Many years ago, I heard a preacher's wife say she knew who the antichrist was... she said, "It's the internet." I've always remembered that comment. As with everything, there seems to be good and bad. The internet seems to have a more extreme of good and bad. The good - I wouldn't be listening to and seeing Otis and his music and interviews, who I discovered 5 months ago. The bad - seeing a young couple at a restaurant who seem to be on a first date, spending more time looking at their phones than getting to know each other. Almost every table at restaurants with people staring at phones. The world we live in. - Florida Dirt Fire.
i like to bike ride in the city downtown , where i often see groups of usually younger people walking down the street tween bar or restaurants together ,usually with 1 or 2 or all with a cell phone held in their face .on a bicycle ,i am basically silent so tween phone and quite they dont notice me and routinely walk straight into me or in front of me crossing the street . we have named these types Text ZOMBIES , Also in vehicles , and thats what we address them as to gain their attention . Text Zombies .
I guess from Roger's perspective (a man well into his 70's) his world has changed - well its actually gone (magazines deliver stories, live shows, etc.). Without the internet I would never have discovered Otis, JP Cormier, Dale Watson...and so many other delightful discoveries. But then again, today when I do get out to a show, it's hard to see the artist through the hundreds of cell phones held in air... Hope all is well for all my fellow Otis fans.
Same here. JP Cormier and his demos are fantastic! I'd never heard of Boucher Guitars until I stumbled upon JP's channel one night. Otis's channel is a great find too. Love his stories from Kenny Vaughn, Chris Scruggs, and Gurf Morlix.
from a guy in his early 50's - I totally agree with him. Hate mongering cults have developed though the internet, becoming mainstream because of ease of access. Plus I discovered JP Cormier by renting a cottage in Cheticamp Nova Scotia in 2008 and running into him at the local music store LOL
@peterbetts858 Yes, the JP from Nova Scotia. He's a master player (very good fingers style player- monster flat picker. He actually plays just about anything with strings. Terrific fiddle, banjo, and mandolin player. I've been lucky enough to see him twice. He sometimes plays a few gigs in my area as he makes his way out west of heads south into the US on tours. Someday, I'd love to see Otis live, I don't think he'll be up this way so it will have to be a road trip ~ seeing Otis would be a good reason for one 👍

The worst thing about the internet…actually Social Media.. is the anonymity.. There’s wayyy too many people with an alias who love to spew their hate across the planet… I think we should all be required to use our real names… It might sound like a little thing.. but I bet it’d change a lot of the negativity we all experience now… AI is scaring the crap outta me…!

I'm just going to focus on one aspect here. I grew up as a punk rock kid where you literally had to mail in orders to record labels to get cassettes. Now flash forward to when I heard you on SiriusXM. Without the internet I wouldn't have been able to buy all your CDs the next week. I certainly wouldn't have known when you were touring so I could go to Indianapolis and Chicago. And I wouldn't be able to connect with the person behind those songs to gain a deeper understanding of the depth of their meaning. I grew up in the foothills of Appalachia, nature aside, the world I was born into was not one that offered me anything that I wanted. But the thing that we all have to remember is it's a choice. For the most part you don't have to be on social media. I do think we're going to look back on social media like cigarettes and we're not going to be able to believe it we all did it willingly.But like cigarettes a few won't hurt but too much will kill you.❤
Good point Bud ,there are good aspects to the internet such as communication , research , info . , but there are just as many evils , shady , sketchy , addictive , perverted , dangerous , excessive , hateful things that need to be held in chec . other wise its just an enabler , and you know smokin cigarettes does cause Lung Cancer . I enjoy hearing from the folks who gravitate to this site as much as I do from Otis who starts these conversations. The commenters are largely thoughtful, caring and respectful with some wonderful stories. This morning we got to share coffee with William (on his front porch somewhere in the world) and Nomad (in Thailand). Hi William! Hi Nomad! Nice to share some caffeinated communication. Hopefully, these will not be the good old days of the internet and the future Williams and Nomads will not be AI minus the coffee.

I would go back in a heartbeat !!! I like watching music related videos, guitar demos , etc. but, even that has ruined being able to buy reasonably priced vintage guitars.....I think it was good in the early days but now not so much. Cheers Brother Otis.
The best thing about the internet is the fact we can get news that is not tainted by networks and the moneyed big shots. We have been lied to so much that most are either sheep or don't know what to think. But you can find truth but it don't come easy. As far as social media you can just leave it as I do. I do like the music aspects but not how artists are paid. Do I like life before the internet... absolutely! Not much use in looking back, we need to move forward with intelligence and discernment.
As with anything, there are pros and cons. It's great that through the internet you've been able to connect with people and places that you would probably never connect with otherwise. That's a pro. Being able to access info and get educated on things is great. But when i see four people on their lunch, outside at a bistro table, all quietly staring down at their phones or tablets, instead of enjoying each other's company, no conversation, or people walking in crowds, heads down, staring at their phones, i long for simpler times, when we talked to each other, looked at each other, enjoyed the company we kept. Old ideas i know, but as convenient as the internet is, i think i could very happily live without it. I guess i have the advantage of knowing how it was before the internet and social media, like many of us older humans do, but i'd take the former over the latter in this case. And i don't recall the first search or purchase i ever made, but i remember real lighters at concerts, not phone screen images of lighters. I prefer concerts without phones.
Yes. On a slightly different note, I recently had the opportunity to see the very famous Trevi fountain in Rome Italy. It happened to be Easter week so there were thousands of people at the fountain, so many you couldn't get to the waters edge. Looking down from above what I remember the most really is the thousands of tourists with there thousands of devices held high out in front of themselves taking selfies. Rather than truly admiring the work of art, giving it the attention it deserves, these thousands of people were staring at there phones taking selfies.All separate , as if each person was in there own personal bubble. No interaction. And this is what I remember.
You’ve summed up my thoughts exactly. Sadly no going back even if we wanted. Life is internet dependent but hopefully technology will resolve some of those issues eg AI cleaning up the internet but of course the danger is who controls that AI rewriting or hiding the truth. AI wars may even be a thing. Ironically it may turn people off the platform as they distrust it or find it all too depressing or negative. People may choose to become more ignorant for sanity sake. Perhaps the ignorance was always there anyway as media was always controlled in one way or another.

Internet is good and bad, like anything else. If used wisely its great for instant education on pretty much any subject and obviously great for fairly instant communication with anyone in the world. On the other hand, it kills respectable debate because some people get very ANGRY, OFFENSIVE etc when hiding behind their keyboard. I think the world was a better place without it though, generally speaking. Online communities will never be as fulfulling as actual meeting in person communities.

I would like to see if an iPhone can skip when I throw it in the lake. I hate being immediately accessible or the expectation. Very grateful for folks like Otis. But most content is shit, this is very much the exception. Lot of personal responsibility required. As an old man, I just don’t indulge. But my grands??? I think it’s dangerous territory.
The internet is 50% good and 50% bad, overall, for everyone. On the other hand, the Telephone was 50% good and 50% bad, overall, for the art of writing a letter to somebody. Remember "Pen pals"? (no, not paypal ) that was the snail-mail version of a chatroom. And still there were people that I'm sure that must have thought the typewriter destroyed the art of "penmanship"....
As others have mentioned, like everything in life, there is good and bad, and that's the way of the world. But some of the bad side is REALLY bad. It's too easy to con people into bellieving all kinds of crazy things. I'm tempted to go into specifics but that might start a 'flame war' (another horrible aspect). To me one of the worst things is there is no more mystery to anything. I'll use the music world as an example. Back in the day it was next to impossible to know everything about a band. You saw things on TV (maybe, we only had three major networks - cable is another good/bad thing) or more likely heard something on the radio or read something in a magazine. It was a treat to find some pictures or read or hear an interview. It was something special. You had to have the album, or hear a song on the radio, or go to a concert, in order to hear their music. Seeing a band live or on TV was a huge treat. There was a sense of 'mystery' there. When you learned something new it was an 'oh wow' moment. When a new song came out you had to wait to hear it on the radio or go out and buy the album. Usually you didn't have it, so it was a special thing to go to that friend's house who did have it. Now, you can find every picture that every existed, listen to any song ever recorded, see those old concerts, learn everything about everyone in the band (or get misinfomed), all instantly. Again, there are some 'good' aspects to that, but the mysetery is gone. Young people will never understand that. That 'mystery' doesn't exist any more, and I find that incredibly sad. I also understand the positives of the net (e..g. being able to 'interact' and share here), there are a lot for me personally, but I see where Roger is coming from. I guess I'm a bit more of a 'realist' and can see the good sides too, but he's right about a lot of it. It really is a big source of the problems we have in our society today, and unfortunately that will get worse over time. I can't imagine what things will be like in even just ten more years, let alone 50 or 100.
Otis, I think what you said about you benefitting personally from the internet vs the internet being bad for society as a whole sums it up perfectly. Access to the internet has enriched my life immeasurably-the things I’ve learned, the whole world at my fingertips, anything I might want to find out, however important or trivial, it’s all the for the searching. OTOH, it can also be a huge time suck-that’s really the biggest downside for me personally. As for the internet’s effect on society-horrific! I seriously wonder if civilization will last much longer.

When the Internet first hit, My Old Mom told me that it was going to be the downfall of Society. She never turned a computer on yet she was right about so many things. The thing I love about the internet is the wealth of knowledge in anything, the incredible vast resource that the Web is. So Yes, There are a lot of downsides to it, some people get sucked into bad spaces and I have had to be on guard against all of it. I would say the one big difference for me Is I question everything. 20 years ago I'd of believed things, Now? I believe nothing until I see proof
Hatred of the internet, what's not to hate? Families don't know how to have conversations anymore. Look around you in a restaurant and look at everyone at the table with a device in their hand, ignoring each other. Sad.
To me the internet is like having an infinite stack of magazines. Its the social networks that I think Daltrey is referring to. I'm always a fraction of an inch of getting rid of Facebook. But I never do.
I remember my dad's and grandpa's generation bitchinng how everybody was watching TV and how easy the younger generation had it. So unless those younger than ourselves had lived through the 70s and 80s without the constant connectivity and the absolute corporate control of our lives 24/7. along with the tremendous disconnect from personal contact then that would not be understood by younger generations. We never had mass shootings more than every day and the level of homeless and gun violence. In short this connectivity has come at heavy individual and societal cost.
Many things about the 'net suck (Facebook...etc) but as a independent musician it has proved to be a amazing tool for contact and sharing and I have learned so muchgetting to see other musicians share and play, hard for me to say much bad about it.The ability for haters to dampen everything notwithstanding.

For me, I love people and can become consumed with just friends on Facebook and making caring or funny comments to them. So I just try to look at my life, what is really important and wherever the internet fits in I use it.
You nailed it on the head right there Otis, back in the day, exposure was and is now everything in all forms of business, but in the music industry this was very much true. I think the wild west days of the Internet are coming to an end, or at least hope, sense has to prevail, some sensible regulation. But for indie artists in all forms win win win! I do enjoy the ease of shopping online and getting information about almost anything online… but I don’t do social media… no Facebook or twitter…. I have no use for it… Idealistically… I thought the internet would make the world a better smaller place because everyone would have access…. But that’s also the problem… it depends what and how you use it… for. First of all, I think a distiction should be made between the Internet and Smartphones. I've never had a PC and wouldn't even know how to turn one on. That said, I love having access to info and music, as well as having a built-in camera plus a recording app if I feel like playing the guitar and singing. (it's so sensitive, it'll pick up smacking lips or the slightest movement). So, I guess like most things, if used in moderation, it's a good thing. Great thing! I'm with you about people using their phones at concerts or taking them on vacation to record every moment. Jeez, live life in the moment! I had something to say regarding AI, but I'll save it for the time being. So...peace, out. And I enjoyed the Simpsons reference! 😻✌
There are great and terrible things about the internet. I would agree that some types of social media are just cesspools. For example, I no longer use Twitter. I had Tic Tock for a short time, and after seeing so much filth, I immediately deleted it. Otherwise, I choose the internet. The first internet search for me was probably in the mid 1990s. Some people romanticize about the "good old days". I love that I can control social interaction, i.e., I only talk on the phone if there is a reason that I need to - I don't have to put up with being a prisoner of people who just want to blab. I can't remember my first online purchase, but I would guess it would be an LL Bean clothing item. I had ordered from them for years before, so it was just another way of buying. I looked up the last thing I got online, and it was leather ukulele picks. The background of that was there was a discussion (online) about picks for ukuleles. Most people strum ukes, but picks can be used as well. I said, I got a felt pick that came with a uke strap, but I didn't like it. That lead to another person talking about leather ones, which I never heard of. - Anyway, I totally respect Roger's view. It doesn't work for me. I did love reading his autobiography. I love many different types of music.
Its the modern day tower of babel. It took us some 4,500 years to rebuild after the scattering and now we're back on track to destroy ourselves. But not being on the web is like not having a telephone in the 1970s. You can't get gigs or a job without it.

I probably would never knew u existed if we had no internet and I hope this don’t hurt your feelings, but if I never knew you existed, then I wouldn’t know what I was missing. When I first started using the Internet, web browsers didn't exist. The closest thing to social media was probably Usenet. Back then I thought the Internet would be a force for good. Turns out it's a general tool for spreading good and bad things. People will exploit anything. The invention of recording technology allowed people to hear music from artists they may have never known about and was a new source of revenue for artists. It also allowed exploitation of artists by people with no artistic talent. Like television and radio, it's a thing that has come along and disrupted, and it takes a long time for the dust to settle, if it ever does, before the next disruption appears.
I’m not so opposed to the internet, but I’ve felt a similar contempt to Daltrey when it comes to people and their cellphones. For the record, I love all that’s good. I love having music, encyclopedias, etc. etc.. What I don’t like is the distraction in people walking around, driving, and having dinner with them. People’s sensibilities to each other seem to be corrupted by the cellphone. It’s a strange thing.. If I don’t answer a call from someone for whatever reason, it’s inexcusable.. Like something else was more important than taking the call. But if I’m out having lunch with the same person, it’s okay for me to sit there and watch them being absorbed by their phone most of the time. Yeah.. Anyway, I’m not living for the sake of being instantly accessible at all hours of the day, and I’m not trying to have lunch with cyborgs.. Funny side note depending on who you ask.. I went to the Grand Canyon years back. A couple of weeks later at the same spot I visited, a guy fell into the canyon trying to take a selfie. I guess the moral of the story here, is don’t be like that guy. 😀
I’m sixty-eight and the internet changed my life when I first went online in 1998. Suddenly, the whole world was at my fingertips. I could learn almost anything I wanted to know by simply typing a few words, or even one word, into a search engine tool bar. I could communicate with people all around the world. Now, I can pay bills, converse with extended family and friends wherever they are, listen to music, watch television, movies, and videos, shop, and get the latest news, weather, and sports. The key to utilizing the internet, as with most things, is moderation. The internet can be a valuable tool or a dangerous narcotic. Ignoring the internet can make some things more difficult than they need to be. Overuse can turn you into a basement dwelling, Mountain Dew swilling, Dorito eating, game playing, zombie who spends every spare moment in front of a keyboard in their underwear. You can’t allow the internet to be the center of your universe.
The internet has made information easier to find. I’ve learned how to fix things I would never have found out how to without the internet. Daltry hates the internet, because his music royalties have gone down to probably zero due to the internet.
I love the internet. From the time I got online in 1999, within 6 months I was able to make a modest living online with a website and then ebay, and never looked back. Not having to work for "The Man" anymore was liberating. Yes, ebay started in 1995, and I've bought and sold there often. I collect vintage toys and it's amazing what can be found online. The internet also gave me access to information that I never would have easily had otherwise, like info on favorite bands, acess to scientific things, and much more. There are tradeoffs of course like being careful to not become too isolated, since the online world can take over your life quite easily. But overall I'm happy it came around in my lifetime.
I think most of the problems mentioned are a result of the mobile phones/devices more than the internet. If the internet was only available on desktop computers I don't think any of these problems would be nearly as bad.
I first logged in in 1992. AOL, then Netscape. I love it. Such an incredible resource for research and understanding and opening up the world and universe. But then, I run my life. The internet doesn’t run my life. I absorb the good and reject the shit; just like in real life.
Understand, that just because, someone is old and a bit cranky, it doesn't automatically make them wrong. Some recall just how much better in a great number of ways that the world of analog was safer and better than where we are now with the digital tools and gadgets.
First time I heard about eBay I was flying home on a business trip just before Christmas 1997. I was sitting next to a woman and we got to talking and somehow it came up that she sold buttons on this internet thing called eBay. I said, “how do you spell that? January 2, 1998 I registered. At the time the item numbers were just above 3,000,000. First item I bought was a postcard. I was just amazed when I mailed cash payment to someone I didn’t know and received the postcard.
I love the internet but I really dislike that young people can't apply themselves because they can't put their cell phone down. Texting and driving is a huge problem too. Otherwise, it's good in moderation just like most everything else.
Otis, thinkin' it's like every man made thing, good, beneficial, or a curse, depending on who's hands are on it. I like googling any tune comes to mind and instantly getting the lyrics, writer, year, etc. I don't like strumming Sleepwalk on my Telecaster right next to my laptop, and having doz. suggestions for Sleepwalk or Santo & Johnny next time I open UA-cam.
The internet has allowed us to present a mostly false image of who we are that breaks down in person, and also causes us to miss countless moments of our lives lived through our phone screen. Face to face life is the way it has been lived for a very, very long time. This new age is still so new we just can't conceive of the possible issues and pitfalls. He may be right, God bless him. It sure doesn't seem to make him happy though.

The scary thing about AI is the same thing that motivated that deadly robot that Will Smith's character faced in the 2005 film adaptation of the old Sci-Fi classic, "I, Robot." Short version is: the robot wanted to wipe out humans, because it's obvious that humans cause more problems than all natural catastrophes combined. It's interesting how nobody remembers THAT plot point. The Internet is the same way; it's not evil on it's own, but when Humans get loose online, they exhibit that quality that Mark Twain called "cussedness." I think that's what Roger meant, as well. Roger is like many other British musicians from his time; and he had to work at a young age, and so he's always been glad to be a musician(instead of working), and so he takes care of himself, keeping fit and avoiding stuff that he sees as bad, like drugs or internet chat cesspools. He's been married to the same pretty woman for 50 years or so

The internet is a thing that has to be used with care it is a tool. I did get a computer in the nineties and used AOL it tied up my telephone line lol , young people don't know what that means. But AI is a tool as well, it just gives me a creepy feeling when I think about it. I also remember buying jig heads off a card at the old mom and pop gas station. There would be one close to any good sized creek that should a limited supply of fishing paraphernalia. Wow man it blows mind to think of all the things that are gone now. I'm one of the guys who craves information and I get it through being on you tube. I can't get into other forms of social media it just doesn't make me feel right. But as Pete Townsend apparently once said to John Entwhistle, when the later complained about not "getting" rap, Pete said, "it's not our job to understand; it's our job to get the f*ck out of the way." Roger Daltry, who likes fish more than people, should remember that he has been able to buy all his rods and even his trout farm because his mate Pete Townsend can write. In particular, as far as Daltry’s relationship with the internet is concerned, Townsend embarked on a rock opera, right after he had finished Tommy, called Life House. Life House actually envisaged an internet, even back in 1969, and how it would impact on society (amongst other things). It never got finished, not the way Townsend wanted anyway, but it did get raided for material to satisfy contractual obligations, much of which comprises The Who’s (possibly) best known album Who’s Next. In other words Daltry has has been trading, wittingly or more likely unwittingly, on an idea of Townsend’s that foresaw the internet over fifty years ago. Townsend, though possibly not your ideal best friend, is brilliant and has always had something of the futurist about him. And he is a bona fide intellectual, which is why he can write the way he does. Whereas Daltry is a Luddite who couldn’t write a love letter to a trout. In fact his personality flaws are such that I can no longer listen to The Who at all (as a teenager they were my favorite band). Many of the most important songs have not worn at all well and have instead sadly become music for neanderthal, misogynistic meatheads. The Stones would have dropped them from their set by now. The Who can’t do that because they would have nothing left if they did. This possibly explains why Townsend and Daltry have never tended to spend much time socializing with each other. The don’t agree on much and Daltry especially is not a man of the C21st.

Many years ago, I heard a preacher's wife say she knew who the antichrist was... she said, "It's the internet." I've always remembered that comment. As with everything, there seems to be good and bad. The internet seems to have a more extreme of good and bad. The good - I wouldn't be listening to and seeing Otis and his music and interviews, who I discovered 5 months ago. The bad - seeing a young couple at a restaurant who seem to be on a first date, spending more time looking at their phones than getting to know each other. Almost every table at restaurants with people staring at phones. The world we live in. - Florida Dirt Fire.
i like to bike ride in the city downtown , where i often see groups of usually younger people walking down the street tween bar or restaurants together ,usually with 1 or 2 or all with a cell phone held in their face .on a bicycle ,i am basically silent so tween phone and quite they dont notice me and routinely walk straight into me or in front of me crossing the street . we have named these types Text ZOMBIES , Also in vehicles , and thats what we address them as to gain their attention . Text Zombies .
I guess from Roger's perspective (a man well into his 70's) his world has changed - well its actually gone (magazines deliver stories, live shows, etc.).
Without the internet I would never have discovered Otis, JP Cormier, Dale Watson...and so many other delightful discoveries.
But then again, today when I do get out to a show, it's hard to see the artist through the hundreds of cell phones held in air...

@peterbetts858 Yes, the JP from Nova Scotia. He's a master player (very good fingers style player- monster flat picker. He actually plays just about anything with strings. Terrific fiddle, banjo, and mandolin player.
I've been lucky enough to see him twice. He sometimes plays a few gigs in my area as he makes his way out west of heads south into the US on tours.
Someday, I'd love to see Otis live, I don't think he'll be up this way so it will have to be a road trip ~ seeing Otis would be a good reason for one 👍

I'm just going to focus on one aspect here. I grew up as a punk rock kid where you literally had to mail in orders to record labels to get cassettes. Now flash forward to when I heard you on SiriusXM. Without the internet I wouldn't have been able to buy all your CDs the next week. I certainly wouldn't have known when you were touring so I could go to Indianapolis and Chicago. And I wouldn't be able to connect with the person behind those songs to gain a deeper understanding of the depth of their meaning. I grew up in the foothills of Appalachia, nature aside, the world I was born into was not one that offered me anything that I wanted. But the thing that we all have to remember is it's a choice. For the most part you don't have to be on social media. I do think we're going to look back on social media like cigarettes and we're not going to be able to believe it we all did it willingly.But like cigarettes a few won't hurt but too much will kill you.❤

I would go back in a heartbeat !!! I like watching music related videos, guitar demos , etc. but, even that has ruined being able to buy reasonably priced vintage guitars.....I think it was good in the early days but now not so much.

The best thing about the internet is the fact we can get news that is not tainted by networks and the moneyed big shots. We have been lied to so much that most are either sheep or don't know what to think. But you can find truth but it don't come easy. As far as social media you can just leave it as I do. I do like the music aspects but not how artists are paid. Do I like life before the internet... absolutely! Not much use in looking back, we need to move forward with intelligence and discernment.
As with anything, there are pros and cons. It's great that through the internet you've been able to connect with people and places that you would probably never connect with otherwise. That's a pro. Being able to access info and get educated on things is great. But when i see four people on their lunch, outside at a bistro table, all quietly staring down at their phones or tablets, instead of enjoying each other's company, no conversation, or people walking in crowds, heads down, staring at their phones, i long for simpler times, when we talked to each other, looked at each other, enjoyed the company we kept. Old ideas i know, but as convenient as the internet is, i think i could very happily live without it. I guess i have the advantage of knowing how it was before the internet and social media, like many of us older humans do, but i'd take the former over the latter in this case. And i don't recall the first search or purchase i ever made, but i remember real lighters at concerts, not phone screen images of lighters. I prefer concerts without phones.
Yes. On a slightly different note, I recently had the opportunity to see the very famous Trevi fountain in Rome Italy. It happened to be Easter week so there were thousands of people at the fountain, so many you couldn't get to the waters edge. Looking down from above what I remember the most really is the thousands of tourists with there thousands of devices held high out in front of themselves taking selfies. Rather than truly admiring the work of art, giving it the attention it deserves, these thousands of people were staring at there phones taking selfies.All separate , as if each person was in there own personal bubble. No interaction. And this is what I remember.
You’ve summed up my thoughts exactly. Sadly no going back even if we wanted. Life is internet dependent but hopefully technology will resolve some of those issues eg AI cleaning up the internet but of course the danger is who controls that AI rewriting or hiding the truth. AI wars may even be a thing. Ironically it may turn people off the platform as they distrust it or find it all too depressing or negative. People may choose to become more ignorant for sanity sake. Perhaps the ignorance was always there anyway as media was always controlled in one way or another.

Internet is good and bad, like anything else. If used wisely its great for instant education on pretty much any subject and obviously great for fairly instant communication with anyone in the world. On the other hand, it kills respectable debate because some people get very ANGRY, OFFENSIVE etc when hiding behind their keyboard. I think the world was a better place without it though, generally speaking. Online communities will never be as fulfulling as actual meeting in person communities.

The internet is 50% good and 50% bad, overall, for everyone. On the other hand, the Telephone was 50% good and 50% bad, overall, for the art of writing a letter to somebody. Remember "Pen pals"? (no, not paypal ) that was the snail-mail version of a chatroom. And still there were people that I'm sure that must have thought the typewriter destroyed the art of "penmanship"....
As others have mentioned, like everything in life, there is good and bad, and that's the way of the world. But some of the bad side is REALLY bad. It's too easy to con people into bellieving all kinds of crazy things. I'm tempted to go into specifics but that might start a 'flame war' (another horrible aspect). To me one of the worst things is there is no more mystery to anything. I'll use the music world as an example. Back in the day it was next to impossible to know everything about a band. You saw things on TV (maybe, we only had three major networks - cable is another good/bad thing) or more likely heard something on the radio or read something in a magazine. It was a treat to find some pictures or read or hear an interview. It was something special. You had to have the album, or hear a song on the radio, or go to a concert, in order to hear their music. Seeing a band live or on TV was a huge treat. There was a sense of 'mystery' there. When you learned something new it was an 'oh wow' moment. When a new song came out you had to wait to hear it on the radio or go out and buy the album. Usually you didn't have it, so it was a special thing to go to that friend's house who did have it. Now, you can find every picture that every existed, listen to any song ever recorded, see those old concerts, learn everything about everyone in the band (or get misinfomed), all instantly. Again, there are some 'good' aspects to that, but the mysetery is gone. Young people will never understand that. That 'mystery' doesn't exist any more, and I find that incredibly sad. I also understand the positives of the net (e..g. being able to 'interact' and share here), there are a lot for me personally, but I see where Roger is coming from. I guess I'm a bit more of a 'realist' and can see the good sides too, but he's right about a lot of it. It really is a big source of the problems we have in our society today, and unfortunately that will get worse over time. I can't imagine what things will be like in even just ten more years, let alone 50 or 100.

Otis, I think what you said about you benefitting personally from the internet vs the internet being bad for society as a whole sums it up perfectly. Access to the internet has enriched my life immeasurably-the things I’ve learned, the whole world at my fingertips, anything I might want to find out, however important or trivial, it’s all the for the searching. OTOH, it can also be a huge time suck-that’s really the biggest downside for me personally. As for the internet’s effect on society-horrific! I seriously wonder if civilization will last much longer.

When the Internet first hit, My Old Mom told me that it was going to be the downfall of Society. She never turned a computer on yet she was right about so many things. The thing I love about the internet is the wealth of knowledge in anything, the incredible vast resource that the Web is. So Yes, There are a lot of downsides to it, some people get sucked into bad spaces and I have had to be on guard against all of it. I would say the one big difference for me Is I question everything. 20 years ago I'd of believed things, Now? I believe nothing until I see proof
Hatred of the internet, what's not to hate? Families don't know how to have conversations anymore. Look around you in a restaurant and look at everyone at the table with a device in their hand, ignoring each other. Sad.
To me the internet is like having an infinite stack of magazines. Its the social networks that I think Daltrey is referring to. I'm always a fraction of an inch of getting rid of Facebook. But I never do.
I would agree with him on the social media front. I have never imagined there were so many neurotic bankrupt people needing attention than I see now.
I remember my dad's and grandpa's generation bitchinng how everybody was watching TV and how easy the younger generation had it. So unless those younger than ourselves had lived through the 70s and 80s without the constant connectivity and the absolute corporate control of our lives 24/7. along with the tremendous disconnect from personal contact then that would not be understood by younger generations. We never had mass shootings more than every day and the level of homeless and gun violence. In short this connectivity has come at heavy individual and societal cost.
Many things about the 'net suck (Facebook...etc) but as a independent musician it has proved to be a amazing tool for contact and sharing and I have learned so muchgetting to see other musicians share and play, hard for me to say much bad about it.The ability for haters to dampen everything notwithstanding.

Man, we just have to do a sound check on our life more often. Use our critical thinking ability for the common good and act accordingly. For me, I love people and can become consumed with just friends on Facebook and making caring or funny comments to them. So I just try to look at my life, what is really important and wherever the internet fits in I use it.
You nailed it on the head right there Otis, back in the day, exposure was and is now everything in all forms of business, but in the music industry this was very much true. I think the wild west days of the Internet are coming to an end, or at least hope, sense has to prevail, some sensible regulation. But for indie artists in all forms win win win! I wish I could be in Rogers shoes to enjoy his perspective, its far from a silver spoon I was raised. But my shoes are made of leather, to poor to be cheap. A lesson in life.

The Internet has allowed me to discover no end of remarkabkle musicians material much of which I have purchased.
The resources online for learning a second language are incredible. And I don't mean just Duolingo!
First of all, I think a distiction should be made between the Internet and Smartphones. I've never had a PC and wouldn't even know how to turn one on.
That said, I love having access to info and music, as well as having a built-in camera plus a recording app if I feel like playing the guitar and singing. (it's so sensitive, it'll pick up smacking lips or the slightest movement).
So, I guess like most things, if used in moderation, it's a good thing. Great thing!
I'm with you about people using their phones at concerts or taking them on vacation to record every moment. Jeez, live life in the moment!

There are great and terrible things about the internet. I would agree that some types of social media are just cesspools. For example, I no longer use Twitter. I had Tic Tock for a short time, and after seeing so much filth, I immediately deleted it. Otherwise, I choose the internet. The first internet search for me was probably in the mid 1990s. Some people romanticize about the "good old days". I love that I can control social interaction, i.e., I only talk on the phone if there is a reason that I need to - I don't have to put up with being a prisoner of people who just want to blab. I can't remember my first online purchase, but I would guess it would be an LL Bean clothing item. I had ordered from them for years before, so it was just another way of buying. I looked up the last thing I got online, and it was leather ukulele picks. The background of that was there was a discussion (online) about picks for ukuleles. Most people strum ukes, but picks can be used as well. I said, I got a felt pick that came with a uke strap, but I didn't like it. That lead to another person talking about leather ones, which I never heard of. - Anyway, I totally respect Roger's view. It doesn't work for me. I did love reading his autobiography. I love many different types of music.
Its the modern day tower of babel. It took us some 4,500 years to rebuild after the scattering and now we're back on track to destroy ourselves. But not being on the web is like not having a telephone in the 1970s. You can't get gigs or a job without it.

When I first started using the Internet, web browsers didn't exist. The closest thing to social media was probably Usenet. Back then I thought the Internet would be a force for good. Turns out it's a general tool for spreading good and bad things. People will exploit anything. The invention of recording technology allowed people to hear music from artists they may have never known about and was a new source of revenue for artists. It also allowed exploitation of artists by people with no artistic talent. Like television and radio, it's a thing that has come along and disrupted, and it takes a long time for the dust to settle, if it ever does, before the next disruption appears.
Getting around gatekeepers is more important than the negatives. Albeit the negatives are significant.
I’m not so opposed to the internet, but I’ve felt a similar contempt to Daltrey when it comes to people and their cellphones. For the record, I love all that’s good. I love having music, encyclopedias, etc. etc.. What I don’t like is the distraction in people walking around, driving, and having dinner with them. People’s sensibilities to each other seem to be corrupted by the cellphone. It’s a strange thing.. If I don’t answer a call from someone for whatever reason, it’s inexcusable.. Like something else was more important than taking the call. But if I’m out having lunch with the same person, it’s okay for me to sit there and watch them being absorbed by their phone most of the time. Yeah.. Anyway, I’m not living for the sake of being instantly accessible at all hours of the day, and I’m not trying to have lunch with cyborgs.. Funny side note depending on who you ask.. I went to the Grand Canyon years back. A couple of weeks later at the same spot I visited, a guy fell into the canyon trying to take a selfie. I guess the moral of the story here, is don’t be like that guy. 😀

I’m sixty-eight and the internet changed my life when I first went online in 1998. Suddenly, the whole world was at my fingertips. I could learn almost anything I wanted to know by simply typing a few words, or even one word, into a search engine tool bar. I could communicate with people all around the world.
Now, I can pay bills, converse with extended family and friends wherever they are, listen to music, watch television, movies, and videos, shop, and get the latest news, weather, and sports.
The key to utilizing the internet, as with most things, is moderation. The internet can be a valuable tool or a dangerous narcotic. Ignoring the internet can make some things more difficult than they need to be. Overuse can turn you into a basement dwelling, Mountain Dew swilling, Dorito eating, game playing, zombie who spends every spare moment in front of a keyboard in their underwear. You can’t allow the internet to be the center of your universe.
The internet has made information easier to find. I’ve learned how to fix things I would never have found out how to without the internet. Daltry hates the internet, because his music royalties have gone down to probably zero due to the internet.
I love the internet. From the time I got online in 1999, within 6 months I was able to make a modest living online with a website and then ebay, and never looked back. Not having to work for "The Man" anymore was liberating. Yes, ebay started in 1995, and I've bought and sold there often. I collect vintage toys and it's amazing what can be found online. The internet also gave me access to information that I never would have easily had otherwise, like info on favorite bands, acess to scientific things, and much more. There are tradeoffs of course like being careful to not become too isolated, since the online world can take over your life quite easily. But overall I'm happy it came around in my lifetime.
As I got older I realised how pointless it is contemplating what if things happened differently in the past.
I think most of the problems mentioned are a result of the mobile phones/devices more than the internet. If the internet was only available on desktop computers I don't think any of these problems would be nearly as bad.

Understand, that just because, someone is old and a bit cranky, it doesn't automatically make them wrong. Some recall just how much better in a great number of ways that the world of analog was safer and better than where we are now with the digital tools and gadgets.
First time I heard about eBay I was flying home on a business trip just before Christmas 1997. I was sitting next to a woman and we got to talking and somehow it came up that she sold buttons on this internet thing called eBay. I said, “how do you spell that? January 2, 1998 I registered. At the time the item numbers were just above 3,000,000. First item I bought was a postcard. I was just amazed when I mailed cash payment to someone I didn’t know and received the postcard.
I love the internet but I really dislike that young people can't apply themselves because they can't put their cell phone down. Texting and driving is a huge problem too. Otherwise, it's good in moderation just like most everything else.
Bring back the card catalog.

Otis, thinkin' it's like every man made thing, good, beneficial, or a curse, depending on who's hands are on it. I like googling any tune comes to mind and instantly getting the lyrics, writer, year, etc.
I don't like strumming Sleepwalk on my Telecaster right next to my laptop, and having doz. suggestions for Sleepwalk or Santo & Johnny next time I open UA-cam.
The internet has allowed us to present a mostly false image of who we are that breaks down in person, and also causes us to miss countless moments of our lives lived through our phone screen. Face to face life is the way it has been lived for a very, very long time. This new age is still so new we just can't conceive of the possible issues and pitfalls. He may be right, God bless him. It sure doesn't seem to make him happy though.
Well I am not in Indiana never bought anything on line I think the internet is a pandoras box. It's how it's used can either good or bad you better becareful how it's used
The scary thing about AI is the same thing that motivated that deadly robot that Will Smith's character faced in the 2005 film adaptation of the old Sci-Fi classic, "I, Robot." Short version is: the robot wanted to wipe out humans, because it's obvious that humans cause more problems than all natural catastrophes combined. It's interesting how nobody remembers THAT plot point.
The Internet is the same way; it's not evil on it's own, but when Humans get loose online, they exhibit that quality that Mark Twain called "cussedness." I think that's what Roger meant, as well. Roger is like many other British musicians from his time; and he had to work at a young age, and so he's always been glad to be a musician(instead of working), and so he takes care of himself, keeping fit and avoiding stuff that he sees as bad, like drugs or internet chat cesspools. He's been married to the same pretty woman for 50 years or so

The internet is a thing that has to be used with care it is a tool. I did get a computer in the nineties and used AOL it tied up my telephone line lol , young people don't know what that means. But AI is a tool as well, it just gives me a creepy feeling when I think about it. I also remember buying jig heads off a card at the old mom and pop gas station. There would be one close to any good sized creek that should a limited supply of fishing paraphernalia. Wow man it blows mind to think of all the things that are gone now. I'm one of the guys who craves information and I get it through being on you tube. I can't get into other forms of social media it just doesn't make me feel right. it's his job as a person in his 70's to tell the internet to get off his lawn. Generational change often sucks and is incomprehensible to the older generation. But as Pete Townsend apparently once said to John Entwhistle, when the later complained about not "getting" rap, Pete said, "it's not our job to understand; it's our job to get the f*ck out of the way." Amen Pete.

Roger Daltry, who likes fish more than people, should remember that he has been able to buy all his rods and even his trout farm because his mate Pete Townsend can write. In particular, as far as Daltry’s relationship with the internet is concerned, Townsend embarked on a rock opera, right after he had finished Tommy, called Life House. Life House actually envisaged an internet, even back in 1969, and how it would impact on society (amongst other things). It never got finished, not the way Townsend wanted anyway, but it did get raided for material to satisfy contractual obligations, much of which comprises The Who’s (possibly) best known album Who’s Next. In other words Daltry has has been trading, wittingly or more likely unwittingly, on an idea of Townsend’s that foresaw the internet over fifty years ago.
Townsend, though possibly not your ideal best friend, is brilliant and has always had something of the futurist about him. And he is a bona fide intellectual, which is why he can write the way he does. Whereas Daltry is a Luddite who couldn’t write a love letter to a trout. In fact his personality flaws are such that I can no longer listen to The Who at all (as a teenager they were my favorite band). Many of the most important songs have not worn at all well and have instead sadly become music for neanderthal, misogynistic meatheads. The Stones would have dropped them from their set by now. The Who can’t do that because they would have nothing left if they did.
This possibly explains why Townsend and Daltry have never tended to spend much time socializing with each other. The don’t agree on much and Daltry especially is not a man of the C21st.
