Nilas Thomsen Yeah, he'd written a few of his best jokes by then. Actually in another video he says how he looks back on this performance (I think it was this one) and says he was really nervous.
Yeah he did. Except that he kept using these jokes for years to come. Not that everyone else doesn't do that, just saying. But, the jokes were hilarious still, and to have so many great and original jokes at such an early stage is saying something
People who are saying he has improved so much since then, I think it depends on your taste. This is a masterpiece and I believe the funniest set he's ever done (that I've seen). His style of delivery has changed but I prefer this style personally.
I know what you're saying but there are so many comedians now that have an empty pally conversational style. I liked the fact that he was a bit sneery and 'above it all'. Hard to explain but he is a great comic today too!
I can't believe I found this - I fell in love with Jimmy Carr the second he came out with his fattist joke - absolutely brilliant comedian and been at the top ever since.
@LemmensSteven - by 'someone' it could either mean one different person rings Admiral insurance every 6 seconds or that ONE person (a nutter) is ringing them every 6 seconds.
I like that Jimmy has experimented in recent times and sort of... opened up somewhat, he's loosened up hugely and interacts a lot now... But I prefer this standoffish, in-character approach. I think he should stay in persona completely, make it a complete act and be as consistently biting and witty as possible, I'm not normally the biggest fan of one-liner comedians but he's brilliant with it.
I prefer him now, quicker, energetic, warm, heckler friendly, witty and if anything, more daring. Plus he seems nervous to me here. Not relaxed enough. He's even said around this time in his career he was too stiff and still.
He seems to stumble a bit but i think he says: "A lot of people come to an important benefit gig like this and they don't bother to learn any material..." (Then reads his notes....)
Actually thecassman got it completely wrong. What he actually said was the complete opposite - "A lot of people come to an important benefit gig like this and they bother to learn their material". He then looks at his notes to indicate that he HASN'T bothered to learn his material - therein lies the joke.
Indeed, it is relative. I meant it a) in that he sounds posher than he does in his more recent stuff, but that may partially be because his delivery is a little more... stilted? deadpan? that he is now, and b) in a nice way, because I luff Jimmy Carr lots and lots. Apparently my comment got misinterpreted as a jibe at him, though ;_;
Don't think it is the Royal Variety mate. He doesn't now to the royal box after and his material isn't tame enough - he is really restricted when he performs at the RV sadly.
Can someone please tell me what he says at the end of the sentence at 1:04? (English isn't my mother tongue). "A lot of people come to an important benefit gig like this, and then they ...(???)"
About the the part where if you're a single guy asking a girl out, in which she responds "I love you like a brother", what did Jimmy reply to that? Could not catch that
'Don't panic I'm not shit'
Good start for an epic comedian. It's easy to see how much he's improve since then.
"Don't worry - I'm not shit."
Excellent in this!
Proof he does not have to be extremely sexual with his material to get terrific laughs.
His delivery is much better now, though
No, just a little bit sexual 😂
If I had a pound for every pixel in this video, I'd be in debt
Just saw his Royal Variety performance from 2013. Such a huuuugggee difference in confidence and overall energy man. But he's still awesome.
He's such a good joke teller
His timming is god-like..
Thats kinda his job description...
ThePianoMan1999 They’re called ‘Comedians’ 😂
Can't believe this was 18 years ago!! Still brilliant!!
Sounds incredibly posh in this show
Posh prick.
Well if the title's correct, this is one from his early years
because he had an education
Like Michael McIntyre
The telephone voice! Jimmy was so posh before! 😂
Legendary
Well that is only your opinion, this guy brought me nothing but laughter.
How much more softly spoken he used to be.
He hasn't changed 😂
oh god i remember seeing this, bring backs good funny memories

I love how 4:43 looks like an empty theater. He's just talking to himself and someone felt bad for him and started playing a laugh track.
I know what you're saying but there are so many comedians now that have an empty pally conversational style. I liked the fact that he was a bit sneery and 'above it all'. Hard to explain but he is a great comic today too!
the best ive ever seen him!!!
I can't believe I found this - I fell in love with Jimmy Carr the second he came out with his fattist joke - absolutely brilliant comedian and been at the top ever since.
Thanks for this.
No matter how many times I watch this it makes me laugh 😂 😂😂😂
That's his first? Man he's great!
His first and best gig. His delivery is so cold and detached and his material is fantasticly biting.
and that was the birth of a legend
Impeccable timing
Sometimes his punchlines are too soft and quick for old untuned US ears
This is very much....much...later. thank you.
He absolutely nailed it.
It's interesting to note how his delivery has changed over the years.
god i love him!
What a fuckin' star, love him xx
This is from Peter Cooks memorial not the Royal Variety Performance
I think he has definitely got funnier since then, and generally more likeable :)
His early stand up stuff reminds me so much of Miles Jupp - even sounds the same!
@LemmensSteven - by 'someone' it could either mean one different person rings Admiral insurance every 6 seconds or that ONE person (a nutter) is ringing them every 6 seconds.
He looks like the next superman and such a nice guy untill he speaks xD love this dude
Thanks :) Yeah, Mads Roar Løland missed "don't" when he wrote it for me, so... now I get it ;)
Gosh he was quite tame when he started off in 2002
If your worried about foul language and such, why did you click on a Jimmy Carr video?
Onya Snnya
Oops onya

I think your fatist
No... I think your fatist😂😂😂😂
fattest
when did he bring his laugh into the act?
This is my 1700'th favourite vid! :D
the other way around, Miles reminds you of the old Jimmy.
he looks better now
"What a nutter."
Its like a slow motion version of the current model.
A genius.
No worries,have a good one.
His voice is so posh
One person is hearing voices in their legs
"and then they bother to learn their material."
4:31 I don't get the joke but his face is just so hilarious
In Australia that would be a weekend in Tasmania, not Norfolk
Or NZ :)
sounds different to how he does now but still good
i miss his coldness.
AWESOME stuff! :D :)
Its a benefit not the royal variety One
I prefer him now, quicker, energetic, warm, heckler friendly, witty and if anything, more daring.

Is me or does he sound super posh in this??
+Lilly Thomas He has a posh background as far as I know...but he tries to sound more WORKING KLASSSSS now
He is a Scouser.
i laughed harder at this comment than jimmy's entire 5 mins show
If we save what we spend on groceries for one week, we can feed the third world for a year.. we are overcharged for our groceries LOL
He seems to stumble a bit but i think he says: "A lot of people come to an important benefit gig like this and they don't bother to learn any material..." (Then reads his notes....)
what exactly does he say in 1:08?
Never mind, I got it now ;) You forgot "don't" in the sentence.
His Material was fantastic but his delivery was too cold even for him!
Actually thecassman got it completely wrong. What he actually said was the complete opposite - "A lot of people come to an important benefit gig like this and they bother to learn their material". He then looks at his notes to indicate that he HASN'T bothered to learn his material - therein lies the joke.
towards the end he sounded like dumbledore....
no, i didn't.
I loved it when he was a big dirty cleanshirt posho
Who's the American who disliked this!?
Indeed, it is relative. I meant it a) in that he sounds posher than he does in his more recent stuff, but that may partially be because his delivery is a little more... stilted? deadpan? that he is now, and b) in a nice way, because I luff Jimmy Carr lots and lots. Damn, I'm American and some of the words he says I don't understand, which ruin the jokes for me. Overall he's fucking awesome and cold/brutal.
i come from norfolk,,,cheeky sod ...
actually i cant remember the last time the queen attended it, its usually just close family like Prince Charles
a small price to pay to watch him destroy the audience...
he really sounds like Voldermort haha
yeah my grandparents dont get it either.
Somuch rehashed jokes over the years
What does he say at 4:31?
Or nothing?
there like a bus literally
Well, you did well. Thanks :)
The real truth behind Viagra.!
He has never bettered this.Got edgier , got dirtier, got cleverer but never funnier.
I totally agree! He's in his best shape here!
I figured it was better to be explicit with my explanation rather than cause more confusion by not explaining enough :p
I said no.
Don't think it is the Royal Variety mate. He doesn't now to the royal box after and his material isn't tame enough - he is really restricted when he performs at the RV sadly.

"A lot of people come to an important benefit gig like this, and then they ...(???)"
"They don't bother to learn their material..." he says, and looks at his written notes.
u sure this is royal variety?
he meant that she was cheap and easy :)
His accent is so posh :33333
About the the part where if you're a single guy asking a girl out, in which she responds "I love you like a brother", what did Jimmy reply to that? Could not catch that
"I suggest a weekend in Norfolk."
In America that's pronounced Alabama.
He's being stereotypical about norfolk
I live in a third world country and groceries are cheaper here than in USA and England
did he forget to finish his joke 5.00 mins in?
Why is he talking slower than usual ?
I don't get the buses joke.
busses are big
James Waugh
DAMN
St0nedStoner Everyone can get in with a little fee
They were as big as buses
"Doesn't bother to learn their material" *looks at clipboard
Early days... delivery is a bit off... Good stuff though...
