I looked at buying a Synology NAS as a remote backup and I was dismayed at the poor level of hardware in their systems for the money. Yes they do have a great software package but I think QUTS is nearly as good these days!
I think one of the greatest features of the Ugreen NAS is that you can add memory your from brands like Crucial and you dont have to worry about and don't have to have Synology branded memory. This also goes for hard drives and NVME's
UGreen will be a great disruptor if they don’t restrict 3rd party OS. The hardware price point is already smashing QNap and Synology offerings in the same class.
That's especially true with the Kickstarter early bird prices, but I think even the regular price is good for some of them (their 8 bay clobbers the Synology one for instance). I backed the 8 bay, but I think for a file server I want ECC, so I'm trying to plot out a build for that and I feel like I'll probably cancel it. It's too bad all the NAS chassis kind of suck in different ways.
@@AbyssalSoda Yeah, J know. I ended up canceling my pledge because I decided gaining ECC support and multiple PCIe slots was worth not saving a little money to me. I would like to put in a rack and a proper network at some point, and then I may just get a HL15. For now, I just ordered a Minisforum MS-01, a 96 GB Crucial kit that’s been verified to work in it, and a couple,e WD N700 2 TB SSDs with TBW of 2500. I’ll use this as my Proxmox host with the drives in a RAID Z1, so I’m planning to spin up a Debian VM and move all my Docker containers to there so I won’t need the NAS to act as anything but a file server, as Synology’s Docker / Docker Compose version is years out of date and keeping me from doing what I want. I may spin up an OpnSense VM to serve as my router if I can get a 10G switch and proper access point too. Lots of stuff I can play with. Hopefully the drives in the DS918+ will hold up until I can build or buy a bigger badder NAS like the HL15.
I was quite happy with my Synology DS918+ and wanted to upgrade to a newer and faster modell, but their reluctance to introduce faster LAN speeds and the restrictive memory support drove me over to UGREEN. Looking forward to it.
If UGreen is smart, they will keep improving their software stack and provide stellar support on their NAS lineup if they want to be as successful as Synology or even replace them. They should also avoid the greedy practices of Synology like forcing their users to buy their own Synology branded HDDs, SSDs, RAM, etc. that are much more expensive than 3rd party hardware manufacturers while providing no advantage at all. This is one of the main reasons I backed UGreen NAS'es. I don't like the idea of being forced to what hardware or software to use. Good thing UGreen changed their stance regarding 3rd party OS installs or I wouldn't have backed it. This is also the same reason my main OS now is Linux instead of Windows. If I buy something, I want to have the freedom of what to do with it and not be constrained. 😤
Great comparison. Overall i think stuff like UGREEN Nassync is targeting private, homelabe or tech guys. While QNAP and Synology for more for "One Click" Solution or professional level. Most interesting thing will be. If ugreen will follow up with updated models over the coming years or if its a "one time" attemp. Since i thinkg the UGreen Stuff has a lot potential as a DIY NAS hardware solution. Since the software side will take a lot time and the way go to with TrueNAS or UnRAiD seems a pretty good choice. (yeah i know ugreen..... took a while to get there)
I really like the DSM software on Synology (have a Synology router as well), but they are lagging behind on the hardware so badly. I ended up giving UGreen my money for a 6 bay. Hopefully TrueNAS or Unraid are good enough to make me not go back to Synology again.
The big advantage of QNAP and Synology still is that you are more or less guaranteed to get 5-10 years worth of updates on their operating systems and that their boxes have proven to be very robust up to the point that they're almost indestructable.
Without a doubt, same reason why mini-PCs have blown up, seems it is easy to get an SoC platform supply more than ever now like the N100. A bit of DIY if you go for some sort of Mini-PC NAS setup but plenty of guides out there for either an Unraid or TrueNAS Scale setup, so not as complicated as it used to be for the consumer market. The enterprise market I think will be harder to shift due to the maturity, support and trust of established brands.
Synology really thinks highly of itself. Qnap seems less so, but both of these brands command a premium price for not so premium products. Obviously this is because of their more established ecosystems. But I think this tends to drive away some people (like myself) who know what they want/need but don't really care about top tier brand names. The only thing I regret about buying my new Asustor NAS is that I bought a 2 bay unit instead of the 4 bay. But my 2 drive unit still came with 4 nvme drive slots and 2 2.5gbe interfaces so count me VERY satisfied that I settled for a second tier brand that isn't really that far behind the leaders.
Hey I have a terramaster F2-212 and I what to switch to a terramaster F4-424 I have a 8TB and a 4TB HDD from the F2-212 that I been using for Plex and want to put it in the F4-424 but don't know how to proceed any help would be greatly appreciated?
Just got the qnap ts-264. And I truly believe it is amazing. Funny thing is that I got a version that has sodimms and I potentially can update it to 16Gb… will support 32????
Big Issue. I am very wary of storing anything on Chinese brand. I recently ordered Chinese made Dusun 210 home assistant unit and I find out it non-stop ping to Baidu and other Chinese server non-stop. Now I am trying to isolate from my network completely.
Literally every chip in literally every electronic device you have was probably made there, so this seems pretty silly. Now, if you use the stock OS, I may be more sympathetic, but you ought to just put TrueNAS Scale on it. I think I'm going to cancel my pledge for the 8-bay because I want ECC if I'm going to do ZFS, but we'll see.
Recently cleaned my chinese phone with ADB a bit. It was interesting to see telemetry going to China, but to be honest Qualcom (American company) telemetry also was there :) So better to use home automation systems able to work locally. Otherwise just use guest wifi for chinese devices and isolate it from main wifi (if too lazy to make a VLAN for them).
I have Asustor and it is very good, but based on what I read about the hardware in UGREEN devices... today I ordered ugreen nas... and I am confident in the company's ability to support the equipment with software...
New companies and products don't appear from nothing, they arrive to fill a void on the market, Synology with theirs obsolete hardware were thinking that theirs software could continue with market dominance, guess what, when you don't give what consumers want, someone will, personally, all this products are more than welcome, only benefit consumers.
Synology should be very worried. They seem to be more and more complacent. Slow development cycles, puzzling hardware offerings, & a general disregard for customer requests. Synology customers are certainly looking elsewhere. Ugreen could eat their lunch, especially in the desktop space. I hope they do. Ugreen is behind in software features but if this venture is successful you can bet they'll make a serious effort to gain ground. In the meantime docker containers can certainly help fill any gaps in their offerings. I see marius hosting is already giving tutorials for docker service setup on ugreen devices. If they continue to gain support from the community synology is in trouble.
Even if they were worried QNAP and Synology could use the same tactics and release some new models on Kickstarter at introductory low pricing. It’s like falling out of bed, anyone can do it especially if they already have the infrastructure.
I definitely was looking into NAS servers and UGREEN has won me over whereas I was looking into a QNAP or Synology before the Kickstarter happened for UGREEN
I kept planning to, but holding out for the i5 mobo launch/confirmation, as I feel like that will show the scope of what it should be able to do more. I still have the N100 ver.2 in the studio though. I'll give it another week or so, and then just evaluate it on the entry model. Apologies for the delay bud
2 Years ago you would find 2 or 3 bay 10G NAS from established brands, but that's a thing of the past. Now they start at 800€ ish. Stupidly expensive nowadays.
My Synology journey has been a good one and I'm on my 2nd NAS from them - currently still using a DSM418 Play. They do however come at a premium which I contribute to the better software experience and global support network. The downside is that the hardware is not great at the price point and seems underwhelming compared to the likes of Qnap and the new players. I also don't like how they limit package compatibility when some models are very similar in hardware but lack certain package support like Virtual Machine Manager which I could not natively install, yet works fine when manually installed from the DS420 repository. I would definitely consider Ugreen if they manage to get the platform and software off the ground and I certainly hope that the big boys pay attention. Competition is always good for the consumer and I think it's time that guys like Synology up their value proposition.
Since they reluctantly will allow third party software, Ugreen only lacks ECC memory to check off all my wants. Synology software can't be beat, but the DS423+ hardware I purchased last year is really old and obsolete. Even the cheapest model Ugreen has an N100 and 2.5 ethernet. Those alder lake CPUs are at least still sold, and great performers. If I have a NAS running, may as well put it use to run some containers. I think I'll get one and sell my DS423+.
I guess those known NAS brands need to fix their stuff. especially their bloated OS which slows even their top of the line units down drastically even with maxed out upgrades...
There's also asus. They rolled out one of the first consumer flash NASes, who knows if they're gonna contribute with that, but if they do... Anyhow, if syno is going to rest on its laurels, they'll relive the ibm story pretty soon.
To be fair, I wouldn't call Asustor a smaller/entry player. Been following them for years and although they are a smaller team, gotta give them props for being a solid product. Plus ADM has improved considerably in the last 2-3 years. Add to that their Taiwanese base meaning they are less associated with Chinese security fears (not my own, just generally) and I would comfortably call Asustor the 3rd NAS player, often scrapping with Terramaster
@@nascompares they're def not small/be but their market presence is low and new models appear rarely (or at least noticeable ones). Still wondering if this is going to change.
Although Synology branded memory/accessories is expensive, the goal is simply to make their support more streamline and less costly for them. "Supporting" third-party brands is a great appeal to gain market, but at some point, you end up supporting gazillions of combination which will eat you alive. I'd love for them to lower the price of their own brand but I understand the logic: Sell less due to price, allow people to install third-party RAM modules and such, tell them we can't support you = saving. The more these new companies gain market, the more they'll start to face similar problems. Note that Synology does support 3rd-party HDDs in their compatibility list (You can't expect companies to only buy your brand drives)
For me, the the way UGreen decided to enter the market raises the question of whether or not they will be around providing software support for the next 10 years. So buying UGreen (or other brands where NAS solutions isn't their core business) would be a big leap of faith.
I am hoping the "upstarts" motivate QNAP and, especially, Synology to take another look at their hardware and come out with beefier solutions in the near future. Synology, particularly, using older Xeon and some AMD chips in their RackStations and AMD chips in their desktop NASes. These chips don't support Quick Sync, which is a major necessity when buying a machine that will, or may, run Plex. My home lab/network/data center is Intel-only, and I have been forced to build a new 1U server to host Plex, as I am in the process of replacing my Core i3 based Synology DS3615+ NAS/Plex host with an RS2418RP+ without Quick Sync or an extra slot for a GPU.
The laat 3 years I was looking for an upgrade for HP Microserver - was ready to invest a lot for a 5-8 years to live new solution - the old dogs in the market did not ever meet my preferrnce - fast cpu, 10GLAN, nvme solution - I almost pulled the trigger on asustor topline but now the ugreen provided the hardware I dreamed about - the old dogs could have offered this years ago and ask double or triple price even now - at this moment they still dont offer a solution like ugreen dxp480plus - and with ram uprade, os even windows server running on the HW its an unbeatable mini PC solution fast as hell as I was dreaming of - old dogs -> your train has gone catch it
I agree that uGreen has the potential to compete directly with Synology and QNAP. However, uGreen has yet to prove themselves as a trustworthy computing company. Yes, they make chargers, battery banks, cables, and whatnot, but that certainly isn't the same as a network appliance.
I think the big 2 should be worried about UGreen. UGreen has the potential to be what Drobo could have been if they had the funding and foresight to do with their products. UGreen may never be able to touch them at the business level, but for the entry level NAS user, they can be a real threat. Some users just want a simple to configure, reliable RAID solution. I was happy with Drobo as far a easy to use RAID solution goes. I just wasn't happy with the lack of CPU power and only 1G LAN support they provided.
Different markets Different Target Buyers, yes you get support never used it for any of my Synology Nas,s , After you have mastered how to use your nas, your wallet will do the voting. Me all my nas are now DIY would never pay ridiculous prices for what are mostly under powered off the shelf nas.
Since the C2000 bug I would never touch Synology again. Lost lot of money and data cuz of that. Synology even has another series with these faulty CPUs
Qnap and Synology use old versions of Linux underneath but Ugreen uses a newer version, but the Ugreen software experience is poor, the software has a lot of problems, missing features, who knows if your data is safe, in terms of Acls or reliable in terms of raid and writes. We should mention Asustor also, the hardware and software is now well developed, and Terramaster. Synology hardware is old, out of date and slow but very reliable. Most nas systems are pretty overpriced, IMO. You can't buy a Ugreen unless you are in the US or Germany, so that's useless, and the Kickstarter, well, those aren't orders, they are pledges, people could lose everything. I'd never buy a home Nas without 2.5g networking and it must have NVME also. Ugreen is very expensive without the discount - remembering that they are diskless and those disks will, for two, will be pretty expensive.
I love my QNAP 8 bay TVS-h874x with an i9 processor. Other than the development server, the remote backup NAS and reverse proxy I run my entire business on it.
@@theroboticscodedepot7736 I'm tempted! Synology also need to pull their finger out with still having 1GbE ethernet ports, especially on 5+ bay NAS units, No excuse not to have at least 2.5GbE or at least one 10GbE.
Synology is such poor value and they don’t stand behind their product, but it’s a good product and easy to use if acquisition and installation convenience is #1. The fact that you can buy your drives, cache, and enclosure from Synology, and something with the hardware goes wrong, and you’ve paid twice the price for non-Synology gear, and they won’t stand behind their product, is enough to for me to never buy pre-built again.
How I view it as a disaster Okay. Paid the very modest $5 kickstarter to get to the front of the line They launch to EVERYONE, meaning your deposit was meaningless Okay, whatever BUT, you couldn’t use your deposit. Kickstarter had no record, there was no means of using it that I could find or anyone could point me to So after seemingly losing that deposit, getting kicked out of line and having to go to the back of the line, and software still being very beta, I chose to pass Now, I did get the $5 returned As far as the “40%” savings, I don’t see it The discounted price on the 8 bay simply matches synology’s DS1821+ price, with better hardware and worse software and support. Feels like a wash, pretty much Go up to msrp and they seem overpriced to me
@@paulbritton1436 The 40% was for the first 48 hours. If you missed it, you done missed out. 35% is still nothing to scoff at. To each their own. Hardware is comparable to $2000 machines from Synology/Qnap.
Nice example of a person which never had Syno and never seen their release notes :) Or bot probably depending on: "old apps :), no updates in years :), we support :))))" I personally (without WEEEEE :) glad that Ugreen is trying into NAS market. Maby when they add more features and cure security vulnerabilities (such as not working user access control under SMB) it will be worth to take a look at their products. P.S. And by the way, good looking design app is way easier to make comparing to good working one 🤣

Not recently different. Consumer NAS segments overlap.
@BoraHorzaGobuchul nope they don't
@@waynetaylor2784 pardon me? In which way don't syno DS range devices overlap with Ugreen ones?
No, I don’t think they’re worried...much. 😟
They should be worried if they don't hurry up with a new 8bay consumer NAS, I can't wait forever Synology, Eyes are looking at other brands.
I love my QNAP 8 bay TVS-h874x with an i9 processor. Other than the development server, the remote backup NAS and reverse proxy I run my entire business on it.
@@theroboticscodedepot7736 TVS-h874x with an i9 😍
@@theroboticscodedepot7736 I'm tempted!
Synology also need to pull their finger out with still having 1GbE ethernet ports, especially on 5+ bay NAS units, No excuse not to have at least 2.5GbE or at least one 10GbE.

Hi man. We are migrating over to a new server! Cheers for the heads up man
Good to hear, just great timing on my part then. Glad to see all is well!
I signed up for the UGreen kickstarter. The launch was such a disaster I decided to pass. If you can't even handle that......
how was it a disaster?
Yes how.. I bought fine. You waited and lost the 40%
How I view it as a disaster
Okay. Paid the very modest $5 kickstarter to get to the front of the line
They launch to EVERYONE, meaning your deposit was meaningless
Okay, whatever
BUT, you couldn’t use your deposit. Kickstarter had no record, there was no means of using it that I could find or anyone could point me to
So after seemingly losing that deposit, getting kicked out of line and having to go to the back of the line, and software still being very beta, I chose to pass
Now, I did get the $5 returned
As far as the “40%” savings, I don’t see it
The discounted price on the 8 bay simply matches synology’s DS1821+ price, with better hardware and worse software and support. Feels like a wash, pretty much
Go up to msrp and they seem overpriced to me
Get in touch with them.... they will give you the 40%. Don't lose out its awesome
@@paulbritton1436 The 40% was for the first 48 hours. If you missed it, you done missed out. 35% is still nothing to scoff at. To each their own. Hardware is comparable to $2000 machines from Synology/Qnap.
Synology APPS are OLD looks like 1980's! No update in YEARS! UGREEN WE SUPPORT YOU! NOW K SOME A
Nice example of a person which never had Syno and never seen their release notes :) Or bot probably depending on: "old apps :), no updates in years :), we support :))))"
I personally (without WEEEEE :) glad that Ugreen is trying into NAS market. Maby when they add more features and cure security vulnerabilities (such as not working user access control under SMB) it will be worth to take a look at their products.
P.S. And by the way, good looking design app is way easier to make comparing to good working one 🤣
Your increasingly desperate clickbaity ad's for Ugreen are becoming a joke
@@lu544 What product???? UGreen doesn't have a shipping NAS product yet they have now had NINE seperate videos on this channel ....including a interview FFS .... The more it goes on the more it just looks like he's sold out to Ugreen
