I think it's a good thing the TypeR looks so different and so aggressive. Seriously, my wife will look at a GolfR and say, oh it's a Golf. But when I showed her this civic she said -"wow, it's like a racing car" Come on, if you want a smoking hot hatch, why buy something as boring as the golf? This is what HOT hatches should be like. Just my two cents
WhiteSlift Yea, until you realize you can't see shit out of the car because it totally blinds you, when going trough sweeping corners the A pillar is exactly covering the apex of corners and doesn't allow you to see what you're supposed to see. A pillars need to be as close to you as possible, like in BMW's, so that you're basically able to touch the windshield without leaning forward, and you're not even looking at A pillar when driving. Most FWD cars have the windshield so far forward and such big and long A pillars that they cover too much of your view.
When we were at the Europe press drives of the Type R in Slovakia last week, they said, that produciton Civic is going to have the magic seats, just like a normal Civic. Our press cars didn't have that, because it was a preproduction car (or so we've been told). It also said no.0000 on every single car I drove, so they're probably not lying.
Great car! Only thing that annoys me is the rear spoiler on top of a sort of a spoiler I think it just looks stupid when you have a spoiler that is on the same line almost as the roof
I've been patiently waiting for the release of this car, taking the bus and walking everywhere..... Went to the honda dealer yesterday to finally buy it.... and they don't have any in Trinidad
Bit late, but I'm sure they've got tilt/telescopic steering wheels. People complained the same about the 8g, I read about it after I'd already adjusted mine to suit me. Though I realise not all cars have the option, in many, people just don't realise its there as it's quite tucked away on the FK2.
@@EvoBeard even with a telescopic wheel, I struggled with my setup because I couldn't get it in a position where I could clearly see both my tachometer and my speedo. That said, it is at the end of the day a minor anoyance that is far outweighed by the reliability of the car.
"That interior is shocking! So cheap!" How so? It's got alcantara seats; it's got an aluminium gear knob, it's got racing shift lights - so that's the type r stuff; it's got (some) soft-touch materials, felt-lined glove box, woven headlining, touchscreen infotainment system, leather steering wheel etc so that's the VW Golf style stuff -- it has everything it's supposed to have. :) The interior isn't like a BMW, because it's NOT a Bmw. Besides BMW M135is don't have real leather or suede headlinings or real wood veneer etc anyway.
If you're going to talk about a limited slip dif then at least make sure your facts are right. Limited slip difs will send more power to the inside wheel of a corner to it pulls the car around and so theres not too much power going to the outer wheel for the car to go wide (under steer).
I love the way it looks! It's appears bonkers to drive, so I think it's apt that is bonkers to look at. If you spend that much money on a hot hatch, you'll wanna get noticed, and you'll have to try PRETTY hard to be missed in this one! Think about it... Hot hatches themselves are a bonkers concept, so it's good that this one looks suitably crazy (: I love it! Although to be honest, I'm quite looking forward to the Focus RS...
I think it's stunning I want one but it's pointless where I live to much traffic to put my foot down I don't understand why people think it's ugly I've got a semi just looking at it in the show room last week.
Every time I see one of these on the road in white or I suppose black, i just think it’s a spaceship because of the styling which is what I like the look, but only from that preference, I prefer the subtle sort of sports look of the pre-facelift version, curved back rather than pointy lights, same applies to the standard cars, all these pointy bits look bloody awful.
Good Review, Really like the Honda Cabin and especially the dashboard layout. Never the less they somehow ruined the exterior from what was show on the concept. Something is simply not sexy, neither really powerful looking - My best guess it that it has to do with the Wheels - They sit to deep in the arches and thereby simply do not appear aggressive enough to "carry" all those wild spoilers and creases. And as nearly every tuner fan would know the stance has to be right before anything else - You can have the worst looking rusty car wreck - Put the right wheels on it and there you go, suddenly it has some appeal. The only thing you do not do is to start with the spoilers, creases, splitters while your car sits on small wheel and standard rubber - that is a no go. - Sadly this is how the new R-Type appears in my eyes. Luckily one can change the wheels and there will for sure be version of this Car that counters this issue. Never the less it should be better from the start imo.
1:02 - the car is japanese, it was built with tuning in mind - like the new supra. more power needs more cooling. the tuners will now be able to open up more cooling channels without having to slaughter the bodywork.
This actually is an up from honda after their last desings. I say that but I prefer a suttle design with !ad performance as they did before, and of course all in an affordable price range.
I like so much Mat Watson's videos , he knows the car's technologies and like sportscars Great video , Mat This newType R is my favorite FWD , Vtec turbo engine ,brembo breaks, smooth gearbox , efficient sachs suspension and communicative direction .
Instead of everyone who has reviewed the car saying that there is 1000rpm delay before BOOST kicks in, what about when you are already in higher RPMs? People that buy these type of cars don't drive them like grandma would, so don't sell it to the public as if the actual buyer is one.
It's great but it's also very over engineered for the type (VW Golf GTI like) buyers that just want a top of the range hatchback. I hope there will also come a 200 hp like Types S with the sport red and black interior, but without the massive spoiler and with the normal magic rear seats and the shelf in the boot :p
I have nothing against how VW makes their cars, but it's very true they make the most overrated cars in the entire world. And the new ones are by no meaning as good as the ones vw made in the early 80s ;)
The fk2 is a great hot hatchback but... I don't know. Not a huge fan of the exterior and this never felt like as much of a Honda if you get me. Good car but my favourite type r is probably either the ep3 or ek9.
I actually really like this car but for 29k british pounds = around $45,000 USD (if they even sell it in the US) You could get the new Focus RS, STI or Evo X fully loaded for that price. And those have AWD
not to mention that the RS will have 350hp drift mode, and visibility out of the rear window, if you need that. Obviously Honda messed up with this one.
Tambo74 fuck it cracks me up that over in the UK you get wankers like that driving these cars haha out here in Australia they drive holden commodores haha this car is ugly as fuck, its targeted to the bogans and chavvys of this world who don't have a logical clue in their minds. Hence the reason half of them are still stuck in government housing.
Fastest Front wheel drive car on sale? I don't understand.. Sorry if it's me just being thick! But isn't the Ford Focus Rs500 0-60 5.4?. I know the Civics top speed is just a little higher but that doesn't mean it's faster does it? I suppose it depends on what track. No hate though I love the new looks and specs :)
Do you really not get a false floor or parcel shelf!? *Surely not!?* That seems outrageous to me, as an Fn2 driver :), the flat load bay is quite handy. Anyhow those parts would be what less than 50 pounds from the Honda parts desk, surely. If you asked the salesperson I'm sure they could source them for you. The fold-up mechanism of the seats is also "disabled" on the FN2 too... Though you can disable the pin that holds the seat support bar to the floor, if attacked with suitable force ;)
To be honest I think the turbocharge and especially that turbo lag just kills all the feeling and soul that an atmospheric Type-R has. What were you thinking Honda, seriously? Are these guys and the guys who made the S2000 atmospheric engine the same people? I don't think so. Oh and Matt, V-tec just doesn't kick in anymore bro... :(
so Mat, i know most reviewers only quote specs off a crib sheet rather than attempt them but 5.7 to 62 does not make it the "fastest accelerating fwd currently on sale." are you oblivious to the Cupra 280? with a DSG it equals the same (manufacturer's) time. lazy journalism mate.
It just looks a bit like it was designed like a 9 yr old. If I'm paying 30k for a car I don't want that. On the flipside I think Golf R is a little too conservative for me. If I was gonna buy a car in this class then I'd just wait until the new Focus RS came out and buy that instead. Best looking imo and it's awd.

I think that it would be better of it had oversized bike engine that revs up to 15.000 rpm . It would not have low down torque , but imagine driving 60km/h in 4th , shift into second gear , and than get to 120km/h in seocnd gear .
$48,000 for a quiet, not as fast as advertised, plastic interior toy? This is just as ridiculous as a Chevy Camaro Z28 not having A/C and still being $80,000...wow. An H22 turbo swap Civic on 8 lbs would eat this alive...
Are these coming to America? In America we don't have the R we have the Honda Civic Si, the Si is not fast enough for me... I hope they are coming to America.
I love the styling, most modern hot hatches look to much like the base models. Too safe.
I think it's a good thing the TypeR looks so different and so aggressive.

One of the best type r reviews. Top notch
Carbuyer,I can't live without you.
First.
2ed
3rd.... damn!
Carbuyer your links do not work...NO links!!
anUntouchable Sorry! Fixed it
Please One 4 Me :)
Honda has done an amazing job with the Type R, more cars in this segment need unrestrained styling. Can't wait for the Focus RS too!
I agree this car is shouting Yes I Am a hot hatch, which they should
Ian Townsend also shouting i am a knob to most people
lam neth Whoever purchases a Type R would be proud to have it, doubt they would care about what "most people" think.
Razor Callahan How old are you?
20, why is that relevant?
2:44. Just gotta love that gently rising, flat A-pillar. Really beautiful on all the Civics.
WhiteSlift Yea, until you realize you can't see shit out of the car because it totally blinds you, when going trough sweeping corners the A pillar is exactly covering the apex of corners and doesn't allow you to see what you're supposed to see. derbigpr500 I drive an 8th gen and the visibility is pretty good.
derbigpr500 Each to their own. I prefer the airy cabin. The windscreen finishes over the top of the engine on a Civic.
Daniel Krnáč Those will be pre-prod cars - destined for the crusher, not the road.
Thank you so much carbuyer for listening to your fans and bringing back the single video instead of several ones. Much appreciated!
Wow, this looks better than the FK8. I never knew this car existed.
Yep I prefer this over the fk8.
Great car! Only thing that annoys me is the rear spoiler on top of a sort of a spoiler I think it just looks stupid when you have a spoiler that is on the same line almost as the roof
Finally the Civic Type R!
I love how these guys interact with their audience. Good channel.
I've been patiently waiting for the release of this car, taking the bus and walking everywhere..... Went to the honda dealer yesterday to finally buy it.... and they don't have any in Trinidad
This should be sold with two options, the engine in this and the more vocal, NA, high revving standard VTEC engine
The vents behind the front wheels are to let hot air escape from the engine bay not just for show.
Fell in love with this car when I reviewed it recently for my Channel - Such available performance and a special feeling on each drive.
wow i didn't expect this review so fast but great job carbuyer and amazing car honda (Y)

The steering obstructing the speedo is a big problem on all Civics with a digital speedo. Honda should do something about it.
Bit late, but I'm sure they've got tilt/telescopic steering wheels.

A review on the Jaguar XE is what I want!
Superb description of the engine noise
Mat Watson for Top Gear!!
Stunning car to look at . Wow. And the substance to boot . Wow.
"That interior is shocking! So cheap!" How so? I always like a car to rev high quickly, even turbocharger is the current trend. Nice Type R!

loving the rims!!

Looks very nice!!!
nice heel and toe downshift Mat!
I'm missing why it has arch extensions but the wheels don't fill them. The rear wheels in particular look as though they're an 25 - 35mm too narrow.
I think it's stunning I want one but it's pointless where I live to much traffic to put my foot down I don't understand why people think it's ugly I've got a semi just looking at it in the show room last week.
I kinda like it, better to wait a year or so when it drops in value
sher854 But be careful of cars that've been hooned!
+Carbuyer No, they be under warranty anyway if there are any problems.
Now would be more like that turbo kicked in YO!! Btw that carpet at 3:02... fail
I can't wait until this comes to CANADA and the USA! Wish it came with a dual clutch or regular automatic though.
DoubleD 613 Wtf is wrong with you dave.
hahahaha exactly
DoubleD 613 "Wish it came with a dual clutch or regular automatic though.", never thought I would see that in car culture
DoubleD 613 this is why we can't have nice things...if you want an automatic just get a regular civic.
DoubleD 613 you don't deserve a type r
I'm pretty sure this is awesome piece of engineering after all Mat bought it for himself!!
*my favourite civic* 😍

awesome car test drove one and it's absolutely insane.
Good review Matt

Why can't car makers make functional vents? I'm really tired of this fake crap.
hopefully they do just a SI version too. i can do without that turbo...NA all day
Trying so hard to keep your cool while driving the new Type R, eh Mat? Hahaha! Must be very addictive, that car.
This actually is an up from honda after their last desings. I say that but I prefer a suttle design with !ad performance as they did before, and of course all in an affordable price range.
Looks fantastic, but £30,000 for a Type R? No thanks. Better off with the new Focus RS or VW's GTI's
alexduhlion Or an Audi S1... lovely bit of all-wheel-drive Quattro action!
alexduhlion Or even a BMW M135i
I like so much Mat Watson's videos , he knows the car's technologies and like sportscars

At £30k, if you look around you could get a E63 AMG the 2011 model or just get a E60 M5.
Cant wait for the Japan version of the Type R
I'd like to see a review of the new BMW X1 next. Or at least in the near future :)
Funny to hear a brummie review a car lol. This is coming from a neighbouring yam yam from Wolverhampton lol
Look like a jazz. Love it.
It's great but it's also very over engineered for the type (VW Golf GTI like) buyers that just want a top of the range hatchback.

No competition Honda #1! Can't wait to see how they will modify it on the streets if thy ever make it to the usa.
After market exhaust will fix the engine sound problem
I wish we had this in America😫
Nice review! How much this car pulls in accelerations in comparison with leon cupra 280 and audi s3 ?
Could i ask how is the gas milage on this car like?? And great review by the way, hoping to get this car sometime. :)
The fk2 is a great hot hatchback but... I don't know. Not a huge fan of the exterior and this never felt like as much of a Honda if you get me. Good car but my favourite type r is probably either the ep3 or ek9.
Metal Gear Knob. Nice one
3 words.. I want it!
What's that silver round thing in the centre console that he keeps on moving about?
Where's the auto, flappy paddle?
Haha, nice ending, Mat! :D
Well for sure it is not a car for someone who is looking for a "subtle"look.
On the other hand, old Focus RS (5 pot) sales was not that bad i think.
I actually really like this car but for 29k british pounds = around $45,000 USD (if they even sell it in the US) You could get the new Focus RS, STI or Evo X fully loaded for that price. And those have AWD

Alex Zevallos but they dont have FWD ;-) You think that FWD makes less fun than 4WD? Sorry dude, but you're wrong.
look at the FL5 prices now 😮
*This is a nice engine for my EK*
Great vids man
What about the A class amg? i thought it has more horsepower
Why do manufacturers try to make a FWD more tolerable instead of a simply solution...not make it a FWD?
Do you know when the TypeR is coming to the USA? Some Honda dealers here say 2016... Others say 2017
Not impressed at all.. Golf R - Focus ST - VXR Astra - Civic Type R.
Chavvys will love it though
Tambo74 Not Ford Focus ST, RS!
Tambo74 fuck it cracks me up that over in the UK you get wankers like that driving these cars haha out here in Australia they drive holden commodores haha this car is ugly as fuck, its targeted to the bogans and chavvys of this world who don't have a logical clue in their minds. Hence the reason half of them are still stuck in government housing.
matt pooper And what car do you like?
Honda buys engines they dont make em
Ivan Soto You are joking or trolling right? :)
StandUrGroundNFight google bish
Ivan Soto googled it and no related results returned?
Did you go to page two
so Mat, i know most reviewers only quote specs off a crib sheet rather than attempt them but 5.7 to 62 does not make it the "fastest accelerating fwd currently on sale." are you oblivious to the Cupra 280? with a DSG it equals the same (manufacturer's) time. lazy journalism mate.
Is there a JDM version?
bring on the Mugen version!!!!!
The biggest turn off for me of the Honda Civics is the overly steep raked windscreen.
I wish this car was a rear wheel drive it would be amazing with type r engine
It just looks a bit like it was designed like a 9 yr old. If I'm paying 30k for a car I don't want that. On the flipside I think Golf R is a little too conservative for me. If I was gonna buy a car in this class then I'd just wait until the new Focus RS came out and buy that instead. Best looking imo and it's awd.
I promote extreme styling and appreciate Honda's effort to make the car look as far as possible from the base model but they did mess up the rear end with the spoiler sitting on those horrible looking tail lights
Since Nürburgring banned time attack few days ago, the Civic Type-R will be the fastest FWD for a long time
I think that it would be better of it had oversized bike engine that revs up to 15.000 rpm . It would not have low down torque , but imagine driving 60km/h in 4th , shift into second gear , and than get to 120km/h in seocnd gear .
it has a bit too much style for my taste, but the car as a whole is pretty neat.
I still love these cars well made and nice to drive but they aren't as fun as they use to be
pretty sure those side vents are not for the wheels.. they are to vent out heat from under the hood.
Now boy racers don't need to spend money on spoilers and stuff because Honda has done it already!
Rice rice rice rice rice
Golf R link appears to take you to a 2013 MkVII GTi..... not quite the same!
That's funny because the car has 306bhp and car buyer is nearly at 306,000 subs
Link in description is for Golf GTI not R
