Toss your turnips in salt after cutting and let them sit in a strainer for 30 minutes it will pull the bitterness out. Just make sure to rinse the salt off before cooking.
AmyBEgirl I won’t eat them without doing it, I have a video for loaded turnip soap a low carb baked potato soup alternative. Lmao it’s my only video I made it for my keto parents.
Papa G, thank you so much for taking time to share with all of us on Keto!! I especially appreciate it! YUM! YUM! Taste just like scalloped potatoes. I make 1/2 the recipe and it was approx. 3/4 for 3 people. I made in the Foodi Air Fryer Digital Oven. 2 layers, a smaller casserole dish, set on AirFryer mode, temp to 375 F, and cooked for 20 mins....checked 1/2 way thru. No foil on top and browned so pretty!!
I made this yesterday and the cheese sauce is just amazing! The turnips had the texture of potatoes. There were a couple bitter bits but most likely, that was due to bad trimming on my part. It's a rich dish. Amazing recipe. Thanks!
OK without sounding as weird as this is going to sound...I want you to come live at our house and TALK...yup cooking is a plus but man I can't be the only person that would watch you just to relax to your voice! I'm going to try this...just subbed to your channel! xoxo
Just made these and they are absolutely delicious!!! Thank you so much for this recipe. 😃 my husband will be so happy, he has been missing scalloped potatoes 👍🙂
Thank you for this! My Mom always added turnips to her mashed potatoes. I am not sure if it was just to stretch a meal for eight people or not but everyone loved it. I can not wait to try this!
For sure going to try this! I'll add some cubed ham, as that's how I grew up eating scalloped taters.. maybe that's a Midwest thing? :) Also the suggestion from one commenter to toss in some spinach is intriguing!
Thank you! I'm grain free and been cutting out potatoes due to other health reasons. This looks amazing. It'll be the side I make for Thanksgiving with family this year.
Thank you for this creative culinary delight. Looks absolutely delicious and savory. Wow!!! a great way to use turnips. Thank you for the tip on removing outer edge of turnip to get rid of bitterness. I love learning new information that is helpful. Love Tamson 😇💚
I LOVE turnips! Great idea to make a gratin with them, I missed that. Real comfort food. I used to put anchovies in my potato gratin sometimes, wonder if that’d work with turnips? Kind of a take on Janssens Temptation recipe.

well I was making these for dinner tonight. i got the turnips peeled and started slicing them with a mandolin. with the safety shield. And somehow i still ended up in urgent care missing part of my thumb. lol I came home and threw away my slicer. I will be ordering a good food processor with a slicing attachment. Until then i will be using a knife and a slice proof glove. I can't wait to actually try this.
Well, who are the two turnip haters that gave it a 👎? Papa G's Low Carb Recipes Made it. My husband had no idea. I don’t think I got enough of the edge off though, as it had a little “off” taste. Just saw a comment about how to remedy that. Great recipe!
Halved the recipe as it's just the two of us. So glad I did as it is very rich! Husband doesn't care for scalloped potatoes but enjoyed this version. So so good!
I love most of your recipes and this looks like it would be really good. But I would love to try it out with a different vegetable like maybe jicama or radish or something more mild. I grew Burpees new white turnip this year for my husband who loves turnips. They were advertised as almost tasting like biting into an apple. They were delicious. But for me hours later I had awful gastric distress. My husband had no such reaction. So I guess turnips are out for me but the ingredients transfer over to another vegetable I’m sure.
Wow...turnips as a potato substitute. Could you mash them I wonder? I'm thinking shepherds pie and moussaka😋 Excellent idea thankyou. I've never even considered turnips as something I'd want to eat but I never thought I'd go lie carb either 👍
thank you for your great recipe! I have been doing non potato recipes to get my husband on track with his sugar. I cut out white sugar, wheat flour and potato's and got him off of his meds in 3 months. We eat potato's once in a while but turnips are a great alternative. I will try them in the air fryer for fries. Thanks again!
Papa G thank you so much for this recipe! Scalloped potatoes are one of my most favorite side dishes! I'm sure I will loves these too. Adding turnips to my shopping list now! Love your detailed videos! Thank you very much! So, I have a question that's not relevant to this recipe....my husbands name is Gary and he loves your coffee cup! Do you know if/where I could possibly get him one for his birthday next one? Thank you!

Papa G I am showing my city side here and shamefully admitting that I have never had turnips, in fact have never seen a turnip my whole life. (I know, this and many other things I don't know about make my new country farmer raised husband take fits of laughter.) So yesterday I searched our two supermarkets and two farmers market for turnips. All had empty shelves where the "turnip greens" usually are but that's as far as I got. So my questions are #1 are they out of season right now? #2 I am assuming the GREENS ain't gonna be attached to no turnip when I find them, right? I want to make this recipe SOOOO badly. Help a country transplant out please. Oh and I totally agree with the woman who wants you to live with them just to talk (Although I would like you to cook also here) because your voice is so soothing and honestly when I think I am messing a dish up your voice keeps me calm. It's kind of like Wilson, we never see you but your wisdom is delivered at such a comforting way. (ok maybe I have overthought this a little, lol) Thanks Papa G!
Hi Stacy. Turnip and turnip greens are different parts of the same vegetable. The turnip is the root portion (underground) and the greens grow above ground. They should be available year round, but are more plentiful in the spring and fall periods. This may help a bit... www.berkeleywellness.com/healthy-eating/food/article/turnips-and-rutabagas-rich-complex-carbohydrates Thank you for the kind words and best of luck finding that illusive turnip.

This is INCREDIBLY rich, so much so that my wife couldn't eat it. Cream, sour cream, cheese, more cheese, and cheese, with a little turnip thrown in. I liked it just fine, but I have a high tolerance for fatty and rich foods. If you haven't yet made it and are thinking of doing so, be aware that if you follow Kimmy's advice to let the turnip sit in salt for half an hour you have to start peeling the turnips a good three hours before you want to eat.
Omgoodness I❤you for this recipe Papa G! Looks delicious and so easy. I've never eaten a turnip in my life but now I can't wait to try one😊😊 ❤your channel👍👍
You can use cheddar, but it tends to release oil when cooked at high temp or for a long time (that's why you don't often see it on pizza). Try gouda, provolone, mozzerella, monterey jack, etc.
