You lived every persons fantasy that has ever been a Beatle's or Paul McCartney fan, what a gift from that producer, he must really like and respect you a whole lot to have included you in that situation. Great story.
What a GREAT story! I'm a big-big Paul McCartney fan, so it was cool to hear how your chance meeting with this true musical legend happened to come together, and what your two-hour hang with Paul and David Khane was like. Thanks for sharing this with us. I really like your guitar playing too. You're a killer player! I was in Kim's office at Carter's one day, checking out an acoustic guitar, and you were in the room next to us checking out some Fender tweed amp. I just sat there for a while and listened to your noodling around. It was a real treat!
'Level of awareness’ is what sets an understanding of anyone who you might be with; a high standing one will be remembered no matter who. Great story telling, thanks you both. ☮
Can't even imagine what it would be like to have Paul McCartney's level of fame. So famous, the most famous people are star struck in front of him. Musicians more than any one. So famous, that people stiffen up, act strange because they can't help it, say stupid things, cry, freeze, blubber nonsensical things, offer over-the-top praise, stare.... every single day he's ventured out since 1963. The hoops he must jump through to simply get people to relate to him on a more human level... must be exhausting. But, he really seems to be a happy warrior. And after all this time, has obviously gotten used to it and it's just his way of being. He's old now. Won't be with us forever. What a treasure.
I've met many Rock Stars over the years and have never really been Star Struck. I never asked for anything like photos or autographs and the folks I met seemed comfortable with that... I was an employee of a known Rock Star in L.A. and from that alone I met a lot of people... To meet a Beatle I'm sure I would freeze up in a heartbeat!!! Pretty sure I would immediately become unable to speak!! To Ringo and Paul THANK YOU!!!!!
What a COOL story and you can’t help feeling happy for this guy. He is now part of that fabric of greatness having made music with Paul. I don’t know if I could have pulled myself together having a chance to play with him. He’s just such a huge part of music and not only my childhood, but my fathers. Musicians have the greatest jobs in the world. What they create not only lives on but it becomes a part of people’s lives in a way that allows them to make it personal. It’s a true gift.
What a sweet moment in time, and told so well. By blessing us with this, you put me in the control room with JD and Paul, allowing me to be a well behaved fly on the wall, with big ears!
From 15:00 - Paul saying they had 4 great sets in Hamburg and then, back in the UK they only played for an hour so they took the best bits of each set. This is an insight I don't remember reading anywhere before and I've read so many Beatley books over the years.
Well, those were some pretty good questions that JD asked. I'm happy that he got answered and just as happy that we got to hear the answers too! Thanks Otis and JD!
That is an amazing story. I am so happy for you that you got to experience that. I was a little surprised about the cautioning against asking Sir Paul questions. Also amazing that you were able to recall details of the encounter. I'd imagine that it's hard to really stay in the moment in a situation like that.
In the early 1980s, I worked for a Rock Star, who I won't name however, he told me about special project at The Record Plant. The group was The New Barbarians and that included Ringo Starr. My employer told me he could get me in to meet Ringo! It was all set, I would meet Ringo on Tuesday Dec.9. 1980..... Don't believe anyone doesn't know what happened the night before?..... So my heart was broken so many ways. Never met Ringo but, I will never miss a chance to see Ringo and Friends... Saw him once on his last tour and he is an absolutely great Showman!!!!!! Would love to see McCartney live but he an Ringo are probably just about at the end of their touring daze! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE "PEACE AND LOVE" MR. McCartney AND MR. STARR. YOU CHANGED THE WORLD FOR THE BETTER!!!! WE=mc2
What a beautifully-told story. There are plenty of so-called 'superstars' that would be virtually speechless or blurting out nonsense on the presence of Paul McCartney. He's probably the greatest living figure in the world of music across any genres. It's a miracle that McCartney has retained any degree of normality given his fame and how everyone from presidents to royals and entertainment legends are all awed by his talent and legacy. I think there must almost be two Pauls - the musical god in public and the regular working-class family man from Liverpool in private. You were lucky to be in the presence of both...
Waiting for a table in San Francisco on a Sunday night in a very busy restaurant, I saw a familiar looking guy waiting to get drinks at he bar. It was Bob Weir of Grateful Dead. I said casually, I really like your music. We ended speaking for 45 min or so about everything but music. He was a real nice guy and even stole a breadstick off my table as he walked by later. Very cool. I was 20 or so nd only seen him from the pit at 50 shows growing up.
This video randomly popped up in my youtube feed and I have to say I absolutely loved this story! Paul is such a legend and I would have felt exactly like you did in that situation.
Love the “ knocked their dicks in the dirt” comment. Humanizes the living legend. Love that Paul unweighted the jam session with “I guess we’re in a band now” comment. Wild. The dynamics of meeting a Rock god as another musician could be a very mixed blessing. A certain amount of ego and confidence in your ability is required.
No matter what level of professional one attains, occasionally you will find yourself as the kid in the background listening to the men talking. Good on ya, J.D!❤
Great account of the meeting. Very interesting and vivid and I am impressed how Paul is still enthused by the music. His level of fame must be a total pain.
Beautiful story… I went to a gig of Paul’s with Klaus Voormann in our hometown….before the gig Klaus asked me if I wanted to come along backstage….I couldn’t, I would have screeched like in the high days of Beatlemania…
Thank you for sharing your story with us. Can not even imagine? Certainly can’t imagine what his life would be like? That is a crushing amount of fame. Burden
HOLY HELL!!! Congratulations on avoiding head explosion throughout that entire episode. That’s a wonderful story to hear. Very happy for you. So, has this experience affected your playing/recording at all?

Watching this video helps me understand my daughter’s reaction when she met Taylor Swift. She was one of 89 fans to attend the 1989 album preview in Taylor’s parents’ home outside Nashville. She got to spend three minutes one on one with her hero, and dance with her and the other fans to the album and eat cookies Taylor had baked that afternoon. She said every girl (there were just a few guys) just immediately burst into tears upon meeting her, and Taylor hugged and comforted them for half the allotted time. But his mind blown reaction helps me get it, and yeah, some people are just bigger than life no matter how kind and open they try to be. Great story!
@@BobbyGeneric145 and that has what to do with the person she is and how she connects with her fans? If you want to hate women and belittle their accomplishments be my guest. Just say that.
@@BobbyGeneric145 ok what’s your point? I never claimed anything about number one hits. But since you pointed that out I did assume you were saying something negative. I would say she has a pretty successful career wouldn’t you? She started as a teen, did well as a pop country artist then switched to straight up pop music, not something many country performers have done. And she has won lots of Grammys and other awards and sells out stadiums all across the world.
Taylor is a hugely gifted, prolific, impassioned, and very hardworking lyricist, musician and creator of numerous stunning melodies. She has many #1 hits. Just ask Paul about how he views her as a music artist.
Could it be that rather than Paul having unusually high awareness, this guy was unusually aware of Paul? Because it's Paul. I remember an ex Wings member saying that when he first met Paul, it was like seeing a hologram. Because he'd seen photos of his face from every angle, with every expression.
JD is on tour right now with Luther Dickinson. You should go to a show and tell 'em Otis sent ya!
