - literally - because of the thorns. What can I do to stop that - or make it occur less often? Also, I am thinking the soil around the base probably doesn't have good drainage - so maybe I should dig around base and make for better drainage.
Hi Mark - The papery thin colored bracts turn brown as time goes on, it's just part of the cycle of the bloom. Because bougies are dense growing, the bracts get caught inside the plant. This happens with my B. glabra because it flowers so much. The only way to stop that is to stop the flowering. Nell
Well, don't want to stop the flowering. But is it normal for them to all do it at once? Then the plant looks like it is almost dead. So then I trim of the parts that look dead. Then it grows back and looks gorgeous. So I guess what I am asking is it possible to have different branches on different cycles so some are beautiful while others are brown? I hate that ALL branches go brown at the same time. Thanks.
Hi Mark - Yes, in my experience bougainvilleas put out a big bloom at once. You could try the different branch thing, but because they blooms heaviest when it's the warmest & sunniest, I'm not sure if you could get the timing down. Because they bloom on new growth, you could try pruning or tipping some of the plant & letting the other part or parts go for awhile. Nell
Thank you. Also, now that I know they like sandy and slightly acidic soil, that may help shorten the down time. Oh - and that I shouldn't water them too much! I was doing exactly the wrong thing by watering more.
Such a beautiful bougainvillea! May I know which country are you from and how cold can you get during winter? I live here in the Western part of France and our bougainvillea stays inside the house the whole year. We only put it out in summer to get some fresh air and real sun. Thank you so much!
+JoyUsGarden I live in India so its a warm place... how often should I water it? I planted two small saplings 3 days ago under the shade of a large tree. the saplings receive around 2 hrs of direct sunlight... is this ok? Debraj.
That's ok while they're rooting +debraj sarkar but you definitely want to give them a lot more sun once they've rooted. Give them a good watering about once a week - you don't want the saplings to dry out nor do you want to rot them out either. Nell
Check out Burke's Backyard video on this as he has a total other perspective on looking after Boganvillea: Treat em mean, keep em keen. This turned out very beautiful though, sounds like the tip pruning was key for you!
Yes +Sunnycoast Klips because they bloom on new wood, the tip pruning brings out maximum color for me. And, we are in the midst of a severe drought & I haven't supplementally watered my bougies for 4 years. Last year we only had a little under 5 inches of rain all year. Now those are tough plants - hardly any water, no fertilizers or feeding & looking good! Nell
wow!! how you make that much flowers in that bougainville?? (exploded into colour??really)I understand that flowers bloom on new woods..so just need to prune the new leaves as you said???sorry if i get it wrong..
No worries +Bessen Kuruvilla Philip Yes, Bougainvilleas flower on new growth & that is why the older ones have all the color at the ends. I keep mine pruned & pinched so that the show of color is much more dense. It's a riot of color! Nell
+JoyUsGarden Thanks for the reply Nell...I planted a bougainville for bonsai the other day..not sure if it works. But have a fully grown plant in mom's garden, need to work on it though as i'm not sure which type of bougainville that is. Will ask you if I come up with any doubts :D That bougainville of yours is a visual treat for the viewers :)
Hi +Bessen Kuruvilla Philip I just filmed a couple of vids on Bougainvilleas so stay tuned for those coming up soon. Bougies make great bonsais by the way, which was a bit surprising to me the 1st time I saw one! Nell
You're so welcome! +Maha bent Abdulaziz I never had bougainvilleas before I moved into this house so I learned how to prune from hands on experience. We all start somewhere, so happy gardening! Nell
I wish you were in the Caribbean to help me with mines...I am having a littletrouble with mines...I bought the plant it's still in the pot...SO you said to get maximum flowering all I have to do is cut the tips....What happen is I bought a few of them but when I bought them they all had flowers nowww about lets say 3 months after some of them all the flowers are GONE!!!
I love the Caribbean! By the way, I just moved to a new home with 3 bougainvilleas. They go through periods in which they flower & then they don't. Trim the tips & make sure they get lots of sun. Nell
Nell Thanks a million...THANKS...When I bought them I made sure and asked the gentleman if they always had flowers because I feel a yard should always have plants with Flowers and he told me Yesss he said they always have flowers 12 months in the year...I bought about 4 of them Nowwww The only one that has flowers is the Biggest one in the pot all the rest the flowers are gone!!!...I even feel like throwing them away because it's the flowers is what is the Real Beauty...Do you know how long they will not bare flowers???...Our Yard looks so Empty now without the flowers.
I just pruned it again so there will be another couple of Bougie videos coming up soon. +Anastasia “Annie” Wahalatantiri I don't do much to it & it grows & flowers like crazy! Nell
I live in Sri Lanka (tropical country) where these grow wild in many colours and verity.May be because it is everywhere we notice it less. We should attempt to do and take care of what God has given us with more respect I suppose. I myself have about 7 different varieties in pots but they don't flower like yours :)
Yes, there are many, many Bougainvilleas here in Santa Barbara. +Anastasia “Annie” Wahalatantiri Even though I see a lot of them, I still like them - such pops of color! Nell
Hi, please assist, I have 3 beautiful Bougainvillea in separate pots on my deck. The one flowers beautifully and the one flowers sporadically and the one had 4 buds and nothing for the last 4 months. I water once a week a very small amount as the weather is around 35 degrees Centigrade, can someone please help me to get them to bloom like you see on shows
Yup ive seen other videos where they say not to prune them at all because it causes them to grow leaves and not flowers. Only prune if you need to control its growth and to remove any disease.
How much water do bougainvillea need? I usually water about twice a week, but then it rained REALY hard and heavy for two days a few weeks ago (Corona CA), and the flowers basically fell off. Now I'm trying to bring them back.
Bougainvilleas need a deep watering every 7-14 days when young & getting established. This will vary depending on the amount of sun & heat. francesgum The 1 that you see in the video has not been supplementally watered for 3 years now. I'm in Santa Barbara, not too far north of you. They are considered to be very drought tolerant. Hope that helps! Nell
Hey Nell! I bought a bougainvillea a month ago and slowly the flower/bracts dropped. i then proceeded to prune/pinch the plant. Will it flower again this year?
Don’t water the leaves when you water this plant 🙂 Leaves drop when you water leaves, water the dirt surrounding it and not too often. Rain is fine, they are pretty tolerant. Don’t plant in the shade.
Beautiful tree but gave zero help on pruning bougainvillea trees. Most people don't start out with a tree of that size and if you already have a tree that size the maintenance is pretty straightforward....
Less talking about your bougainvillea and more showing how to actually trim and prune and pinch would have actually been helpful. No all of us have a tree size bougainvillea we just need to know how to take care of it
Hi +jess joseph de ocampo The 1 you see in the video is very established - over 20 years old. I haven't supplementally watered it in 3 years & we haven't gotten much winter rain here in CA the last few years. It's still in bloom in late Nov. A tough plant!
I mean how often do you prune ? We have three potted bougainvilleas, they are about 9 months old, they have bloomed on me last october and november :) i live in a tropical country. Now the flowers are mosltly dead but there are still some new ones starting to grow from new wood. Can i do tipping on them right after the blooms die or should i let them grow some more??? Thanks :)
I do 1 big pruning every year in mid-winter +jess joseph de ocampo & 3 or 4 smaller ones thoughout the year. Bougies are tough so you can do the tipping right after the blooms fade, even if the plants are young. Hope that helps! Nell
My dad bought plant and I had no idea what it was. I have no experience with plants, but he planted this right outside by my room and I was tired of seeing it hug the wall. Now that I saw this video, I’m so happy that the outside of my room is the wall that the bougainvillea can grow on!!!

hell yeah beautiful
what specie of bugambilia is that
Should we prune the new growths too ?
How do you prune the top? It looks pretty tall, so assuming you'd need a ladder. Pretty labor intensive, yes?
I live in Canada Vancouver .is it too cool to grow out door?

Hi - You could have 1 of the dwarf varieties of bougainvillea. Some only get 2-3' tall. Nell
Ok it makes sense now, I have two plants that are the same color and dwarf height. Thank you!!!
Sure thing!
beautiful. wow. gorgeous. i have my own 2 small plants i hope they are going to be as beautiful as yours
I have 6 buganvillia in the ground that are six months old. When do I prune them.

How to make bougainvillea bloom again after a weeks of raining? Im from philippines
What is that colour called ? Beautiful
So beautiful
This was helpful. Thank you!
Why is my bougainvillea not blooming. Growing lots of green leaves.
On West side of house.
I live in the San Diego area. My bougainvillea sometimes looks gorgeous, but then the bracts (I think you called them) all turn brown and dry up and eventually fall off and/or get stuck in the bush. How old is your Bougainvillea? it´s very pretty
So beautiful your bougainvillea
Great info..thx 4 sharing 🙏🏽
a spectacular bloom!
Very nice Bugainvillea I like it
Your bougainvillea is gorgeous. How old is that tree?

She lives in Santa Barbara, California, where it only might get 1-2 frosts/year. Beautiful weather year round!
Your's a devilishly flowering machine! I'd like to know how can I get my one to flower as much as possible?
Yes, it's downright delightfully devilish! +debraj sarkar Give it lots of sun & warmth & prune & pinch it, just like I did in this video. Nell
Nell
+JoyUsGarden ok thanks!
Nell
Thank u so much. I'm a beginner and u taught me a lot. I'm looking forward to make my garden blooming with beautiful flowers. (:
You're so welcome! +Maha bent Abdulaziz I never had bougainvilleas before I moved into this house so I learned how to prune from hands on experience. We all start somewhere, so happy gardening! Nell
JoyUsGarden how to graft bugenvillia
Thanks dear for sharing. It is beautiful! My mum had one.
You're very welcome. I have 4 at my new home, all coming into bloom right now. Nell
is pruning bougainvillea stimulate it to produce more flower ?
Yes, and she says on her website that less watering also promotes blooming.
Nell
Nell Thanks a million...THANKS...When I bought them I made sure and asked the gentleman if they always had flowers because I feel a yard should always have plants with Flowers and he told me Yesss he said they always have flowers 12 months in the year...I bought about 4 of them Nowwww The only one that has flowers is the Biggest one in the pot all the rest the flowers are gone!!!...I even feel like throwing them away because it's the flowers is what is the Real Beauty...Do you know how long they will not bare flowers???...Our Yard looks so Empty now without the flowers.
wow!! that looks awesome. Wish my plants would grow like that :(
I just pruned it again so there will be another couple of Bougie videos coming up soon.
Nell
Love the nasturtium!
Nice information
How old is this tree?
Hi, please assist, I have 3 beautiful Bougainvillea in separate pots on my deck. The one flowers beautifully and the one flowers sporadically and the one had 4 buds and nothing for the last 4 months. I water once a week a very small amount as the weather is around 35 degrees Centigrade, can someone please help me to get them to bloom like you see on shows
Hi - Are they all the same species or variety? Nell
When I prune my bougainvillea it grows back with big leaves, mean thorns and no blooms.
Bougainvilleas bloom best under arid conditions. Too much water translates to few or no blooms but give you more leaves.
Ahmed Ali Albabkri yes this is a dry-ish plant. Very drought resistant.
Yup ive seen other videos where they say not to prune them at all because it causes them to grow leaves and not flowers. Only prune if you need to control its growth and to remove any disease.
Woww..its beautiful.n helpful video..
Nell
Not much help for those of us that don't enjoy tropical temperatures year round, but those that do that is probably helpful.
please tell about frtilizr
Thank you, Nell. I will bite the bullet, so to speak, and start pruning. But first, I need to get rid of the mealy bugs :(
Hey Nell!
I bought a bougainvillea a month ago and slowly the flower/bracts dropped. i then proceeded to prune/pinch the plant. Will it flower again this year?
Don’t water the leaves when you water this plant 🙂
Leaves drop when you water leaves, water the dirt surrounding it and not too often. Rain is fine, they are pretty tolerant. Don’t plant in the shade.
Beautiful!
Looks great, thanks for sharing!
Well thank you Brown Thumbs It's my pleasure to share - stay tuned because lots more videos are coming your way! Happy gardening, Nell
beautiful
Love your video! Thank you for all the tips!
You're most welcome cfef86. Be sure to check out my other bougainvillea videos too! Nell
Wow it is I M AFRAID to cut my bougainvilla but now am not
wow
Would have been good if she had defined what a “tip prune is”
She did, she shared it is another name for pinching off
Very helpful thank you so much!
You're very welcome & thanks for watching Shelly! Nell
Good work mam, from India
so beautiful!
Thank you! +Lily Navallo Calara It's a lot of color! Nell
the blooms are awesome but I did not learn anything. you need to actually SHOW what and where and when to prune.
Thank you !
Thank you my bougainville is very branchy I will trim accordingly..
You're welcome +pierrebrseven Mine are due for their big winter pruning soon. Nell
beautyfull plant👌
😍😍😍😍
WOOOW
amazing
It's a big bloomer. Nell
how old is your plant
It's about 15-20 years old. Nell
Beautiful tree but gave zero help on pruning bougainvillea trees. Most people don't start out with a tree of that size and if you already have a tree that size the maintenance is pretty straightforward....
how to graft bougainvillea video upload
Hi Muhammad - I've never grafted bougainvillea so I'd have to do a trial run 1st. Thanks for the suggestion. Nell
Thanks??? --- It's beautiful no doubt but I really didn't learn anything

Barely hear you.
Less talking about your bougainvillea and more showing how to actually trim and prune and pinch would have actually been helpful. No all of us have a tree size bougainvillea we just need to know how to take care of it
She is probably pronouncing it correctly but I prefer the other way lol
Person seems to think people can read her mind. DUH.
how often do you water???
Nell
